Eggs Benedict with side of fruit
    Shirley D.

Met a few friends (table of 6) for brunch at the newly remodeled Uncle Bills. One friend was able to go down memory lane with lots of childhood memories living nearby. The place looks great restoring the restaurant vs remodeling. I ordered the eggs Benedict which comes with hash browns and a side of fruit. Excellent choice! Everyone was happy with their food. We were able to hear everyone at the table and didn't feel rushed. Alisha was our server and she kept our coffee hot and did an excellent job.

Things are different now but still the same at Uncle Bills. Check in is electronic now so no long lines inside the restaurant. About 15 people were seated outside waiting. Our wait was 30 minutes. Then I noticed the wait had increased to 45 minutes. Once seated there were no less than six empty tables on our side of the restaurant (closest to Kinshighway). Server came to our table almost immediately. The menus look like the old paper ones that were your placement. Now they're a heavy plastic and are removed once you order. I got chicken and waffles. It was tasty. Hubby got the 2x2x2x2. My food was hot; his was cold (probably due to the extra 15 minutes noted on the menu to prepare my chicken) Couple across from us were there when we were seated (with only beverages). We ate and they still hadn't received their meals . The manager came over and comped their meal. And it was the lady's' 31st birthday. Inside looks pretty much the same. A little brighter; more taxidermy and cleaner. LOL

Welcome back to STL, Uncle Bill. I am so glad that Uncle Bill's Pancake House has been brought back to its glory days. It not only has been renovated, it has been rejuvenated. Entering the restaurant is like traveling back into time. It's almost the same old dining room, but with a fresher and cleaner look. To experience UBPH, I drove 40 minutes from the Illinois side of the river and I'd do it again. I meet two friends who live nearby for breakfast on a Wednesday morning around 10 AM. It was packed, but our wait for a table was only 15 minutes. The time passed quickly, so the crowd in the waiting area was constantly fluctuating up and down. Once seated, my friends and I were relieved to see that they did offer adult breakfast beverages. Two of us enjoyed a Bloody Mary ($8) and the other had an Irish Coffee ($8). All three of us were pleased with our choices. I was totally impressed with the flavor and strength of my Bloody Mary. Size was on the small side, but perfect for a diner and price. My breakfast entree was the, Supreme 2x2x2x2. It included; 2 pancakes, 2 strips of bacon, 2 sausage links and 2 eggs. Plus, a side of Hash Browns made it the Supreme version. I had my eggs scrambled and they were nice and fluffy. The size of the bacon strips and sausage links took my breath away. The bacon was thick sliced and sausage links were on the large size. The sausage was grilled with crispy skin and the bacon was done well enough. However, for my personal taste I'd like it to have been left in the oven a little longer for crispiness. The Hash Browns were a great breakfast side dish, the top had a nice crispy touch to them. My pancakes were huge. Honestly, the two pancakes could have been a meal all by themselves. They were extra thick and fluffy and definitely had cornmeal in them. Some folks don't like that, but these were some pretty tasty pancakes to me. I needed a to-go vessel to take some of my food home. Disappointed to see the carry-out containers were not eco-friendly. However, I did take one bacon and one sausage with half the Hash Browns home. I left half the pancakes, I just couldn't eat them all. The portions are huge, so they are totally worth the price. My friend who ordered the same breakfast as I did, also took a lot of it home. She did take her pancakes and said they re-heated up well. Her husband got the Slingshot aka Slinger and cleared his plate except for a few bites. He said the chili topping entree had a good soft kick to it. The staff was friendly and helpful. You could tell they all were learning a new job and struggling with some of the operations. However, they made sure our experience was a good one. It a new establishment, I am confident once they all get fully trained, everything will run super smooth. So if you go soon, cut them some slack.

Have mercy how have I missed this place all these years? So glad to know it is here now cause dang they got it going on! I got there around 10 this morning asking for a table for 12. Was told 30-35 minutes and took a little longer but not bad. I had finally gone back inside to check and saw they had our table almost ready. With 12 people (some of us a bit more high maintenance than others) all ordering all the things, having one server work our table I know is a lot. Alexis slayed though! Seriously she was checking in, getting plates, others helped keep coffee and water cups full. It was awesome. I didn't realize they had been closed for sometime, friends commented it was what they always counted on and then said it seemed refreshed. That's what had happened! This was actually their first Saturday open in a while. It has sort of a Swiss chalet feel with stained glass windows, flower boxes, etc. The group ordered a few sides of biscuits and gravy and an order of apple caramel pancakes -- have mercy they were unbelievably good! I will be back for the biscuits and gravy when I want the real down home thing. A wait person brought food toward us before we had even ordered and the fried chicken someone ordered entranced us. Next thing I knew the girl next to me was asking if she could get a chicken leg as a side. It was brilliant! They said it would be sold with a thigh which I had and seriously it was magical, glorious... incredible. I also had the Tio Bills skillet. A friend said it looked like chilequiles but over hash browns and he was right. The peppers, chorizo, cheese with eggs on top were incredible! Will be back!

I never went to the old Uncle Bill's but I always heard about it's reputation, so we wanted to try it out. I got the Uncle Bill's Skillet. It had hashbrowns, mushrooms, onions, peppers, diced ham, cheddar cheese, two eggs (I got them scrambled), and sausage gravy. It was not as flavorful as I had hoped. The hashbrowns weren't seasoned, and neither was the gravy. For $16, the portion wasn't too bad, but I was hoping to be wowed by the flavors. They did a great job with the remodel, and it was a welcoming space. We may have to give them another try. I know they are still getting up to speed.

It's the "new" Uncle Bill's and it is better with the cleaning, refurbishing. Menu appears much the same with some fine additions and upscales, like gf waffles and pancakes. Had a pancake and it was the best!!! Diner atmosphere only cozier. Service was fast and friendly.

I wasn't impressed at all by the size of the omelette. Definitely not a 3 egg omelette. I make bigger omelettes at home. Surprised by the amount of the price increases. My first visit was pretty good. I got the traditional Eggs Benedict! It will be awhile before I go back.

Songbird makes great use of its space and should be near the top of your STL brunch list. A reasonably-sized (not-overwhelming) menu, great coffee, delicious cocktails, quick, attentive service, and undeniably delicous food. I took off on a redeye this morning (coffee courtesy of Blueprint), and landed on the Farm Sampler: two scrambled eggs, applewood smoked bacon, sourdough toast, sliced avocado and sauteed shiitake mushrooms. Phenomenal flavors and textures. Toast is typically an afterthought for me, but the buttery crunch of the sourdough has to be spotlighted. The Bee's Knees cocktail was also a wonderfully refreshing prelude to the approaching STL summer. The time has come, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say: wake up, reserve, enjoy.

I was very excited to try them but left knowing I would not return. I waited 40 minutes on a weekday morning for a bar seat for one, standing because all the waiting area seats were taken. The hostess/waitress was very nice when she got to me, but you could tell that the amount of customers was simply too much to handle. Now, this was okay - I should have made a reservation, and it's not the staff's fault they were overwhelmed. However, the service once I sat down was patchy, delayed and distracted. I had to remind different servers of my presence, multiple times. I was willing to overlook this if the food had been fantastic, but unfortunately, their most popular item, the combo breakfast sandwich, was so incredibly heavy. The first bite was crispy, oily and fatty deliciousness, but by the third bite it was simply too rich. The sweet overtone of the honey was lovely but did not cut through the grease. By the time I finished half, I understood why several diners had left the other half uneaten. My personal preference is for a fresh, umami yet balanced sandwich that does not make me feel queasy after finishing it. This was not the sandwich for me. There was a long delay after I finished eating for them to bring me the check. My whole meal took around 2.5 hours. I had arrived starving and, I like to think, with an open mind. These are my honest, unfiltered observations. It is wonderful that so many people want to try their food and that their new space is bigger. Their decor, glassware and menu were cute and tasteful. I also love that they grew from a farmers market food stall and that they source their ingredients locally. With their level of popularity, I think they should focus on preserving the quality of their service and food.

Amazing restaurant, with amazing staff…read more I went here with my kids for an early fathers day breakfast. We made a reservation to this place. It said we were ninth in line. We thought we had to wait for a long time, but it actually went quick (like 5 minutes) when we got there. We did not realize this place had an upstairs, until our waiter guided us. This place looks very large on the inside compared to what it looks like on the outside. The restaurant also had an rustic atmosphere. With exposed pipes, rusted decor, and 80's memorabilia on the shelf. We ordered coffee here, and one of them came in a Christmas cup. Even though it was six months away. My wife chuckled on how they served her coffee in a Christmas cup. Mine came in a plain white cup. But I still excessively chuckled on how funny the menu is and the staff are. The staff are very attentive to how your food tastes and make plenty of funny jokes with you. They also are very descriptive on what the specials on pancakes and omelettes are. As well as being very honest. I ordered the Benny's Got Beef Or Belly with Brisket. I know, long name. I watched the weather while my food was being prepared, and occasionally looking at the PBS TV nearby. My wife was drawing with my 11 year old daughter (and writing "secret messages") as their food was being prepped and prepared. When my food finally came out, I immediately took a bite. The brisket was very juicy and tender. And the eggs were delicious on the side. I tried this place several years ago. Was still the same good taste that I remember when I took my wife to this place. Very amazing place. Will come again.

Instead, we took time to get ready and I even ran a few errands before checking in with the host. When I did check in, he let me know there would be another 15-20 minutes before a table was ready. It was a chilly day and sort of drizzly the day we went, so we had to hang out inside to wait for the table which was a little awkward, but we made it work. Once our table was ready, we had a server who brought over water and coffee right away. She even told us about the specials for the day and my friend and I were sold with the poached pear pancakes! After a few minutes, our server came back and we placed our orders and also asked for some refils of our drinks. When the food was delivered to the table, it was hot and fresh and looked amazing. My friend and I shared the pancakes and were so happy to be able to sample both kinds. While my other friend went with a more healthy meal of eggs with bacon and an english muffin. Our server came over to check in on us a few times and made sure we were good. When it was time to pay the bill, we took care of htat quickly and were on our way. Honestly, the wait sucks for this spot, but the food delivers everytime and I recommend visiting for brunch if you are in the area. Just be sure to get on the waitlist or else you will be told a crazy wait time upon arrival.

Whether it is the quaintly appointed guest…read morerooms or the delightful library and parlor, each area of this former residence is unique and meticulously maintained. While it is not likely the norm, the owners, Mark & Leslie, met us at the front door, quite literally inviting us into their establishment. It was simply the most welcoming manner in which to be introduced to this treasure and Leslie quickly engaged us with the history of the home and how she and Mark had recently become the owners. We chose this destination based upon the significance of the Fleur-de-lis to my love, a native New Orleanian. Given St. Louis' rich French heritage, the mansion was originally outfitted with four chimneys that feature the fleur-de-lis design and the pattern is repeated throughout the home. While we enjoyed a quiet morning coffee in the back of the property, a lovely shaded patio area, she noticed how many places the symbol was present. She actually made mention to Mark & Leslie that they could make an activity out of counting/finding all of the fleur-de-lis around the home. What a fun idea! We were fortunate enough to book the Tower Grove Park room, a spacious room fitted with a king-size bed and a two-person jacuzzi tub. There is even a 'fainting couch' for that extra French touch! The bed was amazingly comfortable and the decor and accoutrements were exceptional, right down to the pocket doors and writing desk. But a B&B is set apart by the fare served in the morning, and this is where Mark, a chef by trade, and Leslie, a self-taught baker, knock it out of the park. That morning's menu included a fruit starter, fresh juice, Leslie's home-baked sourdough toast and home-baked English muffins, and Mark's egg and sausage soufflés with country potatoes. The entire breakfast had us completely over the moon! We felt so at home that we wanted to clear our own place - so we did! The rates are competitive and well worth every moment spent here. There is parking behind the property, as well as across from the property, and each guest is allowed a unique security code so as to gain entry while you are enjoying your stay. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed this getaway, and Mark, Leslie, & assistant Sammy made us feel like family from the moment we crossed the threshold. We'll be back - and you should give Fleur-de-Lys a try!
