Took my whole family on a Saturday morning to a great experience. I heard they were still working out the kinks when they first opened, so I waited a bit longer to go and give an honest opinion. I appreciate how they kept a lot of the old ambiance while still cleaning up (a lot) and modernizing the seating. There was a bit of a kerfuffle in seating us, we got sat at two different tables and my kids were given water twice (once with lids, once without). It's clear the hostess had her stuff together, and the rest of the staff are working to get on her level. I also appreciated that we didn't have to ask for drinks with lids for the kids - automatically given. We got two kids pancakes, a full stack pancake, biscuits and gravy, and the Tío Bill skillet (which made me giggle). We had to wait about 15 minutes, and we had a big order. Coffee was worth drinking - nothing worse than weak diner coffee. Honestly, I was very happy with the food. I know the pancakes don't taste like they used to and that holds some people up, but I didn't grow up here, and to me they are better. More toasty/malty flavored. The syrup is also good and has some real maple flavor. The biscuits were fluffy, and they added more herbs to the standard sausage gravy, which my husband liked. My skillet was the real winner. Crispy hash browns, and that cilantro ranch. Don't change that! The total was $80 for everything. With today's economy, that's considered cheap, so I'll take it! Special shout out for having gluten-free pancakes and other offerings. That's always a nice part of the Garcia restaurants. Also loved the syrup dispenser display when you first walk in. I was a little scared to come because of some other reviews I'd heard. But I'm pretty sure now that a lot of it is the new Uncle Bill's clashing with people's nostaliga. I know lots of people miss the old one, but if that business worked, it wouldn't have closed. The new Uncle Bill's is trying to be your local breakfast & lunch diner, with fun decor. Very disappointing experience. The wait to be seated wasn't bad at all, but after ordering, we waited about 40 minutes for our food. Unfortunately, the food was not worth the wait. The pancakes tasted burnt, the eggs were undercooked, and overall the food was poorly seasoned. The restaurant also did not feel clean, which made the experience even worse. I'm especially surprised because I've been to The Golden Hoosier many times and have always had great experiences there. Since they're under the same ownership, I expected a similar level of quality and service. We drove an hour specifically to try Uncle Bill's, so leaving after such a bad experience was extremely disappointing. I had been looking forward to going to breakfast at the renovated uncle Bill's. Unfortunately, I doubt that I will be going back. Our server had zero personality and acted as if everything was a great imposition. I had the two eggs with hash browns, turkey, links, and toast. The hash browns were woefully undercooked, the eggs, over easy, had zero taste, and tasted mostly like water, the turkey sausage also zero taste and overcooked. A minor thing, but no strawberry jam which I told they had run out of, just grape jelly with high fructose sugar. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles and he said while the waffles were tasty, the chicken was burnt and inedible. Good thing he ordered a side of grits which he said were tasty. So glad Uncle Bill's is back! Ordered the 2 eggs which came with crispy hash browns, the fluffiest pancake, and your choice of meats. I ordered the 2 vegan sausage patties but one bite in and you could tell it was real sausage. The server took it back to swap for vegan patties but said the kitchen was unable to differentiate between vegan vs real sausage so they comped my meal instead. The tricky part is the vegan patties should be round but kitchen stocks both sausage links and round sausage patties so mistakes can be easily made. If you're a vegetarian or have dietary restrictions that don't allow you to eat pork, I recommend just forgoing the sausages altogether to avoid this mistake. read more

Things are different now but still the same at Uncle Bills. Check in is electronic now so no long lines inside the restaurant. About 15 people were seated outside waiting. Our wait was 30 minutes. Then I noticed the wait had increased to 45 minutes. Once seated there were no less than six empty tables on our side of the restaurant (closest to Kinshighway). Server came to our table almost immediately. The menus look like the old paper ones that were your placement. Now they're a heavy plastic and are removed once you order. I got chicken and waffles. It was tasty. Hubby got the 2x2x2x2. My food was hot; his was cold (probably due to the extra 15 minutes noted on the menu to prepare my chicken) Couple across from us were there when we were seated (with only beverages). We ate and they still hadn't received their meals . The manager came over and comped their meal. And it was the lady's' 31st birthday. Inside looks pretty much the same. A little brighter; more taxidermy and cleaner. LOL read more

Welcome back to STL, Uncle Bill. I am so glad that Uncle Bill's Pancake House has been brought back to its glory days. It not only has been renovated, it has been rejuvenated. Entering the restaurant is like traveling back into time. It's almost the same old dining room, but with a fresher and cleaner look. To experience UBPH, I drove 40 minutes from the Illinois side of the river and I'd do it again. I meet two friends who live nearby for breakfast on a Wednesday morning around 10 AM. It was packed, but our wait for a table was only 15 minutes. The time passed quickly, so the crowd in the waiting area was constantly fluctuating up and down. Once seated, my friends and I were relieved to see that they did offer adult breakfast beverages. Two of us enjoyed a Bloody Mary ($8) and the other had an Irish Coffee ($8). All three of us were pleased with our choices. I was totally impressed with the flavor and strength of my Bloody Mary. Size was on the small side, but perfect for a diner and price. My breakfast entree was the, Supreme 2x2x2x2. It included; 2 pancakes, 2 strips of bacon, 2 sausage links and 2 eggs. Plus, a side of Hash Browns made it the Supreme version. I had my eggs scrambled and they were nice and fluffy. The size of the bacon strips and sausage links took my breath away. The bacon was thick sliced and sausage links were on the large size. The sausage was grilled with crispy skin and the bacon was done well enough. However, for my personal taste I'd like it to have been left in the oven a little longer for crispiness. The Hash Browns were a great breakfast side dish, the top had a nice crispy touch to them. My pancakes were huge. Honestly, the two pancakes could have been a meal all by themselves. They were extra thick and fluffy and definitely had cornmeal in them. Some folks don't like that, but these were some pretty tasty pancakes to me. I needed a to-go vessel to take some of my food home. Disappointed to see the carry-out containers were not eco-friendly. However, I did take one bacon and one sausage with half the Hash Browns home. I left half the pancakes, I just couldn't eat them all. The portions are huge, so they are totally worth the price. My friend who ordered the same breakfast as I did, also took a lot of it home. She did take her pancakes and said they re-heated up well. Her husband got the Slingshot aka Slinger and cleared his plate except for a few bites. He said the chili topping entree had a good soft kick to it. The staff was friendly and helpful. You could tell they all were learning a new job and struggling with some of the operations. However, they made sure our experience was a good one. It a new establishment, I am confident once they all get fully trained, everything will run super smooth. So if you go soon, cut them some slack. read more

Have mercy how have I missed this place all these years? So glad to know it is here now cause dang they got it going on! I got there around 10 this morning asking for a table for 12. Was told 30-35 minutes and took a little longer but not bad. I had finally gone back inside to check and saw they had our table almost ready. With 12 people (some of us a bit more high maintenance than others) all ordering all the things, having one server work our table I know is a lot. Alexis slayed though! Seriously she was checking in, getting plates, others helped keep coffee and water cups full. It was awesome. I didn't realize they had been closed for sometime, friends commented it was what they always counted on and then said it seemed refreshed. That's what had happened! This was actually their first Saturday open in a while. It has sort of a Swiss chalet feel with stained glass windows, flower boxes, etc. The group ordered a few sides of biscuits and gravy and an order of apple caramel pancakes -- have mercy they were unbelievably good! I will be back for the biscuits and gravy when I want the real down home thing. A wait person brought food toward us before we had even ordered and the fried chicken someone ordered entranced us. Next thing I knew the girl next to me was asking if she could get a chicken leg as a side. It was brilliant! They said it would be sold with a thigh which I had and seriously it was magical, glorious... incredible. I also had the Tio Bills skillet. I never went to the old Uncle Bill's but I always heard about it's reputation, so we wanted to try it out. I got the Uncle Bill's Skillet. It had hashbrowns, mushrooms, onions, peppers, diced ham, cheddar cheese, two eggs (I got them scrambled), and sausage gravy. It was not as flavorful as I had hoped. The hashbrowns weren't seasoned, and neither was the gravy. For $16, the portion wasn't too bad, but I was hoping to be wowed by the flavors. They did a great job with the remodel, and it was a welcoming space. We may have to give them another try. I know they are still getting up to speed. read more

Met a few friends (table of 6) for brunch at the newly remodeled Uncle Bills. One friend was able to go down memory lane with lots of childhood memories living nearby. The place looks great restoring the restaurant vs remodeling. I ordered the eggs Benedict which comes with hash browns and a side of fruit. Excellent choice! Everyone was happy with their food. We are so glad to see Uncle Bill's refurbished and reopened. We had many breakfasts there over the years, so it's nice to return. They did a great job in cleaning and fixing up the restaurant, and it was a pleasure to have breakfast with former coworkers. We have good memories of 3am meals! The menu is pretty much what it was, except prices, of course. But it's still a great deal. The staff was friendly and attentive, made us all feel welcome. Great ambiance, just like the old days! Uncle Bill's is open again. We came here about two weeks after their grand opening. I guess they still don't have their staffing completely up to speed because we had to wait for about 30 minutes and there were several empty tables. Once we were seated, we were quickly attended to and got our food really quick. I ordered one of the breakfast specials and it was really big the bacon was large slices and very crispy just like I ordered. I was able to take half of it home to enjoy the next morning for breakfast as well. The restaurant still kept all of its old charm and decor. The bathroom was very clean and probably the tiniest sink I've ever seen. read more

Having been a patron of Uncle Bill's for several decades and saddened by its closing a couple of years ago, I was anxious to dine there after it was renovated and reopened. Had breakfast on a Saturday morning. The redo is great, spitting image of the old restaurant! Service was friendly and prompt but meal arrived a bit slow given restaurant wasn't full. Food was good, pretty standard for breakfast. A bit expensive. I would return but won't be rushing back as there are other better breakfast spots. Definitely a place to go for the nostalgia of those late night visits to Uncle Bill's. No longer open at night--at least for now! read more

Welcome back Uncle Bills! The ambiance was so there. It was absolutely crazy how much the place kept that original charm yet modernizing the overall experience. Up to date paying options, music (shoutout to DJO) and the service was top notch. Everyone was in a great mood to see us! The food was great but there were two things that could have been better. The meat. The bacon and the sausage I have to say is some of the best I've had in the city. Especially the sausage. Holy cow! Now the areas that need improvement and are critical to the overall breakfast experience are the eggs and the hash browns. I typically ask for an over medium egg to gage the quality of the food (over medium egg is the most difficult to achieve given the small window of perfection). Sadly mine came out waaaaay over hard and couldn't eat it. And now the hash browns. Asked for them to be extra crispy and they came out very soft. Also couldn't eat. Outside of those two small things, which was more than likely an isolated incident, Uncle Bills on Kingshighway is still one of the best breakfast food spots in the city! read more

I had so looked forward to returning to Uncle Bill's. I waited to give them time to work out any new opening bugs. The Good? Ashley, my server was on her game and could work her section smartly. Bacon was also excellent. Felt like the old Uncle Bill's environment. The bad? The price. $25 for pancakes and bacon and a drink. Seemed high compared to competitors. Most disappointing were the pancakes. I ordered double blueberry pancakes. Driest and overcooked pancakes I've had in a very long time. They fell apart as I was eating them. I regretted not going to Chris' Pancake on the Hill where I usually go. The only reason I'm giving it a two star review is simply for the server. She saved the experience. Loved the renovations, the place definitely has that new smell to it, very friendly staff and updated equipment. The only downside was that I went into the restaurant with my mind set on steak and eggs and they were completely out of ribeye steak. Settled for the biscuits and gravy which were good but could have used a little more gravy. I ordered a side of hash brown which would served on a bread and butter plate, a little bit cold and not crispy at all. We visited Uncle Bill's Pancake House twice in the same week -- first on May 4th and then again on May 8th -- and unfortunately both experiences were extremely disappointing. During our first visit, our server was on break when we were seated. The manager took our order, but we never actually met our waitress until she brought the bill at the very end of the meal. Nobody checked on us the entire time. I decided to give the restaurant a second chance on Friday, May 8th, but the service was somehow even worse. Our server, Lexus ("like the car," as she introduced herself), was very inattentive. My drink arrived about five minutes after my food, and I never received my pancake at all. They eventually tried to offer it to me as a to-go item. To their credit, they did remove the drink from the bill, but the overall experience was still unacceptable. What concerns me most is the handling of gluten-free orders. My wife specifically ordered gluten-free because she has issues with gluten, and we repeatedly emphasized that requirement. The next day, she was extremely sore and believes she may have been served a regular Eggs Benedict instead. When I checked the receipt afterward, it didn't indicate gluten-free anywhere on the order. Because of this, I will not be returning to this Uncle Bill's location. I would also strongly advise anyone with celiac disease or serious gluten sensitivities to avoid eating here. read more

My lovely wife and I went to UBs their 3rd day of operation and had a really nice time. I was hungover and had their cheeseburger at 1030 am. It was a very tasty, solid diner burger. Very hefty. The fries were crinkle cut, had a great fry on them and were piping hot. 10/10. My wife had the 4x4 that was so-so. The hashbrowns were meh, kind of mushy when one would expect crispy. Sausage and bacon were phenomenal! It pains me to say, but we thought the pancakes were not that great. They were incredibly doughy in the middle. Work on that, it's in the name. Otherwise, service was friendly and I understand they're working out the kinks. I'd rec'd some better signage for putting your name in-it was kind of a cluster. read more

I ordered the schnitzel sandwich for lunch. Get Swiss cheese on the sandwich. They said it comes with Swiss cheese. Didn't get a pickle. Server said that she would bring a pickle but never did. I asked for crispy french fries. They were not crispy. They were soggy. As per a side of mayonnaise and for the mustard to be put on the side. They didn't do that either. Since I waited so long to eat, they were not very accommodating. I ate the sandwich because I was hungry. Manager never came over until I was done manager said that he would've made me a new sandwich. If I wouldn't have eaten what I ate then he had the nerve to offer me a 15% discount. We agreed to a 50% discount since I ate most of the sandwich but not the french fries and no pickle and no cheese on my sandwich. I won't be back. I realize that they just opened up and a lot of people are waiting to try it, but it is not like it was. Don't waste your time if you go for lunch. I didn't try the breakfast. Well I was excited to go back and try the renewed Uncle Bill's and see if it's as good as it was way back when or what. Me and my husband went on a Friday miring hoping it wouldn't be to busy, I was wrong. It was packed. The way they have the front entrance set up youbdont know if you just wait in line for your turn, or have to put your name on a waiting list. We finally got up front and found out you have to put your name on a waiting list and give yoyr cell phone number so they can text you when your table is ready. So keep your phone handy or you will miss your table. I felt bad for the elderly because some of them didn't have a cell phone and thought there home phone number would work, I wonder if they finally got a table or not. After we were seated we notice a lot of empty tables with a hug line waiting to be seated, what's the deal?? Our waitress had a personality of paint drying and waxing a big hurry to get out order. I said we need a minute it's our first time back since you reopened and need to check out the menu and could take our drink order. Be ready if you want orange juice haveca credit card ready to pay for it because it cost me $10. We finally put in our order and it didn't take long for outlook food to come out. They did get my order correct for my bacon to be wimpy, after that the rest of the food is another story. I ordered thec2x2x2x2 and my eggs weren't even warm and therapeutic ofveggs was the amout from 1 egg, a small egg, the pancakes was definitely a disappointment they've received grainy and it kept sticking in my trought and I couldntveatbtgem at all. Use to go before the y closed. Tried it out today. Got the country fried steak meal with a pancake. Me and my partner shared it and the food was flavorless. Everything was cold but the country friend steak. The syrup didn't even have much flavor to it. Service was also awful. The vibe in there was just weird. Been a customer for 56 years. The good: sausage and bacon are top notch. The bad: service was abysmal. For 1st time in 56 years had cold pancakes & has browns. Told the HS student at checkout & he said "sorry, still working out the kinks". Not a really good response. I'm not in the habit of spending $87 so the business can work out its problems. As a business owner ya'll need to have a better response. I'm grateful you are helping the community but not with inferior quality. read more
