We stopped in at Coyote Grill while in Laguna looking for a breakfast spot with a view of the ocean. They have a covered patio that gave us that view and ambience we were looking for on a casual weekday morning. They have valet parking for $4 and I believe it's cash only. It made parking very convenient. The service was friendly and prompt. I always test out a new spot by trying their eggs benedict. I used to come here a lot (like 10-15 years ago), and loved it, plus seriously missed the calamari tacos! We ordered the plainer guac which is very plain avocado mash so I'd recommend the spicier one. It was a pretty small bowl of guac too but we really didn't need more. It was tasty. The tacos would've been really good, but the calamari breading was way, way too salty! Maybe it was an off day for the calamari seasoning. The other toppings were delicious. The burritos were also just ok, and the red sauce on top wasn't the best. Things we love about coyote grill: It overlooks the ocean, the service is wonderful and attentive, you can get a fun drink in a gorgeous setting, and it is surprisingly very quick to get food. Parking is not ideal so make sure to plan ahead on busy days or valet it for $4. read more

I'm a huge breakfast burrito lover so the egg burrito was calling my name...kind of. I changed the ranchero sauce to salsa verde and the black beans to refried pinto beans. It satisfied my craving but I can't say it was some of the best I've had. The flavors didn't meld together as well but I appreciated that it came with a side of sour cream and guac. I also tried the aguachile as an appetizer and this was a delicious way to start the meal. I love very acidic, tangy flavors and this was heavy on the lime and high on the heat so it was a great combo. There's a lot of workers here so it's easy to get their attention and they also check in on you. I highly recommend dining in the indoor patio-like area since there are tables overlooking the ocean and ceiling decorated with colorful flags and luscious plants. read more

We made a reservation for their Baja Style Lobster which only comes around once a year. We ordered a lobster with the trimmings; it was cooked perfectly and the extras (beans, rice, tortillas, butter, cilantro, onions) were fresh. The restaurant is small and in desperate need of updating; especially their back area! The service was excellent; our server was courteous, helpful and quick. We started with a margarita and an order of guacamole and chips. All in all, the food was good! The shocker was the price of the lobster!!! $110 for a small spiny lobster is CRAZY expensive; we can say we tried it but we wouldn't do it again! read more

Well im so glad i was exhausted and hungry after work, i just stumbled upon possibly my new favorite happy hour! I ordered the street taco trio carnitas and fish. The chips and pico are really good! Great spot for a casual date. Valet is $4 and the public lot a few steps south of the restaurant is free. Bring your squad... There's a wildly dangerous menu of very delicious margaritas featuring pitchers... Definitely coming back. read more

Ate here a year ago was excellent. Ate here this week. Was absolutely night and day. We were so looking forward to a great Mexican dinner Taco presentation...we were embarrassed for the owners!!! Tacos were extremely Dry...ugh!!!!Who in their right mind would let food go out of the kitchen like what we were served.?!?! Smallest taco portion served that we had ever experienced. Enchiladas...marginal. This place needs a wake up call. We'll never ever go back to Coyote Grill! read more

Great standard Mexican restaurant in the area. Very conveniently located with a fantastic view of the ocean from the patio. It has a small facade and is relatively unassuming looking, but the food was good. I got the chicken quesadilla and my friends both got the street tacos. Coyote Grill is a great place to enjoy brunch with a small to medium group size of friends! The selling point is definitely the patio view that overlooks the ocean on a sunny day. The decor really sets the tone of the food. I enjoyed the oyster shot, calamari, guacamole the most! I'd come back for the calamari alone. It had a great chew and texture to it that I still think about. I thought the oyster wasn't the most fresh but I came out ok and still enjoyed it. The mushroom omelette left me a little bummed. I didn't think it was anything special nor did it have a ton of taste. It's just an egg scramble with mushrooms. Even the salsa couldn't help it. This review is specifically for my breakfast this morning but I have a good friend who lives nearby and eats here somewhat regularly. He and his wife absolutely love Coyote Grill as do I. I only realized this morning that they also serve breakfast in addition to lunch and dinner. I selected the breakfast burrito with bacon. I asked if they could top it with Salsa Verde instead of the Ranchero. They were happy to oblige me. It came out piping hot and delicious. The burrito was quite large and came with sides of sour cream and outstanding guacamole. My server Katy was wonderful. She checked back several times to see if there was anything else that I needed. I will be back in the next few days to try some other breakfast options and also likely for dinner too. read more

I went to this place on the weekend, so probably a bit more busy than a weekday, a little noisier probably than a weekday, but that didn't matter, the food there was so damned delicious. I got the beef tacos with avocado added, and the appetizer of guacamole and chips. I highly recommend this place between the friendly wait staff, the cleanliness and the portions of food! read more

Good: The margarita was really good! Bad: I first ordered the pollo borracho and it was horrid--absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Don't order it! I let our waitress know, and to her credit, she offered to replace the plate. We switched to steak fajitas hoping for something better, but oh boy, I was wrong. The steak was chewy and still flavorless. I was so disappointed that I didn't even bother complaining again--we just left the fajita plate untouched, paid, and walked out. Bottom line: Go for the drinks, not the food. read more

This place was the worst restaurant I have ever been to. We ordered the pollo boracho and it tasted like old stale chicken that was preboiled. The waitress then told us that the fajita were good and they ended up having no flavor and the meat was extremely tuff and chewy not edible at all. At the end they brought the check and they would not refund the food I didn't want to make a sence or anything of the sort so I said ok paid and left. I have never had such horrible service and food in my life. 70 + dollar down the drain I could have eaten better at a regular chain restaurant. I would never recommend this place to my worse enemy. read more

Came here after a long beach day and was definitely not disappointed! Despite it being a sunday afternoon we were seated quickly and the servers were very attentive and friendly as well. We got to sit on the patio and the view of the ocean was amazing! I ordered the mimosa drink and it was very decently sized for the price and not too sweet either definitely the perfect refreshing drink after a beach day. We ordered the chicken burrito and enchilada and both were very good and filling as well. Would definitely recommend this spot after a morning at the beach! read more

Loved the environment and vibe. Food was lacking. The calamari tacos were salty as were the street corn and tortillas thick and bit chewy. The flan was not authentic- gelatinous and tasted more like milk tea. Great atmosphere. I'll come back for the margaritas - great service and view. read more

This place is great for great Mexican food in a very causal setting complete with ocean views! They have so many options and you can eat as healthy or not so healthy as you want. Located in south Laguna, Coyote Grill is all about the quaint Baja-esque atmosphere and locals type feel. Their food is more tame than I prefer and leans more tex-mex; their salsa needs salt and seasoning, their food has no kick, and you'll get plenty of melty yellow cheese. Nevertheless, I like it here! They make excellent fresh margaritas (pomegranate being my favorite, their serrano margarita is also delicious but insanely spicy) and their back open air patio has a straight view of the ocean. A couple food items that stand out are their zucchini enchiladas and their crispy tacos. They don't use pre-made taco shells here - they are fresh made to order which yields the tastiest crispy taco! As for some of their top sellers, it's their calamari and coconut shrimp. Pro tip: After your meal take a walk a few steps away down to Table Rock Beach. read more

One of our favorite restaurants in Laguna! Wait is never too long even when it's super busy, valet is inexpensive and makes it super easy. The patio is the best with amazing view and the service is always top notch. I always order the shrimp tacos and they are definitely some of the best ones I've ever had. We love the salsa and ordering calamari. My fiancé likes the chicken burrito and honestly everything that they make is so delicious. I wish we lived closer because their happy hour is amazing as well, and can't forget to mention their house margarita is delicious and strong. read more

Cute little spot on the beach. Not authentic Mexican food if you're looking for that you won't find it here. No homemade tortillas. No real beans. Valet Guys at valet were great. Bar service Service at the bar was great while waiting for our friends to join us. Not only was the service great the drinks taste wonderful. Table service The food was great. It was our first time there but will definitely go back. Problem Our server had a major attitude because four of us at the table were talking and In no rush to order. Later after ordering, we asked to order something to go. We were advised it would take a while because of the number of orders in front of us. After we placed the order we told the server 3 minutes later to cancel it. Her attitude got worse. We still tipped 20 percent. read more

History

Established in 1989.

Coyote Grill was a modest little shack opened by Kim Bryant. He worked tireless hours in the kitchen for years cooking food from the place that he loved visiting, Baja Mexico. After many renovations and building a great loyal staff, it is now known for its tranquil views, tasty food, and satisfying margaritas & bloody marys. Coyote is now kept running by his daughter who works in all areas of the restaurant. We have been featured in Rachel Ray's "$40 a Day" in 2003, The Travel Channel's "Snacks on a Beach" in 2013, in Laguna Beach Magazine for "The Best Margarita" & "The Best Burrito", in the OC Register for our breakfast menu and "Best Bloody Mary" and OC Weekly for "The Best Fish Taco".

Hello Katy! Generally for us it would be the first or second Wednesday in October. Once we hear from our fisherman, we'll have a better idea. FYI, once it does become available you could call us in advance and reserve them!

Most breakfast burritos are a bit skimp on the eggs but not this one -- you get what you pay for, and more. The flavors are outrageous and trust me, you'll want two salsas on the side. For $14 and the amount of food and locations of this place, the Pantry is a no brainer when you're in Laguna.

You order at the counter and there's self seating inside and out on the patio. You can partially see the ocean from some of the patio spots which is nice. There's lots of breakfast options and I like that you can order one or more of the breakfast sides. So you can get a little bit of everything. I had the almond French toast and my husband had the breakfast sandwich. We both shared some bacon, eggs, and breakfast potatoes. Their lattes are pretty tasty, and I would say I'm picky when it comes to iced lattes. They offer a few different special flavors. This is a great little cafe spot that I would be happy to come back to.

It's Laguna so parking can be difficult but it's possible to find metered parking on the nearby cross streets if you don't mind walking a little. We opted to use their valet parking but it's $6 per hour. The restaurant is surrounded by cute shops and there's an area where they have live music on certain nights. There are a decent amount of tables outside with umbrellas for shade. If you come for happy hour on a weekday, it's only available in the upper area by the bar. We came on a Tuesday for happy hour (3- 6pm), so cocktails were $2 off and starters were half priced. They don't have that many cocktails to choose from, so I just got their red Seasonal Sangria ($16). It didn't come in a wine glass which was a little odd but it was fine. We shared their Shrimp Ceviche ($23) and Bruschetta ($19). The ceviche was okay but the bruschetta was excellent. They also had taco specials (I assume because it was Tuesday) so they were $4- 5 à la carte. I tried the Mahi Mahi and Shrimp tacos and surprisingly really liked them. The Mahi Mahi tasted fresh and so did the corn tortillas. I would definitely come back for Taco Tuesday and anytime I'm looking to dine with an ocean view.

I ordered the scallop and shrimp pasta, and on my very first bite of the scallop, it had a strong ammonia taste--a common sign that seafood has gone bad. After that, I completely lost my appetite and couldn't eat the rest of my meal. My daughter ordered the cioppino, and after checking the seafood in her dish, we noticed the scallop was also very rubbery and didn't seem fresh either. Fresh seafood is something restaurants should never compromise on. Based on this experience, I can't recommend eating here and would suggest trying another restaurant instead.

The sides were just as memorable--we ordered two mac & cheeses (so good), a baked potato, honey-glazed carrots (a standout), and mushrooms. Everything was delicious and perfect for sharing. We immediately called the restaurant and were told that a manager would contact us the following day to resolve the issue. We never received that call, so my husband had to follow up himself. Even after explaining that the charge was clearly not ours, we were told we would have to wait while they determined whose bill it actually belonged to. The restaurant made the mistake, yet instead of reversing the incorrect charge immediately, they expected us to wait while they sorted out their own billing error. As a result, we had to put our credit card on hold and spend a large part of our afternoon on the phone trying to resolve an issue that should never have been our responsibility. It's unfortunate because our anniversary dinner was otherwise a great experience. However, the lack of urgency and poor customer service in handling such a significant billing error overshadowed the evening. Because of how this situation was handled, we will not be returning.
