A Comfort Food Classic That Could Use a Fresh Look After spending the day at Oktoberfest, the last thing we wanted to do was cook dinner, so we decided to stop at Cracker Barrel. We hadn't been in quite a while, and we figured, why not? If it's been a while since you've visited, you may notice that the menu has changed. Cracker Barrel has been putting more emphasis on what I'd describe as elevated comfort food, and honestly, we were curious to see how it stacked up. We both thought the fried chicken dinner sounded good. It comes with four pieces of chicken, three sides, and biscuits or cornbread. Since that's a lot of food, we decided to share one dinner. We went with the fried chicken, two orders of coleslaw, and split the fried okra. Of course, we had to get the biscuits with strawberry jelly! The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, but it did take a little while for our food to come out. Once it arrived, though, the wait was worth it. The chicken was hot, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and had good flavor. It did have a slightly salty taste, but nothing that ruined the meal. The coleslaw was fresh, crunchy, and flavorful, and the fried okra was good as well. And those biscuits with strawberry jelly? Always a nice way to round out a Cracker Barrel meal. I unfortunately don't remember our waitress's name, but she was very friendly and doing her best to stay on top of things, even though she was busy. Good service always deserves a shout-out. Now, here's where I think Cracker Barrel has an opportunity. I know the company tried to change its image and received quite a bit of backlash, eventually backing away from some of those changes. But honestly, I think the restaurant still needs a refresh. The décor feels dark and dated, and I think a brighter, more modern look could do wonders. The food is actually pretty good, and I think the atmosphere should reflect that. Right now, the décor can give off the impression that Cracker Barrel is primarily an "old person's restaurant," and I think that could deter younger diners from giving it a try. Change doesn't have to mean losing what made Cracker Barrel popular. Keep the comfort food, keep the hospitality, keep the biscuits and fried chicken -- but maybe give the restaurant itself a little more energy. Wake up, America. Sometimes change is a good thing. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and were reminded why Cracker Barrel has been around for so long. The food delivered, the service was friendly, and sharing the fried chicken dinner gave us plenty to eat without going overboard. Stopped here for dinner although we swore we were never coming back but we had a gift card. We were seated and greeted by our server . It was rather warm in there so you could tell she was hot. Our food took awhile which is why we didn't want to come here again. Food takes forever to come out. We shared the southern fried chicken dinner as it came with 4 pieces of chicken and 3 sides. It was plenty of food and enough for both of us. We also had biscuits. The chicken came out hot and crispy. The slaw wasn't as good as I remember and we had fried ocra. Overall the food was good and it came out faster this time although was still slower then it should have been. Restaurant was clean, just a little warm. The only thing that I feel needs to be re-done is the bathrooms. The ladies room is still looking very dated and smells musty. It need an overhaul. read more

I ordered what I usually get, the pot roast. They have ruined it. It used to be tender but now it comes in an oval bowl and is now chunks of tough beef with gravy that tastes like it's out of a jar. The carrots, which have always been a favorite, were not glazed. They just tasted like boiled carrots with no flavor. The corn muffins are not the same. Our broccoli was dry and portions look smaller. So sad as CB has always been our go to place. They have been cheapening the food quality over the last year and prices have gone up. We have noticed this occurring in different CB's, so it isn't a bad day at one restaurant. Too much of a gamble to keep going back hoping it will be better next time. It's nice that you can travel across the country and stop at a Cracker Barrel for the night. The problem leads to someone that takes up residence. It's sad if someone is down on their luck. There is a camper at this one that has been there quite a while. Maybe a month or more. Gas cans laying around and who knows what else. It's not a good look for Cracker Barrel. read more

Stopped in on our way between Cincy for a rowing meet and home. For simple food and a place that will typically meet your expectations, CB is usually a good stop. This one was at best fair. Our "exuberant" server almost immediately went into some spiel about paying bills and the like...easily seen as a prompt to tip well. Normally I do, but it still has to be earned. The service was slow, slow, slow. Took a long time for her to make it to our table, get our drinks, for the food to come out...to a point of just shy of being ridiculous. The food - barely met even CB's modest standards. I tipped the $8 and change 20%...had the service been better it she'd have made an easy $20. I decided to be adventurous and order non-breakfast items. I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken meal with loaded hasbrown casserole and green beans. The only thing I really enjoyed was the loaded hashbrown casserole. The chicken was crunch with absolutely no flavor. The green beans had no flavor. I never got my drink refilled by our waitress. My wife was missing green peppers and tomatoes on her Steak and Eggs casserole. They also forgot to send out her biscuits. Our waitress was polite, but she did not pay much attention to us. Food was decent but not great. Service could have been better. Ambiance is typical of any Cracker Barrel with too much junk to navigate to get to the dining area. As somebody who works at a local Cracker Barrel this is unacceptable! Bathroom: There was tissue sitting right on the counter so why is it not tissue in the stalls? We were sat for 20 mins before getting our drinks, napkins, silverware (not to mention there was a fruit fly in my drink‍) and bread, We didn't get silverware when we got sat. (Had to ask another sever) The Chicken n Dumplings was COLD. How is it cold and it's a dip meal? Server: She didn't even introduce herself when coming to the table. She seemed nice, (didn't get her name because she didn't have a name tag). I asked if she was new and she was not. So you would think she knew the procedure by now! But no lol. after dropping off our food.. I saw her come check on the table next to us but not us. Very bad customer service on her part. The 3 pancakes were cooked perfectly, tasted delicious, you get little bottles of warm syrup for the pancakes. The eggs were cooked perfect over medium. On to the issue, the sausage was less than look warm and tough. Not good at all. On to the Best thing today was our waitress Shelia. Funny that it was her first day. Cracker barrel is one of our favorite roadside stops when we get hungry. I love their shop and almost always end up purchasing something. We went here for breakfast and I got the grandma pancake sampler, Ben got French toast, and Erica got the pancake breakfast. Everything was cooked to perfection. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She even came by to apologize for the good talking awhile. Boyfriend and I went with another couple for dinner on Saturday, early evening. Our waitress, Brittney was great but she was overwhelmed with too many tables she was servicing on a busy evening. She was trying to keep up. So, when it came time to place our order, I became upset. I wanted the Seasonal Costal Sampler. Only available on Friday. Then I was interested in the Sunday Homestyle Chicken. I asked if it was only available on Sunday's. She said it is available every day. I asked for dark meat. She said it is only boneless chicken breast. Last option was Turkey & Dressing. Only available on Thursdays. So, I ordered a side of Okra and a side of Hashbrown Casserole. The Okra was good but the casserole was dried out. Needless to say, we stopped at a fast food joint for something to eat on our way home. Although Cracker Barrel had very few waitresses/hostess working, the two girls that were there somehow were able to make everyone happy. The two girls did everything from hostessing to waitressing to bussing, yet we never needed anything as we ate our delicious meals. The pancakes were the best we've ever had. All the food was delicious. We were very impressed with the service and the food. Of course we always enjoy Cracker Barrel, but the Grove City store especially did an incredible job. It has been a long time since I been to a Cracker Barrel. I had the Chicken Fried Chicken with Sawmill Gravy smothered over Mashed Potatoes, yummy Baby Carrots and great steamed broccoli with the best Buttermilk Biscuits; and washed it down with Coca-Cola Zero. My friend who has never been to a Cracker Barrel before enjoyed Chicken and Dumplings with yummy Mac and Cheese and Steamed Broccoli with Cornbread. She could not finish her meal. The Cornbread was not crumbly, and very easy to slice to put butter on it. My friend almost bought out the General Store. There's nothing like the restaurant whose parking lot is next to your hotel parking lot in terms of convenience. I vaguely remember being to a cracker barrel once before, but don't remember any details. My husband has never been either. He ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and mac n' cheese, all of which were solid. I ordered the BBQ glazed chicken tenders (the bacon bits on the top? Yum!) with carrots and baked apple. I suppose it's not surprising that the carrots weren't good, I'd just hoped for something buttery and delicious but you can't do much with shoddy baby carrots. The apple was fine, doused in a bit too much sugar and not flavorful throughout, but I could at least eat those. Oh and the biscuit looks really sad, but it tasted wonderful. Well, I know that the food industry is desperately in need of help. But when you don't tend to your tables or even clean them but the customers clearly can see the staff in the kitchen. There was 3 other tables seated after my party. 2 of those tables were waited on before us. And a waitress finally came out. Then we honestly responded to her asking us how we were, she for an attitude! Excuse me?! No, the problem is with the staff and apparent lack of management. We will never come back here zour friends who were with us will not be back and I will be informing everyone at the Ohio Renaissance Festival about the lack of everything here. My family and I came around 3:30pm to have an early dinner. We order our drinks, appetizer, and our food. To start off the place wasn't busy at all and the atmosphere was quiet. The service was slow and no wait time. As we waited for our food our waitress never re filled anyone drinks the whole time. Our pancakes and pancake tacos had no syrup. Literally going to eat our meal with no sauce . Our waitress never care or even ask if there was anything we needed. It seems she kept wanting to walk past our table, not even acknowledging us. How can you enjoy your food when you have no syrup and then no drinks. After everyone is haft way through their food. A different waitress brings out our appetizer. I told the lady to take it back it's too late. Y'all should bring out big pitchers of water at the tables to help out instead of having to wait. Me and some of my other family members didn't eat their food. The waitress finally comes by we ask for our checks and to go containers. As we walk to the register the lady ask how our food/ experience was. I told her everything and she apologized. As my husband puts his card to pay the bill. The lady ask do you want me to get the manager? I looked at her and said it's too late we just payed our bill. Maybe you should have ask before we payed.
