We were driving up from the south all day long on Thanksgiving and we needed to find a place close to where we were staying and we decided here. Luckily they still had turkey dinners available. Actually a 3.5, hubby had lunch there yesterday. Honey it's cold outside, so hubby started off with a bowl of chili. And ordered their homemade meatloaf. He said it was hearty, and good. I only started to go to Cracker Barrel restaurants a few years ago but found I like them. They are often close to the hotels I stay in, provide dependable comfort food, and usually have good service. The Cracker Barrel in Newport still has the old decor, which I sort of like. Only a short walk from my motel and I didn't have to wait for a seat. Big thanks to Cracker Barrel because they support the RVers by tolerating overnight parking in their parking lots. There's no obligation to buy anything but sure, if I'm spending the night and the restaurant is open then I will. I arrived at close to 9pm so I parked in the back and locked up for the night. This morning, a basic eggs and bacon and sausage breakfast with coffee coffee coffee. Biscuits looked great but I'm back on my no carbs so I skipped it. I was turned they were allowed to leave the kitchen. I was even more stunned that the waitress had the absolute nerve to serve them. Incredible. And not edible. Ok Cracker Barrel. I visited years ago and the service has gone downhill. Still amazing food but iffy service. Upon arriving, the hostess kindly greeted us and told us about the new Build-Your-Own Homestyle Breakfast. After 10 minutes, our server came and took our food and drink order and I ordered the Homestyle Breakfast. When the food came after 30 minutes, I was given the Momma's Pancake Breakfast instead of the Homestyle Breakfast I ordered, which is almost the same thing just without the Biscuits & Gravy. I would have asked to fix it but our server didn't come by for another 10 minutes. I understand that servers can get overwhelmed but the restaurant was not crowded/busy at this point. I was part of a bus tour group, and we stopped here for dinner. I am guessing the tour leaders and Cracker Barrel have a procedure that they use to seat a large group such as ours, and it worked well. One ding to the person that seated us who basically flopped down the menus on the table and left without a greeting The server was quick to come to our table, greet us, and take our orders. The food arrived at the table with a surprisingly short wait time. I ordered the Maple Bacon grilled chicken, found on the Home Cooked Classics portion of the menu. The two portions of chicken were cooked correctly, and the slices of bacon that topped them were delicious. After the meal I went through the store (a required action when visiting a Cracker Barrel) in search of a baseball cap. (Rain was in the forecast and I left mine at home.) After being disappointed at seeing some with price tags as high as $24.99. I spotted one style I liked best near the register for $14.99. Very pleasant dining and shopping experience. read more

It's a bit overpriced for simple eggs and hash browns and took a long time to get our food. Kept it simple just so we could eat and run but set us back a bit. Disappointment. "Same ol' same ol'" (albeit consistent) is what you find in most Cracker Barrel stores...except in this case. We've eaten here many times over the past few years in the midst of our travels. It's convenient, close to I-40, and we have generally found this Cracker Barrel to be consistent with service, politeness, efficiency, and food quality. On this particular (July 5, 2015) visit, most of the aforementioned was in order. We were greeted warmly, quickly seated, politely asked about our order for drinks and entrees. The food was delivered very quickly....and therein lies the fault. The plating of 2 out of 3 of our entrees was awful. Sloppy, messy plates, and in one instance a small pile of rice hidden under my grandson's fries. Huh? (Check out the photos I posted with this review.) Upon leaving I told the cashier of our disappointment and he apologized profusely. "We should have sent it back," said he. NO, thought I. I don't come into restaurants to play ping pong with food. (Besides which, I might not have time on a given trip to wait.) These things were missed or simply ignored by the chef, the expediter, and the wait staff. Unacceptable! read more

This Cracker Barrel holds special place in mind, first one ever been to in 2008 when husband & I were on Honeymoon. We spent five days across street at hotel. Came back for quick lunch. Always good service and food. We like Newport & Cosby area. Daughter has cabin in Sevierville but do not care for it too touristy. Just went in for desert at 3:15pm. It took over 30 min to bring out the peach cobbler and brownie. The cobbler was decent. The brownie made both me and my husband wrinkle our faces subconsciously. I like to eat at Cracker Barrel when on the road because it is almost always solidly good. This restaurant was by far the absolutely worst one I've ever been to. The service was bad with a long ticket time. My husband got the country fried steak which was barely edible. Both of us had cold food. My cup of soup arrived 1/2 full and cold. As a Cracker Barrel employee our Christmas gift this year was being taxed $20 on my $100 Cracker Barrel gift certificate and hours cut. I get a charge out of Cracker Barrel advertising that their roast beef is slow cooked for 18 hours. I happen to know that it comes in all cooked and they slice it up. They don't serve enough of a portion. Their hash browns now are purchased dehydrated. They did away with blueberry muffins. read more

The Cracker Barrel in Newport used to be a consistent place to eat. A place where you basically knew the food would be good. However, as of recently, it's taken a nose dive. Was there to eat a couple days ago, and we both had breakfast. While the service was good, the food was seriously lacking. The bacon on my plate looked like it was cooked to perfection.(maybe 3 hours earlier) It was basically petrified by the time I got it. Biscuits were old and cold, eggs were cooked the way I ordered them, but were also completely bland. I understand that nobody wants to work anymore, and that these businesses are hiring anyone who will show up. But there has to be some kind of standard. Not to mention that breakfast for two cost over $30. After this experience, we'll be avoiding the Cracker Barrel in Newport. Diners beware read more

To be honest I haven't been very impressed with Cracker Barrel for a while. Hubby picked it and I was hungry. We got the pick two special and got a house salad with grilled chicken and vegetable soup. The salad was good and I especially enjoyed the buttery croutons. The soup was cold and had no flavor. Wow....yet ANOTHER price increase at Cracker Barrel. Drinks are now $2.59 and as far as I can tell, it appears everything has gone up. We will not be able to afford to eat here anymore if there is another increase. We have just moved to this area and this was our first visit to this location. We were upset with our experience at the Newport location. My husband and I are both very familiar with Cracker Barrel, especially myself as I worked for them for several years. We were seated quickly, but there seemed to he some confusion as to who our actual server was. When we placed our order it took a very long time to receive our food. They were not overly busy in my opinion, so must have been under staffed. I had chicken tenders, mac-n-cheese, and hashbrown casserole. My tenders were hot and crispy, but the mac-n-cheese was watery and so cold it had a skin on it. The casserole was also cold and dried out. I asked for them to re-heat the mac-n-cheese, and the brought out some fresh. I did not replace the casserole as Indidnt want to be labeled as one of "those" customers. My husband had chicken fried chicken, corn and pinto beans. His was fine except for the beans which normally are very good, but had no seasoning whatsoever. We both had tea, it was soured, so they replaced it with Sprite. Our server was Jonathan, who was very nice. read more

We stopped on the spur of the moment. We were seated right away. I ordered a ribeye steak which was cooked perfectly. My mother ordered the chicken biscuits which were enormous. There was so much food left over that my sons had a meal out of it too. I had the blackberry cobbler oh so good and my mother got her a hot fudge sundae milkshake yes believe it hot fudge sundae milkshake. It was just a special dessert at that time. Then we shopped around in the amazing store that crackle barrel is famous for. Found some great items. A few Christmas gifts. Love me some Cracker Barrel. read more

The place seemed clean and friendly when we arrived. At least the initial impression was about a quarter correct. Let me say that I stop at Cracker Barrel every time I go on a road trip. It's a tradition, and the food is usually tasty, and the service friendly. Most times, this has involved a CB along I-75 S headed from Ohio to Florida, most often somewhere in Tennessee. On the way down, we stopped at a CB in Southern KY. The food was bland and tasteless. At this store, the food was actually quite tasty, owing to the glory that is ham in just about everything. :) Though it's a minor miracle we made it that far. Sadly, our waitress ignored our table. She visited us twice in a 45 minute stop. Once to bring drinks, and once to deliver a box for our food. She had time to chat with a nearby table twice, but didn't even look at our table when she passed. Which is why she failed to notice my lemonade mug sitting on the edge for ten minutes. When a frosty mug of lemonade comes out of the kitchen in a restaurant, my world brightens just a little bit. What's better than a cold drink in a seriously cold mug on a hot day? (We'd just driven up from South Carolina, where the temperatures were holding steady in the 80s with 90+ percent humidity. Lord, give me lemonade!) Good, right? Yeah, no. When the frost melted off my beloved mug, I noticed some strange streaks on the glass. That's not very lemon-y, I thought. No, no it was more caramel-like. Light brown and streaky doesn't belong in a chilled citrus beverage. If you've never had caramel sundae skidmarks down your drink glass, I do not suggest you try it. First, ew. Second, how did the waitress not look in the glass and notice a finger sized streak of caramel? Ok, frosty. Maybe... but the kitchen--do they not clean anything? I mean it wasn't even dissolved a bit like it'd been through a hot rinse. Or a cold rinse. Or any rinse at all. The glass received more of a cleaning steeping in my cold lemonade, sitting lonely on the edge of the table as the waitress walked by again and again, than it ever could have hoped for in that kitchen. That is not the way you recycle. Our food runner was prompt in taking the drink off the bill, and replacing it with my requested water. Though she did bring me a fresh glass she poured herself, I was loathe to drink it. (That was very sweet of her, but unless she cleaned the glass herself, I wasn't really into it.) Our waitress didn't even show up to check on us after THAT. I know she knew about it, because at the end of the meal, around tip time, she came over to say "I removed that drink from your bill." Sure. Who are you again? At the registers, where I've always been asked "How was your meal?," the ladies barely made eye contact. They certainly didn't ask if everything was ok. This restaurant chain has really gone Downhill.My husband and I use to go to CB once a week for years. Nowadays we don't go there at all. The food no longer tastes like home cooking. It's more like a frozen microwave dinner out of a cardboard box And it appears they've cut the portions down to 1/4 of the original portions. I'd be ashamed to serve the "worse than pet food quality food (?)" they serve. They seem to think if they drown every dish with black pepper, it will make it better. IT DOESN'T. Stopped here on our road trip as I knew they'd have semi-healthy options for my hangry 14-month old. The wait was 5-10 minutes and our waitress was speedy and offered to whisk out our son's two veggie plate (Mac n cheese is a vegetable, right?) immediately. I ordered the salmon patty plate with two sides for myself and the hubs got the steak biscuits. My son ate one of the salmon patties, so those are toddler approved, and he was kind enough to leave me something to eat. Service was great. The checkout attendant was super friendly and helpful and we were back on the road quickly. I love me some Cracker Barrel! For starters, it was super busy when we went, seemed like a lot of locals, but we still got a table immediately, and they got our food out fast. Our server, and older lady was so sweet, and attentive. I wish they had her working at all the various Cracker Barrel's I've gone to through out the years I always order the fried shrimp platter when I go, and this time I noticed they were way to overcooked, and the shrimp seemed to be so much smaller than I remember them being, but it could've just been that they shrunk smaller due to being overcooked. read more
