We used to go to Boiling crab, which is a pretty long drive with 1-2 hour wait time. We start going to Cracking Crab since they first opened and couldn't be more satisfied. Normally have a good experience eating here but not this time. Service was pretty poor and the food wasn't up to it's usual standards. The sauce on the shrimp and clams was overly salty and the clams I ordered were very rubbery. I ended up trashing 90% of the clams. When I brought up this issue I got some lame excuse about how the clams are sometimes just like that because they are previously frozen. No offer of the clams being comped. I like the open atmosphere and even when it's crowded, you don't get that claustrophobic feeling like The Boiling Crab (at least I do). I've always been a patron of local businesses as I thought they are not your typical corporate America and it brings nostalgia in the community. This restaurant, however, does not belong in this category. Food was below mediocre and nothing to rave about. We chose the combo for dinner (crab, shrimp, sausages, corn and potato). As I said earlier, mediocre. In some restaurants the lack of sumptuous food is compensated by amazing service. Lo and behold, that was as bad as the food. Here's why: 1. You have to pay extra $3 for sauce. Who does that!!! The reason being is because they want to make sure they keep proper inventory. THE PLACE WAS EMPTY when we were there last night!!!! So not sure how much inventory they have to keep for sauce (which I'm sure is diluted with water!). 2. Server had the audacity to offer to pay for the extra sauce we requested. It's not about the money, it's the principle! If your restaurant is packed with white noise instead of people, then you go out of your way to entice customers to come and accommodate their request. We weren't asking for a jar full of sauce, just enough to dip the few shrimps into. Think of the smallest plastic container they have, that's all! 3. Server made it worse by offering dessert on the house. It doesn't make any sense. You can afford to reduce your dessert inventory but not the sauce?!!! Double insult here. Conclusion: Go to Boiling Crab, the original. They opened one in Burbank Media Center. They know how to run a business. read more

Food is ok but customer service is awful! I wish I could give this place 0 stars. Today, my wife went to the store and brought a coupon. After the transaction was finished and the credit card was charged, the cashier, Yoo Jean, looked at the coupon and noted that it was expired. She then gave my wife a cold response and asked, "Did you know that this coupon is expired?" She then canceled the transaction and the charged my wife the full price. I guess the 10% is more important than happy customer. Another time, I brought a coupon and another cashier forgot to take 10% off the price. Rather than redoing the transaction, he told me to use the coupon another time. What's also sad is that when you bring a coupon, they rip a piece of it off so you can't use it again. Talk about petty! Sheesh! I also went home and weighed the crab. They charged us for 1.7 pounds and it was only 1.4 pounds. Nice business practice. This place is dishonest. Comparing to the boiling crab, I think the price was more reasonable and food were served much faster. For someone who used to live in Louisiana, I have to say the cajun sauce was so-so . I think they mixed the sauce with something else that actually degraded the flavor. However, the crawfish was very fresh. and the crab legs were delicious. make sure to order snow crab legs rather than the king crab legs. The king crab is twice more expensive and has almost the same amount of meat. Also, dont forget to order corn and potato. Taste so good with cajun sauce. Most of the food is market price. Crawfish is 13.95 per lb and snow crab leg is 15.95 per lb. Street parking is available outside. You can also park behind the building. Really good. Worth not driving all the way to Alhambra for this kind of crab/shrimp fix. Their staff is super nice also- from their hostess, bartender, server, busboy and even manager who ran the food to the table. Our server Sean was super attentive - made sure I had a bib and even tied it for me and kept coming back at the right times to make sure we had everything we needed. Prices are nearly the same as Boiling Crab and Boathouse. Their "cracking sauce- spicy" is a lot more spicier than the first two though- I couldn't slurp the sauce like I usually do. This use to be my go to place for Crab after The Boiling Crab. When I first started going it was great. Then we had an incident there two years ago that made me not want to return. Two years laters I decided to try again after I been a regular of Crab Avenue. The service was slow and horrible. Had to get up ourselves and ask for drink refills. The crab was fresh and warm however the crab was like eating a salt lick. The garlic butter was non spicy but was loaded with so much pepper it was way to spicy especially for my kid. I found the Cracking Crab to be rather a rather unique experience. The menu and accompanying explanation was a bit confusing. Ultimately, we figured out the bag & bucket usage by observing other tables. There's a three step process where you pick the seafood (shrimp, oysters, crab, etc), the sauce, and the heat level. They steam your selection and mix everything in a bag. You grab your eats out of the bag. We shared the king crab legs and I also ordered the popcorn lobster. The crab legs were good sized & delicious - we went for the cracking crab mix and spicy. Spicy isn't super hot, but it'll make you sweat a bit. The popcorn lobster was lightly coated and very flavorful. The cajun fries were delicious (but could have been a bit more crispy). Overall, I enjoyed the experience and will go back - even though it was a bit pricey. On that note, I do agree with many of the reviewers that being able to order 0.5lbs would be nice. Also, while the decor is nice, they waste a lot of space - there's plenty of room for an expanded bar area (for quick seating...). Oh and sake & cajun don't mix! read more
