They had their "soft opening" today (8/4/2014). Ordered shrimp, crayfish, gumbo, and a basket of popcorn lobster with sweet potato fries. Fries were nice and crispy! It was all good. It's a roll up your sleeves full contact meal that will have you licking your fingers and ordering more beer. Definitely worth at least one visit so you can decide for yourself. You order your seafood by the pound and then pick the seasoning (garlic butter, Cajun, lemon pepper, etc) and spice level. Add a few sides like corn on the cob or sausage and you have a meal. The table is covered with butcher paper and the shellfish come in a plastic bag. Dig in! If you have been to Boiling Crab in Alhambra then you know the drill.....I won't compare because it's been a while since I've been to the Boiling Crab. Had the shrimp bag with potatoes and Cajun spices mild. Shrimp were farmed and not deveined. Before I ordered them I asked the waitress if she knew whether the shrimp were deveined but she had no clue what I was talking about. So I figured they weren't and ordered them anyway. I didn't mind cleaning them as I went along since I had to remove the shells anyway. The Cajun sauce was really good which was good because the shrimp were tasteless. My go to place for snow crabs. I always order the same thing for 3 adults and 1 child: - 2 orders snow crab, cracking crab mix, 1/2 pound sausage, 7 corn - garlic noodles (it's kind of expensive for just noodles but it's so packed with garlic and so good) I usually get it for take out and eat at home. I have about a 10 minute drive to home and it stays where fresh during transport. I recommend take out if you don't want to fight crowds! I've had the fried shrimp before and I didn't care for it. Now one of my favorite restaurants! I love how they're open lunch now because a lot of Cajun seafood restaurants open past 3. The owner is very kind and friendly, and he and his staff provide excellent service. The food came out hot in a timely manner, and they checked up on us often. One of the things I enjoyed with my food was their mac and cheese. It didn't taste like the easy kids microwavable mac and cheese. Their dessert is also delicious as well. It was interesting; a coconut-like flavor with a good crunch on the outside and soft ice cream on the inside. Will definitely be coming back.. read more

Overall the food and service was excellent. Our waiter Mario was exceptional. There when you needed him and not when you didn't and very friendly and helpful. This is only our second time here, first time right after they opened long ago. We were told they are under new management -- I like it much better now. First the Fried Pickles were amazing with the cusabi dressing. We kept it simple and ordered King Crab legs in garlic butter sauce and salads. Awesome alternative to Boiling Crab! Great service and overall tastes about the same. The place is very clean and spacious. The only gripe I have is that the corn didn't taste fresh. So - we did like the flavor of the food and the service was good. This is a very messy experience, but that's also part of the fun of it. Our problem was that the menu lists most items as market place, so we tried to ask our server pricing. We were specifically told that the lobster was 21.95 per pound and that most of the lobsters they're serving are a little over a pound, about 1.2 pounds. We ordered the lobster and we enjoyed it and then our bill comes and it's $45 for each of our dinners. When we questioned it we were told by the manager that all their lobsters that night were over two pounds - not at all what our server said. We just really felt duped and it ended our experience here on a really sour note. If the prices were just more up front, this all could have been avoided and they would have had a happy customer that probably would have returned. Instead our $50ish dinner turned into $90ish which we might have been fine with if we didn't feel so blindsided by it. I think honesty is always the best policy. read more

First time here with my family. The food is good. However, I was taken aback by the lack of plates and silverware.... And yes, the absence if crabs available on the menu. Also the absence of plates and silverware made it difficult. Instead we are supposed to eat off the table and dip our mussels in the oily Cajun sauce poured out in the table. Yes, quaint, but not when it pours off the table onto our clothes. Please get basic plates. If you can't get real plates at least offer paper plates. Yesterday was our second visit. After the first I would have given them 3 stars, but a couple changes and definitely bumped up a star. First time we got shrimp & mussels, both with their combo special sauce. I did not like the sauce, it was too overwhelming and you didn't even taste the seafood. So...this time we got the shrimp with cajun spice and it was perfect. Zing and spice, and full of flavor. Mussels & clams with the butter garlic sauce was also perfect. The fried calamari was better the first trip, but ok, this time, just a bit over cooked. The service was good and the owner and manager are super friendly and helpful. My only negatives are the lack of any kind of vegetable (corn & potatoes don't count) and also some bread would be really nice for soaking up some sauce. The food is great, the service is 10 stars. Seriously, waiters are so friendly, you feel right at home. We ordered the medium cracking crab sauce and it is a little spicy but perfect. Get corn on the cob and potatoes = perfection. First crab house I've been to that gives you gloves. We didn't use them but appreciated the option. Got one pound of the shrimp (for my wife) to take-out and it appears I was a victim of 'take-out syndrome.' (Restaurants sometimes dump an inferior product into an order that is not eaten on premises.). The shrimp were obviously not fresh. The shells stuck to the body of the shrimp and were nearly impossible to peel, and the shrimp had degraded to a mushy consistency. Perhaps they thought they could hide this condition under the spicy Cajun sauce. There were also gastrointestinal ramifications that manifested themselves shortly after consumption, if you know what I mean. Awful. Won't be back. read more

I placed an order to go for two Dungeness crab maybe a pound to a pound and a half each to go, I asked how much the bill would be and was told 40-45 $ depending on market price and was already surprised at the amount. Not getting a clear answer, when I picked up my order my bill was 90.00..!!!!!, the waitress was rude and confrontational!!!! when I asked why she didn't call me to tell how much the real price was she got irritated and I decided to deal with credit card company to deal with it. Finally, we have an affordable place in Montrose-La Crescenta to eat fresh and delicious seafood! My family went to Cracking Crab to try its crabs, crawfish, and fries. Everything was perfect! The server was proactive and kind to bring utensils and a bucket for wastes before we realized their need. Unfortunately, the crawfish did not have enough meat for our family. But since the crawfish were small due to a seasonal reason, we could not complain about the meat especially when the owner did not charge for the crawfish. The owner promised that next time he would serve large crawfish caught and frozen early in the season, so we want to try it again because the sauce itself was delicious and mixed well with the crawfish. read more

Well where to begin, by far the worst restaurant in Montrose. We went for a late lunch. We tried chicken and sausage gumbo $4.95, grilled shrimp and garlic noodles $19.99, fried oysters and fried shrimp basket. The gumbo was watered down barely any rice, needed more rue. So now the meal comes, they bring the rest of our order, they are giving us plastic forks because they have no clean dishes supposedly the dish washer didn't show up. I'm done no clean utensils, but what about plates that they are serving the food on. So now fries oysters are the raw in middle and the fried shrimp basket the shrimp texture was like jello. I always used to go to boiling crab until my husband and I moved to montrose and this opened up. What I love about it is the clams and shrimp are delicious- the seasoning is good.... Well everything is good! Much cleaner than boiling crab and no ridiculous line! Jeffery is a wonderful server! This is now our go to spot when we want this type of cuisine and we can walk here! Also parking is free here as opposed to boiling crab! This place is delicious. I went there for the first time last night and everything was tasty. I love to eat shrimp and this is my new fav spot.
