I've struggled to find a good stylist in Houston but I love this place. The two times I've been, I had positive experiences both with different stylists. I have thick, frizzy, wavy/curly hair down to my butt that's damaged from bleaching several years ago. I've had my hair cut by both Daniel and Andrew. Daniel did a great job in October, made me feel very comfortable. I did a luck of the draw when scheduling this week because Daniel was all booked but I'm EXTREMELY pleased with Andrew. He did an incredible job styling AND informing/educating me about my hair so that I could style it on my own. By far, one of the best hair appts I've ever had! My daughter suggested I try this salon after visiting several high end salons that claimed they were curly hair experts. I drove to the Heights location not sure what to expect. The initial consultation was a great experience, with a scalp scrub, massage, and curly cut that accented my natural curl pattern. I left the salon with a haircut that was very stylish, and best of all, I could manage on my own. My second appointment was for color. Gerri was able to expertly color and highlight my hair. There's usually rivers of tears when they get their hair done but it was reduced to just a light stream. They were patient and gentle with them and made sure they were comfortable. I had a wonderful experience today with Macy. I requested more volume and some education. She did a Rezo cut and gave me tips on everything from ingredients to avoid in hair cleansers to drying techniques. This is my second time at Planet Curls and I'm definitely sticking with Macy. I enjoyed her calm and confident demeanor as well as her knowledge and skill. Due to COVID they are not drying the hair in store. I finally decided to give this salon another try. It's been years since I've been, so maybe things have gotten better? Nope! I made my appointment well in advance and was really looking forward to it. Curly hair appointments aren't just on a whim either...you need to have your hair in a specific condition to have a proper dry cut. So here I am, getting my hair in perfect dry cut condition, and then I get in my car to head out to the salon. I'm halfway there (I live 20 minutes away) and I get a call from the salon letting me know the stylist, Macy, was running behind because a client's color was taking longer than anticipated and I would need to reschedule my appointment for another day. 10 minutes before my appointment! No apologies or attempts to come up with a solution other than 'Sucks to be you!'. Just a straight-up cancelation 10 minutes before an appointment that I booked 2 months in advance. This is Planet Curls. As you can see from my previous review, and many other reviews, this is just the way they operate. They either cancel your appointment with no advance notice or you show up and wait well past your appointment time. So if you're into toxic relationships, then you might be able to tolerate this place and *might* leave with a really good cut. Still on the hunt for the perfect curly cut. read more

So let's start with when I first got there I was maybe 10 min early for my appointment, I ended up waiting an additional 10 min because my styles didn't know I had arrived somehow even though I was the only person in the waiting area. The process itself took forever, the stylists talked trash about one another as soon as they were a little distance from each mother which was super unprofessional. They were open with the clients about not liking the work environment and wanting to leave. Honestly there was no difference in my curls besides her using way too much product to give them that defined look. Reason why it took me a while to post this review is because I did ask for a trim and just as I suspected the stylist BUTCHERED my hair. They get away with not properly cutting the hair because of the curls but I'm straightening my hair and I can now tell she didn't know what she was doing at all. What an incredible experience! My haircut with Macy was perfect. Since this was my first time there, she focused a lot on the education portion since I mentioned I don't really know what to do with my hair on a daily basis. She also paid a lot of attention to what I said I wanted to get out of the cut and focused on helping me get my hair there. Alright, now that I'm past wedding season hair and my stint as a semiblonde it turns out in the end, I liked it; I was just not use to the change. Now, while I really wanted to be 4 stars, cause it's not in the Sugarland area and I drive 30 minutes, grumble grumble, a girl next to me told Charlie she drove about 2 hours from Corpus to be their. So no grumbling from me and more affirmation that this place is worth driving 30 minutes to 2 hours for! (Her results are on their instagram page and she looked adorable.) I still only go to Macy and having a proper stylist is what any curly girl deserves, because she's the perfect amount of chatty and silent, so we're not having long awkward conversations. When I returned last year after my previous review, I needed it dyed again for job interviews and told her I wanted to cover up the fun blonde to have a more professional look. She totally got me and gave me the best "natural" looking hair color I could imagine, with just enough blonde peeking through, but not enough to scary away hiring managers. She didn't even need to look at pinterest pictures, she just simply understood my need. This time I came back, I showed her a picture of an instagram person I follow and let her know I wanted that shape and she was able to pull it off. She even told me she had to leave it a bit longer, because of shrinkage and she was right. She cut at least 4 inches off and it still shrinked by the second day, though the day before it looked a little past shoulder length. (It's still super cute though.) I was also interested in revisiting brunette world since I have naturally black hair and brunettes are a fun way to go without having to bleach for me. The pinterest pictures I told her she was able to pick out undertones that completely eluded me, so we decided on one pictures. By the end, I looked perfectly adorable with brunette/violetish hair with a cute springy hair cut. She even made a point to tell me that she'd put in the notes what mixture she used for me. I didn't even know she had notes for me. (I definitely have a hair stylist now if their are notes on me! Yes, I'm a tad giddy about this adulting moment.) Even with little things like telling her I can't have water with lemon cause of my citrus allergy, Macy was still super accommodating. She has a very calm and relaxing energy to her, that I think anyone can appreciate. She told me a lot about the stylists their, assistants, things that I was curious to learn about and it was interesting to learn how the assistant program worked. It showed me Planet Curls take cutting curly hair seriously. Their seems to be new assistants from my last visits and I believe a previous assistant is now a full time stylist, or he was previously and I just didn't pick up on that. Either way their is someone here for you and the caliber and skill they have really make the drive and price well worth it, while making sure you look cute in the end. read more

I looooove this place! They literally know how to nurture every curl pattern. They have a variety of clientele and they beautify is all. I haven't found any other salon in Houston that can even nearly match this place. Charlie cut my hair and I loved it. It really needed to be shaped. Jade usually conditions hair but Gerri has also conditioned it and I love both. It's not that close to my house but it will ALWAYS be my go to for my curls. Btw I am African American so I was a little skeptical at first but they easily accepted the challenge! 9/2019 update: So I've been going her off and on for about a year now but I hadn't been in maybe 5 months or so. I feel a little disappointed on my first time experience for a couple of reasons: For starters Katy cut my hair and everything going fine but when I transitioned to shampooing it went downhill from there. I didn't realize that the shampoo process was going to take so long. It consisted of lots leave-in products and it was never communicated how long I would be back there. Katy disappeared and then Leslie took over, which she was actually so nurturing and thorough explaining products and techniques for a first-timer like myself. I don't get upset if the stylist has to move on, that's fine but the lack of communication was subpar. Leslie did the majority of the work and was so sweet. However, she got busy as well once she put me under the dryer and then I felt forgotten. Finally, Katy saw me and came over to check on me only to realize the dryer wasn't even on right. 20mins of wasted time. By then, I was feeling uncomfortable of just sitting for so long. My appt was at 9am and I did not leave until 12:30pm. 3.5hrs for a haircut and style seems steep!! If that's their standard for the 1st time that's fine but again, communication would've been appreciated. My time is valuable too. The customer service could be improved and perhaps additional staffing to cover the floor after shampooing. Leslie tried her best but the fact of the matter is that I was forgotten. Quite busy for a Tuesday. I can't imagine what a weekend would be like. I loved the way my hair came out and that's the only reason I would be willing to come back. There's no denying this salon are pros in curly hair. I think little touches like pillows for support would help feeling more comfortable and simple communication explaining each transition in the process would go such a long way. read more

The curl rehab i NEEDED. I have been struggling for the last year to find a stylist who truly understands the science behind a head of naturally curls locks. I came in with curls that were clearly in distress and left with a head full of revived curls. I left with just one product in my hair and the most moisturized I've ever seen it. BLACK GIRLS BEWARE!! I got said Deva Cut over 2 months ago and my hair has yet to recover. What used to be Curls are now limp waves. A natural stylist told me that it's possible they used relaxer (perm) type ingredients in the conditioner. They tell us it will make manageable curls but really they are just putting it on like a texturizer!! OH THE HORROR!!! These may be super nice ppl and have great customer service but they are not for my sistas! Find you a black natural stylist and let your curls do what they want to do. Trust me, it's not worth it. But, at the behest of my fiance, I have spent the last two years flat iron free - but, still completely ignorant of how to treat my natural hair.
