I went to Crafty Crab in Besalem last Saturday I was not impressed. The wait was long. The place was huge with a lot of wasted space. There were only 2 benches in the overly large waiting area. They don't have a liquor license, so the unlit bar in the middle of the restaurant looked out of place. The food wasn't anything special. I had the 1/2 lb of snow crab legs and headless shrimp. The crab legs were so small, I thought they were playing a joke. There were 2 small potatoes and a small piece of a half of a corn on the cob. I asked for medium spicy sauce, I didn't taste any spices. The hush puppies I ordered were tasteless and gummy. Oh, and my lemonade came in a paper to go cup because there weren't any clean plastic cups or glasses at the time. the crab legs were great but that's it. clam chowder soup was floury and lots of potatoes maybe 2 clams in it, I had to ask if it was clam chowder and not potato soup. Got the boiled crab with added clams, again crab and potato with corn on cob came together in a plastic bag...what a sloppy mess. They did not soak the clams to get the sand out and we only ate a few because they were so sandy and gritty. This was my first experience with Crafty Crab. I got my food to go, and everything was hot and packaged nicely for the quick ride home. I ordered the blue crabs, fried shrimp, hush puppies, and coleslaw. I enjoyed everything except the blue crabs. Why you may ask? The lump crab meat was missing. I ordered a pound, which equated to 3 crabs attached to an empty body with legs, and claws attached to 2 of the crabs. I have ordered crabs from other restaurants and never saw a crab where the body cavity was stripped of the lump crabmeat. I paid $17 for 4 small claws and the legs. I fully understand that the size of a crab varies, so that's not my issue. If I had eaten in the restaurant, I would have returned the crabs. Ask before you order. read more

Heard good things about this place, so my boyfriend and I decided to try it out. Got there on a Saturday evening around 4pm. Wait wasn't long at all, literally was seated in about 5min. Sat down and it took about 20min before anyone came over to the table to acknowledge us, which was annoying. So by time the waiter came, we were ready to order. We shared a small seafood platter, comes with shrimp, crab legs, crawfish, mussels, and clams with potatoes and corn. Pretty decent amount for the both of us. We got the boom sauce and mild spice. It really didn't have a lot of flavor, we should have got medium. And it got cold really fast. Overall, it wasn't as good as anticipated. I've definitely had better. Decor of the place is outstanding. I had the steamed scallops in a boom sauce with medium spice and they were outstanding. Next I moved on to the 1lb of Alaskan crab legs boil, again in boom sauce only this time with the "fire" spices. Again, really enjoyed them. The spice isn't too bad if your overly sensitive to heat due to the crab shells more or less protecting the meat, but when you eat the corn on the cob at the end, wow...very nice. I can't wait to go back. Note: they still haven't gotten they're liquor license, so it's BYOB until that happens. read more

We were on our way home from a wedding and we're still hungry seen this place on yelp and always down to have some crab legs. We each ordered a pound of snow crab legs in garlic butter sauce with a mild spice added. Let me say crab legs are one of my favorite foods in the world. THESE WERE THE BEST CRAB LEGS IVE HAD IN MY ENTIRE 27 years of living! Food came out very quickly they serve their boils? In a bag to keep the heat and flavor. I will definitely be back again. We've been waiting to give this spot a try as soon as we found out they were opening nearby! While it's listed as a bar, it's only BYOB for now, so be sure to grab a nice bottle of wine or cold 6 pack go along with their flavorful menu items. My gf and I opted for the signature "BOOM" sauce which is a mixture of all of their sauces and the "FIRE" heat level is still pretty mild enough for anyone to enjoy. The food in this place is amazing and you get a tremendous amount of food as compared to similar quality restaurants. Their prices are very reasonable. In fact much lower than similar restaurants. But the quality, freshness, and flavor of the food is simply delicious! You also get your foot pretty quickly and piping hot! I've been to this restaurant 4 times in the past week! 5 stars all the way. As a side note if you prefer your food bland and/or not much seasoning this place isn't for you. This place was delicious. It's been a while since I've had Cajun seafood. It was definitely messy - I tried to just use a few fingers but I ended up using my whole hand to break the snow crab legs. My sisters loved the potatoes and corn (they're kids so that's understandable). The crab legs and shrimp were delicious. We got the spiciest we could which was okay. My mom makes things extremely spicy but this was doable. I can't wait to go back next time and try the others. read more

On 5/29/23 l went out to eat with my parents a waitress name Alyssa who took our order was out of line and very rude towards me because she demanded a tip from me after my parents had already tipped her nicely which she didn't deserve in the first place after bringing our food out she was only seen once I had to make a to go order with another waitress she then made it around to bringing my to go order along with our bill she insisted that we pay with her which I never felt harassed like that from any other waiter or waitress in my many times of eating in at this restaurant she was the only worker that I had ever saw conducted themselves so forcefully and rudely she is not a nice person no matter how she pretends to be at work and the tall Korean or Chinese woman who is mostly seen standing at the front cash register I'm not sure if she is employee a supervisor or a manager but she was standing there with a smirk on her face and said absolutely nothing at all while this rude employee argued me about a extra tip! read more

The seafood is really good. You can actually taste the seasoning in the food. The way the food comes out is extremely creative. It comes in a pan with a bag tied around it just like how people catch fish. The food is really good. Some seafood places I've gone to there is usually a nasty mucus taste in the back of my throat. Being from Louisiana this was a huge disappointment. This taste NOTHING like Cajun seafood. The boiled Shrimp and Crawfish were served in a plastic bag with what seemed to be a small mixture of water and oil. If I had to guess I would say they don't actually boil the seafood at the restaurant. It tasted like it was pre-boiled, frozen, then microwaved to serve. Corn kernels were not full and they were mushy. And they are extremely over priced. Even if the food would have been excellent the price would have been too hi. I won't ever order from this place again. I brought a seafood platter. When I ripped one of the shrimps heads off it was dripping with blood (not a paste) I called the restaurant to let them know of what happened and she said well next time I suggest you order it without the heads, people like the paste that comes from the head of the shrimp. Hubby and I went there a few weeks ago and honestly literally everything was bad too terrible. Hubby hated everything he ordered had gumbo it wasn't made right. Fried oysters were small and obviously frozen. Hush puppies were a bit doughy. Waiter was nice enough but we had to ask for silverware. Hubby asked for tarter sauce was told they don't have it but have something similar did he want that was told yes. It never arrived. I ordered steamed clams and mussels they were ok but I ordered them in a garlic butter sauce and they came in a very salty reddish sauce which seemed to be the same base as the gum from. I've been seeing so many reviews on Facebook about how everyone loves Crafty Crab. I wanted to go so bad I offered to pay for my friends meal and give her gas money if she drove. We got there fairly early.. before the crowd got there at least. It was about 5:30/6pm on a Monday night. After that it gets crowded to the point where the crowd is huge. The place is very spacious. Plenty of room for more tables to suit the large crowds. They're waiting for a liquor license but honestly I think them being BYOB is better than having the license because not too many restaurants are BYOB. On to my meal... for starters they don't have the drink options listed on the menu. Okay? How will I know how much I am paying..? Anyway I order two pounds of the snow crab leg and a pound of shrimp. It came with potatoes & corn & I also added kielbasa to my order. For the sauce I chose Cajun and Medium heat. I got my food and it looked and smelled great. Great portions and sizes for everything I'd say. When I tasted it the crabs were VERY over cooked like they sat on a warmer all day. None of them were clean breaks. They ALL STUCK TO THE SHELL AND I HAD TO SCRAPE THEM OFF. Two clusters of scraping crabs from the shell. How annoying.. the sauce tasted like a SWEET seasoning. Not a pinch of heat. I thought Cajun was a savory, spicy, almost tangy kind of flavor and to add a medium heat it should've bought the flavors out more. The food was so sweet I was convinced they didn't even put the heat in. I don't like sweet foods. They give me headaches and me being pregnant it does make matters worse. I wanted to send my food back but I didnt want to be that person. Also the kielbasa is very VERY sweet. I mean so sweet that it's not even appetizing. I do plan on returning since my friend I was with gave the boom sauce such a great review and said the spice was obviously there.
