This guy. Let me tell you about this guy. I stopped for gas one Sunday morning the year after lockdown on my way to work when used cars were real hard to come by and real pricey. He checked my oil for me and invited me to come back anytime I needed work done on my car, offering to help me out and saying what a great used car I had recently purchased. I took him up on his invitation and gave him a call when I needed the steering pump replaced. I told him I needed an oil change too and I wasn't sure what else it might need but I only had $500 or $600 to spend max. He told me to wait to tow it in because there was no place to park it but he'd take care of it if I brought it in a couple of days. Big red flag right there. I said that made no sense because he had a big parking lot and over the years I had always seen cars in need of repair parked there for days. Anyway, I fell for his promise he'd work on it right away and he had said that he understood I had no other transportation to get to work and for me and my son and I had a knee and back injury so I sure as heck couldn't walk to the bus stop a couple of miles away. When I didn't hear from him after I towed the car in, I got real nervous and placed several calls. Mr. Friendly mechanic was no where to be found and when he finally came to the phone his tone of voice changed to unrecognizable. Now he gave a story he needed more time to look at the car because it was a small shop and he only had so many lifts and he was busy. The days passed and he never called and never returned my messages. He finally came to the phone on one of my calls with a $2000.00 estimate. He said he could get it down to $1600 or I could junk it or leave it at his shop. But if I didn't pay him $181.00 for his estimate and have it towed by 5pm he was going to start charging me storage fees and keeping my car. I said I thought it was against the law to charge for an estimate after you not only invite a customer to come in for a repair, but he had never said a word about a cost of an estimate or how it would all work. He had kept my car at his shop for 12 days and had stalled answering my calls. I asked him how could he with any conscience charge me storage fees immediately beginning that afternoon after he had kept my car for almost 2 weeks and now was giving no notice to pick it up or even time to get a tow before he closed for the day. I said he knew I was broke from using an Uber for work for almost two weeks because he had my car and wouldn't return my calls and had almost made me lose my job. I reminded him he knew I had no other transportation. I said I never heard of a $181 estimate, maybe $60 or $75 and I asked him to negotiate. Mr. Friendly neighborhood mechanic was no more and scammed me out of my money. He had withheld my car from me for 12 days. Almost 2 full weeks. He had avoided my calls for almost 2 weeks and took no initiative to call me from the beginning. Now he was going to start charging storage fees immediately on top of the $181.00 beginning that afternoon, as soon as he locked the shop. I thought fast and decided he wasn't going to keep my car one more second. I paid him his extortion money and had the car towed directly from his shop to Hank Mays where they had a brand new steering pump and oil change done before 10:00 am the next morning for $240.00 so I could get to work by 10am. There was no excuse in the world for this man to keep a single woman's car with an injured knee and a minor child for 12 days, take no initiative to call or communicate, illegally charge $181 estimate after 12 days without prior notice, and come up with a $2000.00 estimate and some song and dance about having to wait even more time for parts, if I did go ahead and get the work done by him. Hank mays got the entire job done in a matter of minutes for less than the cost of his estimate. Sure, I called DMV to report Cranbury Auto. Pat over there who answered the phone sounded like it was his attorney answering the phone. I didn't dispute the charge with my credit card at the time for fear of retaliation. I have been using Cranberry service station for a few decades. These men are very professional, friendly, and so willing to go out of their way to help a customer. They've done tire changes for me, oil changes, I got locked out of my car once they helped open my car and always with a smile. Because of their excellent service I haven't ever thought they are too pricey. Seem to be almost comparable to the dealer but so much more dependable and informative. read more

If you want an honest shop who does quality work at reasonable prices this is the place to go. I recently was told by dealership that I needed work on my transfer case along with other work. I brought my car to Cranbury where they did preform necessary work however, they cleaned the transfer case area which was covered in oil etc and said to bring back after a day trip and put it up on lift and, low n behold transfer case was not leaking at all saving me big money. That's honesty I like and scored big brownie points with me. My car is running like new. PS I like the hometown atmosphere here. Like back in time in Mayberry with Andy Griffin and the gang ;-). Initially I sent the below correspondence to the shop, but never got a response. This is not meant to be mean or as a way of trying to "get back" at anyone, simply my review of my experience. : I came to you guys saying I was brand new in town and that you came recommended, I must say the experience couldn't have been worse. I brought in a car with 225,000 miles on it. It's nearly 20 years old and of course there will always be things to find on a car of that nature, but I asked for an estimate and was told $882. From there it was a few more hundreds of dollars for a switch that brought us up to about $1100 and then it was a pipe for $125. The next call the estimate was up to $1800 or so because the pipe was in a hard spot to reach. So the $125 pipe was now going to cost about $800 ($675 to install the pipe). Eventually we were over $2200 after more hoses were going to be needed and then finally we were going to need another $1400 before labor to install a new throttle body-which my mechanic says was damaged during the work. Regardless of whether he is correct or not is irrelevant. What is relevant is that we were now approaching $4000. That's when I said no more. In my last conversation with Ken, he asked if I would be proceeding or not. I informed him that I would have the car taken away. Ken informed me that no parts could be returned and that my bill was $1550.82 ($743 for parts and $697 for labor). After I have just put $743 of brand new parts into the car, Ken offers to junk the car for me. How insulting can you be? You have been advising me to put these parts in, and in one single phone call you're telling me that you'll get rid of the car and all the brand new parts? I never said anyone was being dishonest or nefarious in this entire process where I was without the vehicle for over a week and I still do not believe it was a matter of honesty, but a lack of professionalism. If we proceeded the final cost would have landed somewhere around 5x the original estimate. Will you find things when you dig into a car that old? Of course you will. But when you give an estimate of nearly $900 for a radiator (I can't find a single mechanic who thinks that's reasonable) the customer assumes that the digging has been done. In no way is it reasonable to offer up a transaction at one price and expect the customer to pay 5 x the estimate. You gave me a price, I then agreed to pay nearly double the estimate and in fact did pay nearly double the estimate for a job that wasn't even finished. I have a business and when I give an estimate I come very close to it because I investigate all scenarios before I enter into an agreement and a relationship with the customer. That was not done here. You led me down a path and I trusted you had done your due diligence. I was wrong and that was my mistake. A mistake I will not be making again. You certainly did make me feel like the "New Guy" in town. I hope for your future customers that you give them the respect of not offering an estimate and then asking for a price 5 x that number. I certainly hope you don't offer to "junk" their cars for them after you just advised them to put over $2100 in parts into it. read more

I've been a customer since John, Tom and Steve took over this service station 10 years ago or so. They - along with Martin, who joined them 4-5 years ago - have worked on both my Saab as well my 52 year old Ford F100. In all instances, they've done excellent work at fair prices - while also providing an extremely high level of "customer service". I also trust their honesty implicitly. They are a great asset for those of us here in the Cranbury community and the surrounding area. As I've told them to their faces, if they were ever to decide to "throw in the towel" (or greasy rag, in this case) and get into some other, less-frustrating line of work, I would simply be forced to hunt them down...:-) read more

I had my brake pads and rotary's replaced about 19,000 miles ago (just over one year ago) and they haven't been working properly for about 6,000 miles. I brought my car back in, and they refused to even look at my car. I realize that it sucks when you have a defective part or do a crappy job, but that's not my problem. In the past I could pull I and ask them to check the oil, now I'm greeted with a rude disposition and checking my oil was solely a favor being done for me... To quote "listen, I'm doing you a favor." As a woman who knows nothing of car mechanical matters, I have to trust and rely on the repair/maintenance guys I find. I cannot be complimentary enough about Cranbury Service Center. Tom, Steve, and John are what great service used to be about: efficient, fairly priced for excellent quality and staggeringly friendly. At first, it felt a little scary to be on first name basis with my mechanics but, let me tell you, if you get the treatment I get (utmost courtesy, efficient work and helpful to a fault) you'll be happy you can call them by their first names. I drive a 12-year old Pontiac Aztec which did very well until about a year ago. After Cranbury's excellent service a few months back, I feel I'm driving a new car. read more

This gas station prices are competitive now that they aren't full service anymore. While I miss it on those cold days I totally understand. Nice staff who will take time and talk with you. Never had car serviced there before but I know people who have and everything went smoothly. Like easy in and out of gas station set up as well. read more

I am a 32 year old female who doesn't know much about cars.I had a friend do some work on my car and the job wasn't done correctly so I came to the shop to get a quote on how much it would cost to fix my car. My service was awful to say the least. The people there took it upon themselves to fix my car with out even telling me a price, once they did the work on my vehicle they told me that it cost $650 for the job. Mind you I only had my rear brakes and rotors done and my friend had already bought the new brakes and one new rotor so the only part they had to purchase was 1 rotor. Prior to picking up my car my father had spoken with someone and made a plan to pay $400 on the day that I picked up my car and then the rest I was going to pay back by the end of the week. When I got to the shop the man there was arguing and yelling at my 72 year old father. I payed and left and I will never be going back. Come to find out I have a friend that went there and they also tried to tell her that she needed all of this work done and were going to charge her an arm and a leg as well. I feel that I was way over charged, taken advantage of, and disrespected. I will never go back to this place again and I suggest that you don't either read more
