I really enjoyed the chicken. The coating had real flavor and it wasn't greasy. 5 star chicken! Everything else was just ok. We came on a Sunday about 1pm. We weren't aware that they had a brunch buffet until 1:30. We were coming for chicken! We waited at the hostess stand for a while. The greeting was "how many?" We were led to a table. Nice table by the window with trellis and grapes and nice flowers. We had no menus. The server was more concerned about getting the creamers off the table into refrigeration than greeting us. This surprised me. The reviews that I read gave you the impression that service was going to be extremely friendly. So far host and server could care less that we were there. Finally the server took our drink order and said "help yourself to the buffet". I guess they just assume you know how the place operates. This gave me a chance to at least look at all of their offerings. The salads were sparse. The cucumber salad was the only thing that looked interesting. The hot food items included ribs and sausage with sauerkraut. Various potato items and mediocre looking other items. Nothing was really hot. I tried the mashed potatoes and the chicken. There were quite a few dessert items. My wife brought back a brownie, strawberry cheesecake slice, and some kind of peach or apple slop. I tried the brownie which was unremarkable. She didn't eat most of the slop. The restaurant is very dirty. Pushing my chair back in and out was disgusting with caked on grime. The carpet was incredibly stained. The restroom was a filthy mess. It irritated me also that "Brunch" is five dollars more than the chicken dinner we came in for. Of course the server never mentioned it prior to us seeing it on the check. We saw this place on the way back home from Lake Geneva and there were a lot of ppl waiting. So we decided to stop by. It took 30 min on Friday night to get the seat. We all ordered ayce fish and chicken. It took 20 min for food to come out. My mom got fish and my dad and I got chicken. We have a bite of mom fish body to try and the server came instantly to tell us that we are not allowed to share the food. We think it's rude to say that to customer coz we only have little bite to try not even take a while fish. The fish is very tiny dish. When asking for more, server only gave 2 more of small pieces. Third time we asked for fish, server only give 1 tiny piece. For fired chicken, I'm not sure how could this is a world famous when it's so salty and bad quality. The broasted chicken by my house is much better taste and quality. If you really like old salty fried chicken, this is the place for you. We have better choice by our house and won't come here again. Arrived for 12 pm Thanksgiving Dinner. The line was long at this point. We sat down at our table that was right next to the line. I could not hear what anyone was saying at our table. It wasn't peaceful at all. The folks standing in line were very loud..it was this way for the whole 2 hours! I was surprised to see what was on the hot buffet table, I swore I wrote down over 12 items they would be serving on the hot buffet line, including PRIME RIB and green bean casserole. An young woman, who wrote down our reservations, assured me there were Green Bean casserole and Prime Rib on for Thanksgiving Buffet after I asked specifically for these 2 items! There was no Prime Rib and no green bean casserole! We were so angry and disappointed. Now looking back at the time the reservation was made, I feel because I asked specifically for those 2 items she assured me 2 times over they would be on the hot buffet line, they needed to make their quota to make the Noon time slot booked for Thanksgiving. No one asked how our meal was today. We were beyond disappointed. The server didn't help us feel comfortable or was even warmly friendly. We told her we haven't been there before. It wasn't worth eating there, after our experience. There were only 7 items on the hot buffet table, compared to the 12 items, I was assured would be there. The only good that came from that hot table was the fried chicken and ham..the sweet potatoes were raw and never cooked through, the potatoes were dry along with the turkey. Their dessert table was huge, almost 3 times the size of the hot buffet table, the only good one there was the Strawberry pound shortcake. Was there the other day, Thursday, The food was very good.....BUT.....they raised the All You Can Eat chicken price to a way overpriced $16.95. Outrageous......AND......they now charge a percentage of the check for using a credit card. This place is good but not good enough for me to absorb an increased cost considered by many sitting around us to be excessive and an unannounced practice of charging for credit card usage. We stopped by this place on the way south coming from Lake Geneva, WI. There is a large chicken statue outside so you cannot miss it. The interior decor was nice and they have an awesome looking bar with several mounted deer heads above it. The waitress said they are known for their broasted chicken, which is all you can eat, so I ordered that. It was very good chicken and comes with a choice of mashed or french fried potatoes and coleslaw, which are also all you can eat. They also give you a basket of rolls, some of which are cininnamon rolls. They have honey butter to go with them. The wife had the patty melt, which was a half pound I think. It was one of the better patty melts I've had in a long time. Pros: Broasted chicken. (and a fish fry on Friday nights) Cons: The service, while efficient, was a bit slow. It seems as if low staffing was the culprit here, not the wait staff themselves. Our server worked a lot of tables. The prices are also a bit high. read more

As part of the lunch special we got fresh rolls, cole slaw, and a pair of potato pancakes that were also top quality. This place is worth the drive, even though it's about an hour away from where we live. The All You Can Eat broasted chicken is not only a great value for the price but it's also flavorful and juicy, just like what you'd expect from great chicken! Get the mashed potatoes and gravy and you'll have real potatoes not the fake ones that come from a box. We also sampled the patty melt with fries, which was a large fresh patty of beef and crispy rye bread, making for a delicious sandwich. The servers are all friendly and offer great suggestions for anyone who can't decide what to order. Overall I'm so glad we found this place because we will go back again! read more

I've been going to Crandall's for YEARS!!! I have never ordered anything other than their broasted chicken. They are in my top 3 establishments for best fried/broasted chicken of all time! This chicken is broasted and is Mmmmmm good! It is sooooo incredibly juicy and flavorful! I love the crispy skin. The chunky mashed potatoes with creamy yellow gravy are absolutely DE-LISH! The coleslaw is more on the sweet side versus savory and it tastes great! The cinnamon rolls are sooooo good! I have to push the basket away after eating 2, otherwise I'd end up filling up on them before my chicken was served! The restaurant is a large space and can easily accommodate large parties. In addition to the main dining area, there's a bar area with booth seating and an enclosed room with seating. The outside area is picture perfect with an arched gazebo, waterfall and beautiful plants & flowers. If you want the best broasted chicken, then Crandall's is definitely worth the drive! read more

Although my rating is only 3 stars, we had a very good experience at the restaurant and will return. The wait staff was great- very friendly and didn't appear annoyed when we had questions or problems. The food is where we go a little awry... the broasted chicken was DELICIOUS. Not at all greasy, it was moist and it came out hot. I had a twice baked potato that looked like it was 87 times baked and baked over just as many days. The filling was still edible, so it wasn't a total loss. The coleslaw is slightly sweet, which I prefer, and the serving is a typical small cup. A couple of people had the fish fry- both said it was delicious, but one person sent the first round back because it was cold. They both indicated that their fries were also lukewarm. I think with just a couple of tweaks, a 5-star rating would be deserved. I wish I could have given an additional 1/2 star. At any rate, we'll definitely be back! read more

My husband and I tried Crandalls because we had a craving for fried chicken and the reviews raved about it. Well the chicken was delicious. I like white meat which tends to be dry but theirs was nice and juicy. They give you bread which included cinnamon rolls. They were more of a subtle flavor which did NOT take away from how delicious they were. The cole slaw was good as well. The only reasons they didn't get a 5 star was 1-our waitress wasn't very friendly, which was surprising as it seemed like everyone else there was. 2- the sides were not impressive. The mashed potatoes were cold and the fries were dried out and had an "old" taste like they made a bunch and let them sit under a warming lamp. We will definitely give them another shot....I'm hoping to change my rating to a 5. read more

Plenty of Mashed Potatoes covered this embarrassing entrée. Basically just tossed Dinner and went to Dessert. Another disappointment. Lemon Merage pie was Just whipped cream on a crust. Another YUCK. So disappointed! We have always wanted to go here. There are cars in the lot so we thought it must be good. Wrong guess! We were seated across from the kitchen entrance which was messy. There were other open tables, so not sure why we were seated there. Banquet was closed and that's ok, but that's what the restaurant advertises. We were a party of 4. My husband and I, and our 20 year old son and his girlfriend. All got the chicken. The waitress brought my husband and I a breast and and another piece of chicken. Our son (who is 6'1") and his gf where given a chicken leg and 2 wings. When it was time for seconds they got the same. Really! We are paying full price. Give everyone larger pieces. This place is amazing!! The food is fantastic, the portions are HUGE, and the staff is incredibly friendly. Two of us had the all you can eat broasted chicken (it's SO yummy) which comes with homemade mashed potatoes and gravy (yum!) and coleslaw. Seriously an A+ meal! The broasted chicken is what you order (it IS their specialty of course). If you do, and are a fan of this style cooking, you will be exceedingly happy. The mashed potatoes, long the staple side-dish of this style chicken are better than most as taste real, with a few lumps and some of their red skins and come nicely plopped onto your plate using the ice-cream scoop disher. Note to self if I come back: Just get the all you can eat chicken. Do not get the fish. We arrived for the all you can eat friday fish fry at 5pm and the place was packed! We only had to wait a minute or two to be seated though. Once seated, we probably had to wait about 5-10 minutes to get service and get our drink orders taken. After we got our drinks we got some sweet rolls which were a tasty appetizer. Then we ordered our food. I got the fish and chicken combo with french fries. It took another 15 minutes to get our food. The broasted chicken was so hot and fresh and tasty and cripsy! It was sooo good. The fish was also pretty good. The french fries were tasty too. I finished that and got another plate of chicken and fish and realized at that point that I liked the chicken better. But after getting close to finishing that plate i was very full and i was getting a bit sick of the fried taste of the chicken and the fish tasted like it was prefrozen. So I heard from several friends that Crandalls has the best chicken they've had. Stopped by for lunch on a Thursday afternoon and I knew right away it was Crandalls by the 6' tall chicken statue in front of the building. When you walk in the bar is to the left and dining area is to the right. It had a real country type of atmosphere that is very pleasing to the eye. Once we were seated, the waitress brought a basket of dinner rolls that also included some glazed covered sweet rolls. After looking at the menu I ordered the all you can eat chicken for 13.95 and came with Coleslaw and fries but I ordered a baked potato for a small up charge. My mother in law order the 2 piece all white meat dinner that came with the same sides I mentioned above for 8.95. My wife ordered the pulled pork sandwich. When ordering the chicken for the all you can eat I requested all white meat and much to my surprise there is No up charge for that. I have to say it was definitely one of the best tasting broasted chicken I have tasted. So I ate 1 large Brest and 8 chicken wings, 2 coleslaw, and half the baked potato. The potato was fresh and seasoned on the outside which I like. The coleslaw was tasty with a creamy base. My mother-in-law and the wife both agreed that the chicken was excellent. The pulled pork sandwich was tasty but a little to much sauce for my wife taste. The fries were plentifully and pretty good. As for the hostess and the waitress they were very attentive to our needs and friendly. Always asking if I wanted more chicken or a refill of my drink. They also serve pie there by the slice or you can purchase a whole pie for 15.00. All pies are the same price. However we passed on dessert. I think they are homemade there but I'm not sure. We will definitely go back again if we are in the area. They have a large parking lot so I would assume it gets pretty crowded at night and on the weekends. Let me start by saying that the food is excellent. We had broasted chicken (all you can eat for $10.95). The broasted chicken is terrific. They pressure cook it just like White Fence Farm and the chicken is strikingly similar. Great crispy crust; excellent flavor; very moist. Were this strictly a food review, Crandall's would get 5-stars all the way. What drove me to issue only 2-stars was their rediculous policy of not allowing you to take home leftover chicken. They start off your meal with three pieces of chicken delivered to the table. Two people at our table were unable to eat the entire meal, leaving two pieces of chicken uneaten. When we inquired about possibly getting a take-home bag, we were immediately rebuffed. They have a policy where you may not take home any of the chicken! Now I can understand that the policy is in place for those who want to 'stock up' on chicken as it comes to the table and then try to take it all home. But to deny us the possibility of taking home leftovers from our original order that WE PAID FOR?!? What was even more shocking is that upon leaving, I surveyed a couple of tables that were awaiting cleanup and was downright SHOCKED to see all the uneaten chicken laying around. I probably counted three or four whole chickens left on the tables that nobody was allowed to take home. A terrible, terrible waste. I really think that Crandall's should revisit their leftover policy. Perhaps they should revisit their "all you can eat" chicken policy. We dine at White Fence Farm down in Lemont all the time. Their chicken is served family style and is not all you can eat. We always seem to leave stuffed and with plenty of leftovers. None of it ever goes to waste. Knowing that the owners of Crandall's fosters this type of waste, I will likely never return nor recommend this restaurant to anyone. On the strict subject of food quality and service though, the food was excellent and the service was good too. It's just the sour aftertaste of wasting food that I can't seem to get out of my mouth. read more

My review is going to be biased do to me just plain loving broasted chicken. I don't think I have ever had broasted chicken that I don't like. I didn't even look at the menu. I just said bring me the broasted chicken that's what I came here for. This place serves up all you can eat and it's fantastic. The mashed potatoes were as good as the chicken. They just keep asking you what do you want more. I nearly had to roll myself out of there. I sat at the bar and watched the news on tv while stuffing myself full of chicken mashed potatoes coleslaw and bread if you want it. It's just outside of town.
