I have always loved Crankers' food. I have gone at multiple locations for a few years now. I love the outdoor seating area at this location. The only bummer was that they told us to seat ourselves and I asked her if we can sit outside, she said yes pick a table. So we did. And nobody came out to wait on us for 15 minutes so I had to go back inside and find someone. The sangria is SO good. Very fruity. I very, very rarely leave a negative review or even complain at all at a restaurant. We will never come here again. We have driven by this place so many times in the past 8 years and never felt compelled to try it. Last week Sunday we intended to have lunch at Shuberg's only to discover they're closed on Sundays so we decided to give Cranker's a try. They were busy (half full, so short staffed?) when we arrived at 2pm. No big deal, everyone is short staffed these days. Server was pleasant & efficient. The food was horrid! We ordered the pretzel appetizer; no side plates to eat from, no utensil for the cheese sauce. Fine, we asked and the server brought the items to us. Two orders of chicken strips, a gyro & the brisket Philly. The chicken strips & gyro were okay, nothing special but not great. The brisket Philly was inedible--I literally told my family my shoe would have tasted better. The cheese looked like a piece of melted plastic and then one fatty slice of beyond dried out meat. Server never asked how things were despite only three bites taken. When everyone else was done server asked if I'd like a box. My husband very politely told him no because the sandwich was so terrible. He said "Sorry, I'll let the kitchen know." Comes back with the check, nothing taken off, nothing else being offered in place of the sandwich. Husband asks what the kitchen said? Answer: "They said they'll cook the meat for less time for the next batch". Well thanks, that really helps us and the fact that one person at our table didn't eat lunch today. Husband politely asks if a manager is around today, yes, I can send him by. Manager comes over and says sorry, I can give you a gift card. $100+ dollars with tip (2 chicken strip baskets, 2 sandwiches, 1 appetizer & 1 beer) and we left with a $20 gift card. We will NEVER be back and will warn our friends as well. What would it have cost the restaurant to remove the Philly charge or offer a different meal? Gave the gift card to my neighbors with the promise they get NO food, just enjoy a beer at the bar to use up the $20 gift card. YUCK! This was the worst experience I've had at a restaurant. The food was lousy and there was no manager in charge. The bartender who was supposed to be in charge was a total jerk. My wife enjoyed the Greek Salad - loved the salad, pita bread and dressing; I had the Oliver Burger which was delicious, served with house made well seasoned potato chips -also good. Service (5) - Great service. Our server was attentive and pleasant. Atmosphere (3) - Half of the place is a jazz bar with a really great atmosphere. The other half is like a Denny's. Pretty bland and boring. Food (2) - The Good: The beer was very good. I had the Bulldog Red i think it was and it was very smooth with great flavor. My wife had the coconut stout and really liked it. Which is amazing because she hates stout's. She also enjoyed her greek salad. The Bad: I had the brisket sandwich. The price for what i got was so not worth it. First there was barely any meat on the bun. When you looked at it sitting on the plate all you could see was bun. Second had very little BBQ sauce. So essentially I had a meat sandwich with very little meat and very little flavor. Add that its $2 for fries really made that meal hard to swallow. The kids chicken tenders were a major disappointment as well. I've gotten better nuggets from a Tyson dinosaur bag. Overall - I think I would go back here because they have a very diverse menu. This Cranker's location is only good for breakfast and even then they are okay at best. They order their food pre made and you can taste it for sure. I had the pancakes this morning and not only were the pancakes either frozen, instant, or both but the syrup was old. It was gross. I usually get the turkey sausage and eggs and while the eggs are usually coddled at least they're made fresh. The coffee is okay too. I really appreciate the morning wait staff but the staff on other shifts has always been disappointing. I'll always come back for the morning ladies though. read more

We met here for a family reunion over the holidays. The long cafeteria style tables worked well for our big, social group. I don't recall the food being anything spectacular, but it got the job done. The Saganaki appetizer was flame broiled at our table! Seared cheese....mmmmm....... Also, they were able to customize a menu item for my mother in law's dietary restrictions. The beer was good. I'd been to the Cranker's in Mt. Pleasant, so when a colleague suggested we try the Big Rapids location when visiting over Labor Day, I was hesitant. In a state known for its coney dogs, the mid-Michigan variety didn't live up to the expectations. I was pleasantly but highly surprised when we entered the Big Rapids location: Though the restaurant looks like a badly- and hastily-converted Denny's family restaurant, passing through into the brewery was a treat--vaulted ceilings, oak accents, a nice bar. I was amazed that such a place existed in the cultural and culinary oasis of Big Rapids. Then I met the owner. With only two waitstaff on for the holiday, they were overworked and understaffed, so the owner seated us and took our drink orders. For this we were pleased. That was about the last time. Drinks didn't appear for about 20 minutes, during which time the manager kept checking back and then barking orders at the clearly-busy servers to get us our drinks, never taking the time to actually help them out as his business was slammed. Finally, as a waitress moved toward us with our drinks and to take our orders after being yelled at across the restaurant to, "Hurry up, ladies," the manager took our menus and left us. So there we sat, with no menus, trying to remember what we'd decided on 15 minutes earlier while the pushy, rude manager walked away with our menus. The actual waitstaff, though radically overworked, was amazing-just harried. As best they could, they were timely, responsive and incredibly knowledgeable about the house beers. But the food came out bland (my pulled pork was dry and with only a modicum of flavour), the beer wasn't anything special compared to the nearby microbrew scenes sprouting up throughout Michigan, and the owner had so completely destroyed my notions of the place I'll happily never go back. I usually love local places over chains, but when I go back in November, I'll be hitting Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the game and get a drink. It's not worth going back here. read more

A friend's family invited me out to Cranker's last weekend. I'd been to the Coney Island before and swore it off - their food is not good, the service is hit or miss. But because everyone seemed eager, I joined them. We did have 8 in our party, so I had some leeway in my original expectations. First off, the service: Our drinks were nothing spectacular. I ordered their housemade root beer and was extremely disappointed. I ordered a sample of the Pistola Pale Ale and it smelled like perfume. He never came back to ask if I liked it. Our waiter would disappear for ages. When he took our orders, he didn't let us know they were out of certain items, like rice (RICE!). So when our food came out and it was noticeably missing, I inquired. He said "We're out of rice." Nothing was said on his end about a replacement. $10 for a cheese quesadilla with beans and rice, but no rice. Beans were lukewarm, not hot. Two of our party ordered the brisket special, which was $17. It came out with 4 tiny pieces of meat, lukewarm in temperature. We arrived at 5:00pm, ordered our food at 5:30, and finally were able to leave at 6:45pm. The service took way too long. The hostess checked on us more than our waiter did. Thanks, Cranker's for cementing why I feel so horribly about your establishment. Next time I'm offered a dinner from Cranker's, I'll stay home. read more

They have a wide-variety menu with typical bar selections. Food is usually decent and comes out quickly, except on Ferris game nights. I highly advise trying their new artisan pizza menu. It's only served at night and takes about 20 minutes but taste wonderful. The burgers and sandwiches are great where you can mix-and-match bun styles and toppings but I recommend exchanging their fries for a different side, such as veggies or sweet potato fries. Their regular fries are the only thing I truly dislike. I would say it's above average for a brewery. The best thing about this place is the environment. Often they have live music which is usually a local, student artist. They have plenty of tvs for sports nights. Their beer is brewed in-house and they have seasonal changes. My favorite is their Bulldog Red, which is a regular. Not a fan of the Coconut Porter but it's unique, I'll give it that. You can purchase a six-pack or a growler to go. The bartenders are a blast. Really friendly, they seem to know their regulars and I have had many a nice conversation. You'll find a mix of all ages and demographics here which I like in a college town. The food portions are big but if you have room for dessert, you must try their house-made pies. My favorite is the coconut cream. One of my favorite spots in Big Rapids. Love their Fifth Voyage Coconut Porter. Food is usually very good and typical brewpub settings. Service is usually very good but they were a bit off today. Very slow and not attentive. I had the olive burger which an old standby. Very good. My wife had the wet burrito which she said was very good. My daughter had the mac and cheese which was very creamy and a very large portion. My son had the fish and chips and was very happy with it. Not a fan of Cranker's! The silverware was foggy which they said was from the dishwasher. I'll give them that but the silverware she brought back was just as foggy.
