Crate was one of the few places that were open a Sunday night in Sturgeon Bay, that also offered any vegetarian fare. We were seated right away, they weren't too busy even though we were there during the height of tourism season. It seems like they have some local regulars, which is always a good sign. The restaurant was dimly lit and nicely decorated, definitely an upscale atmosphere. We were so, so excited to find that Crate was a Coca Cola establishment. Those seem to be few and far between in Door County. So we happily ordered some Diet Cokes, and some refills. Come to find out later, they were $3 each!! I had a vegetarian sushi roll, and Deb ordered a Ramen bowl. They were pricy, but not more than one might expect from a touristy area. However, comma. $20 Crab Rangoons? Surely these must be some amazing rangoons, mother. We had to try. My sushi roll was fine, maybe a bit heavy on the vinegar from the sauce that was drizzled on it. The Crab Rangoons were hot and fresh, but honestly not any more amazing than those from my local Chinese restaurant. I likely wouldn't order them again at this price. If I am in the area again, I'd go to Crate if that is what the group wants to do. For me personally, it was just a bit too expensive for what it was. read more

On our last night in town, we decided to give Crate a shot. After a long day of exploring, we were hot, tired, and seriously hungry. Parking on historic 3rd Ave was easier than expected, probably due to the fact it was Sunday and most shops had closed by 4 p.m. We walked in and were greeted warmly, then settled into a nice booth to check out the menus. The menu was on the small side, but I noticed a pork belly ramen that sounded tempting. I ordered it without the pork belly though--my gut told me to skip it this time. My friend ordered a vegetarian sushi with tofu. We also shared six crab rangoon. They cost $20. Yes, TWENTY bucks! They were tasty, but honestly, nothing to write home about. We were happy to see it was a Coke place and ordered diet cokes and a refill. After the hot day, we were parched! But then the surprise hit: each diet coke was $3, and refills weren't free. We weren't warned beforehand, but okay. All told, with ramen, half the crab rangoon, two diet cokes, and tip, my meal alone bill topped $50. For the price, I expected a bit more. Few quick shout outs: our server Elijah was excellent and gave great recommendstions, things are conveniently labeled gluten free, and the water is flavored with cucumber (which is great). We found this place because saw it had good GF options, they have a lot they can modify to be GF. My dad is a traditional American guy so was skeptical he would like it but we'd able to really enjoy the GF ramen! I also got the GF ramen (which is too hard to find these days) and it was really good. I'd really recommend it, especially if you haven't had ramen in a minute. The drinks we got were also exceptional. My parents weren't going to get a drink, but then tried a sip of my Twisted Rocket and had to get one of their own. We came here on a Friday for my wife's birthday. This place has been on by bucket list for a long time. I was impressed with the ambiance. Kind of upscale decor and soft jazz music. We were seated immediatly. Our waiter was prompt and masked. He took our drink order. The menu offered several kinds of sushi. I opted fot one called "whole shebang". A short time later we got our food. The sushi was a variation of a california roll with smoked salmon. It was fresh and enjoyable. I realize they are only open for dinner so the prices reflect that, but I thought $11.00 for one roll nothing else was a little pricy. Tried to go there last night for dinner (9/4) and got there right as they were set to open according to the hours here on Yelp.com and on their website, which says open everyday 5-9. We waited along with other customers for the doors to be unlocked and could see employees in the back but they didn't acknowledge the small group of people waiting outside. We went to another place for drinks in hopes that Crate would open and asked them if they knew why Crate was closed and they said "they're closed to clean". Please update your website/Yelp with current hours if Monday cleaning is a regular thing or at least post that you are closed on the door of your business. Friday night hankering for Steak and Seafood. Reviewed Yelp options in the Door County area and decided to make reservations at Crate for 7:15. We were promptly seated and greeted on arrival. Enjoyable ambiance. Started off with the crab cakes; overall lacking flavor and dry. I would recommend a different appetizer. We then ordered a double round of sashimi, decently fresh. Tried the lobster bisque and baked crab French onion soup... meh. Pork chops were definitely the highlight of the meal, very flavorful. There are literally crates hanging from the ceiling. However, not in a college dorm room cheap kind of way. But rather in an industrial, artsy, cool, kind of way. The bartender was simply one of the happiest, friendliest people I have ever met. She provided drink recommendations and opinions on the drinks which she makes. She was very attentive and just fun to be around. I feel if it had not been for the way she started our night, this review would be taking a different turn. The food was also amazing. We started off with the spicy tuna roll. This most certainly brought the heat. Thankfully, we both enjoy a little fire in our mouth and enjoyed the spice. I could see that for some people it would be far too spicy. I had the pork belly Ramen. This is not your college Ramen. This Ramen was flavorful and hearty. The taste was spectacular. Everything about this bowl of Ramen was perfect and I could have eaten two more bowls. My fiancé had the pork chop and it was delicious. If this evening consisted of the bartender and the food, I would be giving this restaurant five stars. However, the service was HORRIBLE. It isn't really that big of a restaurant. There appeared to be three or four servers. Each one maybe had two or three tables. Unfortunately, our server seemed incredibly annoyed to have us in her section. I don't know if she was having a bad night but it was fairly obvious she did not want to be waiting on us. We never heard the specials. She never asked us if we wanted anything else to drink. Additionally, the food took FOREVER to come out. It was probably 45 minutes between the appetizers and the meal. During that time, we never saw our waitress. We actually thought that she may have left for the evening. Come to think of it, I didn't see the servers around very much at all at any of the tables. The only time I saw the servers, they were hauling dishes and glasses to the bar area from the back kitchen area. One other thing. The water has cucumbers in it. I wouldn't call it water with a hint of cucumber. I would call it cucumber with a hint of water. This is not a subtle taste of cucumber, mind you. This is as if you were drinking a cucumber with a straw. The taste was so strong that had I seen our waitress I would've asked for some tapwater in its place. If you go here. Sit at the bar and eat. You will have a five-star evening. If you choose to sit at a table, best of luck. Perhaps, bring a flare gun to get the servers attention. read more

Waited an hour and fifteen minutes for frozen sushi. This place had the worst service I have ever experienced. Don't waste your time!!!

Very disappointing experience at this restaurant. Wanted to take out food because they say on their website that they offer that. Called to order, was told they are too busy to take an order over the phone, we need to come in. Went in to order was told they think they can't take a to go order but the bartender said she'd check. We were ignored for another 15 min then ended up saying we could order. Order took forever! This whole ordeal started at 7:30 and we got home with cold food at 9:15pm. The miso was the saltiest food item we've ever tasted. The lobster bisque was cold, sushi was very underwhelming. The calamari was somewhat decent but cold. The funny thing is although the bar had people at it there wasn't anyone in the restaurant. I've tried this place before but am never happy with the experience. This time will be our last time there. They are one of the few restaurants open on Monday night in the area but I'd still skip it, it's just not worth it. read more

The cocktails and food (we usually order sushi and recommend the Crate-ifornia roll) are delicious. Interesting is the best way I can describe this place. It's described as upscale/fine dining and but I am not sure I agree. The place has nice seating, glittery wall paint and crates, as the name says, all around. We had calamari which is cut like a french fry, rubbery and thick but the sauce is delicious. The soups lack any type flavor and the fact they tried to do something different and failed, shows. The sushi is nothing to brag about and everything is quite overpriced. Our server was trying too hard to be funny to the point it was inappropriate. From the decor to the food and wine, nothing goes well or tastes good together. We were greeted and seated immediately and looked over the menu. Now in these days of COVID, the staff were all wearing masks, as they are required when not seated at your table. Our waiter kept his distance when taking our order as well. I heard through the grapevine that their lobster bisque was amazing, so I decided to get it along with some crab cakes. It wasn't long after our order was taken that my bowl of soup came out, and it lived up to it's reputation. It was so good, creamy and delicious. The crab cakes were just okay. In my opinion they were over done and just didn't taste good. My husband, who is a sushi lover, ordered the whole shebang roll. What a disappointment... NO MASK/UNSAFE COVID ENVIRONMENT, uncomfortable/snippy staff, food takes forever or doesn't come, overpriced mediocre food. Serious review/info below, but for comedic relief my husbands review was "An okay porkchop with a side of maybe COVID". My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary in Door County and asked a local for a restaurant recommendation. We were pointed to Crate and booked our reservation for 8:30pm on Saturday night. When we arrived, there were people set up on the sidewalk, a few people at the bar, a large bachelorette party and a couple of tables- not super busy, but a good amount of people. When we started looking at the wine menu, the waiter Tom was wearing his mask under his chin while all other employees were masked. We went to MANY places in the Door County area and were super impressed with the sanitation and protocols in place to keep visitors safe and feeling comfortable. This was the first and only time we felt uncomfortable during our whole trip. When he came to take our drink order, he now had fully removed his mask, kept it off the rest of our visit and could care less. To top it off, I saw him wipe his face/nose several times... EW His demeanor was very off putting. He was very snippy with his commentary saying "Sirah/Shiraz.. whatever same thing" and when we asked about the Friday Fish Fry that is listed on the regular menu without any attention to it only being on Fridays (some places just call their item "Friday Fish Fry" and might include it on other days) he acted like we were dumb inquiring about it on a Saturday... I stopped responding to him and let my (very) patient husband deal with this guy so I didn't lose it... -I asked for lemon for my water: never got it -My husband ordered a glass of wine: stale, likely a bottle that has been open for days and had residue in the bottom -We ordered crab soup, a pork chop and 2 sushi rolls: soup was good, not great. Pork chop my husband liked since it was juicy/not overcooked, but I thought it lacked sauce/flavor and the asparagus was SO salty. We received the pork chop 50 minutes later with no sign of sushi. Another table was very angry and asked when their food was coming and had a little tiff with the same waiter. After waiting with no food, we decided to cancel our sushi order feeling like we would never get to eat. I have a feeling something was happening in the kitchen, they ran out of ingredients, or they have pre-made sushi and don't make it in house. We literally went to Culver's after... To top it off, another younger waiter serving the bachelorette party in the middle of the restaurant was making lewd comments, was very loud, and hamming it up with the ladies. Not ideal for our romantic dinner out... likely should have put them in a corner of the restaurant to not disturb others trying to enjoy their evening. This was one of three dinners to celebrate our anniversary and was by far the worst part of our trip. Had it not been so late, we would have eaten somewhere else but many places close by 9pm so we were stuck..... Disrespectful, weird vibe in the air, no communication, no mask, no sushi, and mediocre overpriced food. I will start by saying that the food was delicious and the presentation was great. I had a tuna roll and the whitefish, my wife had crabcakes and lobster bisque. All were great. We were welcomed enthusiastically by the host, The restaurant was well lit and clean. However, I am only giving it four stars because it violates a pet peeve of mine, that is it's very loud and hard to have a conversation over dinner. This was my husband and I's favorite restaurant in Door County. We would come here for any special occasion (like tonight, our first wedding anniversary). Our meal was great as usual, but once we got our bill from our waiter and he told us to have a good night, we noticed the bill was off. We got three sheets, one that had the amount $48 and the other that had $51. Our waiter had no clue, so we reached out to our waiter and he had the manager help him figure out what might have been happening. Come to find out, we had an issue with our card (our bank app was down so the money didn't transfer, I wasn't concerned though because I also had cash on me) so we went up to the manager and she immediately had an attitude. At the time, I was not sure if the $48 was taken off the card or not so I had asked if the $48.00 was taken off the card or if I had to just pay the difference, and if the $48 was voided. She then rudely stated, "I don't know what you want me to do about it." Which made no sense since I was asking if the whole bill had to be paid or just the $5 the card was off on. She then (rudely again) asked "So what do I need to take a number or something." Acting like we would have no other means of payment. I felt she treated us poorly because she viewed us as some stupid young kids. I had enough cash in my purse to buy everything on the menu 100 times. Don't make assumptions and don't give your customers some insane attitude. I understand it may have been our card that caused the original issue, but our waiter didn't even notice the issue to begin with. We were the ones who reached out to figured out what was going on. We could have walked out tonight without paying anything but didn't because we are good people. Not only did her attitude spoil our special night, the way she treated us like she was queen of some throne was honestly, disappointing. She chose to make a scene, chose to judge her customers, and chose to be unnecessarily rude. Sadly we won't be returning, and sadly we will always think back to this whenever we have an anniversary dinner again. Which is a shame. Also, I hope you are read this (Kate I believe her name is?). My experience was quite disappointing for a couple reasons. 1) The wait was quite ridiculous for take out. I ordered 3 rolls and edamame and it was an hour before I received my order. 2) I've eaten a lot of sushi all over the country and this was possibly the worse quality I've had. You'd be better off going to a grocery store unfortunately. The rice was dry and crunchy, the fish was like jerky and minuscule amounts. 3) Our order was incorrect, which normally wouldn't be a big deal but the incorrect roll was for my wife who is vegetarian. She wasn't going to just pick off the tiny pieces of fish. I called and they did refund that roll quite quickly, thankfully. 4) Last, I sent an email to the restaurant to share my experience and didn't get a reply or call back at all which leads me to believe they don't value feedback or wish to change. We decided to try Crate for the first time. The prices are a little high, but we were treating ourselves and we where excited to try it especially since they have sushi. The restaurant has a trendy atmosphere, nice table. Food overall was very good. However, wedge salad could have been better. It has a small three layers of lettuce with chunks of blue cheese and French dressing. Would have been better to have homemade blue cheese dressing keeping the chunks of blue cheese and include bacon. The French dressing over powered cheese. Lamb shank and rib eye was very good. Wait staff needs to work on their hospitality skills and avoid coming off as arrogant. Remember customers want a pleasant experience all around. read more

Let me preface this review by saying that I love sushi, I'd eat it every single day if I could. Raw, cooked, doesn't matter... sushi is always my go to food. Ok, now that we got that out of the way, the takeout sushi from Crate was some of the worst I have ever had... and the most expensive. Too much rice, bland flavors, and salty. It's tough to have sushi be both salty and bland, but Crate accomplished it. Maybe it would have been more enjoyable had I eaten in the restaurant and enjoyed the sushi with a few glasses of rosé, but the world will never know. read more
