We sat outside on a cool summer evening, so can't really comment on the inside. The food was well presented, but some of the meats could have been better marinated (salmon, stuffed pork chop). Sooo good. We stopped here as an included lunch with our trolly tour, and loved it. The California salad and sushi was fresh and flavorful. Staff was rather curt. We got takeout and they put all of our sushi rolls in one container. The edamame was already cold and the rolls were not good. We ordered two of the "avocado kappa" rolls (avocado and cucumber) and they each had more cream cheese (which was not listed on the menu) than avocado and cucumber combined. The brussel sprouts were the highlight of our meal, even though they could have been crispier. I came here for a bachelorette party because it seemed like the nicest restaurant in the area. Crate was smaller than expected but we were still sat comfortably. Our server was very nice and had good recommendations. However, I think it's ridiculous to charge $7.00 for sake drinks. It's rice wine and not even REAL alcohol. I'm from Los Angeles and they wouldn't even charge that here. If you don't offer hard alcohol you should at least advertise that you can bring your own wine and charge a corkage fee. I would have much rather done that. Also, our food took ONE HOUR to get to us. Which is ridiculous. Maybe I'm spoiled in LA but sushi is usually one of the fastest made meals. So that just means they must have been under staffed which should never happen on a Saturday evening. As far as the rolls go there were a couple good ones but overall I was completely underwhelmed, especially for the price. I would say I've been to much better sushi restaurants but if you're craving sushi avoid this place on the weekends because the service is apparently slow. read more

Service was terrible. Our reservation was at 7pm. We were seated right away. Restaurant wasn't even half full. We didn't receive our food for more than two hours. We were served at 9:15. We asked the waiter what the issue was and he said they ran out of prepared sushi rice. It would take more than 40 minutes to make another batch. Seems crazy to run short on sushi rice in a sushi restaurant and it also didn't account for the other hour and 45 minutes. Waiter forgot my drink. Food was mediocre. Lobster bisque had no chunks of last lobster in it and it was thick like paste. We will definitely not go back there. read more

We made reservations for dinner this past Saturday for my Hubby's 59th birthday. By coincidence, it was also the place we stopped for lunch on a wine/brewery tour earlier in the day. (Lunch was burgers -- nothing special.) We really looked forward to having steak that evening. From the get-go, our waiter seemed annoyed. He blew by us several times (and the place was not that busy). Gave a quick rundown of the specials. My Hubby is a little hard of hearing, and ended up ordering an item they were out of. Instead of just explaining that it was not available, the waiter -- obviously irritated -- barked "I told you that already." He then walked away to give us more time to look at the menu. When he came back, my Hubby told him that his comment and demeanor were less than professional -- to which he replied, "EXCUSE ME???" He stood over my husband, posturing like he was some sort of tough guy. My Hubby told him to walk away -- he asked, "WHY?" -- and I pitched in and told him to get me the bill for the one beer I had since we wouldn't be eating there -- at this point he got loud and belligerent with ME. Hubby called and spoke with the manager today -- who (without hearing our side) took the waiter's side. It's obvious that the lack of professionalism and poor customer service skills come from the top down in this establishment. BTW -- we ended up going to Trattoria Dal Santo -- which had the BEST steak I've ever had, AND fantastic service. read more

First off, I have never been a big sushi fan but this place changed my mind. The decor was really cool, pieces of driftwood used as shelves for candles and really cool art on the wall. Our waiter (Benjamin) was spectacular! Great service, magnificent recommendations and very knowledgeable. Now onto the food, we shared four rolls, the Crate-ifornian, the the Golden Philly, the Crabby Bee and both our favorite the Flaming Hooch. All were delicious!! Been 1 hour and 5 minutes since we ordered our food... we are still here... and still no food. This rating is for the service considering we haven't gotten food yet. They said the chef was rolling our sushi, but then another person said there was still a ticket in front of ours... just be straight up with us. Also possibly offer us a free drink or a free appetizer that would be quick to come out. One of the waitresses also dropped a dish, and they were very slow to clean it up. Our family decided to try Crate for the first time for our daughter's birthday dinner. Our server, David, was lackluster and was much more personable and energetic with the people at the table behind us. I am leaving 3 stars rather than 4 stars because the oysters were served too warm, they weren't on ice which is the standard way they should be served. In addition, my bacon grits served with the scallops entree were lumpy and thick, definitely over cooked and not grits-like at all. We are staying in Sturgeon Bay on vacation and had dinner at Crate tonight. We did not have a reservation but they sat us right away at a table near the bar. Our server, Tom, was wonderful and answered all our questions about items on the menu. We started with the Crab Cakes that were delicious. David ordered the Lobster Bisque and we both enjoyed it immensely. My mouth was watering watching the sushi being served so I ordered a Philly Roll and it was fabulous. David had the Friday Fish Fry and said it was great. I had the Mahi-mahi with the blueberry reduction and it was terrific! We will definitely be back again. Tom was a great server and took great care of us. The restaurant was quite busy so we will be sure to make reservations for our next visit. read more

This was a pretty great meal. We got the Geisha Girl, Crate-ifornia and Edgy veggie roll. They were all pretty good, but the veggie was a little weird. The mushrooms did not go well in the roll...and we LOVE mushrooms. Whichever one was tempura battered was the best...but after a while the tempura warmed up the fish and it was unappetizing. We had a great meal a few weeks ago. Ordered the same thing tonight and rather than chicken in a sauce I received chicken and vegetables in a soggy broth. Our waitress showed up after the salad and we said it was good. She didn't show up again until after the dinner. When I told her that the dish was soggy she proceeded to tell me that I had told her it was good so how would she know to correct it. All she needed to say was, I am sorry you didn't enjoy your meal. My husband and I are not novices when it comes to sushi, and to be honest, based on my stylist' s review, I was pumped about trying this place out. First, the good. Sturgeon Bay needs this place to be successful. I personally think they are sitting on a gold mine. The beer selection was pretty good for a sushi place, not normally known for their tappers. Now....forgive me and I hope the owners read this. Our sushi rice was NOT COOKED ALL THE WAY. I'm talking crunchy sushi rice. We had the spicy tuna and geisha rolls, which wohld have been fantastic except for the undercooked rice. Both my husband and I were seriously disappointed. This restaurant came highly rated. My family and I were in town for a family vacation for the 4th of July, and were really looking forward to the seafood. While the ambiance was cool, and not typical of a small town in Door County, the service was probably the worst we've all experienced ever... dining out. Our waitress not only confused our order, but when she put the rest of the order in, it then took 1.5 hours with little to no communication on her part to receive our food. The experience was disappointing and could have been handled in a more professional manner not just on the waitress part, but also on the managers part. Never have we ever had to wait that amount of time and got ignored in the process at a restaurant , when the restaurant wasn't completely packed.
