I ate twice at Mercado Mexico and enjoyed my mix of the several vegan options each time. Each taco easily fits into one hand, so consider ordering several if you want a full meal. Both salsas are delicious--just recognize that the hot salsa will live up to that name. I'd love to see more apparent options on future menus for ways to get the veggie protein choices into other meal options. This truly a hidden gem on our drive back from big bear we decided to stop here and I'm so glade we did had to be some of the best tacos I've ever had and I'm from San Diego where Mexican food is a staple, the did an awesome job with their photography and website. Bishop is lucky to have this restaurant and market. Our favorite item is the Jackfruit Carnitas taco. All the salsas are delicious. The fruit slushees with chamoy are amazing too. I hope they add more plant based dishes to the menu in the future :) read more

This gem of a taco joint was walking distance from our motel, and thank heavens as we stopped in Bishop after a long day of driving. Delicious, fresh tacos, clean interior, pleasant and helpful service, reasonable prices and a lovely, shady dining patio. We had a chicken burrito and a 3-taco platter. Portions are healthy but not overkill. I had two chicken tacos and one veggie, and the veggie was so good I would probably get more veggie tacos next time! Hidden gem off the main street, we thought we'd take a chance and were not dissapointed. We had breakfast and ordered the menudo and the pozole, both were fu#%ing goooood!! The menudo did not have hominey and came with pata. I love it when it's served this way. If you don't like pata I'm sure they can serve it with out. It was so good we came back for dinner, had the carne asada burrito (good), 3 tacos, 1 al pastor (good) 1 asada (good) and 1 tripas (was a little too crispy but was good). The salsa roja was hot but really good. I made the mistake of not asking for green, but I'm sure it was good. We ordered the hot cheetos elote (good) The concha ice cream sandwich (good) and the fresa con crema (good). All in all it was excellent, I know I kept saying good. Found this little jem of eatery in the small town of Bishop on way back from Mammoth. A clean and well stocked little grocery store with a small cafe in the corner. Lots of Mexican snacks selections and fresh exotic fruits. Having read the reviews on the vegan carnitas tacos made with young jackfruit, I ordered two to try and wasn't disappointed. A squeeze of lime, a dab of red salsa, and additional crunch of radish made for a perfect 1st to last bite of tacos. We also ordered a bacon breakfast burrito (you can do bacon chorizo combo for $3 more) for me, a regular chorizo burrito for hubby, and a carne asada without beans and rice for kiddo. The spicy red salsa has a smokey and hint of tamarind taste. The green is a bit more tangy with a nice robust tomatillo flavor. The flavor was good on the breakfast burrito, like that fresh eggs was used not liquid eggs but wished it had sauté onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms (I tend to overdo mine lol). Plenty of potatoes in every bite and bacon were well distributed. Hubby was disappointed in his chorizo burrito. He said it tasted like a vegetarian burrito and not very flavorful like others he had eaten. I have to agree with him...it was rather on the bland side, the salsa only helped a bit. The carne asada was ok...not as good as King Taco one in L.A.. overall it was good but we had better. Service is friendly and courteous. I forgot to order their special fruit drinks since we have drinks already. Would definitely come back for the vegan tacos. read more

Their plant based tacos are something else. I usually am not a huge fan of the street tacos style, but this place makes theirs PERFECTLY. Bring vegan, we were limited on where we can eat in Bishop. Thankfully, we found this place and ate here 3 out of the 5 days we were there AND I enjoyed it everytime and never got tired of them. Their fake meats don't taste heavily processed at all and I don't know what it was about the tortillas, but they were amazing. This place definitely beats out alot LA vegan taco spots!! read more

We were looking for good street tacos on our way from LA to Mammoth and that's exactly what we found. Little hard to find and it was packed with kids from the local high school, but we called our order in and it was ready by the time we made it to the cashier. Heading home from our annual trip to Lake Tahoe our daughter Laura suggested we stop in Bishop, Ca @ Mercado Mexico. It was absolutely wonderful & the food so very delicious. My Mother was born in Magdalena, Sonora Mexico. She was a lovely cook But my Grandmother Rita was the epitome of a Mexican Chef blending all the regions, spices, flavours & alchemy to create the most sensual & delicious food (think of the movie , "Like Water for Chocolate") It was hot outside so we grabbed a burrito for my husband & I ordered menudo as my tummy had been upset for a few days. It was hot in Bishop to sit in their little patio so we took to the road. The burrito was fab - made with minced chicken and wonderful blend of spices & flavours. We devoured it as the menudo was a soup (took a few bites - Delish - but waited for home. Also took home rice (best subtle seasoning - just rice /no veg's- but perfection! Also brought refried beans, ceviche (have not tried yet!) & their salsa which is great smoky & Sabroso! This is true authentic Mexican in a little gem of a Mexican Market & Cafe!
