Okay so I've came back and this time it wasn't as good as the first time I came, about 3 months ago. Of course the workers are very nice and lovely but it was the food that was kind of disappointing this time. They didn't make it as good as the first and I think I know why. The owner of the place wasn't there today so they didn't try as hard as when she is there. Our potatoes were a little undercooked and that's one of our favorite part of the meal. I mean every restaurant got their good days and their bad days. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't the greatest experience today as I expected since I had high expectations since the last time I went. I'm so used to eating sweet crepes that I was hesitant to try a savory one. The pesto mixed with the chicken and veggies in the crepe was a perfect combination. The crepe also had toasted almonds which added a lovely crunch. Not to mention the side salad and home potatoes which also had a phenomenal taste! Not impressed. They initially told me they had nothing vegan at all. I was about to leave when another worker said they actually had vegan bean chili, so i ordered it. After a really long wait i went back in to ask about it and it seemed as if they forgot about it. Finally when it came out, it had butter and sour cream with it. So before i took possession of the meal, I reminded them that i asked for vegan, and they insisted that the butter and sour cream always come with the meal regardless, and would not take them back. We left very full and enough leftovers for another meal. Some of the greens were a bit wilted but it was for the most part a good salad. We went here and wanted to eat at one of the outside tables. The waitress was extremely rude and refused to let us order outside or give us menus, even though they were serving others. She told us we could "try" to order online or call in whilst sitting outside. Once another waitress gave us menus, she took forever to ask for our order and once we finished I had to chase her down to give her my card as she wouldn't come pick up the check. Love this place! Not only is it one of the only (maybe actually *the* only) places to get gluten free pancakes in the area, but the staff is always incredibly friendly and kind. My son is gluten free and we were never able to let him have pancakes when going out for breakfast. He would look longingly at the other kids' having pancakes while he had eggs. First world problems, I know, but still. Since we've discovered their amazing GF pancakes, we've come here for special occasions like Mothers Day and my son's 6th birthday - which happens to be today! Ok now I'm updating after so many years. Food yummy big portions. Their small Athena salad is huge and I add tuna and I'm not a fan of olives so they replace them with tomatoes. Their grass fed burgers are big and yummy and come with salad(greens) and fries (dollar more for sweet potato) did I mention their balsamic dressing is really good. Breakfast and pastas are good too. What I love about this place is that you order at the counter and get to sit where you want to sit, which currently involves some really great outside seating that is covered with a lot of plants. I really love their mixed orange and carrot ginger juice, which I think is delicious. I highly recommend the Greek crepe which is filled with feta, spinach, olives and what really gives this dish a particular je ne sais quoi is the fact that it includes these nicely toasted almond slivers that just really heightens the whole culinary experience. The dish includes a hefty side salad and fabulous mini cubed potatoes. All of the dishes I've had at this establishment have been huge and have been used to take home for my subsequent meals. I've also had sandwiches here, pasta, all of which have been fabulous. I don't normally like leaving reviews, but this meal made me so sad I felt like I had to. I used to love this crepevine, partially because they had tasty food, and partially because they had huge portions for relatively cheap. Well, I came in today to discover that's changed. It's the first time I've been in a while, and the menu (and the great prices) have both changed. I paid $50 (after tip) for two meals, a mocha, and a black coffee. My partner got the Petaluma and was okay with it, but it was nothing special, especially for approx $17 (I don't remember the exact price). I, on the other hand, got their El Baron Burger for $18.50. It was listed has having grilled red onions, mushrooms, avocado, an option of breads, etc., and when I went up, the cashier asked how I wanted the meat cooked--medium rare--and I was actually excited. It came out, and the portions are still huge, lots of fries and a large side salad, and they brought me a side of ranch I requested (although they forgot at first). Let's start with the positives... The fries are phenomenal. I'm a sucked for beer-battered fries, and these were the perfect combo of thick-cut and beer-battered to fulfill any craving, plus there were enough that I probably could have just eaten the fries and been satisfied. Second positive, good ranch. I can't really say more than that it was thick, flavorful, and the perfect combo with the fries. Third positive--great service. The people at Crepevine are and always have been great. So on to the cons... This is quite possibly the worst burger I've ever had, including friend and family BBQs. Let's go in order. I got it with sourdough. It came on pieces of toasted bread that didn't taste like sourdough. There were indeed grilled onions, but they weren't what you think of as grilled onions. They were barely cooked to softness, let alone caramelized the way you think of as grilled onions. The avocado was, well, an avocado. It was sliced relatively thick and laid on in such a way that it was like half an avocado laid diagonally on a burger--but it wasn't exactly ripe. Maybe I'm just not as big an avocado fan as other people, but having thick pieces of avocado on half your burger with none anywhere else just isn't great. The patty itself wasn't remotely medium-rare. No pink whatsoever, no flavor, and just in general not great. Finally, my biggest issue with the burger: It was completely dry. Because of the oppings and lack of sauce, it legitimately felt like my mouth was getting drier as I ate. I've never had a burger that bothered me this much with its dryness. The dryness was compounded by the fact that the side salad was also completely dry, even though it's supposed to have a vin. When it showed up, I had assumed that it just had a light dressing I hadn't noticed, but nope, totally free of anything, even just oil and vinegar. So, long story short, dry burger, dry salad, meh eggs, and great fries, at high prices even for Berkeley. While I would be totally willing to pay a higher price for the large portions, they've raised the prices higher than plenty of local restaurants or gastropubs while lowering their quality. I might come back just for the fries ($7 on their own), but I highly doubt I'll be back for an actual meal. read more

After Polished Nails I head to Crepevine at Center and Shattuck. This was the best club sandwich that I have ever had. (my order was to go) This is a very large meal. (this was 2 meals for me) The big sandwich has a BBQ grilled Chicken and Bacon with all of the rest of the fixing you would want. Large Fries Tossed Salad Napkins, ketchup, salt & pepper, plastic utensils. The Ice Tea was excellent and no sweetener needed. Photos attached show some of the presentation plates. This casual creperie/diner could use some improvements. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you. No wifi, but they do have beer, wine and bloody mary's! Score. The crepe menu itself I personally didn't love. There was not one reminiscent of a French crepe: ham, cheese, maybe with a fried egg on top. Simple, yet classic. They were all loaded with ton of ingredients and had peanut sauce, pesto, philly cheesesteak and so on. In the end, I still went with a crepe since I mean, Crepvine, guys. At $13, it was a ton of food. I however, really didn't enjoy my crepe. I went with the California - bell peppers, avocado, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream -- sounds good right? It was chunky. I love chunky peanut butter, but chunky crepes, not so much. Maybe the peppers could have been diced, rather than largely chopped. Breaking into the crepe, the peppers just flooded out. There was also nothing keep the insides together. This signature crepe needed something else to bind it together. The crepe itself was flavorless and sadly, left me disappointed. I rank this restaurant as -10. The food was fresh but totally absent of taste (both the savory disk and the sweet dish). This would have been acceptable for a hungry student but totally unacceptable with an $80 bill! The chicken apple sausage was not cooked but put into a crepe with unseasoned eggs. The home fries were so burnt, they were black on the bottom and then hidden is the greens which were masquerading as a salad. The place only had 3 customers and NOW I know why.
