This review is looooong overdue. My wife and I got married in San Marcos last year on May 27. We decided pretty last minute to scratch our dessert table for a donut wall and these folks were happy to help with a large order, somewhat last minute. They were so helpful and an absolute pleasure to deal with. We were a little skeptical of the idea of having donuts sit 8 hours before being made available to our guests. No matter though, they were incredible!! We got a large assortment and the quality was absolutely amazing. They were a huge hit! Easily the best thing on the menu and something I'll never forget. I use to think this place had the greatest donuts, but now every time I go in there, approx 8 am, on several different weekdays, they are out of everything, but glazed donuts. I use to get an awesome cronut here, but was told by an employee that I have to preorder the donuts I want, because they don't make enough. The staff is not friendly at all! I stood in line with 4-5 people behind the counter and once the lady in front of me left, about 3-4 minutes later I was asked what I wanted, like they were unaware I was waiting. I was lucky enough to have a coworker bring these to work. All that I tried were really good. Not too heavy like some other places, and super tasty. The French cruller was honestly one of the best I've ever had. So light and airy and almost creamy like it had baked-in custard. Anyway, I will be stopping by sometime again!! Love this place. Been coming here for years. We always get their fresh made croissants; ham and cheese for the kids, and add jalapeños for the hubs and I. Conviction of a Donut Lover... Recently, a friend of mine at work turned me on to Cronuts. I "Yelped" for place that makes them and that's how I found out about Crispy's Donuts. Story: I went surfing that Sunday morning and rushed home to get the kids to venture out for the First Annual "Cronut Hunt". We got to Crispy's about 9:30am and they were out of them. However, the person working there told me that they were making 6 of them and the wait was about 30 minutes long. I ask the person to save me 4 and I will return to pick them up. So the kids and I headed to a local park to kill the time but we return shortly and we hung out at Crispy's until our Cronuts were ready. The women working there was SUPER cool and friendly. She gave the kids some donut holes until our Cronuts were ready. Once they were ready, she places the Cronuts in a traditional Pink Box ready to be consumed. In return for waiting, she gave us a free Cinnamon Roll. How cool is that? The Cronuts were AWESOME! With 4 different types to choose from, my favorite was the Nutella Cronut. Regardless what you get, you will not go wrong. Our First Annual Cronuts Hunt was a success. We brought the spoils of victory and show cased them to the wife as devoured them! I have tried to come here twice before, once they closed early and the second time the selection was just really sad. Third time is the charm I guess, though not really, they had one lonely cronut left, the rest your run of the mill donuts, nothing calling my name. Where are all the cronuts that you see in the pictures here? Really throws you off, this is an older mom and pop shop, plenty of older locals with their morning coffee here. Only plain cronuts, not even glazed which was a let down. They are filled to order, I went with custard and while it was tasty, by the time I got home the cronut was soggy, no flaky crunch. I asked if I just came at a bad time and was told best is to preorder, so that seems what all the tasty pictures are, preorders, what a shame. $3 for one is ok I guess and I did like the service and the fact that they offer them, I just don't think I would bother to go out of my way to come back again. read more

A friend brought boxes of Crispy's donuts to a potluck and I can say that these donuts are definitely better than Dunkin and almost like Krispy Kreme's. The donuts were very soft and fluffy, without being overly sweet (Krispy Kreme's can get too sweet for me). The whipped cream donuts were my favorite, I was told the cream are house made and they were just perfect, not too sweet, not too overpowering. It's your typical donut shop...but what separates them from the rest is their fantastic customer service and the fact that they have cronuts!!!!! Shall I say more? I'll say a little more: I'll just talk about their cronuts. You have options here, which I like and they are made to order. They were out of the glazed cronuts, but no big deal, they just took an un-glazed cronut and glazed it for me. I wanted custard with a lil bit of whipped cream, and fresh strawberries. They did it all for me. I'm a fan of custard and not so much of whipped cream...but a little bit is fine by me. Oh and it was topped with powdered sugar. It's very comparable to DK's Donuts in the OC! It's a lot cheaper and it's local! They are very friendly, kind, and attentive. The rumors are true! This place is awesome. The first time I visited was 3 years ago, and they made a great first impression by custom-making a bavarian creme filled maple bar for me even though they didn't regularly stock them. I hadn't been back until today, and it's great to see that they've only gotten better since the day I first visited. As probably everyone knows by now, they offer some very tasty cronuts (croissant + donut = cronut). I went for the glazed and chocolate ones, adding a chocolate old fashioned, a maple bar, and a chocolate bar. It was tough to stop there with so many great choices, and it was a surprise to have that much variety at almost 8:00 AM on a Sunday! As for customer service, which for me is at least as important as the product, everyone was as pleasant and accommodating as can be. Being a complete n00b despite having been there once before, I confused the folks behind the counter by being in the perfectly wrong spot for them to be able to see I was waiting to put in my order - at the far end of the donut display case, accidentally hiding behind the empty donut boxes. Oops! No worries, I let them know I was still waiting to be helped when they started helping someone who came in after me, not really expecting them to stop helping the newcomers. I was a bit surprised that the older gentleman behind the counter broke away apologetically to both of us so he could take my order before theirs. Kudos for diplomacy! A little bit goes a long way. The cronuts were just as good as expected, but the wife and I both agreed the chocolate won out over the glazed. The maple bar was beautiful simplicity, lighter and fluffier than I'm accustomed to getting elsewhere. I still prefer my childhood favorite version from Tan's Donuts down in Oceanside (creme-filled), but I was far from disappointed with this version. We're saving the chocolate bar and chocolate old fashioned for tomorrow...or maybe later today as dessert! Summary: Great donuts, great service, minimal wait, and excellent selection. Okay, so this is partially my fault for coming at 10am and not like 6am or earlier. I drove from San Diego because everyone raved about their cronuts and after the 45 minute drive, they are all out at 10am, their selection is completely low, and I hate leaving empty handed. I suggest that you get here right as they open or as everyone has suggested, pre order. I ended up getting 3 doughnuts and what do you know? One of the flavors I wanted was for an order. After much picture review we each had our eyes set on a Nutella filled Cronut! I get the original glazed filled with Nutella, I didn't want to over indulge and get strawberries too but maybe for next time. And the husband gets TWO chocolate glazed each filled Nutella, and a chocolate twist donut. My husband and I are big fans of the chocolate twist donuts, it's our favorite and it took years to find out we love the same donut! He liked Crispys for the milk chocolate glaze, compared to YUmYum's dark chocolate glaze. I love both haha it's chocolate either way xP anyways.. While we're waiting for the Cronuts to be filled my husband downs the twist donut right before eating the Cronut as well. Cronut details: The flakey layers were perfect, nice crisp on the outside and fluffy soft layers in the inside. One of the better donut shops to get a cronut from. Variety is the same as any donut place. Location is easy to find. Like many donut shops, there's little room inside to eat.
