Tables will sit open, wiped off, and ready for somebody to sit down.... For more than five minutes. Bar seats will sit open for 10 to 15 minutes, but they're not first come first served And the person acting as host/hostess does not do a good job of managing that area. It often seems like a random waiter or waitress or a busser steps into the role of host/hostess us whenever they have a chance. If there is no wait whatsoever, Crossroads Café is a great choice. This was our first time in Joshua Tree and we had heard a lot about Crossroads Cafe so we decided to get breakfast here. I am vegan myself so I was stoked to see how many options and substitutions (with an extra charge) there were! I got the eggs with SoyRizo that came with cabbage, salsa, and black beans. To make it vegan substitute tofu for the eggs and ask for no cheese or sour cream. It was really easy! My boyfriend got the breakfast burrito but it didn't come how he was expecting. It had eggs, cheese, salsa, and beans in it but the beans and salsa came on the side. So he was a bit confused, but it was no big deal. Just a miscommunication on the menu, I suppose. While camping at Joshua Tree we were looking for a breakfast spot before our day began. It was Sunday morning and the place was full of people. I knew the wait would be long because of how popular it was on Yelp compared to some of the other locations. We waited approximately 30 minutes and I was fine with that. We were sat down and given menus then asked what we wanted to drink. Our drinks were brought out fast. From there it took our waitress 15 minutes to take our order. Then it took another 15 to bring out our food. We ordered "The Usual" with potatoes and cornbread. As we were just enjoying our breakfast which I thought was good. My food-mate said, "There's a hair in my scrambled eggs. We called the server over told her about the hair and that she didn't want to replace her breakfast. She said ok and walked away and didn't have much of a reaction almost as if she's used to it. Small but cozy looking hipster joint with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options of the unhealthy/junk variety, which is awesome, when you want it. Called ahead for a take out order and everything was smooth over the phone. The only issue was that it took a long time to get the food and the server was a little slow with getting us drinks. Came hungry on a Saturday for lunch around 12:30. We had just done a couple of hikes in Joshua tree. We were warned there would be a long wait, even for 2 people. We wrote our names down. You can kill time by checking out the wonderful farmers market next door. We were finally seated at around 1:30-2. It was packed and they're staffed pretty leanly. The service was great and even if they were busy, they always managed to smile. We had the: * Chicken cilantro soup - Was warm and fresh - which was great as we were cold. Overall though it was decent. * Ahi tuna burger with side of home style fries (+$2 extra for this side). - Ahi tuna was overcooked. Home style fries were great but cold by the time they served it. * Turkey club with side of mixed green salad - Loved the healthy serving of turkey and sprouts. What a terrible experience. Both times! Yes, I went there twice to see if the first time was just a usual misfire, but the second was worse. On my first visit, I went with a group of five and not only did our order take about 40 mins, but they even forgot about one. So instead of 5 different plates, we only received 4. Food was also cold and bland. We went a second time (two weeks apart) to see if the first was just a bad day as many people a places can have one. It was worse in my opinion. I went with the same group as the first time and we ordered the same items. Let me start with the positives. 1. They got all 5 orders correct. 2. We only waited for about 25 minutes. Which is strange since it seemed more busy on the second visit compared to the first. This concludes the positives of the experience. The food was not only bland once again, but it was cold and the potatoes were all undercooked. This is for all the plates. But, what made this experience worse was the terrible customer service. The older lady that was taking the orders was extremely rude and inviting. It felt like she was just done working there. Then, when I went in to check if our order was called (20 mins like I was told) she coldly, without even looking me in the eye, said "if it's not sitting there, then it's not ready". I'm not just going to walk up in there and grab at other people's orders to see if one of them is mine. That's not very COVID compliant. After 5 mins, we got our food and realized that they forgot to give us syrup for the two orders of pancakes. I went back in and again was treated with cold and rude personality. If you want good food at a better price and in a timely manor, along with great customer service, then go across the street to Country Kitchen. Trust me, you'll thank me. read more

We had been in for a coffee latte while we were waiting for pizza to be finished across the street on Friday night and, after not being able to get into Pappy and Harriets Saturday night we decided to give their dinner a try. So glad we did. Their burger is so good. I didn't think the whole wheat buns would be tasty but they were. And their homemade BBQ sauce is delicious. Service was pleasant and friendly. I've been to several different restaurants in the area but this place really stood out. My whole family loved it too. We came on a Sunday morning and put our name on the list. Excellent fish tacos, excellent service. This little place is right outside Joshua Tree National Park, and it is the perfect spot to stop after hiking. The restaurant bills itself as tolerant, kind, and high quality, and I agree. The inside is fun, in an ole Western style of decore, with modern steam-punk touches. The music is very cool as well. Stopped in for a mid-afternoon coffee break. This place is crazy busy at lunch and is clearly very popular with locals as well as the passing trade from JT park. There is a small bar, which is where we sat (and you can have a variety of "adult beverages" with your food), and there are a handful of outside tables too, besides the main dining areas. On the basis of the other reviews, we went with the coffee cake and a chocolate brownie. Both are good choices, but I think the carrot cake has the edge. Although it was a convenient stop, there wasn't a wow factor for us, hence 3 stars. read more

This place does false advertisment. They really like use the word vegan to describe the items on their menu. Even if the item isn't vegan. We ordered the hell burger vegan and we thought to just asked if the bun was vegan and what the slaw was made with. The slaw is supposedly vegan but the bun wasn't. When I told the waitress that it isn't a vegan burger since the bun it's vegan she didn't seemed to understand how it's misleading and technically false advertisment. She didn't even apologize for the inconvenienced when it was clear that me and my partner had a look of disappoinment and disgusted. She made it seemed like we should have known to ask for a vegan bun (sourdough bread). And she just walked away from our table. I then got up and went over to her and asked her to make us a new vegan burger and at first she made this look as if I was joking. This place clearly doesn't understand what veganism is. Me and my partner are vegan because we don't believe in harming or exploiting non human animals that are sentient beings. But also there are people that are allergic to animal products. They don't seem to understand the severity of the situation and they could easily have made someone really sick or possibly have killed someone. She could have also made me and my partner really sick the night before as we had gone there and order the same burger, since we have been vegan for years and the diary in the bread could have made us sick. Yikes. What a mess...where do I begin? I understand this is 1 of only 2 real restaurants in Joshua Tree but to call this a restaurant is a stretch. First off, You will wait at least 40 minutes for a table (or longer) if you stop in for breakfast, brunch, or dinner on the weekends. They will tell you it should only be "a few minutes" but it will definitely be at least 40 minutes so plan accordingly. Second, the service is horribly disorganized and slow. I understand they have a small kitchen but the wait staff failed in so many ways #1- They did not greet us promptly to get us water and drinks #2- They were not friendly nor did they offer recommendations #3- They failed to refill our drinks and didn't ask if we liked our meals. Third, the food is not good. Period. The chili lacked flavor. The side salad was a disaster (how do you screw up side salad?). The mac and cheese was salty and just not appetizing. I will say that the Tri-tip sliders were pretty moist and tasty (I have to give them credit for smoking the meat right out back). And then there's all the little things: 1) This place is a mess. It you look behind the counter you will see a number of things out of code and there's just junk everywhere. It's disorganized & dirty everywhere you look. 2) They are not friendly at this place. You will not receive a smile from anyone that works here and they will make you feel like a burden just for walking in the door.
