Great food and service. I love their giant pancakes! The service is fast and friendly. We've been here a few times and have always had a great experience. The restaurant is always immaculate and love the collection of mugs they use from around the country. We always prefer places with great homemade food to the corporate breakfast places that get overrun with the snowbirds. This place also tops the horrible hipster breakfast joints that continue to pop up with 'fusion' this and that. Never again! This was our first and last visit to this restaurant. We waited to be seated even though there were plenty of empty tables. The couple that were seated after us were finished eating and checking out when our order finally was delivered. Our waiter kept blaming his boss because she hadn't shown up for work. He repeatedly complained about having to work so hard and how busy he was. When our order fin arrived, I needed to send back my toast because it was drowning in butter. I had ordered dry sourdough. It was almost impossible to get the waiter's attention. It was impossible to get his attention to give us the check. I ended up going to the lady at the register to pay. She said she couldn't help me because I didn't have a bill. Finally, my waiter came to the register. He totaled my bill on the register. I handed him cash and left. They do add a surcharge if you use a credit card. There was no apology for his poor service. Never will go there again. There's too many places with good service and better food nearby. read more

This place is really close to my boyfriend's neighborhood so we are always here for brunch. Always clean, always has open tables, and we are always greeted with a smile when we come in. The food is great quality and value for the portions they give you. They are also very attentive and your coffee mug will never run dry. I'm compelled to write this review after stellar service from Heidi at noon 9/14/18. She said she was nervous because it was her first day but was an absolute personality champ and we had some great conversations about being from the bay area. When she wrapped our leftovers I mentioned I had moved to a new apartment and she went out of her way to set me up with extra napkins and utensils. Most of the food for breakfast was very good. However I ordered chipped beef on toast. There was barely any meat in it. I asked the waiter to take it back to get more meat and he returned it stating they couldn't do anything about it. He started it was pre-made and meat couldn't be added. Ok, for the good- the food is great and I love any mom and pop business, so I'm already biased there. The bad- service can be rough unless you have the gorgeous Melissa helping you out. The honest- you wait until they are ready for you. They won't overload their kitchen and you won't get a cold meal, but they won't take your order until the kitchen can take you on. Here is my tip- have them pour you a cup of coffee, get off the phone and enjoy the person or people you are sitting across from at the table! We dined in for breakfast, cold food slow service we got our toast about 10 minutes after we finished the rest of our food. No salt or pepper no checking on we were doing. Second cup of $2.99 coffee between finishing our food and getting our toast. We had to ask for silverware after we got our food. We did get cream, but no sugar or spoons for the coffee. I enjoyed my two experiences that I had at the Cryan onion café. It is tucked towards the back of the shopping plaza and not difficult to find. Walking up to the front of the restaurant, I am told it is not a visual Wonderland, but it is neat and clean. It does get very busy, and there is not a great space for you and your party to wait. Essentially, you walk in and put your name on the list, and for comfort reasons I would say we outside rather than crowding the front of the restaurant They have a decent cup of coffee, not at the XO roast standard, but much better than just a plain coffee. Service is very friendly, and they are very good about refilling your cup of Joe, especially if you are a caffeine addict. They offer a wide variety of breakfast dishes, some pancakes two eggs two biscuits and gravy he and so on. I have tried both the veggie scramble, and an omelette that was essentially a veggie scramble with bacon. For sides they often things like sliced tomato, fruit I believe for an up charge, potatoes and so on. You also get toast or an English muffin with your meal. It's nice because they do offer a slice of their homemade coffeecake in Lou of toast. I would definitely do that if you are not watching your calories. The food is solid. I can't comment on presentation as my vision is blurred out, but they do you cook their eggs well. They don't cook them at an overly high heat so the eggs do not get tough, which is a trademark of what many breakfast places do to save time. I would actually write this place more of a 3 1/2 star, but not quite before. While the food is solid, I don't feel it is exceptionally creative. This will be a great fit for somebody if they're looking more for homestyle cooking/country diner fair. I did also want to comment on the layout of the restaurant. It is not a large space, and while the tables are spaced fairly well, it is a little tight while trying to navigate through the isles. I love the sweet potato pancakes but their seating policy is ridiculous! Would not seat us until our fourth person got there. It wasn't busy and they let a couple groups ahead of us. There was no line, more than 5 tables available and we just had to sit and wait! Not customer friendly especially when you had two very hungry and bickering nieces! They ended up seating us after a bit and the food ended up being really good. The vegetable soup was delicious! I added a star. Give it a try. read more

Decent, no-frills restaurant serving breakfast and lunch in northwest side of Tucson. We both had the egg salad sandwich which was good -- not too much mayo. Bacon on the side -- I was actually asked if I wanted it crispy (yes, please). Tater tots for my side, which were also served hot, crispy and tasty. Food came out piecemeal, (sandwich, then bacon, then side order) and individually plated, which was okay, but unusual. Overall experience was good, but not unusually so. Visit if you're hungry and in the neighborhood (such as visiting the nearby Ferguson Plumbing showroom), but not worth going out of your way to visit. read more

It's OK but nothing to go out of your way for. If you're in the area, want breakfast, and there's no wait, then it's worth a try. Not a place to bring kids though. Not many options and they charge a ridiculous split charge for even kids to share. "But you each get your own side" OK great... It's only $2, but the idea of a hole in the wall breakfast dinner charging a plate split fee is crazy to me. It's not like it's some nice place that fancy's up each plate or unlimited sides or anything. The fruit side is good though, not the crappy old fruit salad that gets dumped in a little bowl that you usually get. It's a nice sized portion of fresh fruit. The pancakes are unique and tasty, but the syrup is just standard, cheap, maple-flavored corn syrup. Why bother going out of the way to make a good pancake just to make it taste like IHOP? If they would use really maple syrup, or half like cracker barrel, then they would be great. The biscuits though... Like that country song says "they ain't like momma fixed em". Dry, hard. Bleh. The home fries are really good. Nice and crispy, not mushy like most places, and seasoned well. I always wish there were more of them. Service is good and they are always really nice. Seems like the same few wait staff has been there for a while so that's a good sign. They should really hire someone to deep clean that filthy carpet though. Or better, rip it up and put down something a little easier to clean. I see them running the little push sweeper thing all the time, so it's not dirty from lack of trying, but it's hopeless. Overall, food and service was fine. Lower rating is because of what they charge for a kids' milk and coffee. I don't know which was more because the bill wasn't itemized, however for two kid milks and two coffees with no carafe left on the table, we were charged $10. Therefore, I assume that each drink was $2.50 and I can buy a whole gallon of milk for near that price. And typically kids meals include a drink, so we felt a little ripped off. Came here one morning with my 3 kids and husband. Food was okay, nothing special but nothing to complain about. Atmosphere is typical American diner. I felt that prices were a little high for breakfast food. I was disappointed when the server informed me I would be charged $2 to split an entree for my 2 & 4 year old. Just give me a plate I can do it myself! They each get a side but the point of splitting is that they eat like birds, I don't need an extra side! Don't get me wrong the food at the Crying Onion is great when it's great but truly horrible when it's horrible. The lack of consistency is an issue. My other major complaint with them is the fact that they have an extremely small area in which to wait. The hostess seems to be overwhelmed and somewhat cranky about this. I was yelled to "Close the door" when I had just walked in and repeatedly said excuse me in order to tell the hostess that my husband and I wanted to put down 2 people. The hostess took the name of the person in front of me and then walked away after yelling at me to close the door. I walked up to the cash register to put our names down and was snottily told "Please walk back to the front door" and I decided then and there that I was down with the Crying Onion. I walked out and I will not be back and I will make sure that I tell everyone I know that they should not go there either. Who do these people think they are to yell at there patrons! They need to get some organization and perhaps a larger area in which people could wait! Maybe give them something to hold, like a number sign that will differentiate who has already had there name taken! Enclose the outside area with all of the benches so that people are not crammed into the 5 square foot waiting area? I try to patronize smaller "local" businesses but Crying Onion will be crossed off of that list since they are not even capable to seating people! read more

To start with I had a wait as my girlfriend was running late. Which was fine at first. During this time I watched the tables being cleaned with the same rag he used on the chairs and several at a time without any sprays. The people behind me were seniors and shivering standing at the door. Three tables were open and the waitress tried sitting them at the table near the door. They requested another table (which was open and ready) she wouldn't allow that to happen. Maybe if she was kind that would count. Now to my service,I have places to be and whether my friend shows up or not I need to eat and leave by a certain time. I told her I was ready to sit and order and the rude attitude and lecture was uncalled for. I explained the above (with or without her I'm placing my order now) she almost didn't let me sit. I've eaten here plenty of times and the food is good. However, I've never witnessed such sloppy staffers. We also never had a refill on drinks. Made my meal very dry. Hope the owners start watching closer how their staff treats others and how they clean tables. PS Since I'm on a roll; the couple next to us complained about a roach in the bathroom read more

I used to love this place. Last two times the service was terrible. I figured I would give it one more chance. Sure enough, they didn't disappoint. Strike three. I came in alone today and waited for 15 minutes because nobody would clean off the empty tables. Finally I'm seated and it takes another 10 just to get a cup of coffee. Ordered a simple eggs over easy, hash browns, bacon and toast. Despite the place only being about half full, it took 20 minutes for my food to come. Oh and that was minus the toast. The toast took another 5 minutes which by that time everything else was cold. After finally getting my toast, I managed to finish my entire meal without a single water or coffee refill. We tried three different places this morning to find a breakfast place. Crying Onion was our third stop and so glad we did! The service was fast and friendly. Our food order was hot, fresh and fast. We shared a sweet potato pancake - thenone was enough for two adults and child to share. Literally it overhangs the plate. My son had scrambled egg and avocado. I tried their special of kielbasa with green chili and cheddar with eggs and homefries. My mom tried the Alamo omelette (tons of brisket in there and just enough spice to wake up your taste buds). We appreciated the wide selection of add ons/sides so we could order something for my 13 month son. It's always a challenge to find a place that has enough healthy choices than just bread for a kid and Crying Onion was awesome in this respect. Highly recommend! read more
