It feels like you're tucked away in an intimate little wine cellar, which makes the whole experience feel special. It can get a little tight in the seating area when it's busy, but honestly, I think it's worth it. The wine glasses are clean (which should be a given, but sadly isn't always!), and the wine is delicious. They also have an entire bowl of pickles that you can order, and as a pickle lover, I was very happy about this. The bread and butter is simple, but sometimes simple is exactly what you want with a glass of wine. But the star of the show for me was the pinto hummus. I know hummus is made from beans, but it somehow never occurred to me to make it with the humble pinto bean. Whoever came up with that deserves a round of applause. Chef's kiss. So freaking good. Sunshine Wine has great wine, a cozy atmosphere, and food that's creative without trying too hard. I'm definitely coming back for that pinto hummus alone.

I rarely write reviews and I don't do this in a mean-spirited way--I would love to see a local restaurant and bar succeed. It is just that we paid $83 for two drinks and 4 small plates, and couldn't eat two of them and left hungry. I hope the food can improve!

We had many drinks come to our table, the first round being the homemade limoncello. Made with local Meyer lemons, it is deliciously potent. A must try. It feels like there is ALWAYS something going on here. On my first visit, my girlfriend took me on a date here to catch a burlesque show. It was absolutely packed and everyone had a great time! And every Friday and Saturday night, there is some reiteration of a goth dance night ($5 cover). I also appreciate the slightly older crowd full of my fellow thirtysomethings, and the upstairs patio cannot be missed when the weather is nice. The cocktail menu isn't anything especially fancy, but there's still something for everyone to enjoy. My favorite is always the Prickly Heat--think a prickly pear margarita that's absolutely loaded with fresh jalapenos. It's not for the weak! There's also food, and while it's not mind-blowing or anything you'll appreciate that you can have a nice snack at midnight on a weekend. Surly Wench is a local cultural institution, and we're lucky to have it.
