Came back to Crystal this past weekend to see how the conditions have improved during the summer months, and I gotta say, the course is in pretty good shape. Less muddy, and greens were in great shape and really tough to read. Typically when I play, I always play the tees that the people I get paired up with want to play, and this time it was the blue tees. It's been 15+ years since I played the blues, and I gotta say, it's definitely way more challenging. The par 3s become extra long, you have to be more strategic with your tee shots, and definitely makes you have to play your longer irons for approach shots. If you can score well from the blue tees, you are probably a really good golfer. That being said, I got some work to do lol If you are a newer golfer, definitely play the white or red tees. And plan to bring a lot of balls because there's plenty of spots to lose them, especially if you are errant off the tee. The prices here have raised just a tad with a weekend round costing around $127 a person with a cart. I was able to snag a discounted tee time through GolfNow, so saved some money there. Overall, really fun course, my girlfriend's first time playing here and had a lot of fun. Definitely will be back especially since it's like 10-minutes from home. read more

This was my first time playing here, I have driven by hundreds of times and always thought about playing. I am glad I did. The pro shop was small, but had everything you needed, and the staff was all really friendly. The driving range was beat-up visually, but worked to get loosened up and make some pre-round swings. The course was really pretty. It was definitely challenging. There are virtually no flat lies and no straight putts. It's tough, but not so hard it's not fun. I also felt like the more you play here, the easier it would be. There are lots of blind tee shots and elevation changes, and lots of hazard if you're too far right or left. Even if your golf sucks, you absolutely cannot be the view from 90% of the course. Definitely not a bad way to spend an afternoon! read more

Played a round on a beautiful day today. The weather warmed up nicely after we teed off at 10:18 and when near the turn, I had wished I wore shorts!! I play here about once a month or so and take advantage of the weekday senior rate ($45 to walk). Today, the greens were a bit slow (looks like greens were aerated in the last month) and the rough was a couple of inches longer than usual, too, both in the fairway and green side (almost felt like Harding Park rough) and often just happy to find your ball and be able to gouge it out back into play! Since I wasn't hitting the ball as straight as I like, it was a fairly challenging day. Note: there is also a temporary green on 16th hole so it plays as a short par 4 right now (saw a sign in pro shop but starter forgot to mention it). But all in all, paired up with a great couple in their 80s and had a fun day, despite playing over bogey ball today!! P.s. Wish their bar and restaurant would stay open longer during weekdays -- usually closes around 4pm or sometimes earlier, right when you need a refreshment and want to relax for a bit after a tough round!! read more

I went for a friend's wedding, not to golf. There were no clear directions as to where everything was going to happen. The Lyft driver took a right, which took us to the club house & reception hall. Well, the ceremony was happening in the opposite direction. Too far to walk from one location to the other while dressed up & in heels. You need a car to get from one spot to the other. Luckily a friend gave me a ride back to the reception. As for the wedding space, it's a bit dated. The bartender looked confused and like she didn't want to be there. There were 2 signature drinks, but she only knew how to make one of them. Even told a guest she couldn't make it for her. The bride had to go order it for her. Crazy! I will say that the venue for the outdoor wedding is beautiful. Food was good too. read more

We went here at 1:30p on a Sunday and had a really great experience! I went with my husband and brother in law + single. We checked in with Nick and mentioned it was our first time at this course. He was super helpful and gave us a few pointers. The pace was a slightly slow for the front 9 but it was mostly waiting for groups to clear the fairway/green. There was a marshal/ranger that came by to push the pace whenever we were behind so we ended up skipping the green for one of our holes. When we got to the next hole, we still had to wait for next group to clear the fairway anyways.. Overall, we all had a pleasant experience! Pacing for the rest of the holes was pretty fast so we were able to get through it really quickly. Loved seeing all the animals on the course!!! read more

I grew up not from this golf course and played it in my youth, but more often than not played what was then called San Mateo Muni (Popular Creek). It certainly is a beautiful setting as it backs up to the Crystal Springs Reservoir, but the course is in poor shape. My friends and I played on Friday, and the cost was $102 green fee, $23 per person for a cart, and, unbeknownst to me, a $17 entertainment fee, which I found on my credit card statement and, when I checked again, had been changed to $10. I have disputed the fee with my credit card company, and they are investigating it as a fraud case. Since my friends and I are over 60, if we had played on Monday through Thursday, the green fee would have been $39. Ouch! Even at that price, given the condition of the course, I cannot recommend it. It is in dire need of repair and general overall upkeep. The land for the Crystal Springs Golf Course is owned by the City and County of San Francisco, specifically managed by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). While the land is city-owned, the course is operated privately by CourseCo, Inc., which currently manages it under a lease agreement. All I can say is there are better options available in the Bay Area, where the courses are well maintained, and green fees are in the $40 to $50 range, without being over 60. read more

I was gifted golf lessons a few months ago for my birthday and had a lasting impression that was horrifying. Bobby was my instructor and was nice for only half of my first lesson. He ended my first lesson but instructing me not to wear my golf skirt. I won't repeat exactly what he said on here as it is inappropriate. I was informed the lessons were flexible during the summer since there were a few holidays that would get in the way. To move lessons around it was no big deal, say something at least a few day prior, which I did. Coach Bobby was very angry and irate about personal feelings regarding crystal springs and took his anger out on me numerous times. There was raised voices and cursing directed at myself. Extremely unprofessional and unpleasant. I wasted all of my lessons with him and was discouraged to learn golf. It wasn't my first time playing but was treated as if I know nothing at all. I did have my final lesson with Coach Nick. He was kind, encouraging and supportive. He was misinformed that I knew nothing about golf and that my skill was poor, by Bobby. Giving an extra star for Coach Nick. Really disappointed in this experience and thought it would be best to not say anything but this is not a welcoming place for new players especially younger women who want to wear a fun skirt. If you're an older woman in a skirt it is not a problem to Coach Bobby. read more

There is a reason why this course doesn't get talked about. The pace of play is excruciatingly slow. Imagine waiting on a tee box for 10 minutes, hit a drive and have to wait another 10 minutes to hit a second shot into the green. We got to the third hole, which is a par 3, and there were already 2 other groups on the tee waiting. If they spaced out the tee times more and made it mandatory to ride a cart, then this would be a course I'd play regularly. read more

The upkeep on this course compared to the price is absurd. They removed a bunch of mats from the driving range so only about 10 people can use it at a time, the ball dispenser at the range was broken, course was in terrible condition and it hasn't even rained that much. Sad. This course would be so good if they put some money back into it. Until then at least lower the prices. read more

The course is in decent shape -- some standing water and mud in several spots. As a result, more "cart path only" holes than one might think (4, maybe 5, I think.) Some tee boxes have ruts, so you have to re-tee elsewhere so that your heel isn't in a divot. Patrons here don't fix their ball marks, I guess. I fixed 3-4 per green, myself. The bunkers were nice with plenty of fluffy sand. It's an old track, so there is only one outhouse on the course. There is a snack trailer at the turn (which is NOT near the clubhouse.) Pace of play was around 5 hours on a weekend. Parking is adequate. read more

I have been here for the driving range a few times. Occasionally there is a wait for a mat. There is a nice bar and outdoor tables looking over the range. Played 18 holes here once. Tee time around 2 pm but with delays from prior group we started 20 minutes late due a lack of available electric carts. Overall slower pace of play. Beautiful place. I have not played the course for a while due to the below average condition, crazily slow pace and very high green fee. The layout and view are great. The course definitely needs some work, especially in winter, it is not playable. I do use the driving range due to the location. The mats and range balls are very very old but the price is very high. Very often the range ball machine is out of service. People wait for long time but clubhouse doesn't do anything about it. I would give the course 3 stars, but 1 star to the range. Mariners point is way better (newer balls and lower fees with launch monitors). The facility should be managed by more professional staff who can take care of customers better. We really want to see some good changes. read more

If you don't mind 5 hour rounds and waiting on every hole, this is a great layout in the Peninsula. Because most holes are situated along the hillside, it's very reminiscent of Stanford Golf Course especially the 9th hole that's along the same type of hills. Greens are often well protected by bunkers so accuracy and shot selection is at a premium here. Course conditions were fantastic for a public course. Of course, if you don't book early enough, you may have trouble finishing. We played the 18th pretty much in the dark (8:05 pm) with a 3:33 pm tee time. I believe the course should consider making getting a riding cart mandatory and included in the greens fee as the numerous hills definitely slow a lot of walkers down. Would come back for a budget Stanford experience as long as the tee time is early enough. read more

This is strictly for the driving range I don't know what's changed recently but I have been going to this as my practice range for last 1.5 years. Lately they are always running out of balls and or randomly closing the range with no warning. It has happened twice this week. On Monday I used my range card and got maybe 8 balls out of 110 for the large bucket. Got a ticket from the pro shop to try the second machine. Zero balls came out. They gave me a voucher great. Now today (Friday 9/8) I get to range at 9:30 am. There are buckets over both machines indicating they have no balls. There are a dozen other golfers milling about confused. No one is picking up balls on the range. I go to pro shop and they have no idea the ball machines are closed or when more will be available. I spend 30 mins on the putting green and nothing changes so I left. I understand balls run out but having no one available to pick them up and the pro shop being clue less to what's going on. This never used to happen so maybe they are short staffed? read more

I've been playing here for over 10 years. The course is maintained very poorly, during winter it's pretty much unplayable. The pace of play is abysmal, usually takes 5 hours during the day. The Marshall's don't do anything to press people to keep the pace. There are lots of areas on the course that are damaged and could have been repaired during the summer months. There is very little invested into the course, they routinely have tournaments on weekends taking tee times away from members. Unfortunately there aren't many options for golfers who want to play regularly other than the country clubs. It has so much potential but I feel it's under the wrong management. read more

Played 18 on a Saturday morning at Crystal Springs. It is a lovely course with a TON of elevation and undulations. It's a difficult track offering amazing views. Lots of wildlife and overall a great place to play. I will say the cost was steep compared to some of the other courses in the area with comparable condition. I just played here in January 2025. So my notes below are as of that date. Overall, this is a nice public golf course with great views. It's a pretty good value compared to other full18 hole courses in the area. However, there are some areas that need attention. The first is the driving range. It appears there are a lot of people practicing here which means it gets crowded and it can be hard to find a stall. They really should reserve some stalls for the next tee time up so people playing can warm up. Also, it's a little pricy at $8 for 25 range balls - not to mention the machine only gave me 22 balls. Then, there are no rubber practice tees. There is a place for one in the mat, but unless you brought your own you are hitting everything off the mat. Those things are so so inexpensive, not sure why the pro shop can't keep some around. If there really is an issue with people taking them, then charge a deposit of like $10. iIf someone doesn't bring one back, worst case scenario you turn it into a revenue stream making $10 off a 50 cent practice tee. But generally speaking, there seems to be a complete disconnect between the golf course and its driving range which doesn't provide a great experience. The next major issue is the food options / wait at the turn. So there are no quick food options like easy made sandwiches or hot hotdogs. Everything is made by the restaurant. To be clear - the food there is pretty good but everything is made to order and takes the amount of time you would expect. And there is no system or infrastructure allowing you to order while playing. This leads to a massive cluster at the turn. People take 25 minute breaks to go get food and then just come back down and just start back playing with no regard to the people they are now cutting. We had been behind a slower than average group all day, nothing out of the normal but we were typically waiting at every tee for 5 -10 minutes. Then at the 10th, this group that was 3 groups in front of us come down while we are on the 9th green and just reinserts themselves back in front of us. There is a sign there saying that if you leave the 10th tee you lose your place, but when we pointed that out the other group got somewhat hostile. This could have been helped my having a marshal or just a golf course employee managing the situation there. I think the problem would be easily solved by just stocking quick food items for people to grab, but you should expect a hassle / confrontation at the turn. read more

I received golf vouchers for hosting a wedding reception in 2024 so I decided to try out golfing with a few buddies. We were all new. First, when I called in to schedule tee time, they never provided any instruction that may be valuable for newbies, like this is what you should wear, this is what you can bring(music speaker, snacks, a few beers etc). They never mentioned how many people fit in a cart and how each cart needs their own clubs. Some golf courses have carts that fit 4 so this isn't obvious if you're new to the course. The individual that gave us the keys to the cart was nice but I feel like it'd be more beneficial to have someone welcome you and ask if you're new to golf or if you've been golfing so that the person can provide the necessary information. If you're new to golf, you're not going to be aware of golf etiquette or how you should do a scramble method to go through the holes quicker. Being one of the rare non-white groups, I felt like we were being judged right off the bat and being blamed for tee times being behind even though they started us about 15 mins late. A dude came to us pretty aggressive and gave us a spill that should have been given at the time of us providing the vouchers. Over communicating is better than under communicating. read more

I've never played here before, I had to book 2 weeks in advance for the morning T-time. None member must book early morning @7AM. Anyhow, the rate was great for senior 60+ $35 walking which was a great cardio exercise on this golf course but I and my friend did it. The fairways are slopped on most, some are quite narrow and trees on both sides, so we need to tee off accurately to the correct side for the ball to roll to center of the fairway. The greens are quite small compared to other golf courses and extremely spotty, they don't look good although well maintained. Some greens are quite slopped, hard to putt. I'm bogeyed golfer but 3-4 putts on these greens, next time it would be better I'm sure. The course is not long for white T, but it does seem to play longer because of the hills, many of my friends don't prefer this golf course, but I think it's fine. I'll try it again some day. The pace seemed adequate, most people play fast even with looking for tee-off balls off the fairways in the trees and stuff. It was a little over 4 hours. There are marshals driving around, quite amazing. The sand traps are not very good, the sands lumped together like rocks and don't look very nice, they're brown. May be in the summer it would be better? I wouldn't play the bunkers, just take the ball out and chip in, it's not fair playing the bunkers like these. I would give 5 stars if the greens are greener and the bunker filled with soft sands. Fairways are well maintained and the course is challenging. read more

I was disappointed to see some of the bad reviews about backups and long rounds, but I've played here a few times (pre- and post-covid) and never experienced these issues. I know they've also added new carts recently so I think this may alleviate some of the other complaints about running out of carts this is one of the best-maintained courses I've seen this covid summer. some tee boxes were a little thick but in general, the fairways and greens were in good shape. bunkers, not so much. there were some filled with rocks where we gave each other relief so we didn't chip our wedges or get hit by flying rocks trying to get out. we weren't too far off the pace, the group behind us never caught up, but at one point the marshal did come around and say we were 2 - 3 minutes behind the group in front of us, which is a fair comment and the proper way to assess the pace. it's deceptively hilly and there are some long stretches between green and next tee so if you're walking, be sure you're in good shape. I don't recommend walking this course It's always been one of my go-to courses in the bay area and nice to see they've kept it up well read more

If you enjoy golf, do NOT play this course. Just played today and it's in terrible condition. I can't believe they are charging people to play there. We have had multiple days of sunny weather but many areas on the course are swamps. It was cart path only, the greens had been aerated and sanded. But the aeration is not going to make a difference because many of the greens were just plain missing chunks of green. The fairway rough looked like they have not been mowed in months. We literally couldn't find balls that rolled 5 yards off the fairway...it was ridiculous. On top of the terrible conditions, their "cafe" wasn't open and no one in the pro shop knew if or when it was going to open. Our tee time was 10:00 so it would have been nice to get a cup of coffee...nope. The snack shake at the turn was also not open. So forget about hanging around after our round to have a drink or a bite to eat. Spend your money elsewhere at a real golf course because this place is a joke. read more

First time playing crystal springs today. Was excited and it was a nice day, but I'd never played a 5:45 hour round until today. It was mind blowing really, especially during COVID. They had no carts for people who had reserved them. We had a 3:30 tee time and at 3:00 the starter asked us if we just wanted to go out because we were walking and they had no carts for other people, so we were happy but quickly realized they had just jammed us in the middle of groups and were sending people out 5-6 min apart. There were a bunch of people crowded around who seemed a little upset but we were told to go. We had two foursomes in front us both had 1 cart per person. By the 3rd hole we were waiting to hit every single shot, which seemed crazy to us since we were walking. By the 8th hole all three of our groups were waiting on the tee with another on the green. We saw a Marshall drive by twice, never stopped to say a word to anyone or to tell us they were pushing groups and stay in position when it gets moving, nothing, just driving around in circles out there. Took 2.5 hrs to play the front and then it got bad... On the 11th we had a group on the green, 3 groups on the tee waiting, and a group just finishing on the 10th green. Was pretty funny really was like 11 carts and our party walking all in the same area. Seemed pretty ridiculous with social distancing. Courses have had plenty of time to figure out their procedures during this and I know it's a difficult time, but space out the tee times some, make it safe, and relaxing for people to get out on the course. Maybe you will have the carts for people who want them if you don't have 10 plus carts on one tee box! It's a shame because the course is pretty fun to play and in decent shape, but for almost $50 I don't know if it's really worth it. Maybe try again early morning and see if it is any different. read more

For my #400 review, I dedicate this to my "cuz," who finally tied the knot; after 15 LONG years of dating his high school sweetheart! We all thought this would never happened. After all, they met in high school, lived together for the past 10 years, it would only be fitting to say, "YES I DO!" "Finally," I whispered to my aunt who wanted a girl! Boys run in our family. Everyone keeps "tryin," but no girls in sight! And so the saga continues!!! Sigh! LOL Crystal Springs Golf Course is a beauty! Overlooking the reservoir with luscious greens, a perfect picturesque for a wedding moment! Truly breathtaking!! If and when my time comes to tie the knot, Crystal Springs might be in consideration, and I would definitely want a "Donna Summer" theme of "Bad Girls" with "Frankie Valle" singing, "Beauty School Drop Out"from the movie "Grease!" The wedding planner was fantastic. She had that same walkie-talkie that "JLO" used from the movie "The Wedding Planner," minus the fall in San Francisco with "McConaghey" catching her!! That only happens in the movie, right? The wedding planner was also on point, took everything in control, and then she signaled with her "talkie" machine, and then the music started, then came the pedals of roses that started to paved for the bride to be, to the walk the aisle! The reception was provided by Wedgwood Banquet Center, located up above the golf course. The venue can accommodate up to 300 guests so I was told, but coming from a Filipino heritage, and if you have ever seen the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," then you get the picture that the headcount doubled in size! You see, when you invite Filipinos for two, you get the package deal, "The Whole Family!" The food was delicious, it came piping hot. The prime rib was fantastic, and they even provided several vegetarian dishes. That was sooo cool! The indoor ambience was glamour-amour...with shape of hearts everywhere... with wow centerpieces! Music was a great mix of hip hop, pop and jazz, and during an intermission, a "Tony Orlando" CD... somehow managed itself to play on tune.... and.... "Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree It's been three long years Do you still want me?" :p If you are looking for a venue to host your wedding, this place has got it all. Breathtaking views, great indoor banquet space, and a staff who has everything under control from start to finish! And for my "cuz" should you happen to read this.... I love you BRO! This was one of the more beautiful golf courses Ive been to. Keep in mind that its a bit chilly and windy at this course. I did not play golf, I was just there to photography a tournament that was being held for a company. They were able to put some cute putting games together on the putting green. There were also some vendors with tables set up to display items for sale and give education about certain things. Plenty of space for everyone to mix and mingle. Its a very sprawling location and I was able to drive around on a golf cart photographing the days events. I saw so many deer. There are just deer walking around the greens with balls just rolling past them. I saw a mommy deer with two little babies. It was so cute and exciting. I do like to play golf. My most favorite thing about golf is being out in nature. You will not be disappointed in the view and nature that are all around you. I would say holding a non golf event would be a great idea. Its really a gorgeous golf course. read more

What a beautiful course. Kicked my butt. Definitely not a push over course to me. I would have gave it 5 stars but I got there early to hit the driving range before my round and it was closed. Mechanical issues, however they were quick to accommodate with a complimentary bucket of balls for a later date. Thank you sir whoever you were, great customer service skills. The price with cart at twilight was so far the best rate I've paid anywhere and I was still able to finish all 18 holes just as it was getting dark.
