I inherited a 98 Lexus with 68,892 miles. I took it to a Lexus place in Hermosa to get it check out so I could pass CA smog test. They came back with a list of "problems" totaling $4420.00 in repairs after paying the $120.00 diagnostic fee I picked the car up and took it to C's. The car was in worse driving conditions than when I left it at the Lexus place. The car check engine light was on and the car sputtered and I did not think I would make it home, about 3 miles away. The next morning I sputtered it to C's Auto. Later that day Cal let me know that the Lexus place had not reconnect my spark plug wires. Cal did a thorough check, changed the oil, flushed/replaced fluids, replace filters and some sensors and I passed CA smog all for of about $875.00. When I pick up the car he actually showed me the "problems" the other placed listed and said that I was fine and did not need any of those changes yet. I took 1 star out because they took too long for my oil change and didnt notified me when the car was ready, so I had to just walk there hoping the job was done. I recommend C's. Based on recommendations from local FB community pages I took my 1991 4Runner to C's about two months ago. Not only did Cal repair my vehicle for less than 1/3 the cost the dealer quoted (by cleaning parts rather than replacing them and not doing unnecessary work) but he also fixed a problem at no charge that I did not tell him about. I had complained to other shops ever since I bought the 4Runner in 2009 that it did not have much pickup but none agreed so I assumed that 4Runners must have a poor power to weight ratio. Turns out a cable to the gas pedal stretched so the pedal hit the floor before all available acceleration was used. Now I have a passing gear and more pickup than I thought my old 4Runner had left in her. I definitely recommend C's. Reasonable, honest, and knowledgeable. read more

I have been meaning to rate this business for months, since I found them on Yelp with multiple five star reviews. My former mechanic (Precision Auto Repair, that is now under new ownership, formally a great shop) that was only a few blocks from my house screwed up when they changed my mother's upper radiator hose on her 2008 Explorer and put it on backwards, where the fan blade eventually cut the hose and spewed coolant all over the engine, prompting her to have to immediately pull over and call AAA. The engine could've blown up for this major error. We had the car towed to Cal who immediately found the problem and was horrified that a shop would make such a stupid mistake. He worked hard at cleaning all the coolant off the engine which was a total mess. I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee that the check engine light has been on for months but the car has been running OK. I know how to repair simple things on cars so I ran the codes and it came up with an error with the evaporation system. Since the car needed a smog test next month, I knew this had to be fixed otherwise it would fail. I took the car over to C's yesterday and told him about the code so he immediately knew where to start looking for the problem. He found a leaking gas cap and a cracked hose, did not charge me for diagnostics, even added a quart of oil for me and took the Jeep to be smogged, where it passed! Cal made sure the engine light did not come back on after the repairs to make sure the car would not fail the smog, otherwise I would have been forced by the DMV to smog it every year. I took my 2014 Shelby GT500 Mustang over today to drop off the DMV paperwork for the smog and Cal put air in the Shelby's tires for me, since the car is not driven much and the tires were very low. I can't say enough good things about this shop, the total bill for my Jeep including the smog test was only $130! Cal is so concerned and efficient that he made sure the car would pass before he took it to be smogged, which was so great since I am disabled so it saved me another trip to get the test done. The shop is about 6 miles from my house but I would gladly drive longer in order to get honest, quality service in a timely manner and very reasonable prices. I can't say enough good things about Cal and his team, they are my new go to shop for repairs. read more

I went to Cal after picking my Highlander Hybrid up at the dealer when they suggested a bunch of work. A couple of the big ticket suspension items were suggested and Cal was able to fix them for about half the price of the local dealer. He was efficient, used genuine Toyota parts (and suggested doing so for this particular repair), explained everything in great detail, and was really a nice guy. I knew it wasn't anything gravely serious because my car would be at a dead stop. I was worried regardless because with car's, one loose part now can turn into a tsunami of issues later. I went to the Mazda dealership because I own a 2007 3i Sport. They ran diagnostics and mocked up a list of over 10 things I needed to fix. Lets just say the cost well exceded a college students budget. I walked out in disbelief. I continued my search for affordable, reliable service. I went to firestone and they went at the situation in the exact same fashion: quickly and inattentively. They followed to tell me something else has gone wrong with the transmission fluid...etc. Frustrated I began to call people I know for help. My friend at the time also had car issues a week earlier. She went to C's Auto Repair and loved it. She said it was like going to an old school repair shop. Where they genuinely care about your well being past your wallet and car. I used to take my Toyota to the Toyota dealership in Manhattan Beach but after being quoted a fortune for work they said I needed, I decided to take my car to C's to get a second opinion before shelling out a bunch of money to the dealership for "repairs". Not only did Cal look it over, and found NOTHING to be wrong, he didn't even charge me because he said there was no work to be done and the car looked good. Any other place would have charged me "labor" to keep the car over night, and raised and to thoroughly look it over, but not here!! Seemed like a logical choice, good reviews in Yelp and walking distance from my home. The work I had done was a timing belt and a few ancillary items, such as new spark plugs. The work itself I cannot fault, I've had no problems. My gripe is in the bill. I may have been a little too trusting and did not insist on a written estimate, but relied, in good faith, on Cal's verbal estimate. Communication was lacking, unfortunately, about what exactly was done and the bill was a surprise, being about 30% over my expectations. Regarding the spark plugs - although the car had 100,000 on the clock the platinum spark plugs looked as good as new - I had seen them out about 6 months earlier. I had no problems starting the car or misfires during running. Cal had told me he would check them and let me know. But instead he changed them without further communication and could not produce the old plugs when I picked up the car, but was quite happy to show me the old timing belt, pulleys, oil seals and other bits and pieces he'd replaced sitting in a bin near the car. Was this experience partially my fault? Possibly, if you believe that a lack of assertiveness on my part and this outcome is the natural order of things. read more

It's so great to have found a reliable, local garage for working on my cars. Conscientious and thorough, Cal checks everything before providing clear information about what he's learned along with a fair estimate. He breaks it down by parts and hours and then does the work quickly and efficiently. Final costs lined up right to the estimates which I thought were fair. And, when the job is done, without needing a prompt, he shows you all of the parts, provides a little education about the work and shows exactly what he did in the engine compartment. I've got a BMW and a Honda Pilot and he works on both. Knows the special in-and-outs of the German cars and when it's worth it to buy the German part and when you don't need to. He's also quick to offer cheaper solutions if you're working on a tight budget, but seems to take pride in doing things the correct way if you have the money for the parts. Very happy with the service I got here. I had ran my front tire against a curb, lost a hubcap, and had damaged my wheel. Needed the car checked for serious damage and wanted to get my wheel and hubcap fixed. I called them up, the front desk was very helpful and let me know I could bring the car in for an inspection. I met Cal on the way in and he looked at my car right away. He was straight up and let me know the damage probably wasn't too bad and that he could clean up the current wheel, balance it, get a new hubcap, rotate the better wheels up front, and then re-align them. He called me after a more thorough inspection, gave me a quote, and finished the job before the end of the day. It was quick, honest, and hassle free. Definitely recommend. read more
