I'm a sucker for Cuban food, but for those of us who eat it a lot there are different kinds. There's the more fancy stuff you get at the Columbia, and then there's the more homey stuff you get at Cuban Breezes. It's not that one is "better" than the other, just different and still Cuban. Cuban Breezes is a relatively informal lunch and dinner spot in a strip mall. You will not impress your out of town guests by bringing them here. Unless they like Cuban food! :) They have all sorts of fried appetizers, from empanadas to ham croquettes and stuffed potato balls with beef. Yes, you read that right. And their specialty is Yucca Fritters, deep fried yucca balls with seasoning (a little spicy) and Havana Sauce (formerly known as Gordos Sauce because the place used to be called Gordos). They have all sorts of sandwiches and traditional Cuban entrees, like roast pork and picadillo. Some interesting things to try are the Grouper Cuban Sandwich, the Pan con Croqueta (a ham croquette sandwich) and the Frita Cubana (think slider but with spicy beef). The fried pork chunks are delicious! Interestingly enough I am not a fan of their black beans. Not sure what it is with their recipe, but it doesn't do it for me. Their arroz moro, on the other hand, is fabulous. It's red beans and rice cooked together. It's a bit messy but delicious. They also have a fantastic arroz con pollo (chicken with rice). Don't forget to order the maduros (sweet fried plantains)! This restaurant is most definitely NOT on the approved Weight Watchers list. After a long week of client meetings and paperwork, I was ready to get out of the house and let someone else do the cooking. I had heard about a Cuban family-style restaurant in NW Hillsborough County, and that sounded just perfect. Cuban Breezes is located along Hillsborough Avenue, just before the intersection with Race Track Road - right before Hillsborough Avenue changes names to Tampa Road and continues on into Pinellas County. Cuban Breezes is located in a strip mall across the street from Cracker Barrel restaurant. In that same shopping center you'll find the Round Up which is Tampa Bay's premiere country nightclub including bikini bull-riding competition and free line-dancing lessons. There's also an Irish restaurant / bar called Peggy O'Neils which looks interesting. Cuban Breezes is not the fancy, white tablecloth approach to Cuban food that you'll find at the Columbia in Ybor City, nor is it one of the heavily ethnic eateries that you'll find along Armenia or in Ybor City. Instead, this is Cuban comfort food served in a family-owned restaurant by a bunch of VERY nice people. There's a large bar area, along with booths and tables throughout the dining room. The decorations are filled with Cuban pride, and reminiscent of what you'd see in a Cuba family's home. TVs are all around the restaurant tuned to sports and news. The menu has the usual appetizers, soups, salads, pressed sandwiches, grilled & fried sandwiches, platters, sides and desserts that you'd expect to see coming out of a Cuban homestyle kitchen. Very basic, very delicious, and very large portions for a fair price. They have a lot of blackboard specials as well. For my dinner I had a cup of Cuban Bean Soup which was a delicious combination of collard greens, potato cubes, Chorizo sausage, and beans in a spicy chicken broth. I also ordered the Vaca Frita platter which was shredded, seasoned skirt steak grilled and topped with sauteed onions, and served with yellow rice, black beans, and fried plantains. A very fantastic meal for under $20. This is a nice lunch or dinner option for people living in Oldsmar, Town & Country, and Westchase. Ehm... sometimes you get just what you pay for, and that's ok. The speed at which it came out meant that everything was pre-prepared... fine if you know what you are getting. The caldo gallego was pretty good, if a bit salty, but that's normal for restaurant soups. It did taste homemade and I'd rate that the best of the two items I got on the menu. They do have a low carb option which was great-- I usually don't want all the sides, so I got the vaca frita (7.99 for a huge portion) and a side of white rice for .99. This is the best place in Tampa to grab fast, excellent Cuban food. This is actually on my top five restauarants to eat at anywhere and I always make sure to stop here when I'm in the Tampa area. Since I'm only in Florida once or twice a year, I order a lot and eat way too much, but I always walk away feeling like I got my money's worth. There is a picture here on yelp of a cross section of the papas rellanas. You can see the abundance of flavorful beef filling surrounded by just the right amount of fried, crunchy potato. I know of some Cuban joints that are stingy with their meat filling. Speaking of meat filing, the empanadas are stuffed to the max as well of yummy meat goodness! The chorizo and cheese is my favorite. Although it is my favorite, I still get a chicken empanada as well as a beef one. The outer shell is soft in the middle, but crunchy on the edges. Any of the apps are delicious and the prices are so cheap for such good food, that you could order one of everything or opt for getting the sampler and the ordering the Cuban bread as well because that is so soft, warm and carby delicious! I've ordered and tasted almost everything on the main menu. It's all excellent, but of I had to make a recommendation, my favorites are the Piccadillo and the pan con pollo frito which basically translates to "fried chicken with bread" as well as the pollo empanizado, a seasoned, boneless, breaded filet. They claim on the menu that it's the best fried chicken you'll ever taste and they'd almost be right or darn close! Tostones are salty and crispy and go fast, so order an extra side of those. Don't judge a book by it's cover. It's on the corner of a shopping plaza. When you pull up, you might think, "Really? This place is supposed to have amazing Cuban food? " But don't walk away! You'd be missing out! The interior is plain with a cheesy wanna be grass hut looking bar. It's clean and there are tvs over head. Service has always been fast and friendly. I'd actually prefer getting my food to go so I can take my time and savor the flavor! And I can order as much as I want without looking like the little piggy I really am! read more

I live not too far from here, yet I've never visited Cuban Breezes. I had a restaurant.com voucher to use and decided today would be a good day for take out. I arrived around 1pm and the place was packed. Their Cuban sandwich was large but lacking in flavor. There was no Swiss cheese, but white american instead...what?! The pork was roasted, but lacked any real flavor. I also got a cup of Spanish bean soup and this was actually really good. It had bits of chorizo in the soup, which was a nice touch. Would I be back? We also ordered an combo appetizer. The sandwich was literally packaged turkey on Cuban bread with shredded lettuce and mayo. No mustard, no pickles, no cheese and not pressed- the sandwiches at Publix are better. The grilled skirt steak was pot roast. There was no skirt to it and it never saw a grill. It pulled apart like pot roast and tasted like pot roast. The appetizer was average at best. The service was great, but the food was not good.
