The frosting is good. The cupcakes themselves, not so much. I've been here a few times and while the cupcakes weren't bad, they were not nearly as moist as they should have been. They tended to be dry. If a business is devoted SOLELY to one thing, they'd better be able to do that one thing really really well. Cupcake royale doesn't. Yummy coffee, yummy hot chocolate and yummy cake pops! The barista was quick with making my coffee and super friendly. My coffee wasn't bitter or acidic and was super smooth and creamy, which is what I want in a latte. The atmosphere is nice too! read more

Cupcake Royale is probably the biggest name in the cupcake game, in a town that takes their cupcakes seriously. Too bad they're not also the best.. Don't get me wrong. They're good enough to get my money now and then, because they make some interesting flavors. Others make moister, more substantial cupcakes. They serve Stumptown coffee, so it's not bad, it's just there are better baristas in this town. They have wifi, but you have to register with them to use it, which I find annoying. I visited from Portland this past weekend, this place is cuuuuute. I love the interior (and the exterior, for that matter)... I really only needed some morning coffee as a pick me up. We saw that they sold Stumptown on their sign so we migrated to that. Now that I see how tasty their cupcakes looked I wish I would have picked one up to have later in the day... but there will be more occasions for that I'm sure. Yummy cupcakes! My boyfriend always gets the salted caramel and it is soooo good. I get whatever chocolate cupcake they have that day. Always good! The staff is always really friendly and will explain all of the flavors to you. Make sure you go the day you want to eat the cupcakes, they have to be eaten the day you buy them. The best ice cream I've had in awhile. We bought the coconut sorbet and shared it with vegan chocolate cupcake. I felt it should have maybe been in the "day old" bin they had, as it was pretty dry. The ice cream really impressed me though, and it's too bad they can't scoop it out and sample bc I would have loved to try the other flavors. Another great thing about this place is being able to take my puppy inside. Being new to Seattle, it's great to take advantage of businesses that are pet friendly. read more

I went here on the chocolate tour and the mini cupcakes we had on the tour were great! The chocolate cupcake was also vegan so if you're looking for that, this is a good place to go. I didn't purchase anything here after the tour because of the price, which is also part of the star rating - the prices seem ridiculous for a bakery. It is Seattle, though, and near Pike Place...the cupcakes are delicious if you're willing to pay the price! read more

When I make it back to West Seattle, I'm going back for another vegan chocolate cupcake! It was moist but not gooey and the frosting wasn't overly sweet. The bread was just right. The glass of soy milk with it: excellent. If I was up there, I'd beg for more vegan options. =) read more

I think maybe I should have come earlier in the day. There was a limited selection when I arrived, maybe 5 or 6 flavors. I got the Tiramisu, and a Lemon Drop for my husband. I couldn't tell if the cake was dry, or dense, or light, or what. The frosting was nice and light, but I can't put my finger on the cake. I love cupcake royale, just not this location. They never seem to have any gluten free cupcakes when I go so I've started just going to the queen Anne location. In the past when I went to this location the cupcakes (at least the gluten free ones) were always very dry with barely any frosting. I mean come on the frosting is the best part!! Hands down, best cupcake I've ever eaten. I've never cared much for cupcakes, because they all seem to be the same.. light, fluffy, and not much substance! These, however, were absolutely heavenly. I bought the dozen cupcakes Groupon special a couple weeks back and came in to pick up my pre-ordered cupcakes for our Christmas party on the 23rd. The guy who helped me was friendly and efficient, and the cupcakes were ready and packaged just how I'd asked. Even though the store was busy (apparently many people had the same Cupcake Groupon for Christmas idea!) I was in and out in a flash, and my Stumptown Americano really hit the spot. So the first time I visited Cupcake Royale in the Junction was on a Tuesday at 9pm (because they close at 9:30pm). I had a gift certificate for a dozen cupcakes but there were only 3 cupcakes left for that day, so the worker gave them to me, free of cost! They were amazing!! I had the classic vanilla white cupcake with chocolate frosting and it was to die for! Although the cake was a little dry, it was so flavorful and the frosting was so rich and just...yum!! Compared to other cupcakes around Seattle, whether as its own chain or for sale at other cafes, I always come back to Cupcake Royale as the best. I recently tried a different local cupcake place and the frosting was so intensely sweet -- I could taste sugar granules. Back to CR -- I love the inventive flavors and their commitment to sourcing ingredients locally and seasonally. But, I consistently go back to the vanilla coconut bunny... Unfortunately, I have to agree about the poor coffee service (which accounts for the four stars.) There's really no nice way to say it. Coffee service here just sucks, it's terrible and the people who work here don't seem to care about how much it sucks (it's almost as if sucking were part of their job). No standards for drip -- it never seems fresh. The only espresso I've had from them has been acrid. I used to occasionally drop in for their coffee and wifi, but with so many available alternatives I don't think I'll be back. I'm not a big consumer of cupcakes, but I've had CR cupcakes on a few occasions and found them to be 'just okay'. They really push the whole 'sustainable' marketing angle but quality is what matters most when you're actually eating them . . . and quality is not really their thing here. read more

Last stop on our cupcake tour of Seattle. It was such a bummer to end on a lame note. I don't understand how this place is so prevalent. They use the same white cake for the majority of their cakes which isn't that great to begin with. You can tell that these are mass produced. The flavors and the artistry of cupcakes is lost. The only good cupcake we enjoyed was the strawberry because of the frosting, it was bright and a true scent of strawberry. This place was only okay at best. read more

These cupcakes were so disappointing. After hearing rave reviews about the salted caramel chocolate cupcakes I was really looking forward to them. They did NOT live up to the hype. The cake was overcooked, flavorless and dry, to the point that the top was literally hard, and the frosting was overly salted. We also tried the chocolate cherry cupcake, which was mediocre at best. Every time I walk into Cupcake Royale, the welcome & service I receive makes it rather difficult to walk out again. When I first moved to West Seattle I tried their coffee & instantly thought it the best, but realized I hadn't sampled enough others to know for sure. A couple months later, I was back at my initial opinion that they have the best tasting coffee in the Junction- perfect potency & flavor. All I add is cream, typically. I've only met one cupcake I wasn't crazy about the cream cheese frosting combo, but the rest I could write a romance novel about. The tiramisu, any of the strawberry flavors, and the carrot cake are my favorites. Specifically, I want to praise the care & quality they put into serving the best for their customers: Many times the manager Lee has told me to taste my drink & tell him if it was perfect before he let me leave the counter, ever ready to do what it takes to ensure customer satisfaction, yet always prompt in doing so, so he could help the next person. Even on a particularly busy day, I was very impressed to see him treat a customer, who very obviously couldn't tip & couldn't seem to make up his mind, with the exact same patience, respect, & care he does each person he serves. Whether its through being extraordinary in their normal routine, or doing something special to sweeten a bad day, each time I'm there, they brighten my day, making me a very happy regular. :) read more

My husband surprised me with a six pack, of cupcakes that is, opening the box they looked delicious, trying my first one wasn't the case. The cake part seemed extremely dense. Not like cake should be and it was very dry. I coulden't even finish it. The frosting seems okay, not filmy like the grocery store varieties. They are well presented and have some cool flavors but because they are so dry and dense I will be letting my husband know not to surprise me with those again. read more

Vegan cupcakes are the best!!! I just wish they would have more, as it's hit or miss if they will have any past 5pm.

I'm not generally a cupcake lover, however I was told to try Cupcake Royal as they are the "best in town"! (Specifically the white cake with pink frosting). I was quite pleased and didn't find them to be dry at all, (as I've been reading in some of the other reviews) but instead, quite moist and delicious. I would especially recommend the carrot cake with white frosting.... very yummy! read more
