This place looks like it could tell some tales. I think there were 5 tables inside, and a row of stools along the bar. I had a burger and fries, and it was great. My buddy had chicken fried steak and onion rings. It was a great joy to sit at the bar and watch them hand-batter the onions before they went into the fryer. I came through Waco on a Monday about 11:30 AM. I found Cupp's off Yelp and decided to try it. It's a very small place and it was busy. I managed to snag a stool at the counter. I heard they have outdoor seating, but it was raining and I was ok with my stool. My order took a long time to prepare. Probably because there was a large to-go order ahead of me. My burger was pretty basic. The meat patties are not hand formed. They come out of a white cardboard box. They're pretty thin too. The bun was huge. I ended up eating the meat and leaving most of the bun. The fresh cut fries saved this experience. They were golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside. A little salt would have been welcome. The soft drinks come in a can - a personal pet peeve of mine. Seems like 12 oz is never quite enough. The staff was nice enough, but busy. My burger was just ok. The fries are lifting this review to 4 stars. Otherwise it'd be a 3 for sure. read more

This is the best hamburger in the whole McLennan county area hands-down. But you better go before 2 o'clock or you won't get one. This restaurant has been around forever. One of those amazing places that makes you feel like your Burgers being prepared by a top-notch chef not just some burger Slinger. There's so many variations on the burgers that someone that is a true Chef would he be able to put together and such combinations that they're amazing. Greasy, filling, no frills. The chicken fried steak will rock your world and put you to sleep on your couch when you get home. Wash it all down with a hometown Dr. Pepper and you're good. My dad and I often ran errands when I was younger, after he picked me up from school. Sometimes they were fun, but sometimes I was exhausted and just wanted to go directly home. The first day he brought me to Cupp's was one of the latter. I remember being so tired (You know, those long days in elementary school...) and hungry when Dad pulled into a parking spot on the street. I wasn't sure where we were nor what we were doing. When I asked my dad what we were doing, all he would tell me was "We're going to Cupp's." A teeny tiny old building on a pretty ordinary street hid some of the most delicious food in Waco. They make their burgers thin and crispy, the way they ought to be. Their fries were hot and delicious. Cupp's became a place that I immediately associated with my dad, and the special occasions that happened on very ordinary days. I had big hopes for this place based on the look and feel of the joint. As on old hole in the wall joint you expect some of the best burgers around but this wasn't the case. We ordered two cheeseburgers and onion rings. I will do the onion rings first. Although they had a nice even breading on them there was absolutely no flavor in them at all. It was like eating fried flour and onion. Nothing... The burgers were a huge disappointment and I knew they were going to be the moment he put the meat on the grill. While they use fresh hamburger meat and not a frozen patty I would have preferred the latter. It had ZERO seasoning on it. Not even so much as some salt and pepper which is all you usually need. But the worst part of it was watching him cook the burgers. He took his spatula and constantly mashed and mashed the meat until it was cooked. All I could do was watch all that flavor being mashed out of the burger. Any burger cook/chef worth any weight in the kitchen knows you never mash your product. My expectations at this point were realized when I took my first bite out of the burger. It was very dry and tasteless. This place has great feel but needs to go back to the drawing board on the burger part. There was a game down the street at Baylor and this place should have been packed. Took some out of town clients to Cupps for breakfast and it did not disappoint! We each had the breakfast special that came out exactly how we ordered- even with my quirky order- extra crunchy hash browns with onion, well done scrambled eggs etc... it wasn't the fastest order to table experience of my life but wasn't considered slow either. Wanted to set the record straight...this establishment DOES now in fact accept more than just cash. I found that out today, and was quite pleased with the revelation. While it was endearing that the restaurant hadn't updated itself in years, it was somewhat annoying to have to make sure you had some cash on you before you left home. No longer! I love Cupp's. Their burgers are able to compete with the best of 'em, but if you're looking for healthy, look somewhere else. They cook with grease and make no attempts at hiding it. If you're looking for good, old-fashioned, griddle-made meal, Cupp's is your place. Like I said, I really enjoy their burgers. Not a huge fan of the steak sandwich, since it's hamburger steak, not steak steak. It's still tasty, just a bit too light for my tastes. The fries are great and fresh, and they come out of the fryer bland (which I like, because you can control how much salt you put on them yourself). I've never tried their breakfast, but the menu looks appetizing. If you've got a group larger than three or four, look elsewhere. Wow! Have read a lot about Cupp's recently and decide that since I have never explored Waco, a possible great cheeseburger would be a motivator. I was not disappointed. My girlfriend both ordered the single patty cheeseburger basket/fries. Cupp's is in a small building that has lots of charm, a few booths, and a handful of counter seats. We sat at the seat in front of the grill top as to see all the delicious action. No uppity frills here, just a great juicy burger with the wonderful touch of the buns being toasted next ti the patties. The fries were OK, but the burger was out of sight! Toasted bun with the right size patty, along with fresh lettuce, onion, pickles, and gooey American cheese. The staff was very accommodating and made to check with us to answer questions and see if we were alright. There is also room out back in case the diner was full, which it was when we left. Looking forward to returning, and will try the onion rings next time as they looked amazing coming out of the fryer! read more
