I came here for the first time after seeing their booth at a Pearl At Kalauao event in Aiea. there was a sign that said home of the original Naanwich. I tried the Chicken Marsala (which was like a yummy curry) Naanwich sandwich for $20. They had kids taking orders and collecting money with their school shirts on who did a great job! With the adults making the food. The chicken Naanwich was really good, a little messy but so flavorful. I'd recommend eating it right away since they are freshly made and the Naan will get soggy if you wait too long to eat it. I think next time i'll try a separate rice, Naan and chicken plate. Can't say enough about CGH! Discovered this gem at the Kailua Market today and fell in love and now, I'll have to make regular trips out to Waipahu for the Kottu Rotti. I'm all for supporting local, and I've seen them around at the local food truck /night market events for some time now - figured today was a good day to support a new business and try them out. My wallet and gut say... think HARD again next time. Southeast Asian food is subjective to begin with based off an individual's preference on spice/boldness of flavor; my personal favorite on island is Spice Up and New Kamana kitchen, and this place was unfortunately no where near their level. Large portions, sure... but I struggled to eat even a 1/4 of my plate and opted to not bring the rest home. Ordered a combo plate with Chicken Marsala / ulu curry with rice (for $22) - the Chicken Marsala tastes like it was a few days old, super oily, and very little flavor (quite the opposite you'd expect from SE cuisine). Think boiled chicken with an oil "dressing." The ulu curry (which sounds amazing to try)... was all hype, coconut milk and nothing else. The rice. Yikes. Mushy/clumpy/"been sitting under a heat warmer for hours" rice, would still be better than what they served. Sadly, this review could've been for their food alone, but alas, I give them 1 star purely for their shady business practices. $22 for a combo meal (2 mains - chicken Marsala, ulu curry and large portions of rice) - hard pill to swallow but it's still "reasonable" for what it was. however... $10 for side order of naan!?!?! Shame on me for not asking prices at a food truck that didn't list prices... but shame on them thinking 3 pieces of naan justifies $10. The cherry on top - if u pay by card, they discreetly charge you an additional 4.5%. Why? Unclear. But why not, if business practices are already stretched. My dumb self thought I was supporting local and wanted to also tip to help... I've learned my hard lesson as I write this on the toilet, less than 1.5 hrs after eating. I love Indian food so this was a treat. They offer two meat and two vegetarian naanwich options. We spilt one of the Masala Chicken Naanwiches. The sandwich was about $17 (9/24). Everything is made fresh so there was about a 15 minute wait. The hot sandwich is huge with lots of naan and easily sharable. The shredded chicken was spicy and flavorful. We loved it. Each and every "authoritative" statement made by Westerners who claim they have traveled to Sri Lanka. Thinner than Indian curries. No coconut milk. Mild chili heat you taste but not feel. Very pronounced cinnamon taste (I pulled two cinnamon sticks from the curry) with strong flavors of star anise, cloves, cardamom, turmeric and a plethora of other background spices. All three alone, taste great, mix them all up and it's even better. Turmeric rice, a good base with its hint of fruity notes. Flame grilled garlic butter naan, delish. Limited review because by the time I placed my order, they were sold out of the garlic naan bread and could only offer the meatball curry without meatballs (the bottom of the curry barrel). They did offer to put in the no meatball curry (with a lot of potatoes only) with turmeric rice and veggie curry for $10. We've come to this place twice now during Pearl Country Night Markets. Hard to come by Sri Lankan food in Hawaii, so I'm glad they have relocated here. Family who runs the business together. The first time we got the meatball curry with rice/naan and it was delicious! Love the unique flavors. Would recommend this dish. Second time, we got the special that was the Ulu breadfruit curry ($16). It was a very small portion than I was expecting. Just some pieces of Ulu with little curry sauce. It was too strong on coconut, very overpowering flavor. The curry to rice/naan ratio was off. I had a lot of leftover rice and naan since I didn't have much curry. Was not very filling sadly. Maybe because it was the end of the night and how busy they were, but I definitely didn't have the same experience as the first time. I decided to try something new at What The Truck in Waikele this week, and I am so glad I did! The food smelled so good I had to try it, and landed on ordering the turmeric rice with chicken masala. There was only one person working the booth, but I got my food super fast! I didn't catch his name, but he was the kindest guy and really just made my night. I brought the food home and mixed it all up in a bowl, because the curry sauce makes it really stand out. It was so yummy, and my only regret is that I didn't get naan bread to finish it off with! Never had sri lankan curry before! I've had both their meatball curry and vegetarian curry. I really like the meatball curry, esp with their sambol!! Also the first time I've ever had sambol. First time trying Sri Lankan food and my husband and I were very impressed. It was served nice and hot (literally could see the steam), good portions, and was very tasty. We absolutely loved the coconut sambol! Didn't get a chance to try the garlic naan because my son devoured it and was asking for more. The owner was really nice too. Definitely will be going back.
