We were in town for a ride on the train and heard this was THE PLACE to go. Being from the Detroit area I'm a HUGE fan of coneys. These are not those. My wife's family is from Rochester, NY and they make a "hot sauce" which seemed similar to this. To me it tasted like watered down ground beef/"hot sauce", lacking the spices I'm used to. The hot dogs didn't seem to be anything special. The fries were crispy and delicious while the vanilla coke was apparently the highlight of the meal. If you enjoy hot dogs or have picky kids, this would be a good spot for you. read more

What a disappointment!! When we first walked in, we noticed that the lights weren't even turned on (clue #1). They have no wait staff so you order and pay at the counter. When it's ready, you have to pick up the food at one counter and drinks at a different counter. If you want ketchup or salt and pepper, again you have to pick it up (clue #2). The hot dog sauce is definitely not the same, our fries were overcooked, and the buns were mushy because they were wrapped in waxed paper before being put into a paper bag to hand us (clue #3). We weren't sure what we were supposed to do with our trash but someone behind the counter told us to put it in a plastic tote that was sitting on the bar. This place has certainly gone way down hill. I was in Cumberland for work a few days ago, and I was walking back to my car to get back on the road to Baltimore, I saw Curtis'. I saw the words "weiners" and "since 1918" and promptly crossed the street and walked in. When you walk in for the first time, it's immediately clear that most people who walk in have been in before (10 or 100 times) and so have a regular order off their small menu. It was my first time, so I got a bit of an explanation and got a single wiener the way they serve it - with "sauce" (meat chili), brown mustard, and white onion. It was delicious. I could have eaten a couple more. They will mix it up for you if this combo of chili, mustard, and onion isn't for you. (They may have had some other items on the menu too, but I didn't consider them, so didn't notice!) On their drink list, I noticed buttermilk. The only person I've ever known to drink buttermilk was my paternal grandmother who was from rural Illinois, and I so I asked if they really still serve it. They do, and Gino (more on him later) brought me a little taste for nostalgia's sake. The space is larger than it appears from outside and full of character and history - all the walls covered with newspaper articles and photographs. Lastly, the service. Gino is the current owner - Curtis' is third-generation family-owned, and he is definitely a big part of what makes Curtis' special. He's warm and welcoming and funny and will definitely tell you the story of Curtis' if you're interested. They're cash only, so remember to bring cash with you. Curtis' is just one of those special places that seem like they're doing things the same way they were done 50-100 years ago. They're old school in the best way. A meal at Curtis' is like a journey into the past (including their prices, which are incredibly affordable and accessible for anyone who might stop in). I'm so happy I saw the building and thought "yeah, I should get a snack before I get back on the road." This is probably the most notable hot dog place in Maryland, and rightfully so. The dogs are reasonably priced as well as the combo meals. The place does not take cash, so be sure to have some on you. Service was great as the owner was very helpful in pointing me in the right direction by choosing the coney dog. Its basically a hot dog with meat sauce (which they make). I pretty much gobbled through those things! As far as the place, yes it does look sorta trashy in the inside as there was so much boxes and old stuff piled up everywhere. But they do have a decent sitting area. read more

Absolutely fantastic experience. Walked in and was immediately greeted with a big hello and guided as to what they do. As Gino put it, " we do hot dogs with special sauce, mustard, and onions. Unbelievably delicious food at dirt cheap prices. I am from Anne Arundel county, where Ann's dairy cream foot longs are national famous. While these are normal size hot dogs, they pack just as much flavor and equal the best hot dogs I've ever eaten. Whenever you are in the area stop by and pick up a hot dog, you won't be disappointed. A friend from home has raved about Curtis' so, being a hot dog guy, I had to stop while I was in Cumberland. I went in 2018 and they were celebrating their 100th year of operation. Anything that goes that long has to be pretty good. The interior is dark wood and lit by glowing yellow bulbs. The menu is posted behind the counter but you probably won't need it. The tough question is just how many dogs you want. The standard way they are served is with their famous chili sauce and onions. The person I was with ordered light onions and I'm glad I did too. They really pile them on. The buns are soft, the dogs are good, and the chili has great flavor. No need to get fries, just get more dogs. The other highlight is the vanilla Coke. They make their own vanilla syrup in house and that stuff is awesome. Treat yourself to some vanilla Coke! I had the pleasure of meeting Gino, the owner. He's the third generation owner and a great guy. If you're passing through Cumberland, you really should stop at this hot dog joint, it's an institution. read more

First thing, they do not take plastic only cash. I had enough in my wallet. The hot dogs were reasonably priced and I was just passing through Cumberland on a drizzling Saturday morning. The main restaurant was closed, and you ordered through a window. They have a hut like place with space heaters a door away. I ordered three hot dogs with crinkle fries and a soda. We stopped thru Cumberland from Ohio to VA and came up on this place to hit something other than the usual chains. Gino was awesome even though we showed a few mins before closing. I popped in tonight on a whim as I was driving by on the highway and learning the spot is 103 years old when I was greeted at the little window was an awesome fun fact. Love this place! Gino is the nicest guy I ever met. While I was waiting for my order today, an older gentleman walks by and had a question for Gino. "Where did the leather shop move to?" Without missing a beat, Gino knew exactly where it had moved and even offered to call them up for him. He followed up with a question, asking what the man needed from the shop? When he replied "a bifold wallet" Gino disappeared into the storeroom and emerged 15 seconds later with a brand new leather bifold, no charge, no questions asked. Every time I come to Cumberland to visit family I stop and get a dog here. This place is amazing! I love the look and feel, it's totally throwback and true to what it was like when it originally opened. My order is the same thing every time - two dogs "with" (the special sauce), French fries, and a chocolate Ricky. Aside from the awesome hot dogs the service is great. Not sure why this place doesn't have more reviews. My family (parents & grandparents) have been coming here for longer than I've been alive and I'm over 50 at this point. The dogs are amazing - always have been, taste the freaking exact same as they did when I was a kid and fell in love with them. The service is awesome and super fast and comes with free jokes. Totally worth the two-hour drive to get them. I see some reviews where people aren't happy with the amount of food they're being served. They have always been small portions but they aren't very expensive. Always been that way. I'm not a big person and I can put away four dogs, and seriously, it doesn't cost very much. read more

I'm from Chicago. I take my dogs seriously. With that being said I don't expect to get a proper Chicago dog outside of Chicago. The food here was ok. Nothing special. Dogs were just ok. Fries were frozen crinkle fries. They weren't bad, but any decent dog joint should have fresh cut. So basically these dogs were ok, but not special. If I'm back in town I'll get another two. Our motorcycle group, "The Between-the-Sheetz Gang" go to Curtis' Famous Weiners at least twice a year (riding from the Frederick, MD, area). We take great country roads to get there and back. While there, Gino the owner enthusiastically greets us with open arms, offers to have one of his employees take our picture with him, and treats us like kings. Perfect place for a quick, low priced meal. Take out only, cash only, sidewalk dining at some umbrella tables. Don't expect any frills here but you don't need any. They only offer 4 toppings on your dog or cheeseburger: brown mustard, ketchup, raw onions or their own meat sauce, which is really like a finely chopped ground beef, not very saucy at all. They recommend you do the mustard, onions and sauce and let me tell you, that combo is really good... you need to try it! We got hotdogs, and a small fry to split. The sauce on the Hot Dogs tasted very salty. The 13 fries were ok, at least they were crisp! While on the return portion of our family vacation, we decided to get out of the family truckster for some hot dogs at Curtis' in Cumberland. Great decision! Here's why: (1) Good hot dogs. They're small. The sauce is good. They're tasty. If you want some kind of gourmet weiner fashioned from Kobe beef and served with an Asian-fusion sauce inspired, in part, by the chef's childhood summers in Nairobi, you are at the wrong place. If you want some crazy-ass old-fashioned hot diggity hot dogs, you're golden. (2) Cheap. I pinch pennies harder than those hand-crank souvenir machines and Curtis' passes inspection. (3) Fun place. The surrounding old downtown neighborhood is cool (although it is capable of baffling your phone's navigation system a little). The restaurant itself crosses into time machine territory. It's got that "lived in, ate in, slept in--all for a long freaking time" vibe about it. Character. (4) Awesome staff. The head hot dog guy in charge was insanely nice. He offered to snap a family portrait outside of the restaurant for us and patiently took multiple photos due to a (potentially intentionally) blinking 5 year old. He was a heckuva nice guy and seemed to actually give a hoot whether or not we were having a good experience even though he knew we were unlikely to ever wander from Kansas to Maryland on a lark to buy a few dogs again.
