Ugh...so hard to go to a get your car worked on by someone to feel they aren't doing what they agreed to do. That's what happens to me every time I go to the dealership to get my annual change and checkup. They offer great lift services to and from home so you can drop your car off. The service helper Reese was awesome and Guy the manager was kind. Problem is I took the car here and when they gave it back to me I checked all my fluids before I left. So glad I did thanks to my Uncle that always has me check So yep my wiper fluid was empty, coolant almost gone and the brake fluid was low. I would of left without looking and could of overheated my car (I think cause I don't actually understand which fluid is for what). Sad that every time I come here I have to go through this and the one in Wahpauhi isn't better. Make sure you check before you ride off with you car. read more

I was in the market for a compact SUV but didn't want to pay the premium for a Toyota RAV4 nor deal with Honda CR-V engine oil dilution issues so I decided to check out a Mazda CX-5. Sales representative Stan Nakano greeted me when I pulled into the dealership and I explained that I had seen some remaining 2020's on their website and that I wanted to take a look at one. Unfortunately all were at the Waipahu location so he showed me an identical 2021 model. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he let me take the car out to test drive by myself so it was definitely a no-pressure experience.  I was pleasantly surprised by how well the car handled the rough roads of downtown Honolulu and after I returned to the dealership, I got a quote for a CX5 Grand Touring. Went home and decided the following day that I wanted to drive that specific 2020 model. Stan picked it up from Waipahu and drove it to the Ala Moana location for me. 8/29/20 Well as much as I hate to give Cutter business considering how vocal I have been before about what poor business practices and the often unprofessional demeanor of some of the staff, I don't want to be that person who only reviews when things go bad. I have said before, Greg in Service is exceptional. As far as car buying, generally the experience for me hasn't been great but they are the only Mazda dealer so as I said in the Cutter Volvo review, if you want the Mazda product really no choice but to give Cutter the business. So as prideful as I can be and as much as I may want to make a point and not give Cutter the business, i'm not so prideful that in this economy I will pass up a decent deal! So, why did I go to Cutter again? Well my son wanted another Mazda. I pushed for Honda and actually had already reached out to Tony Honda to discuss what I was looking for and set an appointment. Because the finance part of this will come from me, I of course listened to my sons wants, but in the end he knew the ultimate decision was mine. So while waiting on the contact from Tony Group, a close friend of mine who knew the situation reached out to the manager of Cutter Mazda in Honolulu, Matt Wong. Matt wasn't working today but fairly quickly had someone call me. About half hour after the call I got a call from Nick who was on duty at the dealership. I have to say Nick's demeanor and approach were professional and he simply listened to what i was trying to accomplish with a CX5. A few calls took place, he found a car that could work and he worked the deal. The deal was more than fair and met our needs, signifying he really did listen and take into account what I wanted. I went up a little more on the down to cover the significant negative on the trade, but this was something I somewhat anticipated. Next call was from Matt Shiraki for finance. Again, another professional encounter and informative on additional products offered without being pushy. Next up was Claire who delivered the CX5 to my residence in Makakilo and took the trade. She was great with getting all the signatures and organizing all the paperwork. This process started at about 1:30 and the car was delivered at about 6:30, never had to go into the dealership. This experience I have to say was a good one. Their process during the pandemic was pretty streamlined. Like i mentioned before I have given Cutter a lot of business in 5 years, this being the 11th car from them for my family and this time I felt they somewhat appreciated me as a customer and the business I have given them. So for this experience today, I will say thank you to all involved. It would be great if there was consistency with Cutter and this is how every car buying experience will go; however, from past experience i'm not so sure. But I will say this to Cutter, what you all did today, make that your pattern and practice and theres your consistency. I had been considering upgrading my Mazda3 to something larger to accommodate my growing family, so on a whim, I stopped by Cutter Mazda just to take a look. I was interested in the CX-5, and had been enamored with it for years. I didn't intend on leaving with a new vehicle, but was looking forward to maybe test-driving one. Upon pulling into the parking area, we were greeted by Stan, who enthusiastically showed us several pre-owned CX-5s. He did a great job explaining the features, as well as the difference between the three trim levels. We went over the financials, and he was actually able to help me leave with a BRAND NEW CX-5, while giving me a great deal on my trade-in. If you're looking for a new SUV, I would highly recommend the CX-5 over the Nissan Rogue (which I used to own), Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4. Two updates. After a surprising positive experience, I realized today I'm in a love hate relationship with Cutter. Sometimes they surprise me, other times I'm left frustrated and disappointed. Hence the new 1 start review. Scheduled an appointment online yesterday. Took my car in on-time and was told they couldn't find my appointment, even though I had an email confirmation. They say I could wait, so I do. 41 minutes in, I receive an email with my Service Summary. Great! Except when I ask, they say my car isn't ready yet. Wait a bit longer, ask a few more times. Finally after 2 hours and 10 minutes into my "appointment", I decide to leave. They say they'll have it done in 30 minutes! Complete waste of time. I'd take my car somewhere else but prepaid the maintenance on my lease. Never doing that again and now changing where I lease my next car from (incidentally, the Miata I purchased from them service elsewhere has been awesome). Update 9/14/20 I took my car in two weeks ago to take a look at a flat that I had "fixed" with a fix-a-flat. They took care of it within a hour (quicker than Costco). Greg was really communicative - a VM (I was at work) followed by a quick text, which I appreciated. Took my car in the following the week for a safety check. Didn't know that safety checks are free if you've purchased the vehicle from there; might seem small given the cost of a new car, but it's a value add for me - the convenience that I can drop-off my car, have a ride to work, and pick up when I'm pau. They deleted my account for my car. So i had to make a new one. Do not trust them and double check their work. Especially if you're not a local. These people are racist and their business would die immediately on the mainland. The only reason they are open is because they have a monopoly on the island and no competition. I would like to give zero or negative but not possible. DO NOT waste your time with them. I went on Friday, Feb 18 and they add almost $8,000 dealer markup on top of the MSRP of $31,505 for a CX-5 Carbon Edition. Their website said as low as $31,505 but the starting price is a few dollars shy of $38,000. Absolutely refused to lower the price at all, hiding behind the chip shortage and a bunch of other junk. I have no issue with the service department. I have had positive interactions with the service department. I own a 2016 CX-5 and thought we would get another one to replace our 16 year old van. Alas, was not to be since they are price gauging. If I am going to pay that kind of money I would get a true luxury car (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Saab etc.) I love my CX-5 but they are no where near close to being a luxury car. Be careful allowing them to make copies of your driver's license. I understand they will need it before taking the vehicle for a road test but we weren't there yet and never got to that point. I asked what they were going to do with the copy of my license (unbeknownst to me they made more than one) and they said keep it on file for a couple weeks then shred it. I said no and demanded they give me the copy. Only after leaving I discovered they made two copies. There is absolutely no need for them to keep the copy of your driver's license if you don't purchase a vehicle. Make sure you get any copies back from them. Protect yourself. We left the dealership to regroup after suffering what surmounted to sticker shock. The dealership called me Saturday morning and I truly felt like I was called a liar. I told them I was on their website and quoted the as low as price and Dana said "you must not have been on our website I can send you the correct link." Wow talk about ballsy, I felt like she called me a liar. The only way they could have received my email is if I was on their website because the email does directly to the dealership's website you are on at the time. I refused to be baited into a back and forth. I said I am at an appointment I need to go, I will try and call back when I am available. I had no intention of calling back and never called because we purchased a RAV4. This is closer to being luxury than the CX-5. The dealership keeps calling wanting us to come back. They are fishing in barren waters. I ended up at Toyota and got a great deal with everything I wanted for far less than the price for the CX-5. I can't speak for the sales department since I did not buy my Mazda from them, and this review is for the service department only. Unless, you really like or want to have a Mazda, I suggest finding other auto brands because Cutter Mazda is the only one Mazda franchise dealership on Oahu. In my opinion, the problem with this dealer is that there are no other Mazda dealership to try to "win" your patronage or go to the extra mile when performing customer service since the Cutter brand is the only dealership on Oahu that sells Mazda. Therefore, you have no choice, if you buy a new Mazda, any warranty work will be performed in this dealership. I have a few noticeable rattle noises in my 2017 Mazda 6 (5k miles approx.); however, each time I bring it in to be diagnosed, the service department will brush it off, and their reasoning was that the car was still working according to the manufacturer's specifications. They did test drive it, and the dreaded reasoning was always the same - Could not be replicated at this time. In the end, I found the rattle by myself, and it was from the driver seat. I went on and padded the seat base myself and now, the rattle is gone. On another time, I brought in my car one day as I heard a constant rotational noise coming from the tires when driving and Cutter Mazda recommended in changing the front brake pads and rotors. I declined the service as it was too expensive. However, after going to Lex Brodie for a free inspection, it was clear that the noise came from the two rear tires because those rear tires were freely rotated in front of me by hand up in the jack stand and the same sound could be produced. This showed that Cutter Mazda used the elimination method or they just want to trick customers (who does not know much about cars) into paying for such services that they actually did not need. I am sure my situation will be different if there are other competing dealership on Oahu as Cutter Mazda will fight for your patronage and service. Luckily for me, I have moved from Oahu; hence, I can write this review. Please remember that buying a car is only the beginning, and it is also the shortest process of owning a car. You will spend more time with the service department as you own the car for years to come. Take that fact into consideration before purchasing a Mazda from Cutter. Mazda: My wife and I purchased a new CX-5 a few weeks ago. Now that we have been driving it around, here's what I've found... quiet interior, nice lines on exterior, great gas mileage. Our first car with Bluetooth Connectivity and rearview camera, gotta get used to this. Driving/handling is very quick and responsive. Plus it's a Top Safety Pick of the Insurance Industry's IIHS. COOL! Kyllie, Kyllie, Kyllie ... what can I say? Well, she is definitely as asset to the Cutter Mazda Team. She really knows her stuff. Short version: I had a terrible experience and will never buy a car from any Cutter ever. This is the kind of place that gives all car salesmen a bad name. If your heart is set on a Mazda here's my advice: they will have a dealer markup, lots of high margin expensive add-ons (paint sealant, etc), and various warranties (wheel and tire?!?). Don't haggle with them, it's a waste of your time. Just cut out all the markups/add-ons, give them the number you're willing to pay right off the bat, and stick to it. If they're not willing to do it, then leave. They'll probably call you later and tell you that they, *gasp* actually CAN do that deal! Even better, do this over email to save yourself a headache. They DO NOT care about wasting your time. Long version: Our visit actually started out ok. We were looking at the Mazda 3 and the salesman went over EVERY feature, which was time consuming but I appreciated the effort. We went for a nice long test drive. Here's where things went downhill. When we got back from the test drive the salesman asked if we wanted to see some numbers. We were looking at a base Mazda 3, which has an msrp of around $25k. The first number they came back with was $40k out the door. Excuse me?! They had a $3.5k (15% of msrp) dealer mark up, $1.5k paint and interior sealant, window vin etching, plus a bunch of warranties to bump it up that high. They use all the high margin add-ons to get the most money out of your pocket and into theirs. Like $1.5k for "paint and interior sealant"? I'm not paying that much for you to essentially wax my car and spray the inside with scotch-bright. THEN they started with the high pressure sales tactics, not wanting you to leave, not wanting you to think about anything. Just shoving the pen in your face and asking you to sign. Each time I said I was going to go eat lunch (we'd been there for hours at this point and I was getting hungry) the salesman would be like "just let me try 1 more time" and would walk into another room for a while before coming back with a slightly lower price. We did this a few times before the manager came out and things went from bad to worse. His tone was very condescending and he acted like I was wasting his time. If you're trying to sell cars, that's not a good approach. He gave me a line about how they "can't make money selling cars for msrp" and tried to make me feel guilty for suggesting that it's justified by telling me "I know you don't care but we gotta keep the lights on". First of all, that's a whole load of hogwash. Second, I wasn't trying to low ball them, I was only asking if they would sell for msrp, not under. When I was unwilling to pay over msrp he said "OH, so you guys aren't here to buy. You're just here to get numbers so you can show them to someone else." Um. Cutter owns the only Mazda dealers on the island, so I'm not sure who he thinks I'm "showing these numbers to"? After leaving, the salesman called me and said they'd sell me the car for msrp. The experience I had at Mazda was really horrible. It sucks when you really love a company but the service side just doesn't stand up to the expectations you think a highly recommended dealership would be held to. My experience only has to deal with the service (mechanical) side. I scheduled an appointment the following week to go get my car diagnosed a 1994 Mazda Miata when I came and checked in the car my name was second on the list. Which means my car should've gotten diagnosed second in line. So my car was in at 8:15 around and I was scheduled for an 8:30. Initially I dropped it off ended up walking around and waiting couple hours passed by and nothing has been done to it it is 2 o clock. I get tired of walking around ala moana beach park and decided to go call to see how my diagnoses was going. The service manager answered and said my car had not been touched and I will be the next car in but when I go to the back there are all these cars on the lift except mine, my car is still being held on the side untouched. Remember I dropped it off at 8:30 and now it is 2:00 by now just for a diagnoses. I ended up sitting in the waiting room seeing if anyone will approach me everyone was getting there finished while mine was being thrown to the side. anyways I waited the whole day walking around ala moana wasting my day off (I work 6 days) to get nothing done. At around 4:30 the service manager says they need to hold the car over night till tomorrow?? For a diagnosis?? Seems like they just didn't touch it at all he tells me they were diagnosing it and a misfiring code came up. So the next day comes around and well I finally get a call back around 10 he says they can't diagnose it because they can't plug it in because it is obd1 which they are obviously oblivious too. Also how did he know it was a misfiring code if he had not figured out a way to diagnose sounds like smoke being blowed into my ass to me. This will be one of the places that I check off my list to not come back to. I love mazda I own two cars the Mazda 3 and the Mazda Miata but I will definetely never be going back to mazda (Honolulu) to get my car serviced. I recommend if you have an obd1 do not take your car in you're just going to be thrown on the side and have your only day off wasted. -5/5 Side comment on the picture: My miata sitting on the side after he told me i would be next in line this is at 2:30-3 and I dropped the car off at 8. What a great buying experience! My hubby needed a car and I immediately thought of Cutter Mazda. I have bought multiple cars from this dealership and I knew they would take care of us. We looked around online and kept coming back to the Mazda 3 hatchback. It's sporty and has a spacious interior. We stopped into the dealership about a month ago and Jose helped us out. He was friendly and attentive. He really listened to our needs and made a huge effort to help us find a car that fit our budget and situation. The dealership has moved the location across the street a number of years back and it was my first time in the newer showroom. It was clean and well set up with the new cars, comfy couch and big screen TV. We had to wait a bit to get our situation sorted out with finances and we were finally ready to pull the trigger so we contacted Jose and let him know it was time to find us a car and make a deal. As with the first time we met, Jose was friendly, caring and went the extra mile to help find us a car. We went on a few test drives and found the right car for us. We purchased a 2015 mazda6 a few years ago, we came to Cutter Mazda to trade our 2015 for a used Mazda CX-5 and ended up walking away with a brand new one. Yosuke and the whole team was fast with answering many questions, running back and forth with paper work and making sure we got into the best vehicle that fit us. I also have to give a huge shout out for the team being very helpful while staying 2 hours past business hours and not giving up with our search! Yosuke was so helpful with finding us an amazing, safe, AWD family vehicle for when we go back to Pennsylvania. They were amazing with COVID guidelines, and keeping 6ft distance while giving us GREAT customer service. We thank the whole Mazda team for going above and beyond for us. My experience is with sales and inventory management only and has nothing to do with service. For over a month I have visited and expressed interest in a new CX-5 signature or grand touring reserve trim in either black or blue. I asked numerous times about specific color and trim and told them I had a month before needing to buy (since quantities are limited in those top two trims). I did not want to special order it since I was told vehicles come in all the time and one was bound to meet my requirements, plus 60-days is outside of my window to buy. My problem was not with follow up, as the sales rep did touch base often, my problem is with follow through as no one could tell me any sort of method of tracking models/colors/trims or even vins of what is moving or "in transit/coming soon" as many other car dealerships have. I was told about a gun metal gray model which was at least close to what I wanted, but it had over 100 miles on it. I figured if they had some means of tracking or better predicting inventory, they should also be able to inform potential buyers. Instead, a ton of time and test drives were wasted on a vehicle I was all but sold on already. Out of time and patience now, I'm set to take my business elsewhere, someplace where they can track, predict and communicate inventory to the customer and meet their needs. I understand all purchases have trade offs here and there, but instead of trying to get me what I asked for it seemed they wanted me to take what they wanted me to have. Honestly, this would get a 1-star, but Cutter's saving grace was a decent interaction with our initial sales consultant. My friend and I arrived at the dealership roughly around 1030am, and did not leave until around 1pm, quite upset to add. But more on that later. When we arrived, Avery quickly greeted us as we drove toward the entrance of their main building and was with us throughout majority of our time there. We were interested solely on the 2019 CX-5 (GTR/Signature) and made it clear we had zero intention of purchasing and wanted to simply test drive to educate ourselves. Avery was happy to oblige and brought forth the trim we wanted to test drive, as well as other trims to compare. He allowed us to get a pretty good feel of the car during the test drive and understandably, was very enthusiastic about the product. He was very informative and for the most part, personable. He offered to 'run numbers', which was fine. We made it clear again that there would be no purchasing to be had and while he was able to get numbers fairly close to what we were happy with, this is where our decent experience took a turn for the worse. Enter the 'Closer.' John Kim... where do I begin. He comes in and introduces himself as a 'product specialist', which is laughable in hindsight. He came in to talk to us to make sure that Avery did not leave any details out about the CX-5 and tried to understand where we were coming from. I need to preface the following interaction with that my friend is an extremely thorough researcher. I cannot express the amount of research she does going into this and could easily hold lectures presenting the amount of information she gathered. With that being said, John would just not shut up about irrelevant information - I could careless if your dad is some Judoka or that you 'respect' our research, which by the way, he did NOT respect. I literally counted 11 times that my friend told John that there was no way a sale was happening but John, as a 'Closer', was not backing down and very pushy about trying to talk up the Mazda brand. Fine. We gave him the respect to speak his mind, but as a guy who says he's been in the biz for 16 years, he has next to zero comprehension about customer service 101. Lesson number one: DO NOT PISS OFF THE CLIENT. As mentioned, John is a broken record. This isn't our first rodeo buying a car and believe me, for a guy that didn't want to waste our time?, he wasted a good hour of it. The straw that broke the camel's back? Disrespecting my friend, whom he said he respected for her research, by condescendingly question her, "Did you even research?" Sorry, but how stupid do you have to be to look down on a potential client willing to buy your second most expensive model in the company's line up? Additionally, my friend is not confrontational and was nothing but respectful when trying to make it clear of our intentions and not wanting to waste anyone's time. "The car's sell themselves." Wonder why John was so hard-up about trying to get us to buy something if they just sell themselves? Didn't see anyone else on the showroom floor. Really, is common sense lost on people now days? John's unprofessional attitude, while maybe part of his 'job' has all but certainly assured that we will not be returning to buy a vehicle. Unfortunate that he screwed over not only Cutter and Mazda, but also Avery for putting in the time to help us. Cutter, if you honestly care about making money, I highly suggest you take a look internally at your staff and make sure they understand the importance of simple customer respect. No one wants to deal with disrespect. Mazda does not make the best products, but definitely products to consider. There are other vehicles that excel in certain aspects and John made it that much easier to take our business else where. I apologize to Avery (sales consultant), Joe (financial manager), and Chat (general manager?) for giving us a decently respectful experience, only to be ruined by one person.
