I worked in downtown over two years ago and used to frequent this place. Was happy to run some errands near here so decided to drop by and order my favorite Shack Salad with Lamb. I never cared for lamb due to the gamey taste but a friend let me try a piece and it was delicious...no gamey taste! I was hooked! I tried the Donor Wrap with similar ingredients like the salad but wrapped in tortilla. This is really good too! Will order the wrap next time...can't wait! This place is located at the end of Pauahi Street where it meets Fort Street Mall. Also, the portion is tiny for $16 bucks worth of food. I have no idea why I haven't tried this place sooner! The food here is so delicious! You can definitely find that this is a very popular lunch spot because the lines are always long! It's kind of hot inside but all good! They have tables inside as well if you wish to dine in. So far I have tried the big Turk plate, the rice plate, and the Döner wrap! The big Turk plate has a little bit of everything! I love me my falafels and hummus and this plate has that plus the rice plate portion! It is a nice big plate for all the people who would like bigger portion meal. The rice plate that I tried is with chicken and falafel. It's not on the menu but I asked and they delivered!! Wow, a coworker recommended this place for lunch a couple weeks ago and I've been here 3 times since. Lol. Although the lines get long sometimes, they are super fast. Whenever I'm in the downtown area I always stop by doner shack! My job had some catering done by them and the food was so good! Always love grabbing their lamb and the pita is so soft. The hot sauce is definitely what makes their food so addictive! It has the right amount of heat to make you keep wanting more! I was surprised to find that the normally crunchy romaine salad that is put inside the wrap was replaced with what could only be described as wilted soggy leafy greens. I heard of this gem about 4 years ago from someone that went to HPU. I'm so glad this place is still here and they've renovated. It's a much more pleasant and clean atmosphere. The workers are ever so friendly too. I like this place because not only are they're menu items affordable but ever so tasty. They're Mediterranean salad is good on its own. When I think of lamb I think of gamey meat... it's not the case for this plate. It was a mixture of lamb and beef I really couldn't tell between the two. They've done some renovations and are now much more spacious. Two tables (spread out for social distancing) for dine in. Friendly staff, well lit, and ready for takeout orders! Your meat options are either beef/lamb mix or chicken. The meat is piled on yellow rice and served with some greens and dressing already poured on. Not going to lie, I was skeptical of trying this place out because of the bad press it was getting from the news. However, my coworkers order from here a lot and my friend recommended it. I'm so glad I tried it, their food is delicious. I tried the lamb and chicken rice plate. The lamb was soft and chicken was juicy. Also, their spicy sauce to add on, is bomb! It made the plate come together. Service was nice and friendly! The only thing I noticed between past reviews and now, the plate looks smaller and price increased. Been coming here for quite some time and secretly been wishing others would not find out about Doner Shack! But the jig is up judging by the long lines and happy faces of regular patrons who come for the delicious Mediterranean plates, wraps, salads and hot sauce! On my latest visit, was pleasantly surprised to see the restaurant expanded next door and has more staff... which translates to faster orders being made. The food is still amazing ... my favorite being the shack salad with chicken. A mound of romaine greens topped with the signature flavorful chicken, cucumber chunks, pitted Greek olives, pungent feta and a yogurt dressing. Top it with the vinaigrette and hot sauce, and you're talking lip smacking (with a slight burn) deeelicious! My dining companions equally love the wraps and rice plate with lamb. We joked that we come in with one thing in mind but can't help salivating over the menu options, and keep changing our mind several times before we finally order. Doner Shack is like the friend you've had for a long time who over time you've learned you don't really have that much in common, but you still really like them despite some differences in beliefs, etc. so you keep them around and vow to never discuss public health, politics or religion because at the end of the day they make a really good apple pie.... Analogies aside, given the fact that the owners of Doner Shack are not bigots like the owners of the Chick-fil-a, I honestly don't care that much about where their thoughts and beliefs are as long as they continuously put out a good product, and that they do... I've had Doner Shack bookmarked for several years, but due to their location I never made it down here until my office relocated from Kakaako to the downtown area. Now with them in walking distance, I've tried the Downtown Wrap, Shack Salad (added lamb), the Doner Pita Plate and the Doner Rice Plate. My favorites are the Downtown Wrap which features your choice of meats, salad, hummus and feta in a wrap as well as the Shack Salad, always with lamb and double meat (don't sleep on the double meat, it's a game changer when it comes to staying full until dinner). Sometimes depending on what I order, I'll also add pita/hummus and a soda for a nominal price. When offered hot sauce or green sauce, don't sleep on either, but my favorite is the green cilantro sauce which does not cause my mouth to catch fire. Food is prepared to order and even during the busy lunch rush, you'll only be there for about 15 minutes or so. Service is friendly and most importantly food is really delicious. If you're a big eater, the Doner Pita Plate or the Doner Rice Plate is probably your best bet since I can never finish it (even without double meat). Great place to get your Mediterranean food fix at lunch time. They've been around for a few years and recently expanded their eating area to double the previous size which is very nice. Their previous space was very small so it's really not saying too much. I really like their salad and always get it with lamb for a very reasonable price. My wife also likes it so munch I've gone downtown and hunted for parking so I can get her one for lunch. Also suggest if you don't like yogurt cream sauce, tell them no need. The salad dressing already comes on the side. Daughter lIkes the wrap and like us, gets it with lamb. ordered via doordash since my car is in the shop. estimated time was 40-50 min and it took 40m from placing the order to when my dasher arrived got the shack salad, with all the meats, and added a pita. i had requested the sauce & dressing to be on the side, but the sauce was drizzled on top. it ended up being ok though since it wasnt a whole mess of sauce. meat was well seasoned and very tasty. gyro meat was a little dry, but i guess thats better than it being super oily. lots of chopped up romaine, cucumber, onions, and tomatoes. a few kalamata olives in one corner, and in the opposite corner a small scoop of very fine feta crumbles. dressing tasted like an italian dressing. while it was also good, i didnt use it since the meat had so much flavor and there was enough tzakiki on top. pita was $3 for 1 piece, and it was nothing to take note of. one side was soft, while the other side and the edges were super hard and dry. definitely did not satisfy my craving, as i had wanted a warm pillowy soft pita. overall the salad was really good though. i would definitely get it again read more

When u are the only Döner in town !!! This place was a hit for me as I crave middle eastern and Arabic food which is so difficult to find in Hawai'i. The place was packed and pumped out plate after plate in a timely fashion. Biggest down fall for me was there is absolutely no parking. So best to drop off someone to pick up and then go around the block. If u are walking around feel free to have a seat inside the seating area is quite small but I think accommodating. Or u can take it to go and eat at one of the near by benches or parks. Not in the nicest place downtown but it works. My only complaint is the food was bit to salty for me and the menu a little confusing the way it is written out. But definitely will be back !! I love Mediterranean food, kebabs, and all things covered in tzaziki! Doner Shack is a nice little place downtown that quick fixes my need for something different than a typical plate lunch. I'm giving my review for now three stars. I ordered online, and while my food came quickly, there were some issues. First, some of the rice in my order was hard. Second, I ordered a side of pita bread and didn't get it. And third, I ordered an extra sauce and didn't get it. Normally I would be more harsh in my review with all these mishaps, but I've been to the physical location a few times and I've never had any order problems, so it's more of a 5 star if you order at the location, 3 if you order takeout delivery. I haven't worked in downtown for several years but when I do journey to downtown, I make sure I grab a bite from Doner Shack. I remember walking here often to pick up lunch with my coworkers to take back to the office. Back then they only had limited counter seating. We'd wait in a long line to pick up food in the narrow shop that was usually a 2 man show. But now, Doner Shack has expanded their shop, they have a spacious seating area that is well lit and modern, and have hired more staff. They even accept credit card! Awesome food, low prices, big portions, amazing staff. That about sums it up. This place is legit. Food is authentic. I've lived in the UK where there's a kebab place on every block. The cashier was very friendly. It was a Saturday so they had extra avocado and falafel that was going to go to waste so they just gave to us for free.
