I didn't know what to expect. Doner Shack in located near Fort Street Mall by Chinatown. The employee who was at the register is the sweetest tutu lady!! She's what made the place nice and inviting. I got the small Downtown Doner wrap with chicken and feta and hummus. I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the taste alot and it was fresh. Chicken was dry but I would get it again. There's seating indoors and the tables and seats were clean. I was happy about that. I wish there were photos of food in the restaurant so I knew what to get. So...a co-worker of mine ordered from Doordash and I didn't really know what to really consider. In the end though, I opted for the Cali Wrap (no cheese), and sure enough, it was so good. It was almost like eating a Mediterranean California Burrito...and very filling. Wow...I can't say I've had anything like this before, and I loved it. Nice work, Doner Shack. I've been to Doner Shack several times, to all of their locations, and it never misses. I came here during lunch, and I got the Spartan Plate, it is a LOT of food. I feel like a regular rice or pita plate would suffice for most. However, the Spartan Plate, in my opinion, has everything you need (I heavily recommend, if you cant finish it, take it home and heat it up, it is just as good). They have seating inside and outside of the establishment, but I've only done take out here. Their service is decently fast and some of the workers are very friendly, some of my coworkers seem to know them. After waiting for like 10ish minutes it is ready. I HEAVILY recommend getting their sauces and even requesting for more. I love spicy and saucy food so I like to drown the meats and rice in the sauce. read more

Came here with some co-workers. It was my first time. Line to order moved quickly and order came out within 10 min. The lady taking my order was super friendly and kind. The meal it self was good. The chicken was cooked well, juicy, and flavorful. The green sauce gave it a nice flavor. I enjoyed the salad on the side - very fresh and crunchy. The rice was just okay for me. Some parts were clumpy and some were super dry. I just mixed it with the sauce and chicken and it made it better. Only downside is I had a small shrimp tail (?) or something plasticky in my chicken. Very minor and I just spit it on the side. Overall, I would try again - probably a wrap or something else. read more

The first time we had doner shack it was so good. The sauces were in the wrap as were the extra sauces we requested. It was flavorful and a hit. The second time we had it they put absolutely no sauce in the wrap or the plate but did give our extra sauces that we had to pay for. The point of paying for extra sauce is to have..extra? To make matters worse I kept getting bits of bone in my chicken shawarma. I have never had this happen at another place that sells chicken shawarma. Like maybe one or two pieces but this was like every other bite! Can you imagine having to spit out bone from a wrap? It's not pleasant. Whoever is shredding the chicken needs to do a better job. While it's good, the inconsistency makes me question getting this again. read more

Shortly after returning back from my trip overseas, I decided to run errands in downtown. Top on the list was to return my passport and place it in the safe deposit box with my Suica card. I parked in the municipal parking lot and passed by Döner Shack (DS) heading to my bank. I've passed by DS 100's of times, in addition to working on Bishop St for several years and never set foot into this restaurant. DS has been around for over 10yrs as they started off with a cart offering Mediterranean food and then expanded by moving into a retail space where they are currently are. I've been eating primarily Japanese food for 2 weeks and needed a change so the aromas from DS got my attention where I stepped foot after running my errands and heading back to my car. My timing was good as it was before the lunch crowd so I was immediately waited on upon entry. I wasn't really hungry so I decided on a sandwich. When asked what meat, I didn't know how to reply as I didn't study the menu prior to entering. The female staff informed me of the options and ended up in getting the mixed one. After paying, I waited patiently on the side where you could observe the staff and their assembly line. The sandwiches are made to order but the wait was minimal. I was impressed on how large the sandwich was when the staff passed it to me. I was asked if I wanted hot sauce and cilantros, which I gladly took them as they are served on the side. The drive home is less than 2 mins from downtown and decided to eat my sandwich right away. Indeed the sandwich (wrap) is quite impressive. A generous portion of grilled meats within chopped romaine lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes drizzled with yogurt sauce (tzatziki?) were stuffed inside a tortilla wrap. On my first bite, it was absolutely delicious. I then added some of the read and green sauce that elevated the experience. Loved the freshness of the green sauce and the heat kick from the red sauce. Service was average. It wasn't exceptional nor poor. There are several small tables inside for those who decide to dine in. Overall, a great first experience where I'd be game to return to DS. Food was tasty and my sandwich didn't break the bank. For the amount of food served, DS's sandwich is a great value in my books. read more

This place is so close to my job that I'm upset I never tried them sooner. I ordered the rice plate with chicken and yogurt sauce. I got it delivered through uber eats so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. But wow the flavor of the chicken shocked me. It was sooo good. There's not too many "healthy options" for lunch, and I'm no dietitian but I think Mediterranean food falls in the healthy-ish category. Today I ordered the Doner Rice Plate w/ chicken. I was really excited to try Doner Shack but for now it's 3 stars. I ordered the chicken plate with pitas for $14.25. Unfortunately, the chicken was pretty dry with some burnt or hard parts that I keep needing to spit them out. The whole plate was drizzled with yogurt sauce and lots of lettuce under the chicken. Maybe I have to try something else next time. There were some tables and chairs but it's not a very big place and I know this place does get busy during peak lunch time. read more

Some of us at the office can divorce the politics of a store owner from the goods and services they provide while some cannot. This is why we limit our visits to Doner to those times when those that can't aren't joining us for lunch. Everything I've tried is good but my favorite is the Doner Pita Plate with mixed meat (lamb and beef). It comes with a generous helping of meat, a nice salad, two pieces of pita bread cut into triangles and a container of yogurt dressing. The meat is well seasoned and the salad dressing is tasty. One can use the pita to hold the meat and salad and treat it like slices of pizza or one can copt to treat the pita like pieces of bread. I use them both ways and to sop up the salad dressing. The prices are reasonable, being that it's 2024, and the food is tasty and priced well. It's a "winner" for me. read more

I always order the chicken salad and today was no exception. My co-worker picked up my order since I couldn't eat until later. When I opened the container, to my surprise, all I saw was the chicken. Looks like they r using the mixed greens instead of romaine so with the moisture from the chicken, the greens had all wilted and was soggy. There was no crisp to the greens. 've met the owner before and he's a really nice guy, and the food is always top-notch. My only complaint this time was the staff interaction when I called about their hours-- the blue-haired guy said they were "closing soon," but when I asked what time, it was still about an hour and a half away. When we got there, he also gave a bit of an attitude. I'm hoping he was just having a bad day and that this isn't the norm. I really love this place and I'd hate for a one-off experience like that to take away from how great it usually is. read more

Takeout lunch from downtown Honolulu, Hawaii... I finally figured out where this place was when I walked through Fort Street Mall one day. Doner Shack is on the dead end side of Pauahi Street. Parking might be an obstacle because there's metered street parking on Bethel Street and Pauahi Street. Mark's Garage is nearby. However, I called in my order and picked up quickly... I got the Downtown Doner Wrap which was quite large! I ate half for lunch and half for dinner! A 12 inch tortilla wrap is stuffed with lettuce, cucumber, meat of your choice, feta, and hummus! I selected lamb/beef. It was tender and flavorful! (I didn't need any of the sauces offered to me.) The cucumber added crunch and the soft tortilla didn't fall apart! It was delicious! Love the food here! Tried the Downtown Döner Wrap ($13.50, no tax) with lamb-beef and the Big Turk Plate with lamb-beef ($17, no tax). The lamb-beef meat is yummy soft and delectable. Both choices were delish! Downtown Döner Wrap - The wrap contained romaine lettuce, a nice feta sauce already inside, and a white (creamy) and red (spicy) sauce that I threw into the wrap. Big Turk Plate - The plate contained (saffron?) seasoned rice (deep yellow), hummus, a couple quarters of pita bread (half a round), and falafel, and comes with three sauces, a red spicy sauce, a vinaigrette dressing, and a large white creamy sauce. The hummus is yummy; the falafel has an almost crunchy outside with a softer nicely grainy texture inside. Would have liked more meat in this plate to go with the amount of rice provided. The store has a nice dining area; there is a curious map where patrons have come from all over the world to pin their geographical residence on this Döner Shack map; saw a homeless man come into the entrance to dig through the trash can. The man who cashiers is nice and pleasant. No one bothers you while you are eating. The store is nice and quiet even with other patrons there. In LOVE with the NO TAX! (Did you know that IRS taxes are actually illegal? #BigTruth!). Also, during the so-called (not really a) pandemic, this business owner catered to unvaxxed and vaxxed without discrimination. This is a restaurant is right across Scarlet. It's a spot that my coworkers and I frequent during our work week. This place is generally always super busy during lunch but it's definitely worth the wait. Sometimes we dine in and other days we take out. They have seating indoors (about 7 or 8 tables) and outdoors (two small tables) The aunties preparing the food and the person taking the orders pump out the orders so fast like it's nobody's business! I witnessed a line out the door conquered within minutes lol. I have pretty much tried most of the menu and my absolute favorite is their chicken wrap, which is what i tried today. Everyone else got a chicken rice plate, which is always a safe choice! The meat is so juicy and flavorful. I love the green sauce and hot sauce that comes with every order. I'm no expert on Middle Eastern food, but I know what's delicious. I happened to come across this little place in Chinatown , and thought I'd give it a try. Years ago I had seen the very popular Doner Shack food trucks downtown and on the UH Manoa campus, but didn't want to wait in those long lines. I had heard that this Chinatown location can get pretty busy too, but it looked quiet at the moment. The Doner Wrap ($13) that I ordered was very satisfying and big enough for lunch AND dinner that day. It came with a zingy green cilantro sauce which added a brightness to the tender mix of seasoned meats. I will be back soon for another of their wraps, the Downtown Doner Wrap, which includes hummus and feta. And I will be sure to ask for extra green cilantro sauce on the side. I also love the gyros at Leo's Taverna a few blocks away. Depends on what you're in the mood for that day! read more

I worked in downtown over two years ago and used to frequent this place. Was happy to run some errands near here so decided to drop by and order my favorite Shack Salad with Lamb. I never cared for lamb due to the gamey taste but a friend let me try a piece and it was delicious...no gamey taste! I was hooked! I tried the Donor Wrap with similar ingredients like the salad but wrapped in tortilla. This is really good too! Will order the wrap next time...can't wait! This place is located at the end of Pauahi Street where it meets Fort Street Mall.
