Food was hit and miss for us. The kid's burrito was absolutely delicious--well seasoned, comforting, and honestly better than expected. The marlin tacos, however, were very odd. They came as large, heavily charred chunks of fish with cheese. It didn't feel traditional Mexican at all, and the flavor was inconsistent--some bites worked, others didn't. Da Crack is da bomb! I wanted to play it safe, so I went with the bowls. Less of a mess. I like to be able to wash my hands before I eat food and I didn't find that to be an easy task to accomplish here. I stood in the walk up window line with many other people to place my order. This place is popular! Once the order is placed, now you have to wait to pick up your order at the pick up window. I got the shrimp bowl and the fish bowl. So delicious and so worth the wait. It took a few visits but I'd finally arrived at a conclusion: Mexican fare in Hawaii is sub-par, avoid it. When, on my most recent visit, I discovered the window in the wall that is the entirety of Da Crack, I was intrigued. The reviews were good from yelpers I trust, the steady stream of customers spoke volumes, and the combination of those things caused me to break my own rule. I ate Mexican food again, in Hawaii. But, as they say, past performance doesn't dictate future results. This time I was pleased with the offering. This is the best Mexican fare I've yet sampled in Hawaii. I opted for a carne asada bowl which was positively overflowing with ingredients. There were enough good tastes in the bowl that I was basically able to stop eating by the time I hit the rice (brown or Spanish are the two options); I was full and rice is always the part that interests me the least. The carne asada was different than what I generally favor, as were all the flavors, in general, but the combination of it all was still good. Bottom line? I was pleased. Da Crack is literally a window. All orders are to-go and there's no place to sit nearby. We're visiting from the Bay Area and needed a quick place for takeout for dinner. I really liked how there is an on line order option, super convenient! We went to pick up, and didn't have to wait long at all. There's no seating available so it's def a grab and go situation. I got the carne asada bowl. The flavor was really good but the meat was a little tonight IMO. We have really good Mexican food in the Bay Area so my standards might be a little high. I liked their salsa and pico de gallo a lot! Parking can be alil difficult depending on how busy it is. They do have their own parking lot. A Hole in the wall called "Da crack" with a painting over the window of a dude playing a guitar sitting with his back toward you, and the crack of his butt showing might be a bit off putting and pretty hilarious! Although you may miss this place as you drive by because it literally is a hole in the wall of a little strip mall of sorts you have to look for it. But as that description goes, typically the food found in a "hole in the wall" it is usually very delicious and they did not disappoint! The lady who took our orders was very friendly. I let her know that I was gluten-free which they were able to accommodate. We have the taco bowl or burrito bowl or a "bowl" as it's listed. You first choose burrito, bowl, or tacos, then choose your meat, which is ground beef, chicken, Carne Asada, fish, which happened to be shark today. Then you choose if you want sour cream and cheese, etc., guacamole, then choose Mexican, brown, or regular rice and then what type of beans, black or pinto. Then you choose your sauce, jalapeño mild up to very hot and then pico de gallo. Then you can choose your jarritos drink or the one canned guava drink. You get a size nice portion in a paper bowl covered with foil and it is delicious & seasoned to perfection. So they did not disappoint! Parking is tight to be mindful of those backing out. Drive into a strip mall parking lot. No seating that I can see. Just a takeout window. No lines at lunchtime, but when we drive by at 7pm there was a huge line. Da Crack has been on my list of places to try and finally I have tried it! I went towards to end of the night, an hour before closing. I waited about 20ish minutes to order and another 15 mins for the food. Service is slow so just be prepared. I personally don't mind but this isn't a quick pick up place unless there's no line. I got the shrimp plate. Came in a paper bowl with some foil on top. I brought it back to my hotel to enjoy, which I did enjoy it very much, but I will say it's a bit pricey ($16.95 for shrimp bowl, +$3.49 for guac). Arrived on a Friday afternoon at around 3 pm and there was barely anyone here. Everytime we drove by here though at around 5 or 6 pm, there is a long line of people waiting. We tried the following combination: -Bowl, shrimp, brown Rice, lava, chipotle sour cream, olives -Bowl, chicken, mexican rice, pico de gallo, chipotle sour cream, cabbage, guacamole (it is an extra cost for the guac) The lava was so spicy but mixed well in my dish. Shrimp was not rubbery at all. The husband said the guacamole was a good add as it added more flavor to the dish. Both dishes were flavorful and was not bland at all. We appreciated that each bowl, they placed each side by side vs mix the ingredients together as I liked mine more mixed and he liked mixing it piece by piece as he ate through it. I really wanted a fish taco, but I'm not a fan of Ahi so I ordered a keiki bean and cheese burrito. It was tasty and a nice portion. I don't have a big appetite so it was perfect. I could not even finish it. My wife has a small appetite too and got the kid's meat burrito( carne asada). We live in Socal so she said it was good for the area. I got the bowl with pork, they gave a good portion of meats. However I wasn't a fan of the taste. For me, it tasted like straight up paprika. A bit overseasoned and made the meat taste dry. My bf got the surf & turf burrito. Althought it looks like a good portion of meat/shrimp in the middle... towards the ends it was more rice and beans. Maybe we came on an off day? They have a pretty standard menu: tacos, burritos, taco salad, enchiladas, etc. Service was friendly and helpful in recommending shredded pork for our burrito. The portion was large, and we split the burrito. This restaurant does not have inside seating. It's more of a to-go spot. Probably would be safe to call to order ahead for large orders. Reasonably priced, $12-15 for a burrito. Definitely give this spot a try if you are visiting the south shore of Kauai. read more

I don't write many low score reviews but this one was well earned. I have eaten my share of Mexican food in California and Mexico so the standard is pretty high. We went with the Carne Asada and the Shrimp tacos and neither had much flavor. The sides of black beans and rice were also completely bland. We had the Mexican rice and found it closer to a box rice. The flour tortilla was grocery store quality. The service was great so that was a positive. So many wonderful food options in Poipu but this is definitely not one of them.
