This restaurant has been my family's favorite for years. I've been going here since I was 12 (22 now). It's a hole in the wall type of place, so the service might be more blunt. However, the food makes up for it. I usually get a bowl of pho followed by a fried banana for dessert. They usually flambé the banana in front of you so that's pretty cool. read more

When you walk in, it seems like a run down restaurant. My boss took me here for lunch last week. If I was by myself, I would have never even walk in. This restaurant has been here for years and she was raving about how authentic their food was. We ordered pho, bun thit nuong with a cha gio, and a plate of banh cuon. I was very disappointed that the pho came out first and I had to wait for my food for a good 15 mins after. They should of made my food first then prepare the pho so the food would come out together. My boss was already done eating her pho by the time my bun thit nuong came out. She was right about the authenticity of the place. The food was good!!! No No No...do not waste time or money. The restaurant was dirty, the service was rude at best. Took about an hour to get our lunch. Other tables received theirs AFTER arriving behind us. If I remember correctly from my college dayz, this place was around in the early 90s, judging from other reviews about this place being very close to the San Jose Arena. I might even have eaten here before some shows. Sounds like this place has not changed from the yelp reviews. Mediocre pho, average to sub average cafe sua na (ice milk drip coffee) where the grounds also filter through and end up in the drink (nasty!) I'm going to do my best and not laugh at the restaurant name, but it will be veeeeeeeeeeery hard..... So yeah 3 stars....mostly for the name. Probably not much for the food. I know Phuc is supposed to be pronounced fooook (almost silent k), but what about Dac? Is it pronounced the way it is spelt, or is it more like Duck/Duc? So is it Duck Foook? Duck F**k? Oh man this reminds me of a joke a friend told me in high school and it went like this: A guy from a farm on the advice of his dad to get out and learn more, goes into a seedy part of town and brings a live duck with him. He passes by a hooker and she tells him $50 for some fun. He replies that he doesn't have money, all he has is a duck. She thinks about it and says sure why not and takes him to a motel room. They had a great time. Afterwards she proposed, hey it was great, wanna do it again and I'll give you back your duck? He said sure! And a second time happened, he got his duck back. Then it was getting late. He was waiting for his bus to go home, when his duck escaped his arms and ran into the road. A truck carrying some farm animals couldn't stop in time and collided and killed the duck. The truck driver apologized profusely and said to the man that he would compensate. Went to the back of the truck and there were some ducks there. He offered and gave the man two ducks in return which was accepted. Then the man goes home. It was a cold gloomy day and I was craving some Pho to stay warm. Came here with my coworkers during lunch hours and surprisingly it was really crowded when we arrived at 11:45 AM. I was surprised to see there was only 2 Pho options on the menu. The menu was really limited and I wish they had more noodle soup options like Chicken Pho or Bun Bo Hue. I ordered the #1 Pho Combo and it definitely satisfied my cravings. The noodles were cooked well, there were decent portions of beef, and the soup was pretty delicious with Siracha. Overall I would come here again since it's walking distance from my work. The only complaint I have is the service. The restaurant seems to get really crowded during the lunch time and there are only 2 servers working. It took a while for the server to take our order, let alone give us cups of water. I came here for lunch on a weekday with my cousin and some friends. Surprisingly, it was pretty empty. I ordered pho tai and it came out fairly quick. The noodles they used for pho is different than the traditional noodles, but I didn't mind. There was a good ratio of meat versus noodles, but there was so much broth! The portion here is comparable to other pho places, but definitely way smaller than Pho Kim Long's. They have an atomic hot sauce that will blow your taste buds away! Use sparingly if your spice tolerance is low. They also take credit; I'm not sure if there's an extra fee for that. They let you pay separately here; just make sure you tell the cashier. I did notice that the lady charged me $7.00 when my pho was only $6.25 on the menu. She also over charged the rest of my party. However, I didn't bother complaining as it's a small restaurant and they're probably trying to make ends meet. If I was paying for many dishes however, these pennies would add up and I would've said something. CAUTION: This place has the worst restroom ever. It's tiny and smelly. Do you know what "cotton mouth" is? I may have mentioned what this is prior to this particular review, but I'll elaborate on it again. Cotton mouth is the sensation when your throat dries up from an excessive amount of salt, MSG, or any other artificial flavoring. The feeling lingers for the whole day leaving you dehydrated. Surgeon general's warnings should be given out at Dac Phuc. After digesting any bit of pho or anything ordered here, there is a high chance of contracting cottonmouth. No matter how much water you drink to rehydrate, cottonmouth is a time based sensation, it'll continue until cottonmouth wants to stop. To the review: This was one of my first experiences with pho. For athe time, I actually thought all pho was like this. From the business it still incurs, a lot of people appear to like it here. Since finding some really good pho from places in Oakland and other places in the San Jose region, one has to wonder how lucky they are. Their location is in central downtown feeding off poor and defenseless people craving for pho. Dac Phuc simply monopolizes downtown San Jose. My usual was the combination pho. The broth was ultra salty and I could feel myself sweating MSG after each spoonful of broth. The vermicelli noodles were fine, but the meatballs were seemingly of the frozen variety. My dad has a term for rough low quality meat. He would call them "rubber soles" in our native tongue. Using that to describe the rubbery texture and uncountable times you would have to chew the sucker before it can go down, the pieces of pork here truly are rubber soles. If your pallet can absorb the tortures of food with high dosages of MSG, try Dac Phuc. Service is hit or miss (usually more the miss) and they may assume you'll know your order before you sit down. I'm not saying the pho here is disgusting per se, but the disguise of overusing artificial flavoring can compensate for whatever downsides or lacking of taste in anything. This restaurant is Haunted. Yes. You heard it right. It is haunted by the reputation of the former owner, the PHO-NAZI. When I mention this place to friends, they recount stories of service from hell, of being ignored, of having to go get their own tea, of an owner that thought his food was so fantastic that serving customers was dependent on his mood. This place changed ownership many years ago. Yet the bad reputation persists like the lingering scent of bad body odor. The new owner is the sun to the old owner's moon. She is so personable and friendly she makes me feel like she knows me personally. The last time I was there, my dinner-mate commented on the same thing and I just thought wow that's exactly how I feel (I guess I'm not special after all). It is no surprise that there are such varying opinions on the taste of the Pho here. Dac Phuc specializes in Northern style Pho. Northern pho tends to have a lighter, though sometimes cloudy, broth with a more delicate taste. It uses much less, if any, ingredients like star-anise. In contrast, southern style pho has a stronger taste and often darker broth. So, if you're used to the taste of Southern pho served at Pho 54 or Pho Kim Long then places like Dac Phuc and Pho Ha Noi may seem bland. But, keep your mind and taste buds open and you may find northern-style pho has a unique flavor that is wonderful in its own right. Why let a closed-mind impede a potentially wonderful experience. The PHO-NAZI is long gone though his memory is slow to fade. So walk into Pho Dac Phuc with fresh eyes, an open mind, a voracious appetite and I think you'll walk out with an appreciation for a very unique tasting bowl of Pho. read more

In a nutshell: I will never eat here again. In detail: A friend and I needed a place to eat before heading to a Sharks game. We first went to Tied House. But the place was packed. Then we went to the Old Spaghetti Factory. And that place was packed as well. I never understood why that place is always super packed. The spaghetti there sucks beyond belief...but I digress. So we started walking down Santa Clara Street. I saw Amici's ahead of us, but that place had people spewing out from the entrance waiting to get in. My attention then turned to Dac Phuc across the street. No patrons were in there eating. So I had to make a quick "executive decision." We could go in there and have a quick bite to eat and make it in time for the game...BUT...no one was eating inside, so does that mean the restaurant serves crappy ass food? I gave them the benefit of the doubt, so we went in there. When I opened up the menu, I was surprised at the lack of selection. I looked at the back of the menu hoping that more dishes were listed, but there was just drinks. I looked back inside the menu and thought, "That's it?!?!" I didn't feel like eating pho (that never fills me up when I eat it for dinner), so I ordered one of their FIVE rice plates. Pssh. I ordered the beef and broccoli over rice. I didn't feel adventurous, so I chose that "generic dish." The rice plate...for a lack of better terms...sucked major balls. I think I could've made a better beef and broccoli rice dish...and I don't even cook!! I wound up "cooking" up some top ramen at home after the game because I was starving due to the lack of a fulfilling dinner. And that tasted so much better. I've been going here since I was a little kid, and literally, nothing has changed, except the owner. I'm Vietnamese so obviously I'm picky about my pho, but this place has a really awesome broth! SOOO TASTY! The bowls aren't as big as other pho places I've seen but still very good portions. If you don't want pho, they have what looks like pho that is fried and sauteed with veggies, beef, and a thick sauce. EVERYONE knows about this dish! It's called Pho Ap Chao which literally is translated to pho pan fried. They have another hot sauce here in addition to your tradition red pho hot sauce. It's 10x hotter and THE BEST TASTING HOT SAUCE. mmMMMM!! Gotta have that when I get the pho ap chao. The only downside is the service, especially when it gets busy my mom and I have had to wait a really long time for our food. But, then again, it is an asian place that's cash only, and awesome customer service really isn;t what they aim for. It more like, get in, eat, pay, get moving. Nevertheless, the food is wonderful so I always go back. And, it's not often when the service isn't great, so I really don't mind. read more

A great pho place in downtown SJ. Don't let the decor inside scare you. My co-workers jokingly call this place "sticky-chopsticks". I have eaten here probably 100 times and have NEVER found anything (like lipstick on glasses or dried food particles on utensils) that you often times see at other "higher end" places. Both the beef and chicken pho's are excellent. As the waitress will warn you, beware of their homemade hot sauce. IT IS HOT! You can always add more, but never take away. I often times get the #14 which is crispy fried noodles covered in saucey meat and vegetables. This can also be ordered with tofu instead of meat. Either way, the crunchy noodles slightly softened by the sauce is a great combination. Service here is VERY FAST. It does get crowded at lunch time. The primary lady who takes almost everyone's order is very nice. She does remind me quite a bit of my Chinese mom. Once I ordered a can of Sprite for each of my 8 and 9 year old boys. She didn't think they should be drinking so much soda, so she only brought one for them to share. I guess a lot of people would call this appalling. I laughed it off as typical asian mom. read more

Easily top 3 pho restaurant in San Jose. They serve a Hanoi style pho and you can see that the broth isn't just filled with MSG like you get at your standard 'Chinese' pho restaurant. I'm looking at you Pho Kim Long. The broth is dark, but not from the fish sauce. They use ox-tail which simmers in the broth to give the dark, rich, caramel color. It has an amazing taste which gives you a satisfaction when you take the first sip of broth. They also have their own homemade house chili sauce. It's made in house daily and some other pho places from rumors have tried to steal the recipe. It's a very intensive spicy sauce which will leave your mouth a bit numb. Can't stop me though! They have some other main dishes like Pho Ap Chao and Banh Cuon. Pho Ap Chao is a fried noodle Vietnamese dish with a mushroom sauce and beef. Bang Cuong is the rice cake (kind of like the Korean Rice paper but bigger) dish wrapped in cha lua (pork roll) and mushrooms. It's eaten with a sweet fish sauce. It's a main dish, but my sister and I think of it as the best side dish!! If you guys are searching for the original style of pho come here! read more

What Da Phuc?! Is exactly what I was thinking as my food came out here. My friend **ahem lil Vu** kept raving about the Pho Ap Chao (deep fried pho) here, so me and N went to try it one night. Outside it looks nice, but inside it still looks exactly the same. I ordered the Pho Ap Chao, and N got the normal pho. OMG, my food was so gross. It's like they dumped a jar of gravy over some super stale noodles, and tried to pass it off as a dish. I hate wasting food, but I couldn't finish this, and didn't even want to take it togo to subject my poor dog to this kind of disaster. I've been going to this place for years, and if anything the food has gotten better over time. The lady that usually takes orders is really nice, and remembers your face if you come in regularly. The other wait staff don't really say much. And the guy who you gotta go up to to pay for your meal is really nice and friendly. The bathroom is all the way in the back, and up some rickety stairs. Then down a mysterious hallway which is lit by one flickering light. You start to feel as if you've come to the secret entrance to the Kumite, where Van Damme fights Bolo Yeung in Bloodsport. The vietnamese concert posters are awesome as hell. The Pho here is cool, but its all about that Pho Ap Chao! That is some crsipy, meaty, gooey goodness! We (co-worker and Matt) went to Sunny San Jose to watch Shark's hockey. As procrastinors, we got here really late with only an hour to grab a quick bite. San Jose is the capital for Vietnamese cuisine, and luckily there were so many to choose and we pick this one, which is walking distance to the Hp Pavillion. This small Vietnamese restaurant had a moderate size crowd, with mainly Shark's spectators dining here. We each ordered the popular beef-noodle soup (XL Bowl) for $6.50 and side of eggrolls for $7.00. Our soups came within 5 minutes and our appetizer came shortly after. We loudly slurpped our tasty noodle-soup down quickly and whoofed down our hot and tasty egg-roll. Our Pho and appetizer was good. If not crowded, Matt might come back here if he can obtain tickets to any HP Pavillion event as oppose to spending money in the concession stands. We were only here for 30 minutes and we wanted to get to HP Paviillion ASAP! read more

I love this place! I'm normally not a pho type of girl, even though I'm Vietnamese... But I love their pho! I always order the pho tai and the broth is always so rich in flavor! I could drink it for days. The noodles are cooked to perfection, as well. And the best thing about this place is how they always give you a lot of soup! One thing I love about this place is their banh cuon. It's delicious! The outside dough is nice and chewy, just the way I like it! it comes with 6 cut up pieces of cua lua! Yummy. The staff are super friendly and nice. And they are very fast on their toes. The minute you sit down, they hand you a menu. After ordering, they bring you your water and veggies. And within minutes (2-3 mins), your delicious pho will arrive right before your eyes!! The banh cuon will take some time (about 5-7 mins). The one thing I don't like about this place is their parking. You have to find street parking and it's really hard! But on the bright side, they have AC for the customers, while the staff uses a danky fan. read more

This Northern Vietnamese cuisine restaurant is a hole in the wall restaurant and it's been around forever. They are known for their Pho (beef noodle soup) and Pho Ap Chao (crispy chow fun - Vietnamese style). The food here is authentic and full of flavor. There are other delicious items on their menu besides the 2 mentioned items. The restaurant itself is not at its best and the service is not like a 5 star restaurant, but if you come in knowing these 2 facts and expect nothing but authentic, tasty foods then you will be very satisfied. The Pho broth is tasty with no MSG taste and the Tai (raw beef) is hand sliced, and not machine sliced. Beware of their hot sauce though! There's Siracha, and there's HOT sauce. For those who can't do spicy foods, DO NOT even come near the ketchup looking bottle of hot sauce as it's super spicy. Otherwise, Bon appetit! read more

This place really isn't that great, although the food around it isn't great either. That Take One Pizza place that just opened up across the street tastes like frozen pizza. Although my coworker BC likes it, which is strange because shes so dang picky about everything - she also pets me from time to time. Probably going to start taking swimming lessons from her soon tho since I'm training for a triathalon. Amici's is overpriced. And Lee Yick Laudromat doesn't serve food, and to tell you the truth it looks pretty shady. My company is located in the big building next to Dac Phuc. The food on Thursdays is pretty legit during tax season, but the other days its pretty crappy. Except for her Beef Stroganoff :) You are welcome to come to our office and try it out! I came here once with my brother and his family because he claims this is the best and healthiest pho place. I had some of my niece's pho and NO this is no the best and healthiest pho. The broth looked all mirky and tasted pretty bland (maybe that's why my brother thinks its healthy?). No thanks, I like my broth clear. They also tell you to use their hot sauce (which they claim is not available elsewhere) but I think it is to hide the nasty bland flavor. Finally my dish, the highly recommended pho ap chao came out, and it has got to be the grossest thing I have ever eaten. The fried pho was really crispy but all you see is oil. I know it's fried, but seriously? Oil dripping into my mouth it NOT good. Then the beef sauce made me want to puke. It tasted like they took the meat, veggies and let it simmer in broth until it got this thick consistency... the consistency of SALIVA. Yes, the consistency of saliva, except it isn't yours but maybe the cooks? Gross, I know, but I really almost puked in my mouth trying to be polite to eat what I could. And also tried their world famous fried bananas and no, it is not the best. Maybe masked by the "coolness" of pouring rum on it and lighting it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something to rave about. This place gets top billing because it's close to work and the food is a good diversion from the Subway, sonoma chicken coop and other chain-y restaurants surrounding me. My favorites are also the dishes that will probably clog your arteries. The Pho Ap Chao is divine. Its literally deep friend noodles and there is a great meat sauce on top with bok choy and other vegetables. YUM. I also am a fan of their Stir fried beef and noodles. The lemongrass flavor and caramelized beef bits.. delish. Also the extra spicy sauce makes everything pop! Use with caution I wouldnt come here for the atmostphere-- its lacking unless you like diner booths that make you sink down. Its a good place for a quick, filling meal. It's very close to the hub of San Jose high rise area, next to the hotels, Children discovery museum, and the HP pavilion. 1 star for not getting sick after dinning at this place. You'll have to make quite an effort to get the attention of the staff to get you a menu, get your tea, and get your check. The place is like a hole in the wall, but not extremely dirty. I will not recommend sitting at the back room because it's so close to the bathroom which is kind of gross. Their soup broth is bland, almost taste like water. Their fish sauce is extremely stinky. Don't expect any quality here. It's a place for get in and out quickly. For the price they're charging (about $10/person with tax), you can find a much better place around. read more

Everyone who has spent enough time in San Jose seems to consider themselves an expert on pho. For myself, while I am not Vietnamese, having had the opportunity to eat at many Vietnamese restaurants, including during my visit to VN, I feel I've experienced enough breadth and variety to have a solid base for comparison. That all said, the best Vietnamese restaurants I've eaten at have usually been "dirty hole in the walls" (correlational only of course :) ), and Dac Phuc is no exception. Don't come here expecting pampered service, but they do bring out your food very quickly. I almost always order pho here (the broth is usually really good and I don't like to tamper with it but I if you like they have homemade hot sauce that is pretty hot and tasty). However, I've had a chance to try several dishes, and they've all been good. If you don't want wet noodles, you can try their vermicelli or pho ap chao, which is exceptionally tasty. The banh cuon is not bad either. If you are with friends it is also worth ordering a fried banana as it is not too heavy and very tasty. Lastly, they do have good Vietnamese-style coffee if you are craving or haven't tried. Overall quick, tasty, and cheap - a winning combination and why this is one of my primary places for Vietnamese food in SJ. read more

Sharks home game, tonight, and every place on the street is packed... except this place. Bad sign. I walk in, and I'm THE ONLY ONE in the place... I'm seated and given a menu immediately. It's a short menu (ie. Choices in pho are only a couple dishes), so the pick is pretty easy and quick (thigh the smell coming out of the kitchen isn't exactly whetting my appetite, either). So... I wait. I check in to the place on Foursquare and Yelp... even typing comments. I troll Facebook and what-not, interact with friends, but all that is happening is the server is sitting at a table, chatting on her phone... Even as I pretty clearly have my menu sure and pretty much stare her down... waiting. Oh well... I should have known better when this place is COMPLETELY EMPTY prior to a Sold Out Sharks game - seems pretty obvious why they're slow, even while everything else nearby has lines out the door. I am sick.. and when I am sick there is no better feeling than sweating over a hot bowl of pho.. clearing out my nasal passage of all of its snot..dont worry it doesnt fall in my soup..haha.. I decided to check out this spot near my work..literally around the corner.. quiet convienent for a pho addict such as myself... Let me tell you looks can be decieving and were they.. I walk into what appeared to be a nice outter exterior.. and the inside well... it looked a little retro to me.. and not in a good way.. I waited for about 7 minutes.. not to bad.. I ordered the "pho ga" chicken soup to go.. I got back to my office.. and before I started to eat.. my coworker threw out "Yeh..ive had that place..but its spicy..".. I figured he was just as wussy and thought it was a mild spicy.. so i threw my normal 3 lids of cocksauce..that red stuff whatever its called and the oyster sauce.. i think thats what thats called ahha.. .I was now ready to eat.. Thank heaven there's a Pho restaurant conveniently located across the street from my apartment complex. That means I can get pho whenever I please...except on Mondays, since it's closed. And any time before 7p since that's what time they normally close. But other than that - I can get it whenever I please! When coming here for the first time, it looks like a little hole-in-the-wall, mom and pops place. But those are the best kinds, right? I remember getting the combo pho with bbq pork, shrimp and beef brisket the first time I came here about a month ago, which tasted pretty awesome (especially when I wasn't really feeling that good). So it was very comforting to my stomach. And today, I stopped by to get my sick boyfriend some pho with chicken, which smelled pretty delicious (I'm sure it was a good as it smelled), and it had me craving some all of a sudden. Now I regret getting that burger for myself somewhere else. I should've known better because now I want some pho! DAMMIT! The only downside for most people is that it's a cash-only place. I love this place. I have been eating here for years. The food is consistently yummy ( Pho Ga!!) and the service is fast. I love how the woman who runs the place knows my order as soon as I walk in. The decor isn't super hip and modern, but that's not why I come here. read more

I go here just about every other week, so I definitely can't give them a bad review... the food is amazing even though I mainly stick to the same few entrees [Pho Tai & Ap Chau]. My entire family are regulars and they KNOW their food as restaurant/business owners themselves... we LOVE the food here... it's healthy, yet tastes wonderful at the same time!!! I definitely give the food 5+ stars! I'll have to admit that the service isn't great and the restaurant doesn't look the best [for that, the restaurant overall will receive 4/5 stars]. I yelped this place after arriving in San Jose on a rainy afternoon and was looking for a place to eat before checking into our hotel. It was old, sticky, and dirty looking but a lot of Vietnamese people were eating inside. My dh & i shared the following: pho with rare beef fried eggrolls pork & shrimp springrolls There was nothing bad about anything but I thought the food would be really good for such a busy hole in the wall. Everything was cheap though - total bill including tip was a little over $20. * A lot of people were ordering a flaming banana dish ~ wish I would of ordered it just to try but unfortunately wasn't feeling like it @ the time. read more

Dac Phuc WTF? We went to the Tech Museum to see the Star Wars exhibit and had noticed Dac Phuc Restaurant on our way to the museum. We love Vietnamese and other ethnic foods. We walked into Dac Phuc on a Saturday for lunch, and the place was packed. We stood for about 5 minutes and then were seated at a table by the window. We looked around and noticed that we were the only white people in the restaurant, which is usually the sign of a good ethnic place. Unfortunately, we also noticed that the restaurant was really dated and not very clean. I think that the whole place needs a good scrubbing. I'm kind of a foodie, and I like a good hole in the wall as much as the next person, but ....... We looked at the menu and decided on some fresh spring rolls, requesting no meat, but tofu instead, and I chose one of the two vegetarian entrees, Stir-fried tofu with lemon grass and chili, and my husband chose chicken with lemon grass and chili. We also ordered two ice teas. The ice teas came out in super small glasses. After a while, our entrees appeared. Mine was basically a plate of lightly fried tofu with lemon grass and chili on it with a pile of white rice. The flavor of mine was actually really good, spicy, and complex, as was my husband's. When we were done with that, our appetizer of fresh spring rolls came out. They were quite good, but would have been better 25 minutes earlier. Our ice teas were long gone, so we flagged down the waiter and asked for a refill, and he brought out one small glass of ice tea. We shared that. The service was not very friendly or helpful, but the food was delivered to the table. Even a little personality can go a long way to making a hole in the wall a fun place to be. The price for the meal was not expensive, thank goodness. With so many awesome restaurants to choose from in that area of San Jose, I don't think we would go there again and can't recommend it, especially for it's cleanliness, or lack thereof. I've been to this place many times over the years. Their menu is somewhat simple but the soup is very good. Just get the large combination beef, finish every drop & thank me later. If you like adding sauces to your broth they've got you covered. They have several different bottles and jars with everything you need to spice up your broth. I generally feel their broth stands up on its own, but if I'm sick, I like to add their hot sauce. I swear by Phó Ga as a cold remedy. Their spring rolls are good here as well as the banana flambé. I normally just get the large Phó, but from time to time I splurge. When you pay, they give you little mints that taste pretty good. The service here is really nice. The lady who runs the register is very sweet. She has always been nice, and seems genuinely thankful for my patronage. I've read other reviews saying that this is a hole in the wall. As a seasoned Phó veteran, I've sat in many restaurants that are much worse. They have nice comfortable booths & spacious tables. It's kinda dark, and there are no TVs, so I guess it's a hole in the wall compared to San Pedro Square. I think reviewers might have meant it doesn't look like much from the outside. read more
