We were on a drive down the coast enjoying the nice weather, and this place has been on our list to visit. It's a cute little outdoor spot, near where Highway 92 and Highway 1 meet on the coast. A few outdoor tables in the shade, but there's more seating in the adjacent shopping center. We wanted the potato chips, but they were sold out. We settled on the cheeseburger and the mushroom burger. Both were good, though not as mind-blowing as I was expecting: white bread with a fried egg and onions and other condiments. Maybe $15 each? This place caught my eye when looking for a lunch option in Half Moon Bay. It was a great spot to get something quick to eat with tables outside to sit with our dogs! I had a bite of the mushroom sandwich and hamburger sandwich, both of which were amazing. I would say the mushroom sandwich was my favorite. The homemade potato chips were super addictive to eat and I really enjoyed how they put puffed rice in their Mac and cheese. We did try the special of the day which was a ribeye sandwich that had way too much Dijon mustard and horseradish. It was so powerful that I could literally feel pain in my head, but it definitely did clear my sinuses haha. The sweet of the day was a cinnamon bun, which just tasted like very sweet icing to me. Super cute little restaurant in half moon bay with a small menu but lots of flavor. Kitchen is in a little caboose which is fun. Nice people and everything is packaged in completely compostable or recyclable packaging. They have both compost and recycle bins. For sandwiches they have the maitake and a hamburger sandwich. Each has an egg, cheese, picked red onions, lettuce and special sauce. The maitake was super tender and had great flavor. I also got the Mac and cheese and the puffed rice was an interesting combo. Super juicy and yummy. The mushroom burger was soo good. Nice umami flavor and the runny yolk gave a fantastic creaminess. The burger was also incredibly fatty and tasty. IMHO - Covid Edition Dad's Luncheonette has been on my wish list for a long time. Dad's has a reputation so to avoid long lines, we opted to arrive on a Thursday as close to opening (11 a.m.) as possible. We got there around 11:45 and there was a short line, but a whole picnic table available for us! I'm happy they have a small menu so that I'm not wasting time trying to decide what to order. My friend and I both ordered the Hamburger Sandwich ("grass fed beef, organic egg, Dad's Sauce, melty cheese, pickled red onions, oak lettuce on grilled white bread, $12") and the home-made organic potato chips $3.75. I knew from other reviews that the chips often sell out so I didn't want to miss them! Other offerings include Mom's Herb Salad, Mac & Cheese w/puffed rice, soup du jour, and dessert du jour. Our meals were brought to our picnic table in separate paper bags with our names on them! The first thing I noticed was that one slice of my grilled white bread was slightly burned... Other than that, the Hamburger sandwich was yummy. The burger patty was nice and thin so it was easy to eat. The fried egg was perfectly cooked, not too runny but just enough. The pickled onions made a nice addition. I can't honestly tell you if I tasted any of Dad's Sauce... The home-made potato chips were okay, nothing notable. I don't feel the need to order them again and will try the mac & cheese next time. I also like to order a sweet but forgot to get the chai cookie! While we ate, we noticed more people queueing up. Our picnic table had more room to share with others but no one sat with us, which is still understandable during pandemic times. Dad's Luncheonette in beautiful Half Moon Bay is a local favorite. The highly regarded Chef Scott Clark hails from two Michelin starred restaurants in San Francisco, Benu and Saison. Chef Scott opened Dad's in 2017, while the menu is simple everything is homemade using local ingredients. The Hamburger Sandwich is served on white bread, the meat was cooked perfectly, slightly charred. The pickled red onions, lettuce, melted cheese, fried egg and Dad's special sauce were the perfect combination to make this one of the tastiest hamburgers I have had. A friend enjoyed the Mushroom Sandwich, the Maitake Mushroom was also served on white bread with lettuce, pickled red onions, melty cheese, fried egg and Dad's sauce. Everything is under $15 and the menu is simple, they do specials on the weekend that are cool cooking experiments not normally on menu. Over the years they've followed feedback and added more outside tables to handle the crowds. The must tries are: Hamburger: Grassfed Beef, Soft Egg, Melty Cheese, Red Onion Pickles, Dad's Sauce, Red Oak Lettuce on Grilled Rosalind Bakery White Bread. This is FIRE, you can taste the quality of the ingredients. Homemade Potato Chips: Super delicious, probably the best chips I've ever had. If splitting a burger with someone else try the mushroom burger, its very good and might even be better than the hamburger, seriously! Mac and cheese is too plain for us, it has an interesting texture but we stopped ordering it after 2 times. Herb salad is very interesting with local herbs, we tried 2 different seasons and stopped getting it. Have to update my review to 5/5 after coming here for a few more visits. tl;dr Get the mushroom sandwich and soup...tru I love meat, but Dad's is one restaurant where my Pavlovian response is activated by their mushroom sandwich. The Maitake mushrooms are super umami and go so well with the soft egg and cheese. The pickled onions offers some nice acidity to complement the creamy components. Hands down, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had the privilege to eat. I also recommend getting whatever the weekly soup is as they have always been solid. This time, it was a carrot curry soup, which was delicious. I really enjoyed my stop here! I decided to visit after finding myself in Halfmoon Bay for a weekend and boy was I glad I did! The store is located in a train caboose which adds a fun environmental flair and the menu is small but streamlined. Parking is free and plentiful, but depending on the time of day there might be trouble finding a place (I came when there was a farmer's market going on which made finding parking an issue). There are a few benches to sit at but for the most part this is a fast casual take away place. I ordered two items: their famed mushroom sandwich and their mac and cheese with puffed rice. The sandwich featured 2 slices of fresh grilled white bread, an egg with runny yolk, deliciously buttery mushrooms and pickled onions which provided just the right amount of tang to make the flavors pop. The sandwich isn't the cheapest price you'll find around, but I really enjoyed this item! I also tried their Mac and cheese with puffed rice. The rice provided a crunch to each bite and was unique. I didn't mind the rice, but another friend of mine seemed to hate the combination. This item may be a hit or miss depending on a person's personal palate. The pasta noodles were cooked perfectly and each bite filled with delicious gooey cheese, but I don't think this item was as good as the sandwich. Line was short but we were there around 11 when it opened! FOOD// Hamburger sandwich - Bread toasted and buttery and delicious and tender/soft! OOh so good. The hamburger patty was fatty and salty and rich. I don't think it was cooked medium rare, but I don't care. Pickled onions helped cut through the fat and salt with sweet acidity. And the egg has a gooey runny delicious yolk that absorbs/melds with the flavors of the meat patty. It played so well together. Homemade Potato chips. These are cut so FINELY that they are just wisps of air! So light, even lighter than Lays. They're so delicate that there weren't many whole pieces in our order of fries. Regardless still delicious! There's this interesting yellow powdered flavoring on top, I think its cheese or mustard. But it was well seasoned with whatever special mix this is! I had bookmarked Dad's Luncheonette for quite some time now so I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to try it when I opted to go after a looooong hike at Purisima Creek (highly recommended!). Upon arriving, the crowd was pretty small and the line moved pretty fast. The menu is a short one, but I would be kidding you if I told you I was coming here for anything but one of the sandwiches. While I do have a special place in my heart for mushrooms, after a grueling but rewarding hike, beef was the way to go this time. With Covid restrictions in place, there weren't too many places to sit outside...plus it was a particularly windy day so my car definitely seemed to be the best option. Unwrapping the sandwich, it smelled divine but I always feel like sandwich bread sandwiches need to be cut diagonally. They just taste better than way...and with that, I undid the wax paper and performed a little surgery. First take on the cross-section? Divine. It begins with simple white bread, admittedly not my favorite, griddled. Then comes a thin griddled beef patty topped with cheese and a jammy fried egg, yum! The house pickled red onions added a nice tang, green leafy lettuce gave a nice crisp bite and provided some sharp color and some of dad's secret sauce tied it altogether. All in all, I thought it was delicious...the only downfall for me (and I carry huge bread bias) is that the white bread just isn't enough to carry the sandwich. I've always heard about Dad's Hamburger sando, and I found myself in HMB this past week. The place I was going to was in the same parking lot, how could I not stop and try? If you like sourdough bread, this juicy burger comes on Rosalind Bakery sourdough, a local Pacifica bakery. The patty itself isn't the biggest, but I think for the average appetite, it's a big enough sando. I def could've used some double patty action here. The egg was runny, which I loved. The pickled onions added a nice kick to. A very well-rounded burger, that makes sense why it's so popular. Only thing I think would've taken it up a notch was something spicy. For a a side, I went with the mac n cheese. TBH, not the biggest fan. Although it was creamy, which I how I like my mac, it needed more seasoning. They added some crunchy element with the puffed rice to the top, but I felt like it needed more salt and pepper, personal preference I suppose. Def would opt for the soup or the homemade potato chips next time around. Overall, if you find yourself in HMB, it's worth a stop and try. I ate here once and that was definitely enough for me. I don't ever write reviews but I literally couldn't help myself with this one. The food was worse than tasteless, it was disgusting. In fact I was wishing it was tasteless. The only thing that kept me eating it was that I spent an outrageous amount of money on it - honestly we should have just gone to McDonald's. The service was bad too, the short bald guy (I think the owner?) was extremely rude to my wife when she was just asking about an item on the menu. I came here because the reviews were so amazing but ended leaving disappointed and insulted. If I could give anyone a piece of advice, it would be to never eat at this dude's restaurant. The roasted grain on top gives a crunchy texture, and add another flavor profile to a simple Mac & cheese The interior is very small, maybe sits 5 people at most. Some picnic benches outside though so still possible to sit and dine. Most people get it to-go for a park or beach picnic. Line can get long, especially when we went during a long weekend, but it moves quickly. Once you place the order inside, staff will bring out the food and call your name. Don't be scared of the long line, it's well worth it. We finally had no excuse to visit for Saturday lunch since we were visiting Half Moon Bay (5 mins away) The boxcar is "parked" in a cute center of shops & eateries. The sandwich is a beef patty between toasted sliced bread with marinated onions & fluffy fried egg. Each bite was the perfect blend of flavors and the yolk was not runny but added the right amount of "sauce". The patty was cooked well (no pink) but surprisingly moist. The soup was fresh and delicious. The Mac was topped with toasted rice and the cheese was light ... so good!! I've seen this spot for years and finally got the opportunity to try it when I had an errand to run at another shop in the same complex. I arrived about 12:30pm on a Friday. Fortunately, there was only a short line (probably because it was kind of rainy that day). They were already sold out of the chips, so I ordered two hamburger sandwiches - one each for my husband and I. After ordering at the little stand/booth, I walked with my dog around the outdoor area. They have a couple seats to eat at and there were other dogs there too. If it was a nice day, it's be a fun place to set up a picnic! My order was ready in about 10 minutes and I picked it up from the tables. Napkins were already in the bag, so I hopped in my car and headed home. It took me about 20 mins to get home and dive into the burger. It was still warm, but not hot. I liked the addition of the egg, but the bread was a bit over cooked for me (a bit blackened) and the patty didn't cover all the bread. I didn't feel like it had much flavor, it just seemed greasy to me. My overall reaction to it was that it was "ok". Not great, not bad. Just kind of "meh". I've had in-n-out 30+ mins after it was picked up and I still feel like it's always yummy, so I don't think my opinion would have changed much had I eaten it right away.
