Our favorite go to spot in Half Moon Bay. After a busy and chilly morning at the pumpkin patch, we went to Dad's to get our favorite burgers. The ingredients are so fresh and flavorful, yet simple. The big highlight from this trip for me was the soup special, pumpkin chili. I hugely regret not taking a photo of it because it's not the chunkier chili, but more broth like. It was warming, but had a nice pucker to the broth. My husband kept taking spoonfuls of my bowl thinking I didn't notice... I had to politely guard my bowl when it getting towards the end. This place is still open during the shelter in place! But they are taking the necessary precautions. You order by calling their number and giving your credit card. Then when the order is ready, they place your bag on the table. I had the hamburger sandwich, which was delicious. The fried egg and pickled onions make it so tasty! I also had Mom's herb salad, and it was so unique, creative, and delicious!! It was my first time having an herb salad, and their vinaigrette really married everything together. Finally checked this place off my list. Maybe I came years too late for the hype? Tried the burger and the maitake sandwich and definitely preferred the maitake. Burger sandwich wasn't anything special. Bread was indeed a bit soggy, like some of the reviews had warned. Would I drive out here for this again? Probably not. Such a cute lunch spot if you're around Half Moon Bay! I came here a bit later than the typical lunch hours at around 1:30pm so unfortunately a lot of the sides were already sold out for the day. I ordered the burger sandwiches and got some seats outside with my puppy. Staff are friendly and it's a cool spot to hang out since it's a historic trolley. The sandwich was so delicious! This is a small hole in the wall place right off highway 1. You order at the counter and then find your own seating at the picnic tables right outside. The hamburger sandwich is YUMMY. You get an explosion of flavors in your mouth: from the soft, fresh bread to the flavorful meat patty to the sweetness of the pickled onions. It somehow all works together beautifully! I don't know how this sandwich was so amazing, but it was pretty mind blowing. I got the regular hamburger sandwich and added mushrooms and egg. It was decently sized and I devoured the whole thing, and wanted more lol (insert piggie emoji). The meat was tender and flavorful, the bread was nicely toasted with butter, the egg yolk made it all creamy and the mushrooms made it juicy. It was the perfect hamburger sandwich. Cute little caboose on the side of the road. Order take out at the counter then there are these cute little logs and stools you can sit on nearby to enjoy your food. The menu is simple with only two items as mains, then there are various side items and desserts and such. They do sell out which was the case for us - they were sold out of everything except for the two main items. Ordered one of each entree item of the housemade burger sandwich and the mushroom sandwich ($12 each). Pricier than your average burger but then again you are getting special ingredients like grass fed beef and maitake mushrooms. The burgers come in grilled white bread, soaked in grease/butter - delicious and decadent! I love the addition of eggs. The mushrooms were the gourmet farmers market kind. The onions are sweet and really brighten the whole thing. I didn't try the meat burgers but my friend's first comment was that it was salty (which I wouldn't mind - I love salt!). The runny egg and pickled red onion were a dope combination on the grilled sourdough. I sat inside at the counter and appreciated the interior wood counters and potted plants, and it was cool to overhear the cashier taking orders during the lunch rush. They got my order wrong, never apologized, then took their sweet time fixing it. It took almost an hour to grab some pickup. How valuable is your time? My son and I were looking for a quick bite today after finishing our ritual volunteer work at the beaches and needing to high tail it out of the coast to get him to school. Dad's Luncheonette was a good choice for this reason alone because of how quickly the food was prepared and wolfed down. Beyond speed, there wasn't anything else that made this experience repeat-worthy. His hamburger and my mushroom sandwich tasted good on the first bite, but we both became increasingly disinterested in our food with each subsequent bite. And by the time we finished our sandwiches, we agreed that there was too much grease and mushiness to want eat them again. Unfortunately, the menu is very limited. These are the only main dishes offered. And the sides and beverages are limited too. I would expect a place that specializes in burgers to offer fries and shakes, but they don't. Then there is seating. The three benches in the parking lot were taken. So, we had to find another spot to eat our lunch. Came here on a cold windy rainy day and was surprised to find this little haven of surprisingly great food and I left warm and happy. Had the burger sandwich, Mac and cheese with puff rice and split pea soup + key lime pie The burger sandwich is fantastic- it's super juicy so double wrap it with extra napkins. The pickled onion is superb with the burger sandwich. I wish I ordered it with double meat patty and extra onion. The Mac and cheese is on point with the delicious cheese sauce and the puff rice gives it an extra boost in texture. Split pea soup had a dollop of sour cream and Meyer lemon zesting on it. Parking is free and plentiful. I have never had a hard time finding a spot! Now onto wait times. There is usually a little bit of a line and the sandwiches usually take around 15 minutes or so to come out, but good things take time. They may be sold out, so try and come earlier if you can. There is also no area to sit, but I will either sit in the car, or take it to the beach. The absolute cutest lil spot! We wanted to grab a quick lunch in Half Moon Bay and stopped by Dad's for some Mushroom Sandwiches. The line was quite long on a Saturday afternoon but well worth the wait. The Mushroom Sandwich is delectable. It came with a good portion of hearty mushrooms, and the Dad's sauce pulls everything together without being too heavy. The egg was cooked to perfection and was so soft. I will say that they were a bit skimpy on the pickled onions, and overall, it's definitely an expensive sandwich -- probably not something I could get on the regular. There's a few tables outside to sit on, but we just ended up finding a bench in the plaza adjacent to the stand. We devoured our sandwiches within minutes, so we weren't sittin) there for long haha. The Menu board is limited but always has their famous Hamburger Sandwich, Mushroom Sandwich, Mac and Cheese along with a soup and dessert of the day. Sure the Hamburger sandwich was juicy, but the Mushroom Sandwich was AMAZING. It was so incredibly flavorful for a vegetarian sandwich. The soup of the day was a corn chowder which was wayyy too salty. They have a kids menu as well but the grilled cheese was average with two slices of barely melted cheese. It's a cute little trailer in the parking lot of a larger plaza, so you're waiting outdoors in line to order, but they do have little social distancing markers on the ground. I was a bit disappointed stopping in when I had been wanting to check out this quaint caboose with the wonderful ratings. All we ordered was the hamburger sandwich. They were already out of the fries and Mac and cheese. For $14.50 all we got was a small hamburger patty on 2 large pieces of toasted bread with condiments. My husband had the burger with the egg and mine was without. They both tasted good. We really enjoyed the dad's sauce and the pickled red onions. I wish they were bigger... aka they ran out of a lot of stuff... no more of their famous tater chips, then ran out of salad. Fortunately the reason we came the burger samich was still available. We specifically came today due to the glorious weather and it's been a minute and 3 decades since we took the Route 1 trek south. Not only a brilliant day, but hills as green as an Irish pasture, thanks to a monster winter. Time to get out and open up da whip! Nope sorry! Ah well. Bae doesn't care how well the beast grips the road, with Sir Winston in her lap, she wants her grand tour to be relaxed,not the height of white knuckle excitement. And even if I wanted too, it was pretty much bumper to bumper traffic the whole way. Winston had no clue what he was getting himself into. Not only did we get da burger sami, he got one for himself which he woofed so darn fast, I think he thought there might be a way he was getting ours too! So tiny inside but served in little boxes makes it easy to take out, sit in parking lot, car or even beach! I scored a killer latte at the Cove cafe and the generous owner allowed us to sit outside his place. So once settled, I walked back into Dads to ask the owner busy wrapping up a container of trash to holler across the parking lot when our order was ready. While marveling at the thick consistency of the Coves latte, the owner dude, instead of yelling, personally delivered our grub. Nice touch for sure! Beside the best burger sami in the bay, we also ordered s special bean and potato so, plus the Max &cheese with fried rice cracklins atop. That soup was deep like.... deep! Complex hearty clean, popping! The Mac and cheese, omg other worldly, and the rice cracklins on top sent it to another dimension! Great food, even though set selection, and the owner chef is an interesting character! Very full of life. And a perfectionist. My mushroom sandwich had a whole maitake in it! Never in my life have I eaten a maitake sandwich... it's too expensive for the places I eat at. But that's what I got! I love Japanese mushrooms, but when I ordered, I thought it was just portabella. Surprise! Then, the cannoli! OMG, after I mentioned that I'm picky about cannoli (because a lot of people don't prepare them fresh right before they serve them to you and so the shell can get soggy, plus filling quality), he served it to us himself beautifully arranged. And it was a remarkable cannoli. The filling was lighter & creamier than typical, and he put a sweet lemon ringe inside, and then topped it with roasted crumbled almonds, and a blueberry sauce that was a bit tart. This was the most innovative cannoli I've ever ever eaten and also pretty to look at, and I'm going to copy the recipe if I can figure it out. What I loved most was that it had this mix of flavors and was not too sweet or filling, which can also be a problem with cannoli. After that experience, my friends and I decided to read up on the place, and we found out that he was a Michelin chef in SF before opening his own place. That totally explains the perfectionism! This is a solid place if you're visiting HMB and wanting a chill place for lunch. Their menu is small as there's usually a few snacks along with 2 main sandwich offerings, a carnivore and a vegetarian friendly one. I ordered the burger and chips and these items will satisfy that classic duo craving. My favorite thing about this place is the vibe. The restaurant is set in this revitalized cargo train caboose where the inside house a few simple seats. There are more picnic seatings outside under the pine trees. My parents and I arrived in Half Moon Bay and were ready to eat, so we pulled up Yelp and started looking for a lunch spot. We saw that Dad's Luncheonette was opening soon and the environment looked neat, so we showed up right before they opened. Right as they opened the door, we walked in, which was a good thing because at least 8 more people followed us in! This place has a reputation! We were first in line so we kinda felt rushed to order so we wouldn't hold up the line. My mom and I split a Hamburger Sandwich and Macaroni and Cheese, and my dad got his own Hamburger Sandwich. We sat down (very limited seating inside) and my dad noticed on the menu that cheese came on the burger, and we asked if it could be taken off, but it was too late in the order. However, when we got the food, we couldn't really taste any cheese, so he stayed a happy camper. The sandwich was great and so was the Mac & Cheese. The puffed white rice was an interesting addition to this dish, but it was surprisingly good. As we were leaving, we saw a few people eating their lunch in their car, so if you want a seat, get there early. We'd definitely come back again next time we're in town! read more

This visit was 2 weeks ago before the Covid-10 restrictions loosened up to allow both outdoor and limited indoor dining. One day my wife decided she wanted Steamed Clams - not a bad idea but her favorite place is over on the Coast - about a 50 minute drive during non-commute traffic patterns. Unfortunately, becuase it was such a nice day in March, a lot of people had a similar idea. All our favorite places were all jam packed and the minimum wait would have been about an hour. So, tried to think of a place to go to and she remembered seeing a review on TV of Dad's Luncheonette, a very small but cute place housed in an old railroad caboose car. During non-Covid times, they have a small dining area inside the Caboose + some outdoor seating in a walled off area on the end of the caboose. Now, that area is where the orders are taken and paid for. Here's what we had: 1. A hamburger with a fried egg on white bread. Pretty pricy in my book. $40 for two fried egg burgers on white bread with potato chips. No drinks. The potato chips which were, maybe homemade, at least I think. They had some funny "varnish" installed on them. The varnish being a salt, perhaps maybe garlic powder sort of concept. I've been meaning to stop by and try out this spot for years and finally decided that on my next trip to Half Moon Bay I would give it a whirl. Dad's Luncheonette has been on my Bay Area must eats list for over two years, and I finally got to try it one weekend back in September. My husband and I arrived five minutes before Dad opened up shop. We were able to order quickly, and our wait was about 10-15 minutes. We got one of each sammich, the potato chips, and an order of mac and cheese. The potato chips were the best. I LOVED the chips, and Dad needs to package the chips and sell 'em! The sandwiches...I...I'm confused! I wanted to love them, but alas, I did not. I tried both, but both were just messy and not as great as everyone led me to believe. The hype failed me, and I just can't put into words WHY. The macaroni and cheese was okay; it's not the soul food mac and cheese I grew up on and it's not like mac and cheese from Hometown in Oakland, but it was okay. Different. The puff wild rice is hard and if you've got crowns, a dental implant, and terrible teeth like me, avoid that crunchy, wild rice. Hubby really wanted to try this place. And we happened to be in the area. The kitchen is inside a caboose. You place your order at the desk and signs encourage you to distance. We ordered 3 hamburger sandwiches. It's literally a patty with almost over easy egg enclosed between 2 slices of bread. It's unique with toasted buttered bread and the sandwich wasn't greasy. Hubby thought there wasn't enough of their sauce. Both of us agreed we wouldn't go out of our way for a $12 Hamburger sandwich.
