It's like a family restaurant. Japanese comfort food. A variety of things to eat. Can get packed. Not a fancy roll place fyi. Better if you want like an array of food like curry and rice bowl type things. The servers are great and quirky. Quirky in the best possible way. Can be a long wait on weekends as they are walk-in only. Tempura is really good. Curry looked great, although didn't try. I like the sushi rolls. A lot of good fried stuff. I love this place. I live locally and have been coming here since I was a kid. Mixed poke bowl and garlic baby squid are my favorites here, but I've tried so much of the menu - you really can't go wrong. Don't go in expecting an abundance of sushi roll options, but do expect incredible Japanese home style cuisine. The owner is the sweetest lady ever and the staff is usually very friendly. Only downside is they get busy at times and have limited seating. Also parking can be a hassle (usually go for street parking or parking near Marshall's across the street.) read more

This is a cool spot. The sushi is good. It's simple. It's fresh. The rolls are super inexpensive and the menu is inexpensive as a whole compared to pretty much every other sushi place. The best way to describe this place is that their sushi is the style of what you would get in a Japanese grocery store, but it never had a moment to sit on display. Overpriced, crowded, hectic. Three words to describe our service. I ordered a takeout, was told it would be a 45 minute wait. No problem, just sat in the car waiting for our order to be done. After an hour I walk in, I can see my food being currently bagged by the server, and proceed to stand there waiting for 20 minutes while he 1. rebags it 5 times, 2. picks up another person's call and writes down their order, 3. while the other two servers keep saying excuse me to get past me while I'm standing right in front of my food. It's not like he didn't know I was there, as he greeted me and told me he was bagging my food when I arrived. Any of the other servers could have handed me my food, but I suppose telling them that it's mine apparently isn't enough for them and they can't bother to check to see if it is. Food is good, don't get me wrong, but the price is equivalent to about what I paid for Sugarfish next door, but the service and quality of food there was magnitudes better there than what I received here. read more

Daichan isn't fancy, but it's actually kind of adorable. And authentic. They characterize their cooking as "Japanese soul food," which means that while there are some sushi/sashimi-style offerings, it's more like a cool little Japanese cafe, with various rice bowls, curry and more. I've been a few times--and the memory of their delicious Katsu curry still lingers deliciously in my mind--but this time, I let my companion get the curry (which he loved), and I ordered the spicy chicken. It's a very tasty dish, and accompanied by rice and veggies. While I want to try some of their other menu items, it's definitely a dish I'd order again. But as good as both of our mains were--and they were indeed--the show stopper might just have been our shared appetizer, baby squid with garlic, which was a bowl of incredibly tender and delicious baby squid with said garlic. Service is very friendly, prices are reasonable, portions will let you leave full but not overstuffed, and you can tell that everything here is prepared with love. The service here is amazing! They are a tiny little shop with a fairly large menu. I am normally wary of restaurants with too many different menu options, especially if its a small restaurant. However, I've tried many different dishes at Daichan and they were _all_ good. Like good to the point of "this tastes like I'm in Japan, eating at an Izakaya that specializes in meals that taste like home" If you have the option, upgrade to the Hijiki Seaweed Rice, you won't regret it. I've tried their Katsu, Karaage, and their Udon, and they were all delicious (im picky with Karaage and Udon)! My gf tried the Salmon Sashimi and was impressed by the quality (she worked at a Sushi restaurant for a few years). The only downside about Daichan's is the lack of parking, but this is LA, so you can't expect anything less. While they do have Valet, its usually all taken since it's next door to SUGARFISH. read more

Can't speak to the food here. Looks cute a lot of Japanese art and a cute small restaurant. Came here on a Tuesday night. Place was super packed we put our name down and proceeded to wait. We waited for an hour. Several tables were done eating and waiting forever to pay. And then other groups were done and just sitting there talking for the entire hour we were waiting. The servers looked very flustered and took forever even bussing the table to get the next person in. They need help. There were about 8 groups on the list waiting to be seated. They need to hurry up inconsiderate groups who have already eaten and move faster serving people and getting those waiting in. Will probably try again at lunch times read more

This has become one of my favorite restaurants in the city, and only sad I didn't discover it sooner! It has such a warm, family-run vibe, cute decor, and most importantly incredible food. My personal go-to is the miso black cod with rice plate, which reminds me of a tiny family-run restaurant I used to do take-out from during the summer I lived in Tokyo (and have been nostalgic for ever since). The sushi and chirashi options are wonderful, but this place really excels at some of the other options in Japanese cuisine that not every restaurant in LA does. Me and the Bf just came back from a trip to Tokyo so we were craving Japanese food! We usually end up at sugarfish but the line was long so we finally decided to try Daichan! We walked in and was seated immediately. The decorations on the wall were magnificent! Everything reminded me of the hole in the wall restaurants in Japan. It was so nice! Truly kawaii! The menu is diverse as you're able to order a multitude of small apps, sushi, soups, and rice plates. As a group of 3, we decided to order a bunch of shareable plates, soup, and the chirashi bowl to share. The servers were gracious enough to give us extra plates and bowls for sharing. The service was amazing. We had this young male server who gave us such a great run down of the menu and provided his recommendations. We took a lot of his recommendations and they were so good! Oishii! My favorite was the fried squid legs. They were crispy and the dipping sauce went perfect with it. The chirashi bowl was great because there was all kinds of different fish and seafood - perfect taste of everything. The sushi rice was perfectly seasoned as well. We had the curry udon and the udon was sooooo good. Cooked perfectly chewy. As you can see, everything was perfect! (Fave word of the night). Parking is a little tough in this small plaza. I am so happy we went here! I live close by and have had this place on my radar for a while. My parents came to visit and I decided to pull the trigger and try it, it was DOPE! We got garlic baby squid and the stuffed lotus root for appetizers. Both were great but I'd definitely recommend the lotus root for anyone who hasn't tried it: crispy on the outside, filled with delicious on the inside. Dinner was fantastic too. If you are sick of always doing sushi and want more sashimi, this is the place for you! The sashimi bowls/poke bowls were awesome. Sashimi of choice over rice, Avo and lettuce. The service was also excellent. Whenever I go to a new place I prefer when my server gives me clues to what the restaurant does best. He helped a lot with our sake choices and apps. visited before and had the entire place to ourselves, we enjoyed the unique decor, an amalgam of curiosities, my son admiring a collection of porcelain kittens while i studied clean lined and loosely colored japanese framed illustrations. food taken in such a colorful environment and shared with my son did not warrant much attention, i have little to say about it other than it was japanese inspired fare at a reasonable price today i decided to visit again with my girlfriend, both of us excited to spend a quiet lunch together. we opened the door and were abruptly greeted with a sign exclaiming wait to be seated. we waited, at first lost in conversation and then waited watching the two women attending the few seated tables and then waited mumbling about all the open tables then waited in frustration and silence as the two women continued to ignore us. suddenly behind us the door burst open and one of the women rushed over and asked the couple who walked in if they had called. they nodded and the waitress immediately brought them over to an open table without so much as acknowledging we had been standing there nearly twenty minutes. what made this especially frustrating is they do not take reservations. with open tables they proceeded to take the walk-in's order, served them appetizers, refilled the few seated patron's waters, then bussed another table all while we quietly continued to wait. another couple arrived and the four of us congregated in the tight space near the door. the longer we waited the more confused the new arrivals looked. i heard them asking each other is anyone going to seat us. despite having waited nearly a half hour i assured them they would get to us eventually. after cleaning another table and a languorous chat between the two waitresses in the back one of them finally told us we could pick our seats. excited to order and finally in a seat we soon realized the struggle to order would be as arduous as the one to sit down, after continuing to be ignored another 15 minutes after we were seated we discretely tried raising our hands for attention. the waitress looked at me and walked right by. she then proceeded to ask the couple who arrived nearly 20 minutes after we had if they were ready to order. at this point we had enough and decided to leave. as a final indignity, the waitress smiled and thanked us for eating there! it saddens me, not so much the rude way we were treated but by the thought at one point a lot of love, sweat and tears went in to opening this place. someone had the desire to make a welcoming, uniquely curated space for patrons to enjoy time away from home and all that joy and inspiration ended up here, today, with a staff without any regard for its inception, hospitality or its guests. we walked in with anticipation and left feeling small having not been provided even a basic sense of acknowledgement. it makes me wonder why these two women choose to work here? my only hope, they are able to find in themselves passion for their chosen profession and on a human level, recognize a good restaurant is defined as much by its welcome as its food. thankfully for us, many places know and live by that. read more

I've been to Daichan a few times, and frankly the only thing that keeps me from going there constantly is the fact that I live too far away! I've never once been disappointed in all the times I've been. The staff is very thoughtful and sweet, the food is phenomenal, prices are reasonable, and the restaurant atmosphere is comforting and pleasant. Daichan is always worth the trip. Is the space small? We love love love the poke bowls at Daichan. My go to is the tuna poke bowl, spicy, on sushi rice. My wife gets the yellowtail poke bowl with the seaweed rice. Appetizers (gyoza, spicy fried chicken, etc) are also excellent. I love the vibe of the place - jammed with decorations, trinkets, statues, art, doodles, and more. Parking - Very small nook, not a whole lot of parking but you should find some street parking nearby. Street parking is on a small hill but the street is wide. I tried calling in around 6:30 but their line was busy and I couldn't get through, so I got there at 7pm - very packed! Which imo, is a testament to great food. A couple of people were patiently waiting to pay for their takeout, and I waited about 5-10 minutes before I got to order (thank you to the lovely guy who let me order even though he was there before me). I ordered a Daichan Sashimi Bowl, 8pcs (2 each of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and albacore). This was a cheer up gift for someone, and this picky eater said it was good. Fish was tender and rice was yummy. They were the envy of the party If you want to make a reservation, I advise going earlier. When I ordered (shortly after 7pm on Sunday) - cooked foods would've taken probably 45-50mins, uncooked ~25mins. My bowl was finished earlier, and I appreciated them for being so kind.
