I would give this place 5 stars, if I hadn't been to very similar stores where "most things" were $1, rather than $1.50. However, and I know this isn't the stores intention, Daiso makes a pretty great, thrifty, craft store. Crochet hooks for $1.50? Not too shabby! Also, the variety of adorable cupcake cups is stunning. What Joyita said about the hipsters having become, well, hip to Daiso? It is, sadly, true. Moment of silence, please. Okay, then. So by now people know about this fabulously random store and don't need to read about my finding an enormous bug net with a four-foot long pole for my neighbor's adorable children . Or the teeny tiny little yellow desktop trash can that says " Lemon : It eats the fruit of the orchard" on it. (You gotta love the Engrish.) Or all the thousands of other home, paper and plastic items that can be had here for $1.50. BUT HEAR THIS : I found a most creepy, X-RATED item mixed in amongst all the cuteness. Yep, I stared long and hard (whoops, no pun intended - but I'll leave it as it truly helps to describe said item, because there is no way I could write an outline of its usage here without some sort of Yelp axe of decency coming down on me) at the little pink box, wondering if it was some sort of joke. It's like something from the Japanese version of Spencer Gifts (albeit a more hardcore version) showing up amongst the flavored lip-gloss and fruit-scented magic markers at the Sanrio store. A real, live (and dirty) Easter egg. I padded my basket with stuff so as not to get an embarrassed reaction from the 16 year-old cashier, but suffice it to say that it's going to make one hell of an addition to the much-beloved Yelp fan-favorite Poe's belated birthday gift. Because let me tell you, if the hipsters had found what I unearthed at Daiso the other day - they would be absolutely beside their manga-reading, harajuku-lovin' selves. FOR REALS. read more

My first experience with Daiso was at a mall in Seattle, we had saw the sign from afar and had mistaken it for a Japanese restaurant. Little did we know, we had found the Japanese dollar store. We spent quite some time exploring the shelves, and looking at different things. Since we were traveling, I didn't go crazy and just bought a few things. So my first time at this Daiso, I was in heaven. It's HUGE!! And there's just so much stuff. For the most part, it's pretty organized and everything is separated into sections. The bad part, is that most of these items are in Japanese. So there's a been quite a few of those.. "what the heck is this" moments. But I do enjoy their little baking section, since I do candy making and baking. They have cute little liners, boxes, molds, and tools at cheap prices. Not to mention containers galore! Not that I really need a ton of boxes but I just can't help myself from buying them. I had a friend that once told me, that I'd probably buy an container, just so I could put another container in it. That's probably true. Haha. And this is probably a little strange. But in the pet section they have these giant q-tips that are made for pets. And while they look kind of like a gag gift/novelty item because they're huge. I absolutely LOVE them and stock up on them for my dog. I have an english bulldog that is prone to ear infections and I have to clean them everyday. But the way his ear canal is, it makes getting into the crevices a bit hard and he doesn't like the normal q-tips. But with these huge ones, he doesn't mind ear cleaning at all and he actually seems to enjoy it because it's more like a massage for him. I always stock up on these things whenever I go. I definitely love this store, but it's a love hate relationship. Because I would go in for something specific, and before I know it I'm suckered into buying a ton of other stuff that I probably didn't need but couldn't resist because it's only $1.50 read more

I'm glad someone finally filled the empty space that was previously inhabited by The Good Guys (RIP) in this area and it was a good use of space to have Daiso set up shop in here as the only branch in California. Walmart this is not, but way more impressive than Ichiban Kan in terms of general variety, though their snack offering selection is horrid to say the least; a few candy gumdrop kind of things, dry soba and udon, Okinwa rice cracker, Okinawa black sugar candy. $3 for a small bottle of konbu shoyu as well as small sized packets of katsuobushi (bonito flakes) and konbu dashi (kelp flakes). Definitely not some place where you shop for your Iron Chef ingredients, otherwise you'd be SOL. At least if you need Pocky, you can go to the SF Ichibankan store, they have a huge selection there. And you'd win if the secret Iron Chef ingredient was Pocky, but that's not gonna happen. It is fun to pop in and take a look if you are a sucker for these kind of things (cheap things at cheap prices, and the fact they are Japanese imports make it more "exotic" for the buyer's market here). The funny thing is that cheap imports like this are easily available in Taiwan. For example I saw a laundry net for stockings and other easily torn clothing for $1.50 but you can get that same thing in Taipei for 60 cents equivalent. Now I wonder who are the ones being suckered? Guys, don't stay here too long unless you have something you really want to get, acceptable if you came here with a significant other not by choice or to score some points. I'm sure you'll look more studly inside the Forever 21 at Serramonte across the street or the For Love 21 store where all the young hipstresses hang out. If you're not out to impress a date, you'll look like a total anime dork by being in there. -1 star because Daiso is Daisofuckingcheapass on the service, and you have to bag your own purchases. They give you a plastic bag, charge you for your payments and send you towards the bench by the window (yes again, bagging is SELF SERVICE). Perhaps this is to save time to move the lines, but c'mon, open up two more registers (they only had 2 open out of 4). Is that so hard to do? It's like a Japanese version of your local dollar store but better. You can definitely buy what you need for less than what you'd pay at Target. This place is awesome. Sooooo awesome. When I walked in I thought this store was filled with a bunch of junk at cheap prices. But after perusing the aisles, I found all these things that I wanted to buy or had thought to buy at extremely higher prices! I was lucky enough to find some storage racks for $1.50 each!!!!! What a steal!!! I had saved a ton of money compared to what I would have paid at Bed Bath and Beyond! They have all sorts of storage accessories, kitchen accessories/utensils, cookware storage, cups, dishes, refrigerator stuff, laundry stuff, Japanese snacks, and so much more! Ever get those urges to just shop for knick knacks? Here's the spot for you, the space once occupied a Circuit City, and before that a Pizza and Pipes. It seems mall culture dies and revives itself say every 10 or 15 years. This store being detached from the mall has to work a little harder to pull in the clients, from the folks standing out in parking lot holding up arrows pointing to the locale, Diaso Daly City does just that! All unmarked items are $1.50. Daiso is like your dollar store meets the plastic toy manufacturing plant, meets the plastic hardware store, meets the chach-ki collectors playground. This place is similar to the Ichiban Kan in Japantown, but on a much more larger scale. They've got some great storage bin ideas if you decide to be anal and say rearrange your closet space, cupboards or underneath your bed. There's tons of questionable items you'll pick up and say "What the hell is this for?" Mostly everything is labeled in Japaneese...you've gotta think innovative as they do and figure out a use for it. Disposable? Eh it's a buck fifty... if your findings don't work out they can go straight to that goodwill pile you know you posses in the corner of your room... or you can check into a pack rats anonymous support group. It's Yelp Review Block. Since I came back from a month-long biz trip, I've basked happily in the familiar and delighted in the routine -- perfectly content to stay in my nest. Nice, but not so good for Yelp reviews. A review of "Daiso" in Daly City is a comfortable way to ease back into the fray. If you enjoy spending an hour perusing aisles of products mostly priced at $1.50 whose functionality rating can vary wildly between: - "Whoa, I really need this!" (acrylic, transparent shelf liners for wire shelving racks); to - "My niece will love this!" (gel, multi-color stick-ons for windows and mirrors - shapes including stars, geometric, flowers); to - "What a great deal!" (stationery, notebooks, folders, wire cooking spiders, other small cooking tools, ceramic bowls and small plates); to - "TOTALLY useless but I MUST have this!" (any number of things); to - "Eh, not for me" (myriad plastic containers) ... then Daiso is an excellent field trip for you. read more

What can I say? Daiso is LOVE. They have one of the biggest selections of cheap things I've come across. As much as I love Ichiban Kan, it's just no comparison to Daiso. I cannot leave this store without buying something. They've got sections for beauty, stationary, cookware, knick-knacks, garden/pets, and "plastics". This last section is by far my favorite. What's not to love? Most items are $1.50 so you don't feel bad when doesn't live up to your expectation or becomes junk that just sits in the corner of your room. It's basically a higher quality version of the american dollar thrift stores. I find this location better than the others as there is ample parking and the store is a decent size with a good selection. I always browse all the aisles to see what I needed to pick up but was never important enough to write down & lo and behold you will find it. From plastic boobs as gag gifts to chopping knives, makeup sponges, fabric toilet covers, batteries & much more. Who in the right mind would not LOVE this store? But beware once you find something you can't live without you might not see it the next few times you are there, so stock up as shipments for the same items seems spotty. Once it does come back in stock after your failed 6x repurchase attempt you will see it pop up everywhere. So it's definitely a love hate relationship, sorta like Rihanna and CB. Opies did I go too far?? Anyways be prepared to come out with at least 10 more items than you originally intended to shop for. Cute little store. Ecerything here is $1.50 unless stated otherwise. I get carried away sometimes because everything is so cheap! I just want to buy everything! But you get for what you pay for. I bought candles here the other day, and they are horrible. They stay lit for about twn minutes then burn out. There is no aroma or anything from the candle. But I guess it was just 1.50 that I wasted. Oh well. Lesson learned. i will be writing this review from the point of a former employee as well as a customer -- i am trying NOT to be biased. (note: i already said TRYING.) so. daiso. i have tried to restrain myself from writing any type of review about this place so i don't end up sounding biased. but, alas, i find myself bored on a saturday night, putting off homework for my sociology class. i decided to finally write a review. from the former employee's point of view: daiso sucks. underpaid, under-appreciated, ugly, and ultra crazy. the four terrible u's. certain coworkers will stab you behind the back, rumors float around, and you'll do backbreaking work for only 8 dollars an hour. (don't worry, you'll get a 30 cent raise every 3 months -- SUPPOSEDLY. i know i didn't.) if you're a girl, watch out, they're kind of sexist too. maybe they've changed their slave-like conditions since i've worked there, who knows? if they did, i sure can't tell the difference in all the scared/pissed/tired faces i see when i walk into the store every couple of months to pick up something. bottom line: you might even have a better time working at mcdonalds. from the customer's point of view: it's okay. i kind of think the stationary is overpriced -- a couple of sheets of paper for 1.50? no thanks. the plastic containers are kind of useful, i guess. just remember to get the microwaveable kind. stay away from the bowls, because some of them have lead in it. and the food? you can get some of that stuff in chinatown for waaaay cheaper than 1.50. air fresheners are useful. the kitchen stuff is pretty useful too. ehhh. this review sucked. haha. read more

Oh, Daiso. You have everything that I never knew I needed. Bear shaped bathroom sponges? $2 fake eyelashes? Tabo (shower buckets) in blue, pink AND yellow? Yes, please! I came away with: - eye make-up remover wipes - face make-up remover wipes - clear storage for my eyeshadow pallets - makeup bags - mini mandolin (surprisingly sharp. Great for garlic) - face masks (the sort that go over your mouth & nose) - one of those rough bath wash cloths that exfoliate ... and I can't really remember what else. At $1.50 - $3.00 a pop, I wasn't expecting much quality wise but I am pleasantly surprised at how well everything works (definitely going to stock up on the eye make up remover wipes). No worries if the line is long, the cashiers move QUICKLY and were actually having a contest (who could cut down the line the quickest) when we were there. read more

I heart Daiso. I feel fulfilled...well, in that superficial heady woozy way that will last for a good part of the day. Everything you never dreamed you wanted for $1.50. Those cute little Japanese towels with traditional stylized patterns of waves, purple flowers, or the cutest little Japanese dolls. And also multiple cheap Japanese dolls (not on towels). Hmmm, and processed packaged Japanese snacks that I started eating immediately in the parking lot. Oh, yeah, and that small one-hand sized rolling pin that is perfect for making mandoo wrappers. Japanese games made out of wood. Stickers to bring out the 9 year old in me. Plastic bento in the shape of panda bears. Little plastic molds to make onigiri in the shape of hearts, stars, what have you. I think I spent about 3 hours here. Two minor complaints: Please have the cookbooks translated into English. I really want to learn how to make those jelly rolls that my mother always refused to buy for me. Sure, the tupperware is cheap, but most of them don't have tight lids...hence, making the tupperware useless. But, otherwise, it's near perfect consumer bliss. read more

So much better than the Daiso in Japantown, plus parking here is free. I need free parking because my girlfriend can spend a hour or two in this store alone. Most amusing items I ever found in Daiso is the white Men's underwear that comes in a pack of five for $1.50. Don't think you can find a better deal for underwear. Daiso does have a huge selection of kitchen, bathroom, and storage containers. When they first opened their selection of dog toys and items was larger but still has a pretty good selection. If you come here just looking to buy one thing, chances are that you will walk out with five items or more unless you have some serious self-control. I think cute is the word that I would use to describe this place. Everything is so cute! They have pretty much everything you can imagine from kitchen stuff to gift wrap, little storage containers, make up, school supplies, asian snacks, random trinklets and so much more! Everything is only $1.50 (plus tax) so it is so easy to grab everything that you want. I constantly keep asking myself if I really NEED it. 95% of the time its a no. The store is huge. I could literally browse for hours! Since the price is so low, don't expect the best quality of anything, but it is of decent quality. Overall, I would be a total hoarder of this stuff if I had no self control. I love this store! I think I could spend a good amount of hours in here just perusing the aisles, looking at every single item, figuring out what crazy invention this is and what it does, etc. This is a comparable to a Dollar Tree Store, but has way more cooler stuff. It has loads of Japanese tea cups, plates, chopsticks. They even have bento boxes which I'm a huge fan of for my to-go lunches at work. They have a kick ass tupperware section. The cutest cupcake paper holders. I could go on and on about this place. The best part? Most of the stuff is like $1.50. Great for White Elephant gifts. You'll please the receiver. Trust me! They'll love their gift of Japanese tea cups and think that you spent a hefty grip on them, when in fact you spent a mere $5. I wished that there was one of these stores alot more closer to me. Cheap, but practical items that don't break within a week (well most). I went crazy when I was in Japan and was thrilled when they opened locations in the states. There are things that you never even think about until you've strolled through the aisles of Daiso. I love their food section (yummy pocky sticks, hi-chew, soba, etc). I also love how practical their items are (i.e. soup spoons with a hinge to prevent it from sinking into your soups). My favorite section is the kitchenware section. I went crazy on cookie cutters, cake molds, etc. They also have cute dishes! Even though it's only $1.50, it can add up! To be honest, I spend most of my time at Daiso in the parking lot. Y'see, maybe it's just me, but there's a pervasive, overwhelming smell of plastic that wafts throughout the building that ends up giving me a headache if I spend too much time in there. Oh yeah, there's a perfectly good reason for that. Daiso sells a lot of cheap plastic goods. I spent some time in Japan a couple of years ago where I got to go to some really fantastic stores like Tokyo Hands and Loft. They have a great selection of home goods, furniture, and just about everything else you could think of. Like a cross between Ikea and Crate & Barrel. Daiso is nothing like that at all. Daiso is the 99 cent store of Japanese stores. I think you'd be better off going to Ichiban Kan over in the Tanforan mall. It's a much smaller store, but I think it has a much better selection and the atmosphere is much more airy and not so plastic-y. BUT, if you really need some erasers and fake eyelashes and poorly made bento boxes, Daiso might just be the place for you. read more

Daiso, I go to you because Made in USA/China products absolutely suck big time, there is ZERO value in buying something that is going to break within the first hour or two of use {SMH} I may be a bit bitter ever since IchiBan Kan left DTSM, but the hubby and I do frequent Daiso for the usual Japanese dollar store sundries. Face mask, sure... better than paying $12 @ Marina Market or Ranch99. Oyster shucker, why not... it's better than paying $10 for one @ Hog Island. My point is Daiso is the solution to what Asians have a HUGE problem with: Sucky quality and cheap prices (i.e. Dollar Tree). Can we have both? The old detached store seems to be bigger than their new location next to dave n busters..regardless they have the items i need and most of their merchandise are still $1.50..bright ceiling and floors..clean wide aisle and same store policies of no return all sales final..parking can be difficult due to constant construction at the mall and being next to daves and the food court..they replenish their shelves in a timely manner .. read more

My first time at this location store. I think it might be larger than the one in Mountain View? You can spend hours in here just walking through the aisles and checking out all the different stuff they have. I was looking for stationary items as well as kids toys. Succeeded in the stationary department, but there weren't very many kids toys. The only thing I don't like is the "all sales are final" policy. Ended up putting a lot of things back on the shelves because I wasn't really sure I needed a lot of it. It's hard when almost everything is $1.50! read more

After all the Yelp reviews I had great expectations of this place. I thought it was gonna be the Ichiban Kan on steroids. Sadly, *sniff*, not. Well serves me right since why is a guy in a dollar type store anyway? The allure of a good deal, that's why! Like my dad before me, I cannot resist a good deal. I sweat. It's normal. But I sweat buckets when I'm a. nervous, or b. humidity is at 95% and heat is around 90 degrees. Before I went to Malaysia a few years back I tried to prepare myself as best that I could and one of the things that some folks told me to bring was small hand towels to wipe down your forehead if you get too sweaty. I didn't want a full-size one cause that's hard to put in your pocket, so I went to the first place that came to mind: Sanrio. I ended up buying a little towel with the Shinkansen train on it. The women in the office in Malaysia all laughed at me, and made comments that only women use those. I didn't care. It was that little towel, or a dry brow--and them laughing at me in either case. So fast forward a few years later, and enter Daiso. After another scorcher of a day in the South Bay, and a morning in Half Moon Bay, we ended up in the next coolest place on this side of the Golden Gate Bridge: Daly City and the bastion of Filipinos--Serramonte Mall. We decided to get our $1.50 shopping on and go to Daiso. This is a well-laid out store that once was a Good Guys. It seems to be one of the larger locations in the area and seemingly has isles that go on forever. Much to my chagrin, I found a spinner with handkerchiefs and the prized jewel of it all: little hand towels, perfect for those hot, muggy days on the equator. I nearly leaped for joy that while they did have some towels with cutsey Hello Kitty wannabees, they actually had some masculine looking ones (well, as masculine as you can get). I bought three of them, and am stashing them away for that hot, muggy day. read more

Daiso always has a huge selection of little things you never thought you needed. And SO many options. Want a drain cover? Here, choose from 5. Want tupperware? We have 100 kinds! As a very indecisive shopper, the amount of choices the store offers is sometimes a bit painful to deal with. However, I do enjoy their baking section--cute cupcake liners, decorative stencils and gift boxes to give away your prized baked goods. They also have a variety of cheap pans for the rare occasion that I want to bake a fruity, heart-shaped cake. I'll admit they're not good pans, but I usually toss them after one or two uses. Something I find confusing is that they never mark down their expired food items, let alone label them as expired. I've addressed this issue once and the employee simply told me that the expiration date standards are different in Japan. We're big and American but how different can our standards be? read more

Daiso Japan sells absolutely and almost everything you need. In fact, they probably sell things you didn't know you'd need-- case in point: I purchased mini silicone pot-holders for my fingers, so that I could pull hot plates out of the microwave. So, whether it falls in the category of gardening, kitchen, dining, crafts, bathroom, tacky knick-knacks, basic clothing, whatever, blah blah, I suggest you check this place first. Why? Because the average $1.5 price tag will make you kick yourself in the behind if you pay more elsewhere.. and you probably will.
