This is more of a 3.5 star review and I'll admit that I've craved and had banh mi from many places, not just the bay area...stopped by since I was craving a banh mi and I was over in the area. (*hint, it's not san francisco, cause it's $5 PER sandwich there) Portions: Portions were on the larger side Food: Ended up getting the bbq pork which was "meh" at best, and the grilled pork which was actually very good. The bbq pork had some extra bbq/red sauce with it, which isn't standard from the banh mi's that I'm used to. Not entirely sure what the sauce was but I know it's not "typical" The grilled pork was actually very tasty and is definitely the way to go. Bread here was soft and chewy, but very very very very bread-y. So bread-y that I pretty much tore off 1/3 of the bread so I could actually enjoy the sandwich. Not my thing to like ultra bready french bread, but may be yours? Lastly, came here at a random time on a saturday with no one else in the store. Oh Wow! Yummy, yummy authentic Bahn Mi! And this is after they had run out of their usual bread and had to use a baguette. My stomachg sank after hearing this news but they toasted it up nice and crispy and the sandwiches were delicious. We tried 3. Roast chicken, sardine (a fave of mine) and the vegetarian. Each sandwich only $2.50! Was worth the trip to satisfy our Bahn Mi cravings.! Best little fried eggrolls! They are very flavorful, and they must use real meat. Lately, I have been to a few vietnamese places that basically stuff their eggrolls with taro, but I prefer some meat. Sandwiches (banh mi) hit the spot. Spring rolls were a tad unflavorful. The atmosphere of the restaurant in very casual, and had a some older people there enjoying big bowls of soup. The sandwiches are dirt-cheap here, ranging from $2.50 to $3.25 or so. The sandwiches are slightly smaller, but quite tasty since they add some sauce to it. What really makes Dakao more interesting are the hot foods that they serve. Ranging from Vietnamese-style noodles to rice dishes to porridge. Some of the noodle dishes that they serve are quite unique from other Vietnamese sandwich shops, such as a dry noodle dish with chips. Feeling under the weather due to this annoying cold i can't seem to get rid of, banh canh sounded really yummy. Pulled out my yelp app and was able to find this spot .08 miles away from my office. Score. I called my order in ahead and drove to their shop. Got this spot confused with Huong Lan so i circled around a bit. It's in the plaza with the Swagat if you are ever in the area. My banh can was wrapped and ready for me. Picked it up and took it back to the office and it was PIPING hot. Good flavor, i'm sure it had MSG, and the banh canh was perfectly chewy not overcooked. for $8 and some change, not too shabby. Kudos to them too as the had the AC running. Mmm so good! Sandwhiches range from $2.25 - $2.75. I asked the chick what she recommended and she recommended : #1,2,3,14,15,16. I don't quite remember what all of them were, but they included grilled pork, grilled beef, meatball,..... My family and I ordered Gioi here and told them we were going to pick it up in 15 minutes. We asked them to fry the gioi before we get there. We got there 10 minutes after the call, picked up the Gioi. We suspected that they didn't fry the Gioi so we opened it up in there car to check, to my surprise it was colder than cold. We called them while driving home, I asked "Did you fry the gioi?" She replied, "we just fried it, we put it in the fridge to cool it down that's why it's cold". I have never met a business owner that lie the way this person lied. The Gioi was so cold to the touch like it was left in the fridge all day. She had audacity to tell us that she fried it before we got there and left it in the fridge for it to cool down. I will never ever buy anything here and do not recommend anyone to shop here. If I can give this place a 0 rating I would but unfortunately I have to give them a 1 in order to write this terrible review about this business!!! Oh not to mention, there sandwich is terrible. I love bánh mì. I always crave for it. When I don't know what to eat, give me a bánh mì and I'm happy. Too bad there isn't a good place that makes it in the South Bay. San Jose. In SoCal, it's amazing and cheaper. Maybe there's not a lot of competition up here so people slack off. Anyways, back to Vietnamese sandwiches. I remember seeing a $9 one in mountain view and I couldn't help but laugh. Seriously? What are you using to make it cost that much? This spot here is legit. What's the best part about it? It's only $3! No tax. While other places skimp out on meat, topping, Patê, and etc, this spot give you loaded with meat and extras. The meats are tasty and flavorful. None of that bland, plain tasting ones at other places. I'm sure you had a sandwich that has all bread, veggies and barely any meat when you bite into it. Yes, that's what other places sell. Not here. I frequently go to Vietnam and my wife's parents make roasted pig bánh mì and sell it for 40 cents. It blows away any sandwiches here so far. This review is just for the small sized crab eggrolls. I had not had the eggrolls in such a long time, thought of how much I loved them when I was younger and how delicious and crispy they were. Called at 2:42p to order a small tray and requested they be ready in 15 minutes and the lady said ok. I read other yelp reviews on how the place promises to have food ready and lags. So I arrived about 45 minutes later and there are a bunch of people waiting for party trays. The lady said it would be another 5 minutes. I gave them an extra time as I was annoyed and didn't want to to back in and wait. The eggrolls are now .65 cents each. But to top it off they aren't the same , looks like your typical eggrolls just mini sized. I was expecting them to be wrapped with the rice paper roll which is how I remembered them when I was young and that's what made them "special" and sooooo delicious. Now it's wrapped with just the usual and there is tons of tarp inside as a filler than crab. Those lil suckers were what they were known for and it's gone down hill so much!!! This place has good mini egg rolls but I saw a roach on the counter where the food was laid out after ordering some egg rolls and immediately left! I couldn't even tell the owners b/c I was so grossed out and didn't want to make a scene in front of other customers. The sandwiches have an abundance of filling and are tasty but the problem with the sandwiches is the bread. The bread crust is extremely dry and hard it spoils the whole experience of what could be a very good sandwich. Matter in fact if they just made the sandwiches with freshly baked bread their sandwiches could warrant a 4 star rating at the least. The prices of the sandwiches are exceptionally cheap so they could use fresher bread and charge a little more then it would make it worth it for me to make this one of my regular lunch stops but not the way it is currently. Finally, the cashier could be a little more attentive to the customers. She was gossiping with someone on the phone making me feel like I was interrupting her so made me hesitant on making any requests or even whether or not I could place my order since she never acknowledged my presence, so after waiting a bit and noticing she wasn't in any hurry to get off the phone, I just called out to her my order. How rude can you be to a customer.....? Needless to say, I won't be back. I feel i am being generous with rafting this place a 3 star because with combination of the lack of proper service and the sandwich is should rate 2 star. Good vietnamese sandwiches with lower prices than Lee's. Def. what I'd call a hole in the wall. Not the cleanest place, but it is convenient & fast. Cashiers are quick & friendly. Full menu of items including bun thit nuong, com bo luc lac and com tam bi. There are pick & go items like cha gio and gio cuon. They also sell soft tofu w/ginger syrup. Picked up some cha (pretty bland) and $1 worth of rice to fry. Stick to the sandwiches here & go to South SJ for your cha. read more

As far as Banh Mi sandwiches go, this place is pretty good. Had the grilled pork sandwich - fresh bun and ingredients (love the raw sliced jalapeno pepper). Brings back memories of my college days in San Jose State and the Dakao location near the campus. I tried out their shrimp and crab egg rolls fresh out of the fryer, and they were pretty tasty (only $0.40 each). Got away with $5 for lunch and bought some coconut mochi to go (also pretty good)! I'm working near by, and have been craving banh mi... after talking with Vi Y. about it... so I had to find one near me (that wasn't a Lee's) anyway... they have a variety of Banh Mi and you can even get combinations (like today i got Thit nguoi / Ham with Cha /viet pork). the banh mi range from 2.25-2.75. not bad in price. the bread though, was not fresh... after holding the sandwich in my hands, parts of the bread just crunched and started falling away... :T Not cute for the work clothes. sad face! The meat, pate, sour stuff was all mediocre... and the jalapeno peppers inside were not spicy! super sad face... (this MIGHT be better if you bring the sandwich home, and toast it in the oven or toaster oven... but for a quick to-go lunch, we all can't do that... it should be fresh to begin with...) I also got an egg roll... it was crispy and non greasy (yay!) but then the insides had no flavor, boo... Internal sandwich ingredients were substandard also -- the thit nguoi meat was flavorless as was the headcheese. The old man at the counter was hardly friendly, and upsold some eggrolls on me. My total came out to $7 even, so I gave him a $10...from which he handed me back $2. I was like, didn't you say $7?
