The decor was okay. Typical upscale steakhouse vibes. Our server was fantastic and easily the highlight of the experience. The sommelier, however, lacked personality and didn't add much to the dining experience. A friend of mine had just arrived in town and wanted something upscale, but we were short on time, so this seemed like a convenient choice. We started with the chicken nugget topped with caviar, which was ehh nothing memorable. While discussing cocktails, I learned they use bottled juice rather than fresh juice. As someone who appreciates well-crafted cocktails, that was disappointing from the start. I ordered a classic margarita, sparkling water with lime, and the tuna tartare. The margarita was just average, but the tuna tartare was excellent. The flavors worked beautifully together, although I'd recommend trying it without the apples. I would genuinely love to know who curated the menu because there were moments of creativity that showed promise. After speaking with the manager, who did his best to connect with us, he explained that fresh juice in cocktails isn't something their clientele typically requests. Initially, I was shocked, but life has taught me that having money doesn't always mean having discerning taste or an appreciation for quality. That's exactly why I usually gravitate toward niche restaurants places that prioritize fresh, seasonal ingredients and thoughtfully crafted cocktails. Too often, people mistake expensive decor for a quality experience. I hate spending money on an experience that looks impressive but falls short where it matters most. I've lived in Dallas for years and somehow never made it to Dakota's Steakhouse. Safe to say I've been missing out. If you go, do yourself a favor and get the 4-course tasting menu. It was more food than we could eat, and we still took plenty of leftovers home. Every course was fantastic, but the standouts for us were the tater tots, deviled eggs, chicken nugget, porterhouse, and tiramisu cheesecake. Honestly though, everything was amazing. It's tucked underground, so you actually take an elevator down to get there (don't worry, there's stairs if elevators aren't your thing). From the moment you walk in, it feels private and elevated--perfect lighting, great music, and an overall vibe that just tells you you're in the right place for a good time. Service was solid across the board, but let's get to the real highlight: the food. The filet mignon was top-tier--great quality and cooked perfectly. But the standout of the night? The Wagyu dumplings. Easily the best appetizer on the table. And the sauce... next level. Everyone loved it so much we ended up ordering extra just to have with our mains. Sides did not miss either. The loaded mashed potatoes were incredibly smooth and rich--exactly what you want. Brussels sprouts were on point with great flavor and bacon. I had a late dinner at 9 PM on Memorial Day and the host and staff were incredibly friendly to welcome us (even though it was late). We had great service all night and the ambience was relaxing with the waterfall outside. The crabcake lollipops were a favorite, the chicken was perfectly cooked and the cream spinach with some of the best I've ever had. The fried rice and the whipped potatoes were also great. My cosmopolitan was perfectly balanced and nice and strong. We had a party of six and everybody enjoyed their food and the experience. This was our first time visiting Dakota's steakhouse and we cannot wait to go back. read more

Our waiter was amazing and the owner came by our table several times checking on the service and food that we had. The server recommended us some delicious appetizer that left me wanting more. I still think about the mash potatoes till this day. It's a steakhouse so of course we have to get steak. When they bring out the steak, they want you to cut it infront of them to make sure it is to your liking. While I'm unsure what happens if you don't like it, I loved mine. Took my boyfriend to Dakota's for his 34th birthday after hearing great things from coworkers & learning about the underground waterfall and unique downstairs elevator experience. I made a reservation in advance and requested seating near the waterfall if possible. We were seated quickly, but the seating process was a bit chaotic, we were first placed right next to another couple in an otherwise mostly empty room, then moved to a half-circle booth, and finally relocated again next to the waterfall area. We were told the seating request had been noted, but the waterfall feature wasn't even running that evening, which was disappointing given the expectation. Service throughout the meal was fine but not particularly memorable, especially considering the price point and reputation. For entrees, we ordered the tomahawk steak and lamb chops, which were both solid and what you'd expect from a high-end Dallas steakhouse. Unfortunately, the experience around the meal overshadowed the food itself. With so many strong steakhouse options in Dallas, I'd personally try out Al Biernat's, Nick & Sam's, or STK Steakhouse instead. read more

We took my cousins here and this was their first time here. They were very impressed. We started out with the tater tots, not just tater tots but tater tots oozing with white cheddar cheesy goodness. We ordered a dozen oysters and asked what size they were and our waiter said medium! The only disappointment of the night. We corrected him and said they're small to tiny!!! We also ordered the tartare cannolis! So so good! We ended up ordering more! Oh and something different that Dakotas does is you order appetizers by the piece. They have an extensive wine list also. Hubby and me split the Cowboy Ribeye. Cooked absolutely perfect! Melt in your mouth. My cousins split the New York Strip. Cooked perfectly. They said one of the best steaks they've ever had. Wife and I came out for a special occasion. It's a fantastic location, heart of downtown but a subterranean restaurant that you take an elevator to. Wish we sat next to the water feature, we were in the middle of the main walkway. Staff were very respectful but it was a lot of foot traffic by us which does take away some of the ambience. We did enjoy our food, had a wide range of apps, main entrees and deserts We enjoyed the experience but not sure we'll rush back. We were excited to try this restaurant for my husband's birthday since it was one of the few steakhouses we hadn't been to and our son -- who goes there frequently -- had great things to say about it. We requested to sit outside to enjoy the water feature, but unfortunately, the patio was weatherproofed that night, so we didn't get to experience the outdoor atmosphere we were hoping for. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, but it tasted sour. I mentioned this to our waiter, who quickly tried to dismiss it. My husband tasted it as well and agreed that it seemed like the bottle had been open too long and had gone bad. The waiter again brushed it off and started to walk away, and I had to stop him to explain that I couldn't drink it. He reluctantly took it back. Overall, the food was good, but the wine experience and service left something to be desired. Underground steakhouse in the middle of Dallas. The service is really attentive and kind. We both got filets which were nice along with the broccolini, risotto, and fries to share. The risotto was both of our favorites for sure. For dessert we got an ice cream sundae which was explained to us like a kid threw it together and that's basically what it is, but super good nonetheless. One thing I didn't love was that when we were asked if we were done with our main plates, they took all of our sides away as well, which we still had quite a bit left of each one. It took us a minute to realize that we were in fact not getting to take them home, and when the sides aren't cheap that's pretty disappointing. Valet is available right in front of the restaurant which you can't miss. They'll "validate" it at your table. read more

A very memorable dinner at Dakota's. It is a classic Dallas establishment that I have been meaning to check out. what's unique about this restaurant is that you can only see their elevator above ground, the whole dining room is underground next to water fountains. Tried the crab cake appetizer, ribeye, Kansas city strip, creamed spinach, and Mac and cheese as sides. I really loved the ribeye, with a really nice crust and huge portion. I could only finish 1/3 of it. The mac and cheese was really heavy. I think i prefer the one at Eddie V's a little more but it was still nice. Service was attentive but not overwhelming. I often judge a restaurant by the bread they offer and this one definitely has top notch bread!!! The green salad was fresh and tasty. The Smoked Prime Ribs were cooked just right and very tasty. The sides were amazing - loved their mashed potatoes and spinach; the glazed carrots were amazing. We visited for the first time on a Saturday night . To my surprise, the restaurant was fairly empty. Nonetheless I was so glad I chose this place. The service & ambiance were great, however the food was even better. We both ordered rib-eye, Mac & cheese, loaded mashed potatoes, and truffle fries (not pictured). The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because I didn't like the fact that every condiment that could be paired with the steak was an extra charge. Given that this is a steak sauce, I think the steak sauce should be complimentary. The birthday cake was complimentary & was also amazing! Warming they are very big so do not get 1 side per person, it is more of a sharing with the table format. We got the fries (best fries in the world), loved the au grantin potatoes, brussel sprouts, and Mac and cheese. For appetizers, we got the calamari and crab claws which came with the most amazing sauce. It had citrus in it that complemented the crab very well. The steaks, on the other hand, did not meet up to my expectation. It was not seasoned that well. However it was cooked very well. The sides paired well with the steak. I tried the apple martini which surprisingly was very good. I like that. It wasn't too sweet. We also tried a bunch of different things like the oysters, calamari, lobster roll, and chicken nuggets with caviar. We were still a little hungry so we opted to try the lobster mac & cheese. The highlights for me were definitely in the mac & cheese and chicken nuggets (perfect kid's meal lol). Steakhouse Review #5: Dakota's. Made a reservation for 7:30 on a Saturday. Not sure how parking is because we got a ride, but it's downtown so I'm assuming it's not the easiest. When you arrive, there's an elevator that takes you down to get into the underground restaurant. Fun! The look and atmosphere was just swanky enough with a classic flair that included a waterfall. It's one of my favorite vibes we've had thus far...not too noisy, not too pretentious, and just the right amount of special. We were seated right away and ordered a blackberry mule. It was tart and sweet and so good. Our service was good but not spectacular, no complaints. Ordered two famous tator tots for an app and they almost made me cry they were so good! They are $5 a pop and so worth it. Our main meal was a filet, mac & cheese, cacio y pepe risotto, carrots, and mashed potatoes. The steak was the best we've had thus far and was tender, mildly smoky, and perfectly seasoned. Divine. Now, the sides were where we were reallllllly let down. The mac (bland with no distinct flavor) and mashers (gummy and bland) just weren't good, the carrots were basic, and the risotto had promise and was actually fairly decent with a parmesan and black pepper accent. It was my birthday (they had a cute little birthday card on the table which was appreciated) and brought out a dessert but it was two chunks of frozen cheesecake and was not bangin. One of these places will eventually knock our socks off on all levels, but this wasn't the one, though the steak itself was supurb. Overall, we probably wouldn't go back but glad we got to experience it. The meal was $160 and we tipped $50 for a total if $210.
