I've never been to Damascus, but I've been to other major bustling cities like Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Amman, and Aqaba where cozy, crowded cafes thrive without issue. This cafe had almost the exact same chaotic vibe. The moment Jamie W and I walked in, we couldn't tell how to get to the order counter in the back because a group of constantly chatty senior women sat at a table in the middle. They were blocking access to anyone daring to pass behind them. In fact, people were forced to ask others to shift their chairs to make way. Otherwise the decor had an artificial floral motif with bookcases that shook when leaned upon as we saw one customer experience. We had limited time because we were waiting for the next AC bus to Berkeley, so we scrunched ourselves to get to the counter. Jamie ordered the $5.25 Iced Latte and the $3.50 Baklava (Photo 10), while I took it a step further by getting the $6.25 Iced Pistachio Latte (Photo 9) and the $4.50 Warbat, similar to baklava but with a clotted cream filling (Photo 8). All of it was tasty with authentic Syrian-originated flavors, well worth the stop. Just be mindful that the evocative cacophony is real and an innate part of the ambiance. This is so good it's spinach and walnuts, sesame crust little lemon juice, superb!

Excellent, Spinach Flatbread (Mana'eesh) $14.40 Flatbread topped with spinach, onions, and typically includes a blend of herbs and spices. Some very creative sweets, maybe a little too sweet for some, but beautifully presented. A lot of emphasis on pistachio. They have a variety of nice espresso drinks, and even rose latte and rose lemonade. A lovely spot with great staff and a very peaceful environment, unless you are allergic to plastic flowers. There's plenty of them hanging from the walls and ceiling. The vegetarian items are epic. The hummus is delicious with olive oil sitting on top. There's sort of a deli case and you can get a variety of items to take home. The desserts are off the hook. They have many with nuts, flaky crust, and pistachio that are just simply divine. I suggest grabbing a box of goodies to take home, or take to the office because they're so unique. IE: Warbat is a sweet pastry filled with cream or cheese, often garnished with powdered sugar, typically served as a delightful treat Check out these pictures.....

I got an espresso. It was a med/dark roast with a thin layer of crema and medium body. I tasted dark chocolate bitterness and very mild acidity. The shot wasn't burnt but there wasn't much nuance in the flavor or texture. 2.5/5.

This place is a hidden gem . A small hole in the wall on a busy street but 100% legit . I got the Turkish coffee which was easily top 5 best Turkish coffees . This also came in such a nice fancy set of dishes . I also got the muhamara mankish which was just excellent . Such a perfect crisp dough . Incredible . Can't wait to come back to try out more things !

This was such a cute little coffee shop. We stopped by for a quick to-go drink before heading to an event. The cafe is beautifully decorated and very Instagrammable. The owner greeted us warmly and took our orders. I ended up ordering the iced rose latte ($5.25) and it came out beautiful with the rose at the bottom, milk in the middle, and espresso on top and tasted delicious once I mixed it all together. I snapped a few photos and we took our drinks to go, but this would be a great cafe to hang out in. They also had a great selection of snacks and desserts. They were beautiful. So glad we stopped by this spot for a quick coffee.

I came back and ordered a rose latte, which was $6.25. It was done within a few minutes. I like that you can taste the rose flavor, as I personally prefer the flavored part of flavored coffee to come out strong. They made some cute latte art too. I just wish the cup was bigger for the price. They also sell chai (kashmiri or masala style), matcha, and pistachio lattes so I'd like to come back and try some of these other drinks. The bathroom has pretty pink painted walls and roses around the mirror, I appreciate their commitment to the aesthetic. They still usually keep two small outdoor tables right outside the shop.

I love the aesthetic of this cafe! Pink walls with white chairs and tables and LOTS of greenery and artificial flowers everywhere. Don't let that scare you from coming. It's a very welcoming environment, and I can see myself spending an afternoon working here. Got a chai cup, rose latte, and a regular latte. The chai was creamy, and the fruit was a nice contrast. The rose latte was unique. I have tried other floral lattes before but never rose. Not quite as floral as I was expecting, but it was a nice surprise. I will say it is better than the regular latte. The regular latte tasted a bit watered down. Average latte at the normal east bay price point. Would come back to try the rose lemonade.

Super cute cafe right at the border of Oakland and Berkeley. I came by Friday afternoon around 2 pm and it was pretty empty, but over the course of the time I was here chatting with a friend, it filled up and was completely full at one point. Seems to be a pretty popular spot! The first thing you notice when you step in is that it's beautifully decorated with flowers on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. Definitely a girly type of spot. In addition to drinks, they also offer mana'eesh (Mediterranean flatbreads) and other small snacks as well as a large variety of baked goods. I haven't seen some of the pastries before! I got the rose lemonade ($4), which was absolutely beautiful. I liked it because it wasn't as sweet as most lemonades. I also grabbed some baked goodies to go. I wasn't sure what to get, so I got the safe option (baklava) and another item as well. I ate them later for dessert and both were delicious! I definitely want to come back and try more of their baked goods.

I tried Damask Rose a couple of months ago with a close friend after having had this place bookmarked for a while. I felt like it had the perfect amount delicious homemade food and cozy, feminine charm. I'm not much of a tea person, but my friend and I LOVED the Kashmiri chai!! Also these flatbreads were so reasonably priced, delicious, and filling. They're made fresh to order, which is a big draw in my book. And, pro tip: you can order the flatbreads to be half and half (split flavors). And I believe it doesn't cost any extra to split, but I could be wrong. If I lived in the east bay, I'd be here much more often! Can't wait for my next outing here.

Such a lovely little spot! I came by after getting a tattoo nearby and their baklava brought me back to life. It was so delicious, packed with filling and flaky! The birds nest was okay but not nearly as good as the baklava. I wish I got a drink too but I had already had my coffee for the day, but my friend did get a coffee here and loved it. The workers here were sweet and friendly. It truly feels like a gem of a neighborhood spot!

I brought a Lebanese friend with me and she was delighted. "I have driven past and keep meaning to stop. I definitely will make sure to stop from now on." We had amazing chai - Kashmiri and Masala versions - at the Damask Rose Coffee near the Berkeley Bowl on Shattuck. We also sampled date mahwa and nougats, several of which are gluten free. The cafe is owned and run by Syrian women, and their service is warm and on point. We will definitely be back.

Really enjoyed our visit here! The women running it are friendly, and they have thought of everything - great Wi-Fi, power outlets at every seat, and super comfortable chairs. We saw many folks enjoying a nice latte with their laptops out working. They have a variety of lattes including rose and pistachio as well as many types of Syrian pastries. We went with the rose latte and lamb flatbread. I absolutely loved the rose latte - the rose didn't overpower and it was not too sweet. The lamb flatbread was delicious and filled with meat - the flavor profile was on point! The interior is Instagram worthy! There were gorgeous pink faux-flowers everywhere. They have both outdoor and indoor seating and parking was street parking - wasn't hard for us to find a spot at the time. Overall, loved this spot and can't wait to come back to try the pistachio latte!

The cafe is small but there are always seats available. Love love loved my rose latte with almond milk, lentil soup and cheese flat bread. Will absolutely be back soon!

I came here on a Wednesday afternoon, and I really liked the ambiance. There are flowers and vines hanging around the walls, and the vibes are very welcoming. I thought the drinks were just OK. They use the store bought Monin brand rose syrup for their rose lattes and rose lemonades. I wish they made their own syrups because rose is such a beautiful and unique flavor. read more

This place looks really nice via Yelp however it is not clean at all. I tried to make myself comfortable and give the place a try however I left feeling uncomfortable. Cleanliness should be mandatory and not an option. I would not recommend coming here. read more

I had good fourtune to stop in here with my soon to be sweetheart and we were blessed with a wonderful experience. Staff here are so friendly and sensitive that we didn't feel like we were at all crowded, but it was a busy morning there. We shared a transcendent lentil soup which they served with a half lemon that just made it pop and had us both tingling from the neck on up !!! I stopped by this beautiful shop for a quick coffee and treat for the first time a few days ago. The interior is decorated really thoughtfully with flowers and roses all over- the ambience really won me over. As for the coffee, I ordered a large iced rose latte with oat milk and it was delicious. They unfortunately can only make the iced latte in a large so I felt it was a little expensive but quite good. I also got a vegan pistachio Turkish delight. I think one of the non-vegan chocolate ones would be better but it was a nice chewy sweet treat. Customer service was also patient, kind, and quick. As soon as I walked inside, I immediately fell in love w/the floral decor, shelf full of books and the counter full of pastries that gave the cafe a warm, welcoming vibe. The matcha latte w/oat milk might be the best I've ever had and the baked goods we tried (baklava, pistachio birds nest and chocolate croissant) were all delicious. My friend and I stayed so long that a second breakfast was in order so we got some of the Mediterranean flatbreads and the rose lemonade, a tasty and very instagrammable drink thanks to the real flower petals on top. The flatbread with ground lamb was my favorite; it was hard not to eat it all myself! read more

a must visit! Whether you get rose or the plain latte, the coffee quality is really good. They also offer both oat and almond milk, which is always a plus. I have tried almost one of everything on the menu, including both the sweets and savory things they offer and they all have been really delicious and with the perfect portion sizes. Super cute decor (faux flowers covering ceiling & walls), my matcha latte was perfect, & we enjoyed the great selection of middle eastern pastries (& savory flatbread covered in zatar). Damask Rose Coffee is such a cute coffee shop. The entire inside is designed to look like garden and it is an extremely relaxing and quiet place to sit down and study for several hours. What a delight to have stumbled upon this wonderful cafe today. I needed to take the car in, had time to walk around locally, and saw this pretty cafe and decided to order lunch. Love the decor, love the baklava, love my POC sisters running this place. Did not love the matcha latte, was very strong and off-putting. I never had a bad matcha in my life..not sure if damask makes it different or if it was an off day. Will be back to confirm. read more

A slice of the middle east joins a fun section of Shattuck Ave near La Pena, the Starry Plough Irish Pub, and Nick's Pizza (yum!). Enjoyed the house-made flat bread slathered with za'atar on my first visit. Then returned for house-made humus, and also babaganoush with sumac. I love this new addition to our neighborhood ! It's beautiful on the inside, with pink decked out everywhere and flowers for days... We came inside to study when our power was out today. As a Lebanese American, I had been wanting to visit this cafe since it opened to see what all the fuss was about. I was eager to find a place that had authentic Middle Eastern food, baked goods, and tasty drinks. This place definitely fits the bill. Their rose latte was absolutely delightful and had just the right amount of rose without being overpowering. It was luscious and creamy, perfect for a cold autumn evening. The dolmas, or waranab, were lemony and perfectly wrapped, reminding me of my grandmother's waranab. As for the hummus, it was super delicious and had just the right amount of lemon, salt, olive oil, and tahini. I can't wait to try their mana'eesh and pastries next! They have a number of creative coffee drinks featuring Middle Eastern/Persian/Turkish flavors such as rose, cardomom, and ginger. These unique flavors make for tasty coffee treats. The pastries and food (light, healthy fare) are all excellent and fresh. If you're looking for a spot with simple, fresh food, tasty drinks and a calming community atmosphere reminiscent of a European cafe please check this place out any time you're in the area. You won't be disappointed. 10/10 recommend.

It's the kind of place where you can settle in with a coffee, study for a few hours, catch up with a friend, or simply enjoy a slower pace for a little while. Found UQBAR on Yelp. It was bustling but tables opened up outside after I ordered. I did have to wait for a minute or two until the tables were bussed & wiped clean. I ordered the half soup and half sandwich which cost about $15. A surprisingly reasonable price. The mushroom soup was thick and the best I've had in a while. The lamb sandwich was succulent and melted in my mouth. I also ordered their milkshake which is made with coconut milk and a berry which name I don't remember right now. The shake was a nice chilling treat on a sunny day after a week of overcast days. Of course, I enjoyed sunbathing over my leisurely lunch. The only glitch was somehow my order got misplaced. After a long wait, I brought it to the attention of Benjamin the owner and order taker. It turned out that my order somehow got lost on a bustling morning. But Benjamin made good by offering me a full sandwich. It was the best lamb sandwich I've had in Berkeley for a while. Benjamin is a very nice person and didn't try to disguise or excuse the glitch. As I told him, the lamb sandwich was well worth the wait, especially since I was hungry when I first ordered and much much more hungrier because of the wait! To be fair, even in Berkeley venues I've frequented for a long time, this does happen once in a while when things are busy. But from what I can see the staff of UQBAR are typically OTJ. I'll be back to my new fave Berkeley lunch spot. Oh, it was easy parking on a Saturday.

Their hours are convenient, making it easy to stop by throughout the day. The only area where I think there's room for improvement is cleanliness. I've noticed on several occasions that when I arrive shortly after opening--sometimes within 30 minutes to an hour--there are still crumbs on the chairs, tables, and floor, even when there haven't been many customers yet. First impressions matter, and the café should be fully cleaned and ready for guests before the doors open. Customers shouldn't have to wipe down their own tables before sitting. Overall, I really enjoy coming here and would absolutely recommend it for the atmosphere, Wi-Fi, seating, and food options. With a little more attention to cleanliness before opening each day, it would be an even better experience.

I think this is a good place to go and take pictures or for events, but if you're going for the food or coffee, there's much better cafes around.

Kopi Bar is open to the public and is on the second floor of the museum. They have a lot of seating reaching into the museum but they also have a very nice lounge area next to the bar with 4 comfortable leather lounge chairs. The lounge area is cantilevered above the street. On either side of the lounge are floor-to-ceiling windows looking onto the street below and facing each window is a high counter with bar stools. Sitting on the bar stools you have a nice view toward campus on one side and downtown Berkeley on the other. Kopi Bar is a Malaysian style cafe and bakery. They do have a simple breakfast and lunch menu, but are best known for their southeast Asian influenced pastries and specialty drinks. Among the lunch options, the seafood Laksa noodle and Malaysian chicken rice are the standouts, but my kids wanted red meat so we went across the street to eat beef noodles and then came back to Kopi Bar for dessert and their specialty coffee drinks. The staff were super friendly and made the effort to remember my name so I was impressed that they really want customers to have a good experience. I ordered the Kopi Avocado, blue tea pea lemonade, pandan coconut swirl, chocolate babka, and a specialty iced Kopi with pandan cream and soft boba. The drinks were really unique and refreshing. For the Kopi Avocado, you have to make sure to mix it well so you can taste the smoothness. We enjoyed the pastries as well and they complement the drinks. I think Kopi Bar make such a nice addition to the BAMPFA experience, but we plan to come back with friends.
