In the area and wanted to try this spot. Wow, super delicious and fast. Not a very long wait time to be seated. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Once seated, everything moved really fast. Our food came out super quick and piping hot and fresh. The fried rice seemed like it was steamed and not really fried, it was good. The scallion pancakes were our favorite I suggest ordering 2 orders, they are delicious. Another favorite was the pickled cucumbers..super flavorful and crunchy. We also had dumplings,and matcha. been to 2nd and pch multiple times, but this is my first time coming to dan modern chinese. went inside the restaurant and was immediately greeted and sat. the decor also lives up to its name, very modern haha. once sat, we were given menus and some sauce trays with ginger. ordering was very simple and food came out fast. throughout the meal, the servers are pretty accommodating and nice, they checked in with us a couple times to see if there was anything we needed. now time for a short food review ! dan mein short rib : (3/5) - noodles were bouncy and thicc with a flavorful sauce. there was also a good noodle to meat ratio, but a bit expensive considering the overall size and price. string beans : (4.5/5) - could be comparable to the dish at din tai fung. it is simple, flavorful, and very garlicky. however, it could be a bit too salty for some. crispy veg dumplings : (5/5) - LOVED THE CRUNCH ! the crispy dumplings were the best and there was lots of filling. it tasted a bit like floral, but that could be because of the veggies. there is also a bit of hoisin (?) sauce on the side, but i liked dipping it in the vinegar (?) sauce. delicious. sesame noodles : (3/5) - very very small portion size, but kind of expected due to rising costs. noodles were a decent texture, though there is not enough sauce. pork and shrimp xlb : (4/5) - the wrappers on the xlb were just right and the soup was very juicy, but nothing really stood out. overall, the food could be a bit pricy, but it was delicious and i would return if i was in the area craving modern chinese. read more

Attentive service. The dishes all came out fairly quickly. The Dan Short Rib is a 100% must have here at Dan! Forget family style. I want this dish all to myself. The Green Beans were prepared perfectly. Crispy, not soggy or mushy. Lightly seasoned (garlicky.) The Mapo Tofu was a nice dish. Just right spicy. But, I will skip the crab addition next time. Unless you plan on drinking the entire broth, you won't get the full benefit of the crab as the crab bits are so small they just become a part of the broth. Garage parking available. read more

If this were a review for only their pork xialongbaos, they would get an easy 5 stars!! I always compare restaurants' soup dumplings to din tai fung, which have the best ones in my opinion. Dan's is the closest to din tai fung that I've tried-- the outside is thin, the soup is nice is flavorful, & the pork tastes amazing too! would 100% recommend ordering these. They also have a spicy pork soup dumpling that sounded interesting! Their string beans were okay. It was very garlic overpowering, and extremely salty. The mapo tofu wasn't too good, it was really salty!! I would avoid these dishes next time & stick to their dumplings. read more

We love Dan's! The soup dumplings are to die for. They're such good quality and always come out consistent. Their chili oil dumplings are also very good. I highly recommend their bok choi on the side! They make their chili oil in house, and the server was so kind enough to give us some to go. Prior to coming here, I always have to be careful with a lot of Asian cuisine and my seafood allergy. So I gave them a call to ask if they had anything that was allergy friendly (even though I don't order seafood I was more worried about things like shrimp paste and etc being in sauces) The guy who answered the phone was really friendly and told me that they have plenty of options, but to be aware that they do cook it on the same grill. It is washed down in between and they would make sure to wash it before if anyone comes in and states they have allergies. But again, everyone be careful based on their own allergies. They can't promise you will be 100 percent safe. It's just a risk we have to take. I took a couple Benadryl with me to be on the safe side lol because I've been wanting those nooooodles of theirs for forever!!! So please keep that in mind before coming here!! Parking was really easy, it's nicely located with a bunch of other places around. It's located in 2nd and PCH. The outside looks really nice and clean. I was really pleased to see the inside was clean as well. I parked on the street side by the marina and walked in through a main entrance (by Italian homemade company and caffe Luxxe) just walk straight and it will be on your right The ambiance was also really nice. I like places where you can dress it up or dress it down. I really liked the lighting and ceiling design. I also think it's pretty specious with plenty of seating. It reminds me of restaurants in Washington DC. Just very modern and clean The man who answered the phone the other day and answered my seafood allergy questions was actually our waiter, Alex. Alex was really sweet and helpful. He was attentive and remembered I called the other day and helped guide me through the menu since it was our first time here. So 5 stars for alex!! I thought the food portions were on the smaller side to be honest. Especially since the full order of noodles were small and over 20 dollars. And based on the photos it looks like the short rib pieces have gotten smaller. But hey, everywhere is going up. Even McDonald's. So I can't blame them too much The food actually came out extremely fast!! Another plus in my book. Out of everything we ordered I don't think I'd get the pork xiao long bao soup dumplings again. But I recommend the short rib noodles, short rib fried rice and the pan fried pork dumplings. They have heaters outside for the outside seating & inside is pretty spacious. We ordered & did not wait long for our food at all & everything came out hot & ready. We came here on a Friday night and sat outside on the patio area. The servers were friendly and helped explain the different way you can have the handmade dumplings, and offered suggestions for us to try. The crispy chicken dumplings came out hot and crispy compared to the xiao long bao where the soup inside wasn't as hot as other places. The chicken dan mien was good but I was expecting the noodles to be more chewy since they were handmade. Went to the newest outpost of Dan Modern as my cousin hadn't tried dumplings before. The space is beautiful and in a nice entertainment complex with plenty of parking (first 90 min free, no one validates). We were seated immediately on a Saturday night (around 6:15 I think)... it was busy, but there were still tables left. I was surprised how much it had cleared out by 7. Service was friendly and fast (almost too fast dare I say?). We had: Chicken XLB Cucumber salad Scallion pancake 3 cup chicken The XLB was my least fave this time... basically no flavor without the soy/vinegar added. Cucumber salad was good as always, but spicier than in times past. Scallion pancake was perfection! 3 cup chicken was also well done. The food at the surrounding tables looked amazing and my only regret is we didn't have someone else with us to be able to split more dishes LOL. Half a star ding for the friendly service which basically went away after out food was delivered. We weren't offered refills on our tea until we were done. My best friend loves this place so I was excited to finally try it. It's a very nice establishment and our service was well-paced. Food however, was just okay. We left full and satisfied, so it did its job. We ordered scallion pancakes, garlic string beans, vegetable Dan mien, chicken fried rice, and chicken & shrimp XLB. I was certainly disappointed in the XLB, bland and lacked flavor. I didn't reach for another one. The garlic string beans were the star of the show. Excellent crunch and well made with tons of garlic flavor. We almost scored on another chicken fried rice. It was a mistake but we told that server we already received ours. Nice place to dine. I know it's a chain but this is a godsend LBC needs. We don't have a lot of chinese food here, let alone authentic and good tasting Chinese here. I've been to this place a few times in the past and it's been so good every single time! This most recent time was just as good! I went in for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty busy. Unfortunately, I think there was only one server working so I was waiting to be helped often. But considering there was only one person manning all the tables, I feel like he did a pretty good job with attending to me while also being very friendly and positive. I had to wait often for help but it wasn't as bad as it could've been in that situation so props to the server! There is a good amount of seating both inside and outside. I recommend eating outside when it's a nice day because the vibes are great. What I ordered (lunch portions): -pork xiao long bao: This came with 3 and I wish it had more because they're so good! I enjoy this every time! Soup and pork are very flavorful. The ginger and sauce just elevate the overall flavor too. -vegetable dan mein: This is my favorite thing here! Noodles are thick and chewy. Mushrooms are delicious. The greens give it a good crunch. The sauce could be a lot at times just because it has a very strong flavor but it's so good! **Lunch portions are cheaper but soooo much smaller. They're more so individual portions, so if you're looking to share, get the full sized portions!** Overall, this is one of my favorite restaurants at 2nd & PCH! Pretty pricey for small portions but it's been consistently good every time and it's a nice location by the ocean! Service has always been okay but food quality has always been great. This has become one of our very favorite places. Kind of like Din Tai Fung (because of soup dumplings) but you can actually walk in most days and get a table. It is at 2nd & PCH, an actual successful mall and right across from a great ice cream place for dessert. I am hooked on their salt and pepper tofu. The people are super nice. Extremely similar to Din Tai Fung (DTF), but has some stuff like scallion pancakes and beef rolls which DTF doesn't have.
