They loved the soup dumpling experience, and we shared the five piece chicken and pork dumplings. We ordered four orders to accommodate us. My husband and I came here for lunch on a Saturday since we had to run errands at the shops around. We got here close to opening so we were greeted promptly and opted to sit outside. We ordered the pork xlb, pan fried chicken dumplings, green beans, and short rib dan mein. My husband and I were blown away by the flavors of each dish. We kept telling each other how good the food was and how we were both thoroughly enjoying our meal. The short rib noodles are definitely a must. The noodles have a perfect texture and the meat is tender and so flavorful. The entire dish is flavorful and well balanced and I only wish the portion was bigger! My only complaint is that the sauce that came with the pan fried chicken dumplings was on the salty side. I dipped my dumpling into it and it lowkey ruined the dumpling for me because it was so salty. I don't know if the recipe is wrong but we didn't touch the sauce after we both tried it once. Not authentic. It's definitely American chain style Chinese food. Unfortunately compared to Din Tai Fung, the flavor doesn't compare. Mapo tofu with crab didn't have that much flavor. I think I was more impressed with the location in a cute outdoor mall called 2nd and PCH and the interior design which was very open and nicely done. Our table was super dirty when we were seated (had to wipe down our seats before sitting), service was pretty friendly but slow just so-so. We had the Short rib dan mein which had good flavor but was on the salty side and the dungeness crab fried rice which also had great flavor but was overdone with the salty seasoning. We also had the pork and shrimp handmade dumplings which were dry and bland. Shoulda got the soup dumplings instead which are probably better. Overall I like the general atmosphere and food had good flavor. But they're more of a 3.5 based on food requiring buckets of water to be drank or suffer from too much salt intake. I had been meaning to try Dan Modern Chinese since I noticed it coming soon, and finally made it over for lunch. Free parking in the 2nd and PCH parking garages for the first 90 minutes. The interior is gorgeous and bright though not that big. We had a very friendly and attentive waitress throughout the meal. The menu is a decent size, and during lunch hours they also offer several half size portions, which allowed me to try a lot of different dishes. Prices were not cheap, but not too unreasonable either. We ended up ordering xiao long bao, salt and pepper tofu, short rib fried noodles, spicy oxtail beef noodle soup, sauteed string beans, and sauteed snow pea leaf. Shredded ginger, black vinegar, and soy sauce were on the table for the xiao long bao. While I usually prefer pork xiao long bao, I actually preferred the chicken and shrimp xiao long bao over the pork and crab xiao long bao at Dan. The dumplings were decent, nothing mind blowing like Din Tai Fung (the obvious comparison), but not bad. While the sauteed veggies were nice and garlicky, I was expecting the string beans to be more wrinkled, achieved only via super hot oil in a wok, which is how they are prepared in more authentic Chinese restaurants. Nonetheless, both veggies were tasty. The fried tofu was good, although I prefer a different more crispy batter. I loved the chewiness of the thick noodles in the fried noodles, though the sauce was a bit too sweet for me. The oxtail beef noodle soup was piping hot and a perfect small size for tasting. We ordered the Chicken, Pork, and Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao. Our food came out super fast which was convenient because we were pretty hungry. They have both lunch and dinner portions you can order from but they do not serve lunch portions on the weekends. All of the dumplings were good but the Spicy Pork won me over completely. I'm so glad this spot opened up at 2nd & PCH! I will compare it to Din Tai Fung, since that is my standard for soup dumplings. In terms of the wait, this place is amazing. I've been there 3 times for dinner so far, and there has never been a wait for a table. I think it's not very well known yet since it opened up fairly recently. Service is comparable to DTF - maybe not *quite* up to par, but close. As for the menu, Dan definitely has more variety in terms of the soup dumplings - if I remember correctly there were 5 or 6 options of xiao long bao. There's also more hot entrees like tofu and shrimp dishes (none of which I tried). A couple things that DTF has that this place noticeably lacks - the dumplings in spicy sauce and the chocolate dumplings - two of my favorite dishes. In terms of the food we had, everything was very very good. I especially liked the pickled cucumbers and spicy pork XLB. We tried the Dungeness Crab and Pork soup dumplings, the Pork and Shrimp pan fried dumplings, the pickled cucumbers, and the Short Rib Dan Noodles. Food arrived fairly fast and was brought to us in a bit of a chaotic manner by someone other than our server. We weren't asked if we wanted any chili oil, or sauces, and we weren't given the opportunity to do so. Yet, it was offered to the table next to us. I loved the pickled cucumbers that were crisp, delicious and paired perfectly with the Dan Noodles. The noodles on the othet hand, had very little meat and most pieces of the short rib were chewy. Pretty good flavorwise, but the lack of short rib in the dish and the big clump of noodles that were stuck together, made this a 3 star dish. The soup dumplings and pan fried dumplings were good but not memorable. Overall, I felt like I wasn't dining out. It was a high priced meal with fast food paced service. The oxtail beef noodle soup was probably the best thing we had all night. It was a little bland, but the broth was clean and satisfying on a cold rainy night. The XLB was very soupy, but it was nothing more than average in my opinion, especially when they run for about $2/pc. The beef roll and pan fried dumplings were both duds for us. The pancakes were undercooked and the beef in the roll was just bland. The pan fried dumplings were once upon a time pan fried, but was soggy from sitting in its own grease for too long. Prices here are a lot steeper than other Dan locations, but that's also probably the sky high rent at 2nd & PCH. I've been waiting for months for this place to open, and it finally happened. Long Beach has been lacking an authentic Taiwanese restaurant since the beginning of time, and it's here! Northern Cafe is about to open on the 2nd Street promenade also. I've eaten at other Dan Modern locations before, including the one in Pasadena. This one is comparable, which means quality control in the main does a good job in assuring consistency. The signature dish is the xiaolongbao, and they deliver. Ironically, the dan noodles in the namesake is only adequate. One significant misstep was the server's failure to provide the ginger and dipping sauce with the xiaolongbao. We all know that these things are not edible without the proper dipping vinegar. You can spectate the chefs making the xiaolongbao from the fishbowl setup of their kitchen, similar to Din Tai Fung. Expect to pay an arm and a leg at this fancy shopping center, but I am willing to sacrifice some body parts for good food. read more

In a city devoid of quality Chinese food, getting Dan's Modern is a big coup. Yes it still doesn't compare to the great spots in SGV but it's a step up from what currently exists. It's clear they're still working out the kinks. The food comes out in reverse order (our last dish we got was an appetizer), they forgot to give us menus when we sat, they're not great at estimating wait times. They told us 20-25 minutes and we waited almost 50 minutes. All that said, the food quality and taste are the same as the other locations. The green beans are crispy and well seasoned. A favorite of our kids. The noodles are cooked al dente and tasty. The chicken is a little dry but it's a minor complaint. The soup dumplings are juicy and delicious. Comparable to Din Tai Fung. The scallion pancakes could be seasoned a little more but the dipping sauce makes up for it. The pan fried dumplings are crispy on the outside and moist inside. The salt and pepper tofu was a pleasant surprise. They use some kind of mochi powder that makes it chewy and crispy outside, tender on the inside. Our least favorite was the cucumber. It's heavy on the sweetness and ginger so it's different than what you might be used to. We'll probably skip it the next time. I probably went for over 10 years without eating Chinese food because I assumed it was not a healthy cuisine. I have since reconsidered because of the variety of vegetables and this place is phenomenal. They have five or six different types of very fresh vegetables side dishes. I recommend the bok choi, spinach with garlic, and green beans. Restaurants like this make me realize that Chinese food is actually one of the healthiest cuisines around of you manage to avoid the fried options and the heavy carb dishes.
