Dan's Kitchen is Chinese American food that has adapted to catering to the local population of the San Fernando Valley which means that flavours do not always hew to more traditional Chinese taste.    The food is based on pan Chinese cooking, especially the regions of Guangzhou/Canton, Shanghai, Sichuan/Szechuan.  Since the decline of the number of Cantonese restaurants in Socal, my take out lunch focused on this southern Chinese cuisine which traditionally has been noted for its emphasis on the use of vegetables, seafood, pork, chicken, and not overpowering the natural flavours inherent in the food with too much spices, but letting the ingredients speak for themselves.  1) Siumai:  Pork dumplings wrapped in thin wheat pasta that had a rubbery texture that becomes a bit gummy. The pork was pleasantly rough ground meat that seems to be marinated with Hoisin sauce giving the meat a sweet, fermented, earthiness. Small shrimp is hidden inside the ground meat.  Accompanying vinegar blackened with a touch of soy sauce is way too sweet so it masks the meatiness of the ground pork.  This vinegar would be far better without the added sugar in adding a complementary gastrique to enliven the fatty pork filling.  2) Rice Noodle Singpore Style:  The Maifun angel hair rice pasta was al dente and extremely dry. It seems curry powder was just dumped onto the Maifun and stirred around so that the curry powder was very gritty and its flavour not evenly distributed.   Golden Dragon in DTLA Chinatown of the 1980's dissolved curry powder in chicken broth to give the rice pasta a more flavourful, mellow, smooth, even curry flavour.   Very little healthful, colorful vegetables such as carrots, onions, bellpepper....only a hint of sautéed beansprouts. No pickled scallions. 6 sautéed shrimp are a nice size but mushy.   The measly amount of Char Siu pork was moist, meaty, firm, but cut with poor knife skills. The thin julienned meat was too long giving an unpleasant mouthfeel.    Subpar Chinese. Lacks sophisticated culinary methods such as finely honed knife skills. Chinese food made for a non-Chinese clientele so "authenticity" is lacking as well as taking advantage of customers who are not truly aware of the glories of East Asian cuisine.   Unfortunately, Dan's falls far short of Empress in DTLA Chinatown of the 1990's and Ton Kiang in San Francisco of the 2,000's.  2 stars read more

I'm really sad this was closed. This was my favorite spot in the valley. :( their soups especially were a comfort food for me.

Me and my bestie were looking for a local spot in the area that we haven't tried yet, and she came across this place and thought we should give it a try. We drove over and just FYI - it is located in a strip mall, so parking can be a bit tough, so plan ahead if eating inside. Once we arrived, from the outside - it didn't look like much. Once we walked in, there was plenty of seating and the decor of the restaurant was nicely designed. We were the only ones there though at around 2PM - so we were able to choose to sit anywhere we want. The only gripe I have about the ambiance - is because there was nobody there besides us, and no type of music playing, it was dead silent, like a funeral home unless we were talking. It just felt a bit awkward. Would highly recommend some background music to give it a vibe/mood. In terms of service - this is the one area where I felt it was lacking a bit. While our waitress was very nice, she only came by to see us when it was time to give out the menu, place our order, and bring us the food. From that point, she never checked in on us - even to the point where we had to yell behind the counter into the kitchen to ask her for the check. Now that the slight negative is out of the way, let's get onto the good part - the food! Because it was lunch hours (11 - 3PM) - they had great priced specials (all around $9-12 bucks) - which includes a smaller sized entree, rice, and a choice of soup. My friend opted for the lunch special mongolian beef, with white rice, and hot and sour soup. The beef was great (tasted it myself to confirm) - and she also thought the soup was flavorful. She ordered the Siu Mai as well on the side and said she enjoyed it! I opted for Dan's Garlic Fried Chow Mein with chicken, beef, and shrimp. For the price of $11 bucks - the portion size was impressively large. There was so much food and a healthy portion of protein throughout. Flavor profile of the garlic chow mein was also really good. I took some home for leftovers even. There looks like a lot of other great things on the menu I would try in the future. If you're local, and looking for good food - I would recommend to give the place a try. Great flavors and can't beat the price for the portion size. Maybe try takeout to avoid the lack of music and attentive service. I'll be back again to experiment with the menu. read more

My dad and I just ordered some takeout from here and everything was incredible. The chicken, shrimp and fried rice were moist, full of flavor, and packed with sauces and vegetables. Dan's garlic fried rice with shrimp is a MUST. We also ordered the sweet and sour chicken (bomb) and the orange chicken (bomb) and the kung pao shrimp (incredible). Highly recommend! So glad Dan's Kitchen Chinese Cuisine was open on New Year's Eve. It saved an otherwise already non-party NYE from becoming entirely sad. The best dish was definitely Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. I would totally order this again. I was expecting the Whole Sole Fish to be an actual whole fish, but it was chopped in pieces. It tasted great and it sure was great not to have to dig for fish bones, though. Vegetable Soup is chock full of veggies and the broth tasted full and great. Vegetarian Dan's Garlic Noodles was so full of flavor you'll forget it was vegetarian. Chicken with Veggies and Schechwan Sauce was the same exact dish as Chicken with Veggies, they just handed us a container with sauce to pour on ourselves. Next time, I'll just order the Chicken with Veggies and Schechwan Sauce since we don't have to order separately for the non-spicy food eaters. Crispy Calamari is soooooooo good. Great squid, great batter, perfectly fried. Dimsum Platter was a bit weird for me. I know they listed the items in the menu, but seriously, calling this dimsum is such a misnomer. Pork Chop did not have the bones in it which a lot of people will appreciate, but I was kinda hoping there was going to be some salty spicy thing going on again, but it did not. read more

My wife & I live about six blocks from this spot & we absolutely love it! We always call ahead & arrange carry out. Their staff is calm, quiet, & attentive. They've NEVER once screwed up our order. This is a huge deal for me, lol. We order the vegetable fried rice (fire), cream cheese wontons (very good) & sesame chicken with steamed rice (delicious). Comes out to about $30. Tons of food. So many leftovers. Order never takes more than 15 minutes to be ready. Picking up order takes less than 2 minutes. Full parking lot (This location is in the middle of a strip mall that has countless other businesses) Would recommend always picking up rather than dining in. I ordered Dans Kitchen through Uber Eats on Christmas Day. What a disappointment! First, I should say that they got the Orange Chicken and the Eggplant with Fish were ok. That's why I gave two stars. I ordered moo shu pork. They did not include the gooseneck sauce or the crepes. Thanks for nothing. I ordered the Imperial soup. It would be fine if you enjoy a shakers worth of salt in your soup. I ordered Yang Chow Fried Rice. The description read BBQ pork's and shrimps. No mention of the carrots and peas that I was inflicted with. The other rice offerings mentioned carrots and peas so I thought this one doesn't have them. Maybe the menu was wrong or maybe they tossed them in out of habit. Either way , I did not appreciate them. I ordered Har Gow. Where was the dipping sauce? I. Didn't ever bother complaining to Uber Eats for a credit. I've been going to a hole in the wall chinese place in simi for years and I thought that there wasn't anything better. Well this place isn't necessarily better, but it's closer way more authentic than Panda Express. I had a pretty bad day and came home kind of broken. When my boyfriend came in the door, I was curled up on the bed, listening to a true crime podcast in complete darkness and i instantly felt better with this meal. I'm telling you, this is literally the best chinese food I've had in a very long time, I don't even know how long really. Give this place a try, this is my new favorite pricier Chinese food joint, but TOTALLY worth the extra price. Extremely flavorful. It's family style but they actually give you enough. Living in East Tennessee, it's nearly impossible to find even decent Chinese food. So while visiting in the Los Angeles area, we decided to give Dan's a shot. It had an "A" health department rating and the prices were reasonable so we gave it a try. Not bad. Pretty good. Better than decent. Cudos to Dan. Sweet and sour chicken was okay. I added notes on DoorDash for the Dasher to ask for soy and hot sauce. Dasher even called me from the restaurant as there was language barrier with the employee. I kindly asked for soy and hot sauce and they confirmed they will. There was no soy sauce, hot sauce, or utensils (I requested on the app). Furthermore, food is mediocre. We had company yesterday so we decided to order Chinese food. I remembered that Dan's Kitchen has an assorted Dim Sum platter that I knew Mom would like. I ordered 2 of those so we could all have some. My brother ordered Kung Pao beef, his girlfriend asked for Szechuan pork, and I opted for the shrimp in black bean sauce. The Dim Sum platter had 2 each of shrimp har gow, pork siu mai, steamed chicken dumpling, cream cheese wonton, and egg roll. The highlight of the assortment was definitely the egg roll. It was not your usual chicken or pork or veggie. It was stuffed with a delicious and velvety mixture of cream cheese and potato. I enjoyed the shrimp in black bean sauce. It was filled shrimp, onion, and bell pepper. My brother and his girlfriend both reported that their dishes were tasty and just the right amount of spice. read more

Did I just find my local go-to spot for Chinese food? Nothing hits the spot like Chinese food so everyone needs one of those. I tried to order delivery directly from their website but it was pick-up only. They are on Postmates (everything will be slightly more expensive though). Great menu with lots of options. I had the wonton soup (kudos to them for using chicken and not pork so it's more accessible to people who don't eat pork), the chow mein with shrimp, and the salt and pepper wings. Ordered via a third party delivery service, so I'll give it a second star with the thought in mind that the reason it may have been mediocre was because of the delivery wait time. Now, for the food taste. There is none. This is terrible. The wontons in the soup are mushy. The orange zest chicken (ordered spicy) was not spicy at all and had the texture of mashed potatoes. The chow mein tasted like air. Yes, exactly what you are thinking, nothing. No flavor. Not a damn seasoning taste in sight. I made the mistake of not reading the reviews before ordering. Never again. I walked in. Place was a ghost town. I even asked if it was open. A young lady that worked there was coming in bringing stuff in. And she responded yes. I said ok in going to use the restroom first. We have ordered from Dans a few times and it has done the job. It's not far from my house and the food is decent. I have a dietary restrictions so I mostly order just veggie items. Last time I ordered Dans I got home from picking up the order (because they don't deliver), my order was all wrong mostly pork items. I called Dan's and they told me I could come back and get what I ordered. Because they handled it as they should I didn't make a fuss I understand people make mistakes. A few weekends later I ordered from Dan again I got shrimp and broccoli this time. This was the worst looking shrimp and broccoli I ever saw it was bland with no sauce or seasoning the broccoli was barely cooked and the shrimp was mushy and hard to look at. This place absolutely sucked hard, and I regret not taking out from exotic swan Thai. Ordered the chicken broccoli.
