AVOID DANVILLE AUTO CENTER AT ALL COSTS I don't usually leave reviews, but what happened here was so outrageous that people deserve to know. My girlfriend brought her car here after it died while parking. She told them up front it was likely the battery (which they had just replaced), the alternator, or a loose wire. Pretty straightforward, right? Wrong. From there, it was a nightmare: * They refused to return her calls. She was the actual owner of the car, yet they completely ignored her and would only speak to me. * They dragged the repair out over three full days while dodging updates. * When they finally claimed it was just a loose wire, they quoted us over $500, apparently because they charge $250/hr just to "diagnose." * When we picked the car up, the passenger side window no longer worked, even though it was fine before. And the worst part? When we confronted Shawn (the owner) about all of this, he laughed in our faces, interrupted us, and treated us like we were the problem. When my girlfriend left, they actually called her a "f**ing b****." I confronted Shawn, and he admitted it--but said he was talking about her and not me. As if that somehow makes it okay. This wasn't just bad service. This was open disrespect. The way they dismissed and insulted my girlfriend made it clear they were trying to take advantage of her because she's a woman. Shawn is a terrible owner. I and my family have been bringing our cars here for 25+ years. I dropped my car off and told him exactly what the issue could be (a loose wire). He first told me the car was all fixed and was just waiting on the mechanic to show up. Then I was told the mechanic never showed up. I couldn't get a call back for 2 days. finally he called my partner back to tell him it was a loose transmission wire (which is exactly what I said when dropping it off). I was quoted $550 to fix a loose wire. When I came in he said he was giving me a deal at $400. I wanted to reiterate I was upset with the lack of communication from him and his team. Shawn proceeded to start laughing at me and said "Hey if you want to fix the car yourself, go ahead". What a terrible way to treat a long time repeat customer by laughing at them when they show they are upset by the service they are being overcharged for. When I walked out to get my car the passenger window is now not working. I walked back in to tell Shawn that and his response was "You did something when you got back in the car & thats not my issue." My windows were all working fine before I brought the car in. I told Shawn I am now getting upset because I just paid $400 to fix a loose wire that should have taken a day to fix yet it took 3 days. Shawn said "Fuck you! take me to small claims then." I was taken a back by a grown man screaming in my face like that so I just got in my car and left. My partner who came with me to get my vehicle called me after I left and let me know Shawn then turned to him and told him that I was a fucking bitch and a cunt. Needless to say 25+ years of loyal customer service has gone down the drain. I will not be returning to Danville auto and highly discourage other people from going here either. Many other places that can fix a car and won't egregiously over charge. To Shawn I have to say that I myself work with the general public. Laughing in someones face when they express displeasing service and getting in a woman's face to scream that she is a fucking bitch is incredibly poor business practice. I will be looking into legal action. I am incredibly upset by this whole interaction with a grown man as a business owner who feels it is ok to scream obscenities in a woman's face like that. read more

Really top service and honest in several interactions with multiple vehicles. I also spend a few minutes during check-in and check-out and overhear transparent, polite, and honest discussions with other customers, too! - When a CEL was a very easy fix, Danville Auto didn't even bother to charge me for running diagnostics on the car! - I gladly awarded them my business on a B-service for my AMG and the team was prompt and clear with what work was being performed. - I've also have done a SMOG check with the team and they completed the service promptly and without any issue. One special thing to note - they honored the written coupon price. Beware of other smog centers that love to charge more or "luxury / exotic" vehicles which is such an obvious money grab. read more

I called to make an appointment for service on my vehicle that would require about 8 hours of labor. I generally believe that appointments (ought to) avoid wasting my time and the shop's time and space with a vehicle sitting "idle" for days.... Nope. After Danville Auto Center had my vehicle for 7 full days without any communication from them whatsoever, I checked the company name on the estimate/work order they gave me to be certain that I had left my vehicle at the same shop that received all of the stellar reviews and comments about customer service above and beyond etc. So after 7 days of silence I called at 15 minutes before closing (5pm) to check on their progress. The gentleman told me that the vehicle was finished but they wanted to test drive it. Given the reviewer anecdotes about the astounding and out of this world customer care people receive even after hours, I paused on the phone, admittedly expecting something like "We're going to take it for the test drive now and you can come and pick it up tonight assuming there are no mechanical issues." Nope. So I assumed it would be ready the next morning and that if there was a problem that they'd call me. Nope. So I waited 2 more days after my car was "finished" and still not a single call or communication. Now they've had my vehicle 9 days. So I drove to the shop to find out what the heck was going on. There was my vehicle hoisted on the rack being worked on. I explained to the gentleman all that had transpired, particularly that I hadn't received one call and that I was told that it was finished 2 days prior-he seemed not to know anything about it: By this time I was a bit annoyed at the lack of communication and the inaccuracies: I asked if he knew how long my vehicle had been in their shop. Nope. He said the manager/owner (I don't recall precisely what word he used) was not there: It was a bit after 12 and I recalled one negative review in which the owner of the business replied to the negative review and rebuffed the reviewer by claiming that they don't take lunch breaks at Danville Auto Center, making the reviewer appear untruthful or at least inaccurate-I refute that claim, whether the manager was eating or not, he wasn't there to deal with my complaint during the noon hour so from my experience my response to the claim that they don't take lunch is..... Nope. I received a call (WOW!) a bit before 4pm on the same (9th) day with a message that the vehicle was finished and ready to pick up. I am entirely unsatisfied, obviously, with the lack of communication, poor customer service and being told the car was finished when it wasn't. I score zero on that account. Mechanically they did good work (as far as I can tell) and at a reasonable price (should always be the case) so on that account I rate them a 4, thus averaging out to a 2. Will I use them again? Nope. I should also point out the estimate they gave me for one of the repairs was far too low; about one fifth of what that repair ended up costing. Fortunately I knew that the repair would be much more expensive than the estimate they provided, so I expected the repair to be at least $1000 more than the estimate. If I had expected a charge for that repair of $200 rather than the actual cost of $1200, as many of their customers certainly would have in this situation, I would be a very disgruntled customer because of it. I would like to think DAC would only take enough appointments for the day that allows them to look at every car on day one, call and update customers if a vehicle will be kept overnight, improve communication with clients and exercise caution in handing out estimates. At least they should improve on the 9 day before a call to clients practice. Do I think they will? Nope. read more

I got there at 12:02 (I checked my phone) and was told that the only guy who could do smog checks had just left for his lunch break. He'd be back in an hour. Took my Jeep Wrangler to Shawn after a client recommended his shop. The last thing I expected was for my car to be stolen from his shop. This car was a birthday present from my husband. I dropped my car off on a Monday and didn't hear any update whatsoever. The following Monday morning, I had a missed call from my client who referred Shawn. I thought that that was odd and I decided to give Shawn a call and he asked me if my husband or I picked up the car over the weekend. I was like "no.... Why?" And he said "your car's gone. It's not here" I started to laugh thinking he was joking but then I quickly realized he was serious. Why didn't he call me first thing Monday morning when the car wasn't there?! I called my client back and she asked if I heard about what happened to my car. No shit I did. She then told me that Shawn called her asking for my number because he didn't have it. Such lies!!! Why wouldn't he have my number when it was in the service receipt he printed me when I checked my car in. We filed a police report. I haven't spoken to Shawn since but all the details that were shared to me by Danville PD were so alarming. Shawn or his tech admitted to leaving my car keys in my car on Friday night. How careless for an auto shop owner do you have to be to leaves them in the car?! Plate readers in town ID'd my car late Saturday evening which was when my car was stolen from their care. When asked for surveillance footage, Shawn claimed he couldn't turn them in because he forgot his password. Then he told the cops a week later oh sorry it only saves footage for 7 days so the footage is gone. Plate readers across the Bay Area noted my car being driven between the hours of 8-11PM the week my car was under their care. It was seen in Walnut Creek, Concord, Martinez, Pleasant Hill... Shawn had the nerve to tell the cops that I was fully aware of this late night joy riding. My car was recovered by Concord Police about 5 weeks later. Car intact, plates removed. This happened in April 2022 and I've finally worked up the energy to write this review in hopes to save somebody else the heartache of losing their car. After sharing my experience with this shop to people, I've been hearing not only more and more shady work from this business but also stories of other stolen cars/belongings while under their care. As I stand here, it's past 7:30 on a Saturday evening. My fiancée had just driven out to San Ramon and gotten stranded at the Home Depot when her car decided it really had to go to the bathroom. Its bladder (coolant reservoir) burst. Saturday's are a disaster for car repair, so I scrambled from our apartment to find a row and auto shop that was open; Danville Auto Center was about it, even though there were about 6 shops within a stone's throw of Home Depot. Long story short, Shawn was the consummate good mechanic. Being gracious, mild-mannered, thorough, and open when someone is essentially at your mercy counts a ton in my book. He was all of those things. He went and got parts after explaining a straightforward diagnosis, and stayed open FAR later than posted to make sure it was fixed. He gave us recommendations for a couple other parts on our aging coupe and estimates to help us know what to pay, wherever we take it. It's well out of our way, and we like our mechanic in SF, but we'll definitely look to bring the car back here, even though it's way out of our way. The owner told me to bring the car in and I did so at the time he asked. I checked in every hour and each time someone else would answer the phone and tell me that he was gone. I expected to have the car back by noon and I didn't get the quote until after 3 pm. It turned out that the car did not need the repair he said that it needed and the dealership put a new wheel on and the problem stopped. I'm not sure what's going on here but he's nice enough...I'm just not sure he knows what exactly he's doing. * I verified that the parts that he stated should be replaced did not with a simple test: and the parts did not need to be replaced. I called four other local mechanics and the bid here was far below the other shops but without sacrificing quality. It's 6:15pm on a wed night - I knew there is no way any of the popular tire stores would be open. For some reason I had a feeling this place might just be open because it's attached to a gas station, but more significantly, the guys who run the service and smog shop are immigrants which a great work ethic and friendly personality. Sure enough, I roll up and the garage is open and the gentleman is working away. I couldn't believe it. I asked if he could fix my flat, and he didn't even hesitate... no excuses, no waiting, no upselling, none of the typical frustrating BS that you have come to expect from the big chain american work force. Danville Auto Center previously was called Danville Auto Repair under the previous owner. Surprisingly it is located next to a gas station on Diablo Rd across from BevMo. I never thought that I would have work done at a gas station but it is independent from the gas station. The new owner, Shawn, was a mechanic for Toyota before starting his own business. He has done regular maintenance service (oil change, etc) of our cars as well as some major work (Transmission for our Honda Odyssey). He is knowledgeable, honest and his pricing is reasonable.
