Probably the best place in Balto to grab some Indian Food. I took a half day of work and came in here for lunch. (I mean who on earth would be productive at work after eating a massive amount of carbs and going into a diabetic coma) Was greeted and promptly sat down in a very simple but class dining area. Nice flatware, glasses, white table cloths and relaxing ambiance. Food was great, hot and plenty of it. Would get 5 stars from me but I saw a customer leave and instead of changing out the table cloth the server came back with a Clorox bleach pent and removed the stain. Table cloths should be removed and changed after each customer, similar to how you must use a clean plate every time you go to get food. read more

I love the food here. My favourite include the Chicken Karahi and Lamb rogan josh. I love that you can request the level of spice in your food. I tried their mixed grill today for the first time and enjoyed it. Their buffet had a great variety of good quality food. That being said I didn't enjoy it much as the spices were mild. On a subsequent visit, I brought this up with the staff there and they said they were able to accommodate request for spicier food during buffet hours. I have recommend this place to friends and look forward to future visits. read more

We've lived in Fells for 3 years and we just visited Darbar for the first time. Why did we wait so long?!? We order chicken masala and lamb vindaloo. The entrees we're great but the garlic naan was life changing. Working late again, I tried some takeout chicken biryani and chicken vindaloo from Darbar. The chicken portions in both were quite generous, but rather dry. I definitely needed the sauce to eat it. The vindaloo had a nice kick too, but was rather heavy and oily - not my favorite. The biryani wasn't that flavorful either. It's a decent amount of food for what you get but I would probably choose Kumari or Nepal House over Darbar, at least based on this experience. There's just so many Indian places nearby that it makes it tough to stand out. read more

really wanted indian food and this place was perfect to satisfy my craving! the portions looked small at first, but they were honestly quite filling and my friend and I both had leftovers! the chicken tikka masala was super flavorful and yummy. i could seriously drink that sauce. the palak paneer was good, but nothing that really stood out. This is honestly the best Indian food in Baltimore!! Our server was so helpful when it came down to deciding what to order. The chicken curry was phenomenal and the chicken tikka masala was amazing!! They made everything exactly how we ordered it. I myself am not a fan of spicy food, so I have always been skeptical of how spicy the food is according to people. They really made my chicken curry exactly how I wanted it, not spicy!! And they did the same for my boyfriend who ordered a mildly spicy chicken masala. It was perfect! My friend and I were craving Indian food and I saw this place while on a walk the other weekend. It looks fancy, but we came causal on a Friday and felt comfortable. It definitely lived up to my expectations. The food was delicious, the service very accommodating, and the atmosphere wonderful. When we were ordering the waiter gave us really good advice regarding the menu and asked us about our spice tolerance. I overestimated my tolerance, so even though I was 1/3 through my dinner, they took the dish back and made it less spicy for me! To me this demonstrated their excellence in service and desire to get things right for the customer. My friend and I were stuffed by the end of the meal and decided to forgo dessert. Again the waiter went above and beyond and gave us a dessert to-go "on the house". It was a very kind gesture. We will certainly be returning, though next time hopefully their buffet will be open so we can try more dishes! read more

Food is excellent as always. Tonight the waitstaff was less than par. Very disappointed at the way our table was greeted as compared to other tables, and, we were never checked on, or had drinks refilled. She asked if we wanted our dinner mild, medium or hot. She then asked the next table how they wanted spice: 0-10. She had been short and not friendly. Now, we waited 10 minutes for our check and, she brings it and tells us their machines/internet is down. She says she has to write out information down for later (credit cards!). When we asked he why she didn't tell us this beforehand, she said she was busy... We were the only table here at the moment. Excellent food quality- a notch above the typical indian fare one expects. We ordered vegetarian: the Tandoori Paneer Tikka was very nice, as was the Chana Masala. There was an appropriate amount of heat and the food wasn't overly heavy. Service was perfect- we were well attended to and taken care of. The wine selection was good and not overpriced. The atmosphere was great- very cozy and warm: soft lighting, a wood beamed ceiling, and plenty of artwork adorning the walls. A really fantastic restaurant! The food is really really good, but the best part about Darbar is how incredibly friendly the owners and servers are. I came on recommendation of a friend who said how they were very kind to his family at the lunch buffet, so I came in for dinner. First, we got a complimentary glass of wine with our dinner!!! Our food was fantastic and the server gave great recommendations. The portion sizes are very generous for the price! Our server gave us a free rice pudding dessert even though we said we were super full, which so was nice! I came here on the recommendations of my coworkers for the lunch buffet; it's a decently-reviewed local Indian restaurant not far from the office, what's not to like? Quite a bit apparently. Pull up to the restaurant and you're greeted by a small, non-assuming restaurant not akin to to a hole-in-the-wall. We walked inside, were promptly seated at a table, and dug into the buffet. Being Punjabi and having dined at Indian restaurants across the world, I typically have very high expectations for 1) the authenticity of the dishes 2) the preparation of the curries and 3) the quality of the tandoori dishes/breads. Given this, I lowered my expectations for Darbar-- sadly, they were still not met. You've got a buffet that's on the small side, expect 5-7 main dishes, rice, and your usual accompaniments. A lot of the vegetarian dishes were made with cheaper substitute ingredients. For example, you've got mushroom kadai instead of paneer kadai (really?). The naan is not served alongside the buffet-- a huge drawback. Instead, small baskets of naan are brought to your table. We received 3 naans total (not nearly enough for 3 guests during a buffet). Not once did the serving staff or manager bring any more baskets. No guest should have to ask for more naan in a bottomless buffet--period. See my review of dishes below: ---- Things I Liked: Gulab Jamun - You can't really mess up Gulab Jamun, especially when it's store-bought like the jamun here. Rasmalai- Ditto above. Naan - The naan was just fine, but not nearly as fluffy and tandoorlike as it should be. 3/5 Things I Disliked: Vegetable Samosa - The veggie "samosas" in the buffet were NOT samosas. Instead, they were frozen veggie and potato patties that were fried and served in the buffet. These were not made in-house either, as I instantly recognized the frozen foods brand from which they were bought (I use them at home and they're available in Indian stores everywhere). Tasteless and overcooked, these patties were very poor. 1/5 Saag Spinach - Palak paneer (or saag) is a difficult dish to screw up. You've got cooked spinach, usually with some cream thrown in, and a base of tomatoes, onions, garlic, and ginger. This palak was bland and flavorless-- even paneer (if there was any) wouldn't help this dish. 2/5 Chicken Tikka Masala - Many people confuse butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. Butter chickenis meant to be light and sweet, while chicken tikka should be more tart and spicy. Unfortunately, I'm not sure Darbar's chicken tikka falls in either camp. The dish was too sweet to be chicken tikka but not nearly creamy enough to be butter chicken. Tough pieces of overcooked chicken dominate this dish with its watery curry. 2/5 Dal Makhani - With far too many lentils packed into this dish, the taste simply does not shine through. There is no evidence of a tomato, onion, garlic, and ginger base (tadka) and the dish lacks any buttery creaminess (makhan = butter/cream). 2/5 Tandoori Chicken - Typical of poor Indian restaurants, this chicken was far too dry and devoid of flavor. This is because the chicken had obviously been sitting in the buffet dishes for some time, being constantly heated and dried. The tandoori flavors simply did not shine past the initial bite of dry chicken. 2/5 I would not recommend Darbar; it might be okay for a quick fix but simply lacks the authenticity and careful preparation of dishes. The spices simply do not reveal themselves in any dish neither is the service or atmosphere worth nothing. While not in Baltimore, I would recommend the following Indian restaurants instead: Royal Taj (Elkridge, MD off of 175 by Costco) Ananda (Fulton, MD off of 216 by Maple Lawn) Chutney (Columbia, MD off of Snowden River Pkwy) Rasika (2 locations in Washington, DC.) Indigo (H St, Washington, DC.) read more

I'm surprised by all the raving reviews. I wanted Indian food (my favorite) tonight so we ordered takeout from Darbar given is close proximity. It was nothing like the Indian food I'm used to. The chicken tikka masala was extremely sweet and creamy. I'd compare it to a mix between tomato soup and ketchup. There was also very few pieces of chicken. It was mostly all sauce. The chicken korma on the other hand had very little flavor. We also ordered the garlic naan. It was very garlicky (which I don't necessarily mind) but seemed like they used dried garlic flakes rather than fresh. Overall the naan was the best part of the meal. 5 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH!! This was the best sit down meal we have had in the city. The food was delicious. We ordered the Paneer Lababdar Chana Masala. Both spectacular! So many vegetarian and vegan options! Most importantly though our waiter was the kindest, most caring and attentive person i have ever met in the restaurant business. We were over ambitious on the Chana masala spice level and our waiter noticed and offered to lessen the intensity for us. He was helpful with his favorite recommendations and virtuous of our dietary restrictions. He truly made our experience and made us feel part of the Darbar family. We live within a mile of Darbar and we can walk there ... it's a great neighborhood type restaurant. I've been to Darbar several times and it is consistently good. The dishes are tasty and plentiful and the staff is gracious and welcoming. Very nice that they also give a complementary glass of wine with each meal.
