If you know me, you know I typically come here every Tuesday and Thursday when my night classes get out. I've only had the carmel, strawberry and glazed. Carmel is by far the best. The donuts here pillow soft and have easily become my new addiction. Glad I discovered this place after having a baby, because if I had discovered it while pregnant, you'd think I was having triplets. The girls are always friendly and the donuts are always fresh. The doughnuts were so good that I shamelessly ate 3 in the car on the ride home! They were fluffy and just the right amount of sweetness. The glazed were perfection but the other filled and flavored that I got were wonderful too. It is closed on Sundays but open 24 hours a day mon-sat. I found Dat donut while fantasizing about junk food and watching Man vs. Food one night. (go figure) After seeing the size of this donut I had to know, is it tasty as well? Dat Donut is not only as big as your head for the small price of $3.00(cash only) but it is freaking delicious! I find the large donut to be better than the regular size and my theory is since the donut is so large they have to fry it a bit longer. Which results in the outside being crispy and the inside being(I kid you not) JUICY. It is the best donut I have ever eaten. These are some pretty good donuts! I got three glazed and three chocolate, intended on sharing the glazed and inhaling the chocolate. But the glazed were just so puffy sticky delicious-looking I had to try one. It just dissolved when I bit into it . Oh yeah, the chocolate ones were good too. The shop shares space with a barbecue joint--have to check that out too--and I wondered how they kept the donuts from absorbing that smoky flavor, but it's not an issue. You walk in one set of doors and that's the donut shop. You walk past that and into another set of doors for the barbecue. So you can smell the barbecue the second you get out of your car, but it never affects the donuts. I'll admit- its been years since I've even driven through this part of Chatham, but you'd think reading the reviews that this place was in a war zone. Hardly. Like any place in the city, be mindful of your surroundings. Duh. I begin by listing: boxes have handles (see photo) they are not total sugar bombs better-than-decent selection blueberry has very...bold flavor, sort of like a blueberry muffin. Coffee is about average-but-slightly-better. Service is friendly and they'll answer your questions. Select cake donuts are fried to the point where some actually have a crispness to the outer layer. You'll never, ever, ever get that at a particular chain(s) and many other independantly owned joints. Its is something to truly relish. I will say as far as select yeast donuts go, heaven. It moves me to words poetic on their soft, moist texture and how they wrap the tongue in blistering exstacy that begs to never end. Yes, that much. There is about a 1/2 dozen stools inside to eat these treats with an air conditioner to keep you cool on hot days. For overall personal preference, they are not my favorite donuts. I took my parents and my girlfriend here recently on a self-curated tour of South Side Chicago food (other stops included Uncle John's, Soul Veg, and Calumet Fisheries) and this was, by far, one of the most interesting places I have ever visited or eaten from in Chicago. Sweet (but not too sweet) and simple, yeasty, doughy fried doughnuts served hot and fresh. From chocolate cake classic to long johns to raspberry jelly filled to the infamous gigantic 'Dat Donut' signature, there is a wide variety of tastes available here. They're reasonably priced, to boot. And they have the coolest neon signs I've ever seen. Myself, my girlfriend, and my Mom totally lost it over this place. The best was the simple glazed of course, and a close second was watching Lester, the doughnut man, hand cutting puffy doughnuts by the dozen through the shop window. It's completely true -- the donuts here are bigger than your head. Better yet, the quality and the prices at Dat Donut make this place worth the stop for more than just the novelty of buying a huge donut. First of all, I was a little confused when I got into the parking lot. The door is inside another door that only has a sign for Uncle John's Ribs. Just trust that you're going the right way, and once you walk in you'll see the sign on the door to the right. Also, yes, the location is a little sketchy, but if you come here during the day it's perfectly fine. Now, the donuts! Their giant "Big Dat" donuts come in glazed or chocolate frosted, and once I saw them lined up in the display case I knew I just had to have one for $4. I also asked for two chocolate donuts, but when I got back on the road and looked in the bag I had two chocolate frosted donuts- totally not the same thing! However, the consensus was that despite being the wrong kind, they were still better than the average donut. The texture was light and airy, similar to Krispy Kremes and definitely not like the cake-like texture at Dunkin Donuts. But Dat Donut topped both of the chains because the glaze wasn't overly sweet, and the donuts were extremely fresh. Also, the height of the donuts was taller than I'm used to, and for just over $2 for two, they're a great value! If you happen to be on the south side (or near the University of Chicago like I was!) stop by and get a giant donut and a couple of regular sized ones. They should call themselves "Dam Good" instead of "Dat". The building it was in was a little scary, but I happened to be in the neighborhood (coming from the NIke outlet nearby). The donuts were so ridiculously good. They said dat huge donut would take 20 minutes, so rather than wait for that we grabbed an assortment of what they already had on hand. The donuts were so fresh, light, and airy that you don't feel any of the guilt you normally would scarfing down a half dozen. If this place was closer I'd get so fat on these. read more

First, does anyone remember the "fire" at Leon's in about '82 or so? The subsequent rebuild gave us the Leon's BBQ patio, which begat DAT Old-Fashioned Donuts. Now, back to business; when I was an Avid bodybuilder, my cheat day for the month would be a Big Dat, an apple fritter, 10 wings, a small order of perch from J &J Fish and a large Vanilla shake form Taurus Flavors. To put it in perspective, I used fast on fridays to purge my system, and pee into a measuring cup to monitor my fluid intake and consumption, I was 5-7% bodyfat everyday; needless to say I took my diet very seriously. So to be on my cheat day menu, you had to pack a serious punch. Even if I got nothing else that day, a big Dat and an apple fritter was a MUST. It was the only way to satisfy my inner fat-ass. I knocked them down to 4 stars because of all the popcorn, nachos, hot dogs and dumb sh-t they sell at the other end of the Donut Shop; that and the time I went in there at about 3 in the morning and the chick behind the counter tried to sell me some weed. Granted, it's a solid marketing plan; who else but a weed head would be in a donut shop at 3 am on Tuesday and I'm certainly not knocking her hustle, but she didn't know who I was or if I was a snitch or what and I would have hated for my donut fix joint to get raided for some stupid sh-t and I doubt anyone that non-discreet would have had access to good weed anyway.... read more

glaze it on. get your glaze on. glaze it good. glaze it up. many of these phrases are easily coined w/ a synth machine in your head as you taste sugary bliss that makes your teeth ache a sweet sweet wince. thanks to a good friend for introducing me to this mainstay for starchy sugary longing. this is midwestern distinction at it's finest. my favorites: the strawberry frosted and pineapple frosted are hits that give you tasstes of fruit in the icing. the donut is airy and soft, not cakey, if you are a fan of cakey donuts. the caramel frosted was equally delicious as i rotated between the 3 flavors to sing a strawberry caramel and pineapple caramel medley of -dangerous on the dance floor- levels of sugar ..... and carbs. they say they are 24 hrs, but trust that they'll run out of donuts and you'll be annoyed by the schedule and the popularity they have. with this level of donut debauchery, you will try again and with no regrets enjoy every dollar spent. my next donut to try at dat donuts-- the fritter. read more

This place has all the types of donuts you want with all the freshness you've been missing from your oh-so convenient chain donut shop. My favorites: the glazed and the glazed Big Dat. The Big Dat is big. The equivalent of at least 4 donuts in one convenient, giant, circle of sugar and fat and heaven. The Big Dat is not for the faint of heart. By the time you've finished a solo Big Dat, you'll either feel very proud of yourself or very disappointed in your life choices because you don't feel too good anymore. I went into Dat Donut today to see it getting remodeled. I just love their strawberry donuts. They are fluffy and light yet, dense. It's amazing how they make a balance between the two. I was so tempted to get the Big Dat, which is nearly as big as my head. It would be a crime to my waistline but, oh so yummy! Hoorah! We've been going on a donut hunt all around Chicago and Dat Donut is by far in the lead. The buttermilk is perfection!! As is the chocolate and even the glazed yeast donut. All Fresh and delicious. And for the price what more can you ask for. When other shops deep into the city are charging almost $3 for a donut that can't even compare to the $.89 cent donut at Dat donut. People can question the service/attitude of the place but it's straight to the point and it fits the place. If you're worried about the location just go early. But it's worth the time if you want a real donut. read more

Wow, these donuts are delicious! This location use to be the old Leon's BBQ building from back in the day. I ordered a dozen combination glaze,cake and chocolate donuts for under $11.00. All were fresh and customers were coming in as fast as they brought them out. I would give it 5 stars, but they were not fully stocked with all the available flavors posted. It is best to go earlier in the day for more selections. This location is open 24 hours, but I suggest going during day light hours for those who are faint of heart about area. Don't let the area scare you off (the dangers of the location is totally overblown), because you will be missing such an awesome establishment. Dat Donut is hidden gem nestled on the corner of 83rd and Cottage Grove. The first thing you will notice when you park is the delicious smell of homemade sweets proliferating the air. They've also recently opened up a John's BBQ right next door, so you will probably get some wafts of BBQ as well. There will probably be a small line when you first get there, but it moves fast so it's a short wait. They've got a bunch of different glazed donuts, along with the huge Dat Donut (glazed or chocolate) and the apple fritters, which imo, is their crème de la crème. The donuts were alright, and honestly, nothing super special. It's definitely fresher and softer than what you will get anywhere else, but a donut is a donut for the most part. The apple fritters, however, is where the foodgasm comes from. The crunchy crispy exterior, with the soft, warm interior, and the subtle flavor of apple that lingers with every bite = absolute heaven. Come here, get the apple fritters and go home, because your day will already have been made at this point. DIS PLACE IS AWESOME!! read more

This is a simple yeast donut at it's pinnacle. Chewy, moist, fluffy, the glaze crackling when you bit into it. This isn't a boutique donut like glazed and infused or the doughnut vault- this is a damn good simple, yeast donut. Glazed and strawberry frosted are my go-tos. I've asked the baking schedule but it seems they bake them as they need them. Maybe you'll get lucky and get one right out of the oven. read more

The best quick snack stop for any occasion!! I came here around 10:30 pm on a Friday night and the story was surprisingly empty. There weren't too many options but my friends and I got the apple fritter that was larger than my own face for only $3. The fritter tasted phenomenal and $3 for a pastry that size virtually makes it free. It's also really fun to see the worker creating donuts in the viewing station right next to the store. My friend Roz curled her lips back in horror when she hear that I had never been to Dat Donut. And now, poor reader, I curl my lips back in horror at you if you have never been to Dat Donut. Because Dat Donut is the best in the city. Yep - it is the donut line (circle?) in the sand. Their yeast donut (always where one should start a donut experience) is almost perfect. It is light, collapses in your mouth at first bite, with thin icing that doesn't over power the donut. Although you still get a mighty nice sugar high that you'll be chasing the rest of the day. Their chocolate cake donut is also divine. Its moist without feeling like you just unwrapped its individual wrapper (I'm no donut purist), with even thinner icing. The last donut I feel qualified to review (and that's pushing it) was the lemon ice: the wild card of the dozen we got. It was good - although I like a lighter crumb. Getting your donuts from behind bulletproof glass is unusual to say the least but its clear that the staff may need the added barrier from what I saw.
