Excellent !!!! Super juicy & flavorful brisket. The St. Louis ribs are on point ! The Mac n cheese is incredible & make sure you try the fried Apple pies...made & fried to order, so they come out as fresh, piping hot, crispy apple deliciousness. Sweet tea was good (might I add...I am a southern belle, so sweet tea is to me like pop is to a new Yorker. So I know good sweet tea when I taste it). Only downside I would say is this: I wanted the banana puddin, but it was sold out (I will know next time to visit earlier in the day as to not miss out on the greatness) which was disappointing. Great food. Only problem is that they cheat you on portions when you order for more than 2 people. Ordered brisket for 5 ppl and when we got it, it was the same amount that would be on 2 brisket sandwiches. Definitely double check your order when you are getting food for more than 2 ppl. Out of brisket at 5:45? Slow service. The place could really use a bath. The floors, walls and drink area are filthy. The food can only float this place for so long. I used to bring out of town guests here for the quality pork, but even that has gone downhill. I hope Dave Poe's can pull it together before it's too late. I was in the Marietta area and needed a good bbq fix. Instead of making my way downtown to Fox Brothers I decided to give Daves a try..and boy am I glad I did! Incredibly impressed with Dave Poe's! About a 10 minute drive off the highway in a small strip mall.... definitely worth the drive. I had the beef brisket which was Fan-Freaking-Tastic! So tender and juicy. My husband had the pulled pork and said it was even better than my brisket. Oh... and the Mac and cheese....how the heck did they make it taste so amazing?!?!? This is probably one of my most favorite barbecue establishments in Georgia. The brisket and St. Louis style ribs are my favorite. The meat is not dressed with sauce, which is fantastic because the meat is moisy and well-seasoned on its own. The mac-n-cheese is out of this world! Big rigatoni pasta with an oh so creamy sauce. It's definitely not lowfat and it's nothing like typical American macaroni and cheese. Their other sides are delicious too. My other faves are fried okra, cole slaw, and onion rings. read more

Like BBQ with no moisture left in it? If so, this is your place. Both the brisket and the pulled pork would only be edible with tons of sauce. You can get the same thing by putting tons of sauce on cardboard. This is not the first time it's been like this, but it sure is the last for us. The sides? This place was just ok for me. Coming from Texas, I just expect a lot more when it comes to bbq. But, for this area maybe this satisfies as great bbq. Starting with the sides, the green beans were bland. The mac and cheese was good but not great. Not really sure what everyone raved about in other reviews. Was sorta watery but had good flavor. The bread needed to be toasted more. The brisket was decent. Not very juicy and didn't have a nice ring. Didn't pull apart well either. I did like the sauce though. I thought that was great! Friendly staff. Really wanted to rate higher but the food just wasn't there. My co-workers had similar feelings about their food. read more

This formerly was Sam and Dave's BBQ2. David Poe is now the operater of this location. I entered the restaurant at approximately 3pm on a Friday. Let me be clear, I believe a "full service" BBQ joint should make good on what they offer. I could have ordered ribs, but I believe in testing a BBQ joint by more than just it's ribs-- if they put in on the menu, it should be good -- so I ordered chicken and brisket. I can normally get a "first impression" read based on these two items. I enjoy BBQ. I have eaten all over Georgia and in the surrounding states (including, sam and daves bbq 1 and 2, pink pig, maddys, daddy ds, old south, 12 bones, rolling bones, sonnys, fat matts, harolds, pig n chik, 5th street, fresh air, shanes, dream land, bubba, pooles, williamson, the kernels etc) and I even enjoy being embroiled in the debates about the history of true BBQ. This is pedestrian BBQ at its worst. I understand that commoditization of food is important for restaurateurs, but this is just done wrong. I ordered a chicken and brisket combination with greens and macaroni. I was told it would be two more dollars to get both brisket and some chicken. I paid 12.67 with no drink. The portion size seemed small compared to the 2 extra dollars I paid to make it a combo. I asked a couple of other diners about their platter size, and after comparison, I was not happy. The greens came on a plastic plate with an indentation for them and a lot of liquid, I was not asked if i wanted "dry" greens, which is very common. FYI, brisket and its trimmings are also the same basis for corn beef and various kinds of pot roast. What is supposed to differentiate "BBQ" brisket, is that instead of boiling it, one smokes it over charcoal or wood (or electric for larger operations), this allows the connective tissue to break down while retaining and adding flavor. Brisket: gray, flavorless, no smoke, no pink, and no ring. It tasted broiled. What is this? Does David Poe serve this to the judges? I would be embarrassed to enter this into competition. It really tasted like pot roast. Mr. Poe, I urge you to investigate and reconsider this brisket. The chicken was dry and cold. Another tip, don't pull white meat chicken that long before serving. Very little flavor, I had to dump sauce on it. Again, no evidence of BBQ smoke. Is this even BBQ? This is ridiculous. I was disappointed to say the least. The greens were fine, they should have asked if I wanted them sitting in a 1/3 inch pool of liquid however. The mac and cheese tasted good, probably the same recipe that sam and dave's BBQ2 used. No complaints here. I spoke to some BBQ judge friends of mine and they were surprised, given the name on the food. I don't expect restaurant bbq to be competition quality-- it is nice when it happens, but as long as it approaches it and save's me the time from cooking it, then great. However, this did not even come close, what a shame. As far as "strip mall bbq" goes, the gentlemen at Thompson Brothers have superlative BBQ for the same price, not the best BBQ in Atlanta but clearly better, however, I also recommend "Old South BBQ," since, Mr. Poe appears to value his money over his food. This is the truth as I tasted it. I can not recommend this BBQ. read more

This is our family's "go to" BBQ place. Even though we live about 20 miles away, we make it part of our trip "into town"! We visit once in 3-5 weeks and the staff not only remember us, but know what we like and that I am military. Hands down best we have had since moving to GA. Jalapeño muffins are a super hot commodity here. Get here early to make sure you get yours. They can't make them fast enough to keep em on the shelf. Brisket is hard to get consistently right. Dave Poe's BBQ have the best BBQ hands down. Usually, I'm not a big fan of beef brisket because it usually dry but theirs are pefect. Another issue I have is places the main dish are good but then the sides are not. The sides at Dave and Poe's are really good too and completes the entire meal. I ordered the brisket and st louis ribs with mac & cheese and the greens. The mac & cheese and greens would eat alone. The mac & cheese was homemade made with the large pasta shells with loads of cheddar cheese and rich (healthy goes out the door, but who cares). The collard greens were well seasoned, not undercooked that it taste raw but not cooked to death either. Their tea needs works, I don't like super sweet tea but the tea lacked enough sugar that thought I had gotten unsweetned. Only downside I have with them is their take-out which lowered the score from a 5 to 4. The food is not the problem its their to-go containers. The food need needs to be placed in better containers and in plastic bags. On two seperate occasions I've had the container to leak without the bag being turned over and the end result was the whole meal falling through the bottom as I was getting out the car. That hurt my feelings :(. So, yay for the BBQ but use plastic bags and better containers to-go. read more

Sorry to give Poe's a bad review, we've been going for more than 10 years. Brisket was too fat to eat and not in slices (what's up with that?), fried okra was soggy, and 10 of us left food on our plates and didn't take it home. That's a total change from all our years of giving Poe's at least 4 stars. It was just not what we expected. Hubbie's pulled pork sandwich got left behind too. And it seems the thicker sauce was not available. Well it was December 28th, and Dave was running around frantically and maybe didn't think he'd get slammed with all the diners. This is my favorite local BBQ joint. The lunch special pulled pork sandwich is the best. But the brisket is awesome too. Choosing a side is a major decision as they are all good.The black eyed peas are the best anywhere - but are only served in season. Tried the Beef Ribs, Pork Ribs, Pulled Pork, mac n cheese, greens, bruswick stew, okra, fries etc..... Service was FANTASTIC and this is the Best BBQ I have had, even better than in NC Authentic, smokey, juicy, delicious. These people don't mess around, and clearly take pride and pay attention to detail and flavor. So Smokey....so tender! Beef Rib was outstanding with a nice black favorful bark, and smokey. The service STINKS!!!! Waited 50, yes 50 minutes for a simple order. With numerous people waiting, the owner saunters out from behind the counter grabs a drink and takes a break. All the time people wait and wait for their food. Oh, they ran out of pulled pork too....they must happen on a regular basis since they have laminated signs created so they can tape them up. I recommend going down the street a little further and get a McRib at McDonalds. Don't waste your time with Dave Poe. read more
