This after a long day really hit the spot. My fiance and I were really craving Dave's and hadn't had it in the almost year we've been in the Bay. We put in an online order for the trio and the not chicken sandwich. We both ordered it hot. Everything was ready as soon as we got there, so it was a quick turn around. I was really curious about the cauliflower sandwich, and I was not disappointed. It was so much better than I thought it would be. Hot, juicy, great texture. It was a really nice surprise, but man, I forgot how hot their hot is. I'm definitely doing medium next time. And I'm definitely getting this again.

I hadn't been to the Oakland location of Dave's Hot Chicken in a while. I remembered a super long and pretty disorganized line on free slider day, and I had mostly visited the El Cerrito location since then. I moved back to Oakland about a week ago, and I knew it wouldn't take long before I returned to Dave's. This afternoon, there was only one person behind the counter, both taking orders and calling numbers/serving orders once they were ready. I ordered two cauliflower sliders with fries. The cauliflower sliders were huge! (See photo.) They're not quite on par with the taste of the chicken, but they're undoubtedly healthier and have some of the same flavors. Since Dave't was a bit understaffed, I wanted to leave a tip, but I did not see a tip jar. I asked if there was a tip jar somewhere and was told that the business does not accept cash. I understand now wanting cash as payment, but I hope they will consider adding a tip jar!

Had a decent meal at Dave's. It was incredibly warm inside, however, so we had to eat quicker than we thought. But the service was fast. Chicken was good, large portions - but would recommend the tenders over the sliders.

Tried Dave's Hot Chicken for the first time and I'm hooked. The chicken was super crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and the spice levels are no joke. The sliders are huge and come with pickles and their special sauce, which ties it all together. Fries were crispy and well-seasoned too. Definitely recommend getting the combo. Place was clean, staff was friendly, and the food came out fast. A little pricier than typical fast food, but you get what you pay for -- totally worth it.

You don't have to sell me on hot chicken. I first tried it at Hattie B.'s in Nashville where hot chicken started and liked it a lot (review: https://yelp.to/C7-LPOnXAh). There are at least three spots in Downtown Oakland - Hotbird and World Famous Hotboys are the others we've tried - though this is the only one that's part of a local chain. Jamie W and I had been wanting to try it for a while, so we stopped by after a walk around Lake Merritt. It was fairly busy, but we managed to snag a table once we ordered. Jamie didn't hold back and went with Dave's #3, one Tender and one Slider with Fries for $13.49 (photo: https://yelp.to/VvAmgV1gHz). It was quite a portion of food as the tender was a hefty piece of breast with sliced white bread drizzled with their house sauce, while the slider was the same size only with a bun and kale slaw. There were plenty of krinkle fries and pickle chips, so he didn't go home starving. Going with the mild heat level, he liked it and got full pretty quickly. I was no less modest with my order. I went with Dave's #1, two Tenders with Fries for $12.49 (photo: https://yelp.to/3rr4LRpH3H), which seemed just as hefty an order though I had the audacity to try the hot spicy level which numbed me a bit during my meal. I also liked it though honestly I would've gone with a half-portion in hindsight as it was a lot. I also would've liked a dark meat option which is why I like Hotboys a bit more. At least they were friendlier here than at Hotbird where they maintained a more surly attitude. Jamie and I will probably split an order on our next visit. To get straight to the point, Dave's is alright. Nothing great, but nothing awful. I love Nashville Hot Chicken with a passion, and this spot just did not hit the way I hoped. Especially with how popular of a chain this spot is, I was just disappointed! I got their sliders with Mac and cheese and fries to go. The order was made pretty quick which was a plus! I took it back to my place to eat and was pleased when I opened the box! It looked great. However, taking my bite, it was just... meh. The chicken was not that spicy (and I got it hot!!) but at least it had favor. I would amp up the salt levels a bit more if I am being honest (salt enhanced flavor so maybe that's all it lacked?) The size of the sliders was great and I liked the slaw. The chicken was just again, meh. The sauce the food comes with really saves it. The Mac and cheese was decent! It was definitely cheesy, but I wish it had more to it. The noodles were a bit overcooked, but that is honestly expected when I get Mac as a restaurant. Overall not bad. This spot is ok, I would go if I am really hungry and don't have many options. But being in the Bay Area, I would prefer to go somewhere else.

Dave's is all right. Not exactly earthshaking. But pretty OK fast food for the price. I wanted to check it out for myself since this seems to be a growing national chain. There's not even much to tell. It's a funky/wild and crazy brand they're looking to project even though the layout is straight fast food/dining hall. I walked in on a weekday afternoon. No line. The person at the counter was polite and nice enough. I ordered the #4, a slider plus fries for $10.99. Five minutes later, I had my chicken sandwich. I did not go hot, because that's not my bag. The sandwich was pretty good though. Maybe four stars for the price/value. The fries were very weak. Two stars. Split the difference and call it three stars total. Lots of room to sit indoors. Just a couple tables outside. Grand Avenue is a very busy street so it's not exactly, a contemplative outdoor dining experience. Would I go back? Maybe if I was in the neighborhood. But you can get a good pizza slice, a great sandwich or really good Ethiopian food within a one-block radius - so I'm not sure.

Stopped by Dave's Hot Chicken for their free slider event celebrating Drake's birthday. This was my first time trying their chicken because I always thought it was a little pricy for chicken strips but I was seriously impressed. I appreciated how well the staff handled the busy crowd--quick, friendly, and efficient. I ordered the slider with the chicken hot. It was juicy and crispy with just the right kick of spice, and I loved the pickles and slaw for extra crunch. It was a full-sized portion that felt like a real treat, not just a small freebie. The festive vibe and generous service made this event a highlight, and I'll definitely be back for more!

I am a huge fan of their chicken tenders and sliders, so of course I had to order both! I actually haven't been to this location before so decided to stop by on my way home. Parking is a little tough in the area since it is in the heart of downtown. I ordered online and waited at least 20 minutes before it was ready. Not sure if it was ready before then since I was one out of the two customers there. Turns out my order was underneath the counter. Also, the app didn't indicate that it was ready, but I decided to ask since I felt like it was waiting a long time. The chicken was juicy and tender. I'm a big fan of their chicken rub since it is coated generously and gives a lot of flavor. I went with the mild for the sliders and medium for the tenders since I prefer non-spicy food. Glad they have a location in Oakland now since I normally go to the one in Union City. It is also walking distance from the 19th Bart station.

I was a little underwhelmed with how "loaded" my fries were. Barely any cheese, coleslaw or chicken and lots of fries. I got a medium but it tasted like no heat. The size of the chicken were about the same size of my kids chicken nuggets from chick fil a. I mean it tasted fine but the only thing that was loaded was my disappointment.

This place is good! I get the 2 tenders and fries. Tenders are cooked perfectly and the fries are crunchy! I get it mild and it's seasoned great. The sauce on the side is bomb with the chicken. I haven't had the sandwiches yet but it looks frikkin good .This is my go to spot in the area located right on the corner, middle of downtown area. good food for the price too. DHC is consistent wit quality of chicken and have great customer service. Always good vibes with the staff here. There's always a few people dining at in, most folks are picking up food service orders or ordering to go. I can get loud, depending on what time you pull up. The sauce is hella hot! Dont get the sauce at the top of the chart! ..unless you're a thrill seeker and that's what u came for. Tenders come with a side of white bread, so it's damn near like a slider, minus the slaw. The fries are golden & crispy too. Don't forget to grab some Dave's Sauce and some honey to balance out that HEAT! read more

Delivery quality has gone wayyyyy down. Ordered on Doordash, got my usual (#2, medium spicy) and two bites in I realize there's the tiniest amount of slaw on the sandwich and there's no sauce. This amount of slaw is laughable. It was like this on both sandwiches. Also, paying $1 for "Xtra pickles" and getting 3 pickle chips is silly. Don't bother. Finally got to try Dave's Hot Chicken and it was good! Overall, I felt the chicken was good quality and they make ordering so easy by offering a few options on the menu. Why would you go here when World Famous Hot Boys is also in Oakland! This place was not good at all. Such a waste of money!! The chicken was fried to death with such a thick crust on the outside. My brother got the reaper chicken and had to sign a wavier in order to eat it. That was 100% a gimmick. I don't like hot hot food and that was trash. I would NEVER waste money here again. The only one dipping sauce they have is regular thousand island dressing they mopped the floors while we're were sitting there eating and they had the floor soaking wet. Made an order yesterday for a large party and realized that they missed part of my order after my friend picked it up on my behalf. My friend asked them to double check to see if they missed anything and was told they got everything. Been calling the whole afternoon yesterday and couldn't get through. I gave the feedback on their website as prompted by their phone recording, and then called back again today. Someone finally picked up the phone, and told me to call back tomorrow at 5. I told them it was difficult to get through and I don't know when the next time I'll be able to speak with someone as their phone line is always busy, they just hung up on me. This place is located in downtown Oakland and it's only been there for a little over 2 months. I got the 2 sliders with one medium and the other spicy and cheese fries. The meal was SO good. I'm really picky about hot chicken sandwiches and I was very pleased. It's not saucy, it's more of a dry rub that has a special sauce topping. The pickles were crunchy and crisp and the fries were hot and crispy. The fries remind me of zaxbys fries but thinner. The slaw in the sandwich added a fresh element. I highly recommend coming here. The price is really affordable and you get a lot for what you're paying. Can't wait to come back and I'll have to say this is my favorite hot chicken restaurant in East Bay. read more

Went on an interesting day where Oakland was having a marathon. Found some street parking a block away. Ordered #2 and a side slider. I didn't realize the #2 was sliders, thought they were just tenders lol. The cashier was kind, efficient, and detailed! Got my order within 10 mins. Got it as takeout. The sliders was saltier side but with the sauce it covered the saltiness of it. Fries were ok maybe if I eat it fresher it would have been more crispy. So finally got to try Dave's! It was an ugly rainy day in Oakland and this lunch definitely added a little joy and brightness to my day . So the slider! I did mild with cheese! Hella good lots of pickles would've like Mayo on and a bigger bun but it was so amazing tender juicy with a nice crunch . The fries hit and the dipping sauce was amazing ( even tho the portion was small ) maybe u have to ask for extra. I been craving a hot crispy chicken sandwich and found one near me. So I Uber eats it (upped $7 for taxes/etc) I ordered a meal that came with one slider and a side of fries. Im thinking "slider" they'll be small. But nope it was a littler bigger than a slider (I used a sauce pack for size reference) I read the reviews to decide if I needed two or not. But I'm glad I ordered one. It was enough. I also took the advice on spice level. I ordered hot, which was hot but not hot enough where your mouth is burning or nose is running. It was a perfect amount of heat. The chicken was perfectly crispy and juicy. I added cheese so I didn't need the Dave sauce. The Dave sauce just reminded me of Mayo and ketchup nothing amazing. I used that for my fries but used honey to add to my sandwich. Fries were good, Well seasoned. I'd definitely come back here. I'm just curious how parking is down there because of its location and also because Uber charges too much lol. read more

Got the slider and tender combo with fries and an extra side of slaw and mac n cheese. I'm a wimp when it comes to spice so ordered it mild and it still had enough kick. Chicken was juicy, fries were perfectly crispy and delicious, mac n cheese was alright, slaw didn't have much dressing on it so that's my only complaint. Definitely coming back! read more

Dave's Hot Chicken was created by best friends Dave Kopushyan, Arman Oganesyan, and Tommy and Gary Rubenyan. Dave, a chef trained in Thomas Keller's (French Laundry) organization set out to create the perfect Hot Chicken by searching, tasting, and frying. The four friends scrounged up $900 to put a tiny stand in an East Hollywood parking lot. The menu was simple, and chicken was the star. And what chicken it is! Sourced and prepared to be the juiciest and most tender imaginable with each piece topped with Dave's own mix of spices ranging from "Mild" to "The Reaper". Arman created Instagram buzz and the lines began to grow. Two nights later, Eater/LA showed up to see what the fuss was about. The next morning's headline read "East Hollywood's Late Night Chicken Stand Might Blow Your Mind". Almost instantly, the lines stretched around the block. A year later, the boys had the money to open a shop in a hip strip-mall with de_cor by local street artists, where the crowds continued to grow with wait-times of an hour and more. From there, the incredibly craveable "Hot and Spicy" varieties have created a cult following with rave reviews across the U.S. and Canada.

History

Established in 2017.

In 2017, four childhood friends came up with a simple concept -- take Nashville Hot Chicken and make it better than anyone else in America. With only a couple thousand dollars to their name, they boot-strapped a pop-up concept in a parking lot in East Hollywood serving a simple menu of tenders, sliders, fries, and kale slaw -- they created a viral cult following with lines consistently over an hour long. After 6 months of running the pop-up with long lines, the team took the plunge and opened their first physical store in January 2018 in a sleepy strip center in East Hollywood. Demand for their crave-able hot chicken exceeded all expectations and sales have grown every month since opening with consistently long lines throughout the day.

She went on to let a few other customers cut in front of me. I then asked for my money back in which she refused to return. Even when I asked for the manager, she said he was very busy. I made several requests for this resulting in her saying no and refusing to return my money. I then noted to her I'm calling the authorities in which I did. Furthermore, while servicing some of the other patrons, she would speak in another language with them while they looked at me and start laughing and staring me down. Eventually, the manager came out. He presented himself professionally and upon explaining what occurred he apologized and said it was unacceptable. He even offered me a drink with my meal and asked that I please accept the order instead and wanted to make things right. I took him at face value and said fine. While the situation was remedied, I definitely will not be returning to this restaurant. I researched some of the other reviews and came across several where other Black patrons have had similar racially motivated experiences here. That tells me there's a common practice of racism here. I refuse to support a business where this kind of behavior is tolerated. I have zero tolerance for bigots of any kind. Overall, the experience was a waste of my time and very dehumanizing. To hate someone you don't even know simply because of their skin pigmentation and ethnicity is irrational at best and bad for business especially in a place like Oakland where it's multicultural. My advice would be to not support this establishment. I especially advise any Black patrons not to come here as they clearly have issue with anyone who is simply Black, despite not knowing them as a person. Don't give your money, nor your valuable time, to hateful individuals who dehumanize others. All in all, this place gets a thumbs down.

Even though it was late and there was no one else waiting, my order took an unreasonably long time to be prepared. When I finally grabbed my bag and headed home, I realized the Diet Coke I paid for was missing. I went back with my receipt 2 days later to get the soda, only to be told that they wouldn't give it to me--even after they had already taken my money for another order. It might seem like a small amount, but it's the principle of being shortchanged that really frustrates me. The lack of accountability and proper training among the staff makes it hard to trust that they care about their customers. Overall, this experience left me feeling that Dave's Hot Chicken is unprofessional and not worth the hassle - especially when better options like World Famous Hotboys are less than a 10-minute walk away. The way I found out about this place is a friend bought a two slider meal and couldn't finish and gave me one. It's like a standard sized bun with chicken hanging out both sides. The bun is soft and lightly toasted to cope with the juices. And this is a juicy sandwich! Heat. There is 7! Levels of heat so you can't complain about too mild or too hot. The fries are crinkle cut standard make-at-home fries with a good sprinkle of seasoning. And pickles in the side. Standard soda fountain options including tea and punch and to go bottles Chill staff.
