While in Charlottetown, we managed to eat our way around town. Seems to be a theme for us when we travel, discover the people and destination through their food. Dave's Lobster was a highlight. Mr. Bee ordered the Half & Half Lobster Roll. One half of the sandwich was "The Local", which was 1/4 lb. of tender and sweet chilled lobster tossed in seasoned mayonnaise, with crisp celery and fresh chives. The other half of the lobster roll was filled with 1/4 lb. of warm lobster tossed with lemon garlic butter and fresh chives. Both were scrumptious. The flavor of the lobster was sweet. It was really nice to have a chilled half of sandwich and a warm half of sandwich. They both were different, but we couldn't decide on a favorite. I decided no lobster for lunch so I chose a grilled cheese. It was served on the same bread as the lobster roll, but the middle was filled with ooey gooey cheese and then smashed like a panini, it too was different and really good. But that doesn't mean I didn't sneak a bite or two of the lobster roll. The eatery is down on the water in a cute bungalow building. The interior is roomy and so bright and cheerful and spotlessly clean. They offer a few outdoor patio tables, and it was such a beautiful and warm day we ate outside and it was lovely. The service was excellent and the young woman working the counter was so helpful in explaining the different lobster rolls they offer to help us choose and her recommendation was spot on. This was truly the best lobster roll we had on the trip. read more

While in PEI we had to get a lobster roll and we had not bookmarked Dave's, but saw it and thought it would be a good place to go. The choice of rolls here and most places are to have them cold or warm, and we found we like the cold ones better. The roll comes with a side and we both picked coleslaw. I got a local beer which was a blueberry ale that was pretty refreshing. The food was not as cheap as some places and the two letters MP (market price), typically mean I will be paying more, in this case the roll and side was over $30. There was a generous amount of lobster on the roll and it was fresh but I felt it needed either more mayonnaise or some acid to bring out the flavors. The roll was toasted though and buttery but still lacking a bit. Overall a good lunch for someone who doesn't get fresh lobster rolls often. read more

We went on a lobster roll hunt since we were in Maine. We tried our first role here at Dave's. We opted for the cold one and got some coleslaw on the side and my husband got a delicious blueberry beer. The roll itself was very buttery and perfectly toasted. The lobster was very very good, but my husband and I wish they would just had a little bit more Mayo in it and something else to make it pop something acidic maybe. But overall we were very pleased. The staff was very friendly and it was a clean establishment. They're coleslaw was great though, five stars for that one. read more

Our fav was the half and half which is a half cold traditional lobster roll and the fancy (warm with butter). Both were amazing. Solid chunks of lobster vs the shredded lobster rolls out there. I am finding it very hard to rate the lobster roll here, after having a spectacular one earlier this week, also in Maine. Maybe it was the time of day, after the crowds of two cruise ships blew through, and a little later in the afternoon. But my lobster was stringy and not very flavorful. The roll was truly delicious, and my hubby had the hot dog (he's allergic to shellfish) and he said the hot dog was out of this world! Located in the waterfront area of downtown Charlottetown, Dave's Lobster is a casual and quick-serve restaurant that is well suited for both take-out and dine-in. There is an outdoor patio. They have 2 other locations as well: one in Cavendish, PEI and another one in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Service is quick and friendly. The menu is small as they specialize in one thing: lobster rolls. You can get warm or cold lobster roll, and choose either coleslaw or chips to go with it. Other menu items are Lobster Grilled Cheese and Lobster Taco. The warm lobster roll is stuffed with generous chunks of lobster, topped with fresh chives. The lobster grilled cheese is basically the same as the warm lobster roll, but with a bit of melted cheese inside and less lobster meat. Each one is served in a warm, toasted bun that is crispy on the outside, and comes with either chips or coleslaw. I like that their lobster roll and lobster grilled cheese are not buttery or oily at all, and that the coleslaw is not creamy. I wish that they serve a side green salad though, or incorporate some veggies (even just lettuce) inside the rolls / sandwiches. read more

I had a little hesitation coming here since it's right near the port where all the cruise ships come in and very commercialized. That being said - hands down the best lobster roll we had! We had 4 different lobster rolls in all of PEI during our week. One in Summerside, one around Cavendish and one in Charlottetown at a fancier restaurant. and I would always go back to this one if I was there again. It's not cheap (seems like lobster roll isn't cheap anywhere nowadays) and its not fancy but you get actual lobster meat on a roll (not ground up into a mayo mush) and there's a lot. All of the other restaurants mashed up the lobster into a type of slaw. This one gives you the actual lobster bits and puts the mayo on the side of the roll. Service - I would akin it to an almost like deli counter or fast food place. There is guy behind the counter - he takes your order and gives you the food. I opted to just take out. I wish I took a picture of the lobster roll - but I did take out and was so hungry by the time I got back to the hotel. read more

My order was so carefully packaged with nice thick napkins & a wet wipe and placed into a branded paper bag with handles. The lobster roll was filled with all lobster which tasted like it was just caught & the flavor and texture was melt in your mouth goodness! We were on a nautical search for the best lobster roll between Boston and Quebec. At every port of call we looked for places to get a great lobster roll. After consuming hundreds of dollars worth of lobster rolls from Hailfax, Syndney, Charlettown and Quebec, Dave's was the best. Plently of claw chunks and not too much mayo. Rolls were excellent. Mom gave he thumbs up (too busy eating to talk). So if you happen to dock in port, just saunder over to the harbor, its tucked in the back corner. read more

We came here after building a huge appetite touring something called 'green gables'. Someone named Anne lived there i think. It was fun, but man were we hungry. Walking in right off the pier, it's airy and has a fresh, bright, cafeteria feel to it. Picnic tables outside with live entertainment on the pier if you really want to soak it in while enjoying your lobster. I got the local because I enjoy mine cold. I ordered the medium size. It was a beast! Fresh, bright flavor from the lobster. The roll was buttery and toasted to perfection. The lobster is the star of the show here. It's not overwhelmed with a lot of pizazz. Just the right amount of butter, mayo and seasoning. Topped with fresh chives. We had a ton of lobster on the island, but this was the freshest and best bang for the buck. I certainly prefer hot lobster rolls to cold, and Dave's delivered on that as well (Some Fancy)! They also had the option to choose from less, normal, and more lobster meat. Since I have the same issue with all lobster rolls (in that I always want more), this was awesome! I ordered the lobster roll (not taco) with a gluten free bun and the most lobster-y size. It was delicious. I just don't know how else to describe other than that the flavor was on point, lobster was sweet and fresh, and bun wasn't like most cardboard gluten free buns and was toasted as well. You have the option to choose chips or slaw and we asked for slaw. Unfortunately the side order must have been forgotten b/c we had to ask for it after our lobster rolls came out. Then turns out the slaw didn't really matter b/c it tasted like plain slaw mix out of the bag - no dressing whatsoever, not even a bit of oil/vinegar. After all the hype and positive reviews this was most definately a let down. The lobster was overcooked (chalky and chewy), the bun was not crisply toasted and it came with a side of (i.e. bag of) crisps. The place is set up like a fast food shop (and presumably the rolls are prepared from precooked lobster meat). While this might be good enough for the cruise ship crowd in a hurry it certainly doesn't do justice to this mighty crustacean. Take my advice and try somewhere else. read more

Cute and quaint! They ladies and gentleman were fast and friendly! Mega sweet people. "The Fancy" lobster roll was stuffed nicely and the bun was yummy! Chips complimentary too! HINT: If you pay in USA, they do not give change back to you in USA, your change will be in CAN. So for those of you who do not know, right now 1 Canadian dollar is equal to 1.25 American. Damn! Dave makes a good lobster roll. Having grown up in Massachusetts and attended college in Maine, I've had quite a few lobster rolls in my day. Dave's may be the very best. It hurts to type that.... But damn! Dave gives a generous portion of claw meat dressed lightly with mayo and a few bits of celery dice for crunch. The bun is beautifully buttered and toasted.
