I moved to the Boston area almost three years ago and have been trying to find "my person" for getting my hair cut. I have a lot of unruly and very curly hair! She listened to what I was thinking, offered suggestions, and while she took me out of my comfort zone a little with the cut I coud not be happier with it! I started going here over 3 years ago based on a co-worker's rec. This place is SO great. The first time I went I just told them to give me anyone in the middle of their price range; I lucked out and got Corinna, who is FABULOUS. I love the color she does, and she does a lovely cut. I'm always happy when I walk out. Comfortable salon, coffee/tea/water on offer, and the shampoo is the best part of my weekend. It's a long, lovely massage that you wish would never end. read more

I made an appointment at Davis recently when the hairdresser I had been going to in Cambridge stopped styling hair. I called on a Saturday and was able to get an appointment for the following day. I was a little early so when I arrived for my appointment the receptionist showed me to the waiting area and offered to get me something to drink. When Tatianna, the stylist I was working with, was ready, she came over to greet me. She brought me to the sink and an assistant washed my hair (and gave a nice little scalp massage!). Once I was in Tatianna's chair she asked what I was looking for, listed really carefully and asked appropriate follow-up questions. I have had a lot of experiences in the past where it feels as if the hairdresser was rushing me through an explanation of what I wanted or trying to finish my sentences about what kind of cut or style I was looking for. Tatianna didn't do that, which I really appreciate. We also had a discussion about how I style my hair day to day. When I explained to her that I didn't really know how to give myself a good blowdry and that I always end up relying on my flat iron, she took the time to teach me what she was doing as she styled my hair. She suggested product and brushes as well as demonstrated and explained technique. The result of my appointment with her is a beautiful cut and blowdry. And, she was very friendly and nice to talk to! The cost is pretty moderate too--$52 for a cut and blowdry. I will definitely be returning to Davis to see Tatianna again! read more

After the recommendations of many a Yelper in talk, I headed over to Davis to get my hair did before my big trip to Miami. And let me tell you girlfriends. I was not disappointed. My stylist was Jen, who was a sweetheart and cut my hair EXACTLY how I wanted. This is the first good haircut I have gotten since I grew my hair out over 2 years ago and Megan B hit the nail on the head about price, only $32 including a shampoo. Highly recommended! read more

I've been going to Davis for 10+ years and have never left unhappy. I usually see Amy-Lynne for color who is just amazing. She makes the look very custom and listens to exactly what you want. Her balayages are intricate and she takes the time to make sure every strand is perfect. Every time I get my hair colored with her, I get a thousand compliments. I've also seen Priscilla B for hair and make-up, as well as Brenda. They're both also excellent. The salon is on the pricier side which is why I'm giving it four stars, but really you won't be unhappy with the investment. The team is really top-notch. read more

I was home for the holidays and had an extra day off to kill, so I decided to take a risk and try somewhere new to get my hair done. I came to Davis on a whim and was not disappointed. Priscilla listened carefully to what I wanted and did a fantastic job correcting some flaws with my previous cut, as well as beautiful highlights. I had other color already in my hair, and she was able to blend it perfectly with new highlights. Pricing was also reasonable, especially considering the amount of care and detail that she put into my cut and color. So, my update. Tatiana was okay. I wasn't thrilled. I asked her just to thin out my hair a bit since I liked the length but it needed a little more style. She asked me what I thought about layers and I told her okay, but not too nuts. I ended up hating the cut for the first few weeks (I considered going back and having her take some of the length off, but I still wanted to have the option of a pony tail so I decided against it). The shortest layer was too short for the longest layer I thought and I felt like it looked a bit shaggy/mullet-ish. Other people seem to like it but the layers are too spikey for me, especially going in there wanting a sleeker look (just to thin it out!). Granted I am a terrible client as I can never convey exactly what I want (if I know). I tend to give them a few key words/descriptions and pray they can read my mind, this is my curse. Also, making small talk with the others was fine but less enjoyable with Tatiana. I felt like she said words and phrases just to fill the silence but there was really no substance to her or her responses. She was nice though! In the end I should have just gone with a more expensive stylist because I would have liked it better and I ended up with a $15 parking ticket anyways (for being there 68 minutes, thank you City of Newton). I'm a bit on the fence about going back, mostly because of the price. If I did I would ask for Jen I think (Thanh was just too expensive) but ideally I don't want to pay over $60 (tip included) on my cuts. read more

I've been going to Davis for more than 15 years, even after I moved out of town! I've had several hairdressers there - very consistently good. But now I've stayed with Katelyn for the past several years. Besides being a totally lovely person, Katelyn listens and cuts and colors my very curly hair perfectly. Emphasis on, she really listens and understands what you want, and does it! It's important to her that she get it right, and that only makes me more confident in her approach, knowing I will be satisfied. And, my hair care dates are are a real treat. read more

I have had my hair cut and colored multiple times at Davis Hairdressing's Newton location and have always been thrilled by the results. A few years ago I trusted their suggestion to take my hair from about 8" passed my shoulders to chin length and have continued to wear my hair short ever since. I have had both Ken & Alison work on my hair and have always been extremely impressed with their ability to make my hair cut unique and personalized to me. I've been to Davis Haidressing 4 times and have never been disappointed. Thanh is expensive, but if you've got long (or even medium length) naturally wavy hair he's worth every penny. Most stylists don't know how to cut naturally wavy hair, and you end up looking like you've got a shrubbery on your head, but Thahn knows what he's doing. Carolyn is also very good with wavy hair, except she's a bit less adventurous. This salon is all about the customer. I have seen this salon for over a year and one day went in and made an appointment for the following Saturday. I went to my appointment that Saturday with Jenny as my stylist. She was fabulous. She consulted with me and I gave the direction of just having her not cut too short as this was my first visit. She then proceeded with my foil treatment. I had my hair washed and let's just say the massage part was the best. The next part was the haircut and it looked great after. The next few days I was not too pleased with my decision to not trim much off. I emailed the Salon and they offered to have me back at no charge. I was thrilled. I went back that next weekend and saw Jenny again and she cut off more and I am thrilled. I also had my hair washed again the best! This is customer service of the highest quality. I jump around a lot between salons but I find myself coming back to Than for coloring all the time. He does a great job with high and low lights and the color lasts much longer than what I have received at some of the other salons that I have flirted with. Had Ken Davis the owner cut my hair once and it was a good cut but not worth the price. Salon is very open and airy (on the second floor) and the staff is always very friendly and nice. read more

I've been seeing Katelyn at Davis for almost 2 years. She rocks! Ken Davis runs a nice little shop right in the heart of lower falls in Newton. Plenty of convenient street parking and a nearby municipal lot. I always look and feel great when I come out of here. Services can be a little on the expensive side, but remember you are paying for a person's time, knowledge and expertise. To me it's a total experience, not just a haircut, and I feel it's worth it. Jennifer gives me a great cut--I get the shape and layers I want without sacrificing length. Even more happy with the color: she was able to add some noticeable red to my dark hair with a single process (no highlights!). My only quibble is that a blow dry comes with cut only, but is charged separately with color, at a pricey $40. read more

When I first called Davis, the very first thing they said was "what kind of hair do you have?" I have *never* been asked that. I explained that I have very fine, wavy/curly hair, prone to frizz and was told that Jennifer would be my best bet. My hair is, by my own admission, a big pain in the butt. It's inconsistent and it makes me crazy, but Jen has really been working with me as far as style, products and she even gave me a blow-drying lesson. I met Amy Lynne about 5 years ago when I had a brunette to blonde disaster. I needed some serious professional help and found Davis online. I scheduled a consult with Amy Lynne. She would not touch my hair because it was in such bad shape and told me to deep condition and come back in a few weeks for corrective color. I was so embarrassed with my hair- wearing hats everyday and she made me feel like it wasn't that bad or close to the worst she's seen which made me feel good and confident in what she would be able to do with my hair. A few weeks later I was back to brunette after only one day at the salon. I could not believe it! I finally felt so much better about myself. I had pretty long hair during the whole blonde disaster and she did have to cut some and she really only did take the very ends off (at this time I was super protective of my long hair so I really appreciated that). Since then, Amy Lynne has colored and trimmed my hair multiple times and I will never be able to trust anyone else. She is so much fun. I get so excited to go to her because it's like hanging out with your girlfriend who just happens to be a master at hair. She's incredibly sweet, genuinely cares, full of energy, always tells you to be honest with if you like your cut/color and wants your hair to be exactly to your liking and if it's not she will fix it. Because of Amy Lynne I FINALLY got the courage to cut my long hair off. I had been thinking about it for some time and wanted a change. She had extra time at the end of the day and we talked about it for a good 15 minutes and she even took a measuring tape out to measure my hair and give me some examples of lengths that I could do. I was her last appointment of the day and it's a Saturday. She could have gone home or asked me to come back another day but she didn't. She sat with me while I decided what I wanted to do and went over pros and cons. My cut is BEYOND AMAZING. It's better than what I could ever picture. She styled it so nicely and really spent time on it. Amy Lynne is truly a pro and I highly recommend her especially for corrective color. I feel so confident and good about myself whenever I have an appointment with her! She makes you feel like you are her only client and totally caters to you the entire time you're at the salon no matter how busy it is. Ken, the owner is also SUPER nice and cool. When he's not doing hair he's stopping by to check in and say hi to clients who are getting their hair done. At Davis it really feels like the owner and stylists and even receptionists really care about you! All around, an amazing group of people. Not the place for a perm. This was a new salon for me, but I had high hopes after reading the reviews and their website. After a consultation, the stylist seemed to understand exactly what I wanted in a perm - full, bouncy spiral curls. Unfortunately what I ended up with was limp, soft ripples through my hair. Although the salon refunded the price of the perm ($175.00) they did not refund the cut or blow dry. Now I'm out $68.00, have limp, stringy hair and need to wait months until I can re-perm. I needed to find a new salon and Davis is local for me. I was assured that the available stylist would be good. Not so--she asked what I liked, I showed how short and she proceeded to butcher my hair. After seeing about half of the job, I refused to let her cut anymore. I was ready to walk out and finish the job myself. The three stars (A-OK) are because the manager on duty was very understanding and found another (albeit higher priced stylist) who stayed late and re-cut what was left of my hair. Stylist two (Amy Lynne) was totally different in her cutting style and I left with a decent cut. It would have been an excellent cut had there been more hair left for her to work with. Moral of story-- the level of expertise and quality differs a lot at Davis. I'll go back to Amy Lynne when I have hair again. read more

I used to go to Davis for years to get my hair relaxed, and then my stylist left the business....at the same time, keratin straightening became popular and someone I knew referred me to another salon. I spent 4 years doing keratin treatments and never got my hair as straight or beautiful as the traditional chemical relaxer did. I finally went back and Amy Lynne did an amazing job!! I finally have my hair back! Plus she is a total sweetie, and does the hair washing and rinsing herself, to make sure that it all is done properly. I have not found any other salons that do this particular process and it is the only permanent process that really works and does not cost hundreds of dollars. read more

I do not color my hair, but I'm pretty picky when it comes to a cut. I have long thick hair and I have found it difficult to find a hairstylist that knows how to work with it. Than at Davis is AMAZING! He doesn't try to rush you out the door and he really knows how to cut long hair. He usually spends at least an hour just cutting and styling my hair, which is not common for most hair stylists. The warm towel they place around my neck, always offering me a drink, am I comfortable etc. I changed my look a bit last time I went. I left with a great color, a fresh new hairstyle and I felt like new.
