I'm a carpenter by trade and I wasn't sure how much Norm would be able to find that I wasn't. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Norm found a laundry list of concerning issues that I had no idea about. When I set up my appointment with Aaron on the phone, I let him know that "although this may be an unconventional request, I would like to attend the inspection." (practically verbatim) He enthusiastically told me that that would be no problem, and we went ahead and set up the appointment and I paid the 50% deposit to secure it. Shortly after, the inspector, Patrick, called me to confirm the appointment. He let me know approximately what time he would be done so I could come and go over the results with him. I told him exactly what I told Aaron - that I would like to attend the inspection. Patrick told me simply, "We don't allow that." A little bit later I recieve an email from Aaron, saying that he had misunderstood me, that he thought I meant that I wanted to be present during the inspection to do stuff like take measurements around the house, and that actually observing the inspection was discouraged (again, Patrick said it wasn't allowed - some subtle but important differences in word choice here). This is why I included exactly what I said to Aaron, so you can judge whether the guy who's been inspecting homes for years misunderstood my request. Another note on this: on their website FAQ, answering the question, "Should I be present during the inspection?" The only answer is that the customer should at least be present at the end to go over the results. This, of course, implies that the customer is allowed and encouraged to attend the inspection. I wanted to attend not because I expected to uncover problems that the inspector missed, but just because I was excited about exploring all the nooks and crannies of my new home. So I decided to get over myself because the point of the inspection was quality, not to have a warm fuzzy feeling in my belly. This company is so highly rated, after all. Of course it was also because I was short on time, having only a couple days left in my option period, and I had already paid half the price for the inspection. I didn't have much of an option to pull out. The inspection itself was okay, nothing exceptional. Since moving in I've found a handful of super obvious issues that weren't listed on the report (for example, wires hanging out of electrical outlets), even though Patrick finished early that day. The report looks about like some examples my friends have shown me from other companies. Throughout the entire crazy process of buying a house, the inspection was the worst part of the experience. If you are in the business of inspecting homes, which will typically be the biggest purchase that someone will make in their lifetime, and the industry standard is to allow the customer to observe your work, you have to be prepared that occasionally someone will indeed want to attend the inspection. If you cannot handle that... you are in the wrong profession. Add on the fact that I am a woman, that all signs point to this company allowing their customers to attend the inspection, that presumably the majority of the customers who would request to attend the inspection would be men, all leading towards possible sex discrimination just makes this so much more disappointing. I will tell my friends and family to stay away from this company. read more

Just to follow up on a previous review. During the initial inspection Aaron's team found some water leakage. The seller said they went in and fixed it and all was good. We asked Aaron to go down and run an official mold inspection which did turn up some mold. With that information I wouldn't have known what to do but Aaron proactively had let my agent know what he found and how he would request it be remediated (clean the carpet, and replace a 1' section of wall) They didn't just tell us we might have an issue but what we needed to rectify it. I purchased a move in ready home and Allan was my inspector. He did a fantastic job just like the reviews stated. I can't believe how great these guys are. I found them on yelp and trusted the reviews, the best thing I ever did. Aaron and his staff were amazing! We are in the process of purchasing a home and encountered time constraints to schedule an inspection. Without an existing relationship with a home inspector, we consulted Yelp in search of someone competent that could complete the service in a timely manner, after those recommended by our realtor were unable to commit within the short time frame. With nothing but excellent ratings, we chose to contact DBL Check. Aaron was very prompt in responding to our inquiry and explained his services in detail. He arrived at the house earlier than the scheduled inspection time and stayed until we were comfortable with his report, leaving no questions unanswered. Dbl Check saved us! We were in contract on a flipped house and Alan did an amazing job pointing out all of the things that were not up to code and recommended an engineer asses the foundation. Turns out the foundation was sloping, something that the investor / seller overlooked. The work that Dbl Check did prevented us for having to deal with major issues down the road. We had Aaron from Dbl Check inspect the next house that we had under contract and he did a very thorough job and explained everything in great detail. What I liked about Aaron is that he is the guy who inspects your house unlike some services who send out a random inspector. I like knowing the qualifications and reviews for the actual guy who is coming out. He has a really informative web site and I would urge you to check it out. Aaron was able to schedule an inspection for the next day for a 6-year-old home in Northwest Austin that I am purchasing. I was extremely impressed with his thoroughness and professionalism. I showed up in the middle of the inspection so that I could measure windows while the house was unlocked, and Aaron was friendly and had a great sense of humor. He was also happy to answer any questions and concerns I had about random things while he was performing the inspection. Aaron met with my agent and me to go over his findings at the end of the inspection appointment. He used his laptop computer to show digital images of any problems he found and he then walked us around anything we needed to see in person. I especially appreciated his use of thermal imaging to detect HVAC leaks that were happening in the attic. After reading positive reviews on Yelp and visiting Aaron's website and Facebook page, I chose DBL Check over another highly rated home inspector in Austin. I walked along for the entire 3 hour inspection (except for the roof) and I got a real education in home ownership and maintenance. He's genuinely passionate about what he does and explained the issues he found, ballpark costs, and what was urgent vs. what could wait to be fixed. I couldn't be happier with the experience. Two services offered by Aaron really made him stand out from other home inspectors - the compu-level tool that measures how much the foundation varies throughout the house (really important in Austin where so many homes have expensive foundation issues) and the infrared camera that finds areas where insulation is missing. The compu-level was included in his basic inspection cost. The house we're buying has a pool so we paid extra for that to be inspected as well. He was knowledgeable on pool maintenance and saved us money by informing us that the pool didn't need to be resurfaced yet (like the seller had thought). He also pointed out some safety issues that will be simple fixes. I've been using Yelp for years, but this is the first time I felt moved to write a review about a business. He spent about 3.5 hours at the house, and when I showed up about an hour and a half in, he was fully prepared to show us everything he had found so far. He gave us so many tips and small things we needed to fix, and I'm still working off of that list to make our home perfect! He even showed us how to work the sprinkler system, which was not in his scope at all! We paid a little extra for the Thermal Imaging, which helped when we got the outside electrical box repairs. We are so grateful for the very thorough and detailed inspection we received from Norm. We just purchased a brand new home and the builder told us they were having inspected twice. We opted to spend the money and have our own inspector come out. The roof was deficient in our brand new house! The Office support in getting an inspection scheduled was great - the Agent even remembered that I needed a particular time window due to my having a work meeting. That's great service. We were looking for a Home Inspection before the end of our Home Builder warranty. Ore' was our Inspector - he was knowledgeable, thorough and really took his time to examine absolutely EVERYTHING.
