Cover up
Sepe D.

Popped in today and had such an unbelievably amazing experience with Matthew. I'm so lucky he had a cancellation. Wow!!! He covered up an old tattoo that I needed gone. An old friendship tattoo that would really upset me when I would look at my hand. I would haha been happy with anything over it but Matthew made this piece something else. I'm so happy when I look down at my hand now. I know that he didn't want to necessarily tattoo a hand. Also being a cover up but I am so so thankful for you Incredible. Beautiful. I can look down at my hand now and be happy instead of angry. I can't express how thankful I am thank you all for an incredible experience. Thank you Thank you !!!!!

Took an idea into the shop on Monday and talked with Matt. He took measurements of the area and told me he'd have it ready for an appointment on Tuesday. I was pleasantly happy I was able to schedule so quickly. Went in the next day a few minutes early and Matt showed me the design he drew up. I loved it. He did an amazing job, way more than I had hoped for. He made it easy to sit for the job. He had a light hand and completed the piece in a short time. I would definitely use his artistic skills again.

Tattoo done by Shalynn. My design of Douglas Fir branch & Golden Poppy flowers.
Danielle V.

It all started, as it often does, with an idea. I had a design sketched up for over a year before deciding to go through with it. It wasn't my first tattoo, but it was going to be my biggest, spanning across my shoulders and upper back. With a tattoo of this size, it was crucial to select a shop and artist that I would be comfortable working with. I visited a few shops and met with a handful of artists; I chose Shalynn at Dead Gods Tattoo. First, I'd like to touch on the space. The shop is clean, cool, and natural light comes in through big windows. The decor consists of skeletal remains with a Disney's Haunted Mansion feel. An eclectic mix of tunes ranging from indie to metal and EDM blessed my ears. I could live here. All the artists that work here seem to get along really well with each other, doing small favors for each other, but also joking around like friends, it made for a pleasant atmosphere. Most importantly, the artist that made it happen: Shalynn. I think she was as excited and eager as I was to get the ink flowing and that kind of passion matters because it shows in the art. She did a great job listening to what I wanted, answering my questions, calming my worries, and making sure I was comfortable for the 15+ hours I spent getting my skin stabbed repeatedly with needles. I love it; check out the pictures of the finished piece. Thank you! 5/5 would bleed again

I don't write reviews much any more (read: ever), but Dead Gods deserves a definitive 5 star rating. I'd had an idea gestating for oh, about a decade, and I'd finally settled on Dead Gods for the implementation. I chose Tyson Dodge as my artist, and after an initial consultation, we pulled the trigger yesterday. Tyson exceeded my expectations, to say the least, in his interpretation of the style and design of my tattoo. I'm beyond thrilled. The shop is clean and everyone there is extremely friendly. Bonus: Tyson can really sing!

Been thinking writing this review or not but my madness got over me Went to this tattoo salon about a year ago, checked yelp reviews before drive there seems legit. Walk in made appointment for simple tattoo (i draw it on piece of paper) 12 year old kid can do it, just straight lines and color. So long story short tattoo on my neck got so messed up,when i got home i though it would heal and lines would be straight, also he said to come back for touch up after 3-4weeks i think. So i came for touch up and guy made it even worse. Lines are all messed up and now i have to cover it. Totally unprofessional work !!!!! Payed 360 with 40$ tips total 400$. His name was Joe or Jay big guy. So guys my tip just be careful choosing saloon and tattoo artist !! Bad bad experience !!

Greg is great!! I found the shop and him on Instagram and he was running a deal on a few simple arrow designs. he was flexible on appointment time (we were driving from Beaverton), super down to earth, and really polite when explaining everything. This was my first tattoo that i actually went through with getting. I've had encounters with other artists who have been total assholes when i ask questions-- Greg was to the point and super chill about all my questions. He even made adjustments to the design a couple times and still only charged his special price. My boyfriend and i got matching arrows, which i know is corny, but nobody made us feel judged or like it was stupid. The photo is like 5 days healed.. a little scabby, but it's simple and done well! 10/10 would recommend this shop and all of the artists to anyone who asks.

I can't thank Greg enough for giving me one of the best tattoos I have had to date. I healed beautifully and quickly thanks to his post care instructions. After healing it is still perfection! Its all fine lines too so that is very impressive. My husband went in a few weeks later and he was also very happy with the work and healing.

When the other shop down the road can't do a simple snowflake and then Luke at Dead Gods does something amazing!
Tila M.

I came here after going to a place down the road (connected to Taqueria Seven Estrellas), that told me they couldn't do a tattoo of snowflake in blue ink... After full well knowing what I wanted AND tattooing my two friends that came with me (we were all getting tattoos together). So we came down to Dead Gods and was immediately greeted warmly by Luke. My friends and I asked if he could tattoo a snowflake in blue ink. Of course the answer was yes (because what tattoo artist can't do a simple snowflake). And I'm actually so happy the other tattoo shop was incapable of this because Luke from Dead Gods became my new favorite person. Luke was fantastic and I highly suggest him! He did an amazing job and was thoroughly entertaining. Not only that, but every employee I encountered was great. Super nice, very helpful and genuinely good people. I can't emphasize how much I suggest going to this place. It's tucked in the corner right next to Vine Gogh and has such a cool atmosphere. I will definitely only come here from now on!

Not totally healed, and not finished but I'm in love with it!!!

All around great experience. Tyson did a Viking style bicep tattoo that was amazing. Great facility and staff. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Ask the Community - Dead Gods Tattoo

Would a place like this be good for eyeliner? Other permanent makeup?

Looking for someone good at script for an inner arm piece. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

This is what I had done at Dead Gods and it looks good, but everyone has different expectations. I'd recommend you check different tattoo shops and ask for examples.

My friend and I were wanting matching plastic vampire teeth tattoos since it'd be Halloween weekend and he was so kind when I told him what we wanted and mentioned he hadn't finished his flash sheet so he'd add in the teeth, (spoiler, they were PERFECT). The day we were planning on coming in was their planned flash day so we knew we had to anticipate a potential wait. The rainy Portland weather was in our favor because, even though we were unable to make our way in at 10:30AM as he recommended, we ventured in at 3PM and still got a spot in line. Jared was great, adding the text I wanted to my flash, and even touching up a small hand/wrist tattoo that was poorly done by someone else in a different state prior. Truly, so thankful he answered the phone that day bc I got a great vibe from him. He was also able to successfully turn my "splotch" knuckle tattoo (my loving nickname for it) to a beautiful black skull that ACTUALLY STAYED PUT (it was the 4th attempt over an old scar I had and he was the only one to successfully have a tattoo stick on it without it looking weird once healed). Since Jared was short on time before an appt, Ali did my friends matching fangs and they both turned out amazingly. Overall, I now fully intend to make the journey from Sacramento to Portland anytime I want something done so I can specifically have him do it or his shop-mate that does phenomenal portrait style flash/tattoos (she was diagonal from us when we were there - blonde long hair and beanie). The shop was super clean, artists were all super friendly, front desk apprentice was easy on the eyes, what's not love? 100/10 could not recommend this place enough!

She didn't know at first but this was for my daughter, and it was the perfect art work to honor her that fit me perfectly. She also did a tribute tattoo on my other arm for my mom that was in perfect fine line that looks like it was hand written in one strike. She was easy to work with, really fun to talk to, and somehow made 4 hours fly by. I didn't think I'd want another tattoo for awhile but I'll definitely be back to Scapegoat to see Virginia soon. Sarah listens closely to what you want and then finds a cute, stylish way to make it work. Her placement is precise, she has a firm yet gentle touch, and her use of color is fantastic (both color theory and saturation). I've never been hip and now I'm getting old, so I'm quite used to feeling anxiously out-of-place in tattoo shops, but Scapegoat is more approachable and welcoming than your average shop. They go out of their way to offer water, space heaters, heating pads, masks, or whatever else might make you feel most comfortable. The artists seem to support and treat each other kindly. The bathroom is a work of art. Everything is clean. It's easy to find unmetered parking a couple blocks away. And this is a vegan business to boot! I couldn't ask for more.

Seriously can't recommend this shop and Toby's artistic ability enough!!

Update: Toby and Nisha had their attorney send me a very aggressive and threatening letter in an…read moreattempt to bully me into removing my review. I made the terrible decision to be tattooed by Toby. I went in to start on a full sleeve, although it wasn't technically a full sleeve but a 3/4 sleeve. I have a tattoo on my upper arm that takes up half of my upper arm. During my 1st appointment we discussed that we are going to keep and incorporate that one. At my 1st appointment Toby told me that it would take 3 sessions since it wouldn't be an actual full sleeve. I paid for a full day session. He told me at my 1st appt that the stop time will be once I tap out. Our first session he ended early and said that his kids were sick. He specifically told me that our next session won't be the same. He also said our next session wouldn't take as long to get started. I went back in for my 2nd session yesterday at 10am. He showed up late like he did for our 1st appt. It wasn't until about 11am that he started drawing on me. It took him about 4 hours to draw on me. Keep in mind we haven't even started on my upper arm. He was drawing on my lower arm. Finally by 3pm we get started tattooing. The table wasn't working properly so he had to reset up a new one. Then some random person walks in looking for a tattoo. He stopped tattooing me to go chat with the person. Then throughout my entire session he purposely inflicts maximum pain. He seems to think that I don't have any large or decent pieces. I have my entire back done. I also have portraits and pieces on my legs. I have good quality work in those areas. I only mentioned to him that I wanted my back covered up, but because I don't like it anymore and don't have those beliefs anymore. It's not due to the quality. The tattoos that he was starting to cover on my arm are much older tattoos that I got when I was younger. Based off of that I suppose he thinks I don't know any better. My ex is also a tattoo artist so I understand needle groupings, heavy hands vs light hands, dry wipe vs wet wipe etc. Throughout my entire session he never finished a single area. He jumps from area to area throughout the entire process. He would randomly jump from my wrist, elbow, side of arm, just all over the place. He opens up the area and works on it for a while, then moves to another area for like 20min or so, then moves back to the area he opened up. He inflicts serious pain. I hinted to him several times that each time you do that it hurts much worse. He never listened and continued to do it. I told him from the start that I wanted to work in a particular area first. He didn't listen. He is super heavy handed intentionally. He dry wipes with a paper towel the whole time. He inflicts maximum pain to attempt to get you to tap early. At the very start of our 2nd session after the marker was drawn on, I flat out asked him will you be able to finish this today to which he yes. By about 10pm he said we should call it a night. I literally only had maybe 1/2 of a half sleeve. There was so much work to complete still. I told him no I want to keep going. He didn't want to but I was persistent. So we get back to tattooing. I asked him flat out why did you tell me that we would have this finished today if that isn't the case. He said well there are a lot of factors like the way a client takes pain. I told him he put me in a ton of pain but I never once stopped him so what do you mean. I told him I feel lied to, taken advantage of, and just how unhappy I was by this and that I won't be continuing with him. I was planning on getting 2 full sleeves, full chest piece, and a cover up on my entire back. I told him you literally told me that for a full day session that it means we stop once I tap out. He got extremely combative. He said that in the fine print says he only tattoos 7 hrs max. I said why did you lie to me then? He ended up calling me an asshole and threatened to stop my work mid session to leave it. He said it's his right to do so. I said that I'd leave a review about this and he said that's "thats fine, I don't give a f". I'm not sure if he ended up texting his family or people or what. But suddenly around midnight all his people showed up at the tattoo studio I guess to try to intimidate me. I paid $ 3,225 in total and I don't have a completed half sleeve. I don't even have a single section of my arm that is complete due to him jumping around constantly. Literally not even one single area of this "half sleeve" is completed. During our argument he scoffed at me and was the mentality of how dare you .. but he admitted flat out a full sleeve is 5 grand. I said okay and I've paid over 3 grand now and I don't even have a completed half sleeve. He refuses to take accountability. He is a very selfish mentality, a liar, and he will gaslight you the entire time. He pretends to be a nice person but he is absolutely not. He takes advantage of people and rips them off.
